Third hottest July on record It felt like a scorcher because it was a scorcher, according to Environment Canada statistics for Cranbrook and Kimberley SALLY MACDONALD Cranbrook Daily Townsman
Whether you spent the month of July cursing the sun or rejoicing in the natural sauna out your front door, it was clear that the summer had turned into a hot one. Just how hot, we know now, as Environment Canada meteorologist Andre Besson reports that the weather station at Canadian Rockies International Airport recorded July 2014 as the third hottest July on record. The daily average temperature for the month was 22 degrees Celsius. See HOT, page 4

Long-time Mayor honoured Jim Ogilvie Way officially named at ceremony C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
A nice-sized crowd of well-wishers attended at brief ceremony on Friday morning to see 312 Street between Maryville and Kimberley officially renamed Jim Ogilvie Way. “It’s great to see such a wonderful turnout and it’s my privilege as mayor to hon-
our Jim Ogilvie,” said Mayor Ron McRae. McRae spoke briefly on Mayor Jim’s significance to Kimberley and then turned the mike over to the man himself. “I am really pleased to be here and see so many folks show up,” Ogilvie said. “It’s ironic that when I first started on Council in 1965, one of my first jobs was working on paving the Marysville Highway.” Ogilvie recounted being elected and then told by the council of the day that voters would never approve the spending of money to pave the road.
“People won’t stand for it, they said. I packed a petition around town myself and got all the residents to sign it and agree to pay extra to pave the road. “Ever since that day I’ve been wrestling with pavement. Now it’s Ron’s job.” Ogilvie said that through the years Kimberley Council did a lot of things that other towns didn’t have to do. It wasn’t thinking out of the box, he said, so much as taking advantage of opportunities to do things that needed to be done. See OGILVIE, page 4
Register to vote
You can still sign up to vote at polling place but everything runs more smoothly if you are already on the provincial voters list C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley residents will be heading to the polls this Saturday, November 15, 2014 to elect Mayor and Council. And in order to ensure that things run smoothly, the City of Kimberley is asking that those who are not on the provincial voters
list to register now. Kimberley will be using the provincial voters list prepared by Elections BC. It will be provided to the City by the end of August, so if you are not registered, or if your personal information has changed (such as an address) you only have a few days to inform Elections BC.
