New community forest still hasn’t been issued

Financial statement The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) ended the financial year of 2013 in the red, with a deficit of nearly $540,000, according to the audited financial statement that was made public by the regional district earlier this month.

Issuing the licence for the Chinook Community Forest has been a slow process

Legal support Back in June, the federal government gave approval to Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline, subjected to the approximately 200 plus conditions set forth by the Joint Review Panel, and the five conditions set forth by the B.C. Provincial Government.

STEVEN MAISEY When stakeholders at Hampton Affiliates were deciding whether or not to move forward with the rebuilding of the Babine Forest Products sawmill after the explosion and fire in Jan. 2012 destroyed the mill, one of the main concerns was the amount of timber available to supply the mill. The stakeholders stated that to justify a rebuild enough timber in the Lakes Timber Supply area (TSA) needed to be available in order to supply the new mill. The need for enough timber to supply the mill led to officials in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, the Village of Burns Lake and most importantly the six First Nations groups in Burns Lake, which include the Burns Lake Band, Lake Babine Nation,the Cheslatta Carrier Nation, the Wet’suwet’en the Skin Tyee Nation and the Nee Tahi Buhn Indian Band to propose to the provincial government that a second community forest be added to the Lakes TSA and to the Burns Lake community. Returning from China Two Lakes District Secondary School (LDSS) students have returned from their 10 day trip to Beijing, China, as part of an educational summer camp hosted by the Beijing International Education Exchange.

UNUSUAL HORNET’S HIVE

Southside Tena Weibe captured this photo of a very unusual hornet’s hive on her house. Hornet nests are made of a paper substance derived from saliva and wood pulp. The size of a hornet nest grows in proportion to the size of the colony. Nests may grow to be as large as basketballs. Nests are only used once; worker populations perish in winter, leaving only the fertilized females to begin new colonies in the coming warm seasons.
