Traffic was closed for nine hours along Highway 1 in eastern Langley on Wednesday (July 30), following a fatal single-vehicle crash involving a tandem gravel truck. The crash occurred at about 9 a.m. just east of the 264 Street off-ramp, very close to the Abbotsford-Langley border. Westbound traffic between 264 Street and Mount Lehman Road was closed until just after 6 p.m. to allow for both emergency response and a police investigation. “We’re still not sure exactly what the cause of the accident is. It looks towards mechanical, but we won’t know for several hours yet if we can confirm that it was a mechanical failure,” said RCMP Cpl. Robert McDonald at the scene of the crash on Wednesday. Some Facebook posts from family and friends

of the driver identified him as “Malhi” and said he was 24 years old. They stated that the crash resulted when one of the truck’s tires blew, causing the vehicle to flip. While investigators were on the scene, traffic was diverted at the Mt. Lehman Road exit, until the freeway re-opened at about 6 p.m. The highway closure snarled traffic in the region for the entire day. Westbound traffic was diverted onto Fraser Highway and further north along Mount Lehman Road, and then west via 56 Avenue. The Aldergrove and Gloucester areas were choked with traffic. There was stop-and-go traffic along the Fraser Highway heading westbound until approximately 6:30 p.m. Remnants of the truck remained at the scene of the crash Thursday night.

Township, health authority review boil water warning D AN F ERGUSO N Ti me s Re po r te r

The Township of Langley and Fraser Health Authority are reviewing the way boil water warnings are issued after several Aldergrove residents complained about the way the municipality and medical agency handled a contamination alert in July. The advisory was issued Friday, July 4 for the municipal water supply east of 260 Street and west of 276 Street and north of 24 Avenue and south of 36 Avenue. It said people should boil their drink-

ing water for at least one minute before drinking because a “low level of coliform bacteria was detected.” The notice was posted on the Township website and various online social media. As well, a press release was distributed to newspapers, television and radio and street signs went up. The notice was lifted on Monday, July 7. There were no reports of any illness. Some residents complained they didn’t find out about the notification until several hours after it was issued. Annette Matthews said her husband

She said her husband, who has a compromised immune system because he is undergoing chemotherapy, had consumed about 32 ounces of municipal tap water that afternoon and evening, because he was under doctor’s orders to drink plenty of fluids. gested using door-to-door leaflets or an automated telephone call system in the future. “I believe there is room for improvement in the notification process,” Matthews added. Other residents had the same opinion. In a comment posted on The Times website, Clovis Amado said if a friend hadn’t phoned, the notice never would been discovered. “If this is so serious, why [aren’t] they Continued Page 4
