Compassion and generosity have helped ease some of the pain of a rural Lumby tragedy. The body of Gregg Fisher, 69, was recovered from the Shuswap River, near the dam on Mabel Lake Road, July 31. His truck had left the road June 14. “The waiting was so frustrating,” said sisterin-law Sylvia Fisher, from Surrey. Gregg Fisher Recovery was on hold until the water level came down on the fastmoving river. “They (searchers) tried every week, sometimes twice a week but there was a concern if they put a diver down with the current. We didn’t want any more tragedies happening,” said Sylvia. The recovery effort included the RCMP, Vernon Search and Rescue, the Lumby Fire Department, B.C. Hydro, a crane operator
and a tow truck driver. “Our family can’t praise everyone enough,” said Sylvia. “Everyone just came together.” Richard Fisher, Gregg’s brother, was impressed with the RCMP and specifically Cpl. Henry Proce, Const. Dan Cocks and Const. Rob Morozoff. “They phoned us and kept us up to date on the process,” said Richard. Also reaching out to the family have been Gregg Fisher’s neighbours and residents of Lumby, where he was known for his artwork. “We were touched with the warmth of total strangers,” said Sylvia. Helping keep them informed about river conditions was Larry MacGregor, who met Gregg in 1966 and lived next door. “He was like a brother to Gregg,” said Richard. “Everyone has been so nice to us.” The family is also pushing to have the Ministry of Transportation install a barrier to prevent vehicles from leaving the road and going into the river. “We don’t want this to happen again,” said Sylvia.

It was a slow long weekend for excessive speed in the North Okanagan. And Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP traffic officers are just fine with that. Coming off a previous weekend where officers impounded six vehicles on Highway 97 north and south of Vernon because they were between 48 and 83 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit, officers on the long weekend didn’t come close to matching those totals. “They are happy to report that they only had to issue one excessive speeding impound this weekend,” said Gord Molendyk, spokesperson for the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP. Officers, however, were kept busy as they issued 42 speeding tickets on the long weekend. They also handed out one 12-hour sus-

Statistics for the past week in the VernonNorth Okanagan detachment area show there was one 12-hour prohibition for alcohol; one 24-hour prohibition for drugs; three, threeday Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPS) were issued along with five 90-day IRPs; there were no impaired driving arrests and seven vehicles were impounded.
