The same two councillors, Maja Tait and Herb Haldane, voted in opposition to the District of Sooke’s 2014-2018 Five Year Financial Plan at the regular council meeting on April 28. And the same two councillors, Bev Berger and Kerrie reay, stepped out of the council chambers citing a conflict of interest.

Questions arose regarding the use of Development Cost Charges (DCC) because of a shortfall in the district’s revenues and the escalating costs in the engineering department.

As head of the Finance and Administration Committee Councillor Rick Kasper answered Coun. Herb Haldane’s queries as to how the money will be replaced.

“The biggest issue is the pay back com-

ponent,” said Haldane.

“We’re 300 grand a year short.” Haldane was commenting on the shortfall in revenues and the escalating costs for the operation of the sewer system.

“This was never a good deal - never,” he said.

Kasper said the district is faced with a “bit of a dilemma” and the district is allowed to use $295,000 out of the DCC reserve fund. But he said he agrees with Haldane because “in a very short period of time we will have virtually no money in the DCC reserve fund.”

Mayor Wendal Milne stated that the only way out was to look at the EPCOR contract and see if the district should run it themselves. If the district cancels the contract early there would be a penalty to pay. A fiveyear deal was signed in 2011.

Coun. Tait stated

she would be in favour of dismantalling the Finance and Administration Committee because it appeared that the committee was telling council what to do rather than the other way around. In reference to the budget she said there was no monies set aside for maintenance and upkeep for even the municipal hall.

In the end the vote to approve the Proposed 2014-2018 Five Year Financial Plan and the Property Tax Rate Bylaw passed with Councillors Tait and Haldane opposed.

Voting in favour were Councillors Kevin Pearson, Rick Kasper and Mayor Wendal Milne.

Milne stated that he thought it would be best if all of the budget deliberations were made by the entire council in the future and he apologized if there was any confusion.

Parents appreciate excellence in teaching

Parents of schoolaged children have a unique perspective on teachers.

Most parents are far removed from the days sitting in classrooms listening to lessons.

Regardless how they view their own experience, their interest in education takes new emphasis once their kids begin school.

Are the children getting good instruction, are they enjoying learning and making progress? All are ongoing concerns parents have as the school years roll by.

Teachers, and the work they do on a daily basis, are a central part of a positive answer to those questions and more.

Wendy Joyce, a public school parent since 2000, knows well that some teachers have more impact than others on how our children do in school and how they feel about time spent there.

“When I look at all the teachers we’ve encountered over the years, it’s not necessarily about who’s got the most experience, but more about who can inspire the kids, who’s engaging and who can make that connection with kids,” she says.

Taking time to get to know a student and what makes them tick is also a key ingredient to making a difference, she adds.

She recalls that her son’s Grade 5 teacher took an interest in him and enjoyed reading his writing, but was also aware he had a younger sister. Upon being shown a colourful painting by the Grade 2 sibling, the teacher bought a matte for the work and quietly gave it to the brother, saying the painting would look nice framed.

Fast forward eight years to today. Having heard her daughter remark how she is enjoying social studies class for the first time, Joyce gained a glimpse

into why, during a parent-teacher interview.

The teacher told Joyce that he doesn’t focus primarily on marks, but is also concerned whether his students are stressed out about school or life in general, or have anxiety about pending exams.

“It showed me that he’s taking a real interest in kids’ well-being,” she says. “They have a lot of time set aside in class to talk about things and debate things, or he talks about his own experiences, to show them he’s also a human being.”

Such a holistic approach seems to get the best out of students, who feel they are special or that they matter, Joyce says.

John Bird, president of the Victoria Confederation of PACs, has been around local schools for 26 years and has had six children of his own come through the system.

To his experience, technology has played a part in children being more knowledgable when they get to school these days.

“We’re moving from

simply giving them information to teaching them how to process information,” he says.

The best teachers get students excited about learning, he says, instead of trying to make them conform.

Bird uses an analogy from his basketball coaching experience as an example.

“We’re coaching kids at a younger age to be more dynamic players than we used to.

They know more about the game by the time they (start playing),” he says. “The youngest kids have it already and the best teachers make sure they don’t dampen it.”

Joyce has heard various times from fellow parents over the years how “that teacher just does not get my kid.”

She doubts anyone could go through the entire K-12 with their

child and not encountering both types of teacher.

She lights up when talking about running into teachers her children have had in past who ask about them, their unique interests and the direction they appeared to be taking in prior years.

That kind of connection, she says – clearly they were paying close attention to their students at the time – can’t help but have an impact on children down the road.

“That says to them, ‘I’m a special individual to this person, I’m important,’” Joyce says. “All those things that really make a difference.”

For more than 50 years Sooke Marine Industries has been a fixture along Kaltasin Road. The huge steel floats at the end of the driveway now show signs of rust and age.

The many buildings are still sturdy enough but it is the marina in the basin and the shipyard that holds the value for new owner Jenkins Marine.

One could say the welding the torch has been passed onto the new owners by Maywell Wickheim, the man who built the business up over five decades.

Maywell Wickheim has been a teacher, mentor and holder of knowledge in Sooke for probably most of his 89 years.

“I never had a better boss or mentor,” said former employee Kerry Fea. “He allowed me to challenge myself without fear of failure.”

Fea was an employee of Wickheim’s more than 50 years ago and had stopped by to say hello on a blustery spring day. Fea said Wickheim told him to ‘go ahead and when you come to a problem you can’t figure out — come to me.’”

Wickheim is not one to look for kudos or pats on the back.

He does what he does without a thought of looking for gratitude.

He has spent his life in Sooke volunteering for so many projects, organizations and events it is impossible to even begin to name them.

He gives where he can and expects nothing in return, except perhaps a thank you.

Wickheim was down at the boatyard and has formed a solid relationship with John Jenkins

from Jenkins Marine.

Both of these old salts have been in business “since the beginning of time,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins bought the Kaltasin boatyard at the beginning of the year and took over operations at the end of February.

“We’ll carry on with the same kind of business as before,”said Jenkins.

Jenkins Marine works on commercial ships and boats of all kinds, small boats, pleasure boats out of fiberglass, steel, aluminum and wood. They have built Thunderbird sailboats, SeaWest sports fishing boats, tugs, barges, you name it. Jenkins Marine is one of the largest and most stable boat

repair companies on Vancouver Island. They have been in business since 1964. They can do just about anything from custom modifications to engine replace-

ments, repairs, refits, joinery, haul outs, electrical and custom fiberglass.

Jenkins Marine will be bringing all of their operations to Sooke and are now slowly

work sheds and buildings, the boatyard and all of the equipment specific to metal work and boat repairs/building.

“There was no where else to go,” said Jen-

Refurbishing the boatyards and marina is an ongoing process

and a new cradle for boats has been built.

The new floats for the marina are being built and the whole enterprise is springing to life.

Welder/fabricator Brad Kellington is in one of the buildings making the frame for Carey Newman’s project, The Witness Blanket. Angie Bailey, long time employee of Wickheim’s is being kept on as a Jill-of-all-trades and will be managing the marina as one of her jobs.

Jenkins Marine employs five people at

the Kaltasin site and employs about 30 in their other operations.

“I just want to continue what is already going on,” said Jenkins of the boatyard.

“We are continuing the marine history that Maywell left here.”

I have noticed an increase in At a dinner party the other week we discussed the “lost art of letter writing”. How young people would love to get a letter in the mail and many older people even if they are computer savvy, still like to receive letters. Bears are out of hibernation, time to be aware Britt Santowski Sooke News Mirror

It was bound to happen. One story of food stolen from a freezer would inevitably lead to other similar calls.

Tammy Thomson, who lives just off Whiffin Spit, called in to report a similar theft.

Only, in this case, the culprit was a bear.

She and her roommate had a tarp-covered freezer on their porch. On the morning of April 17, they awoke to discover the tarp was “pulled off no problem” and the contents spilled overnight. There were signs that someone (or something) enjoyed an early breakfast of (frozen) waffles, bacon, mixed berries,

near their picnic table in the backyard.

Looking back, Thom-

son recalled hearing a “sound like a brick wall falling down” in the fog of sleep, shortly after she had fallen asleep.

It must have been the bear.

Thomson and her roommate figure the bear came by at around 10:30 the night before, and raided the tarpcovered freezer.

“He even took the food to the picnic table,” details Thomson, “… and had a nice feast!” Grass compressions near the backyard picnic table, along with the scattered packaging remnants, verify the bear’s taste for fine table dining. “Maybe tonight I should leave him a nice checkered table cloth and maybe some candle light,”

Thomson joked.

A call to the conservation office revealed that there were reports of a garbage bear in the area last year.

Thus, we at the Sooke News Mirror find it very timely to remind our readership that we live in bear country, and it’s best to store all food and food-like items behind locked doors. Their sense of smell is incredible, and post-hibernation they are hungry little (or big) critters.

A fed bear is a dead bear.

Recent earthquake serves as warning Did you feel that last earthquake on Wednesday night last week?

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (emsc-csem. org) reported a 6.5 earthquake on northern Vancouver Island last week. Its epicentre was 85 km south-southwest of Port Alice.

Witness accounts on the EMSC detail the shakedown. “Was having a second glass of wine — thought, at first, that I better not have any more,” recorded one witness about 30 km away from the epicentre, “then realized that it was an earthquack [sic] — (better stop the wine) — lasted about ten to fifteen seconds.”

This recent shakeup might have you thinking about your own emergency preparedness. Some of you might be smug in your existing, excellent preparedness; some might be updating your kits; and others might be wondering where to start.

Fire Chief Steve Sorensen provided a few excellent words of wisdom the day after the earthquake.

His first piece of advice was on how to assess the possibility of a tsunami.

“If the ground in Sooke shakes hard enough that you can’t stand up, this is your warning that a tsunami may be coming.

Persons should evacuate all low lying areas immediately following the shaking and move to higher ground,” advised Sorensen. He added that the recommended safe-from-tsunami height in Sooke area is four metres

above normal sea level.

You can find out the sea level of any particular address using Google Earth (as opposed to Google Maps), a free downloadable application.

“If a major earthquake occurs in the Cascadia Fault (the big one), the wave would be expected to hit Sooke in approximately 55 minutes,” advised Sorensen.

Jeri Grant, the Juan de Fuca (JdF) emergency coordinator, offered up an Earthquake 101. The recent earthquake happened on the Nookta fault zone. This resulted in a side-to-side shifting, which does not cause the land to thrust up.

The Nootka fault experiences an earthquake about once in 10 years.

The Cascadia fault, which runs from Alaska down to northern California, will result in a “subduction, or mega thrust” quake. If that were to happen, Grant informed us, there

would be a substantial quake lasting two to three minutes.

In North America, the response to a quake like this is to “drop, cover and hold, and protect your head and neck,” said Grant. Stay away from windows and doorways.

A quake in the Cascadia Fault can result in a tsunami, confirmed Grant.

As soon as factual information is received by the District, said Sorensen, the Sooke Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) will inform residents what to do next, using Internet and Social Networking tools like Twitter.

“In the event of a major disaster, the Sooke Community Hall will be opened as an Emergency Reception Centre.”

Sorensen recommends having seven days of emergency supplies on hand. Grant echoed that, saying that number was a minimum recommendation.

Ideally, everyone would have a grab-and-go kit, an emergency supply, and a car kit was well.

“A new program entitled 26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness is also set to be launched at the beginning of May,” said Sorensen.

“This will detail how to put together a sevenday emergency kit in 26 steps.”

The May 3 Sooke Rotary Auction will have Sooke Emergency Program volunteers on hand, where additional information and handouts can be obtained.

There will also be a display at the very large Annual Emergency Preparedness Week display at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre in Colwood on May 4.

This event runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Nowadays I’m sure we all feel a little disappointed that because of changing times, All Sooke Day no longer leads our community celebrations, but in its glory days it brought fame and pride to Sooke in abundance.

Begun in 1934 as the annual celebration of the Progress of Sooke, it soon became All Sooke Day and attracted visitors here in the thousands. Standing timber chop, bucking, springboard chop, axe throwing, climbing, log birling, peavey logrolling, chokermen’s race and much more, the day was a whirl of excitement.

Sooke loggers threw their burly muscles into gear against competitors from around the world that traveled the international circuit vying for Canadian and World Championship titles. This scene showing the logging sports arena in 1985 came to the museum from Jan Farquhar, one of the many loyal fans supporting the big event. In my memory, the largest crowd on the Flats ran

to 13,000.

While we can’t pick him out in the photo, the announcer here was Bob Waters, a transplanted Aussie who made Sooke his home after World War II and made the Sooke Community Association his passion. The year before this photo was the 50th anniversary of the event, and the Sooke Region Museum teamed up with a lot of sponsors to produce a movie documenting the spectacular tradition. Now in video format, it can be seen at the museum.

Good thing we made the film (Sheila Whincup did a great job as director), as the tradition is now gone, with the 2002 All Sooke Day becoming the swan song for the extra-ordinary logging sports teams that truly put Sooke on the map. It took hundreds of volunteers to put the gigantic show together and to produce enough

succulent salmon and traditional Leechtown beef to feed the hungry hordes as well.

Eying up the two 80-foot climbing poles in the photo, just imagine the heart-stopping thrill of watching a climber buckled into his belt and spurs, running up the tree, clanging the bell at the top and descending again so quickly his spurs barely touched the pole. For myself, I remember watching each year and scarcely breathing until the climber was safely down again. There were times that an ambulance was needed.

Our Ed Johnson of Sooke became the World Champion, running up the pole and back down again in the unbelievable time of under 30 seconds!

Strangling local government Sometimes words fail and they did in last week’s editorial.

In pointing out two councillors, Bev Berger and Kerrie Reay, who excused themselves on a vote for the Five-Year Financial Plan, it may have appeared as though they did so by choice.

They did not. They left council chambers because of a ruling made in 2013 in a B.C. Supreme Court decision Schlenker v. Torgrimson. This stems from a situation where there was a conflict because of participation on the boards of directors of not for profit organizations. The Court of Appeal noted that the object of conflict of interest provisions in the Community Charter were to “prevent elected officials from having divided loyalties in deciding how to spend the public’s money… and who as directors were under a legal obligation to put the entity first.”

This ruling impacted elected officials and both Berger and Reay were aware there could be an indirect pecuniary conflict of interest. This could have resulted in their disqualification from public office. They knew this, I did not.

So, apologies to those two councillors for my not being clear enough in stating that the situation was “absurd” — not the councillors’ actions.

The issue at stake here and in the past editorial is that this decision is crippling government and the province needs to do something through legislation to change this situation. In small towns it is nearly impossible to find candidates for council who are not involved in the community or any of its myriad organizations. This can also hamper those who may wish to run for public office and it in turn hampers the organizations they are volunteering in.

Heaven knows it is hard enough to find volunteers.

On the other hand, the fact that it is an election year should have nothing to do with opinions in editorials and treading softly is a moot point as no one has, as yet, declared they are running for office.

Refinery will build a future for B.C. This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the B.C. environment in our lifetime.

The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the B.C. coast. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years.

My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed.

The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits.

There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words, the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands.

This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit double the CO2 of our new design.

Weaver of the BC Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery.

An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day of very dirty coke (much fouler than B.C. coal) which will be subsequently burnt in the atmosphere to create power.

The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada.

Construction of the refinery will create 6,000 jobs in B.C. for five years.

Operations at the refinery will result in more permanent jobs than any project has ever created in B.C. with approximately 3,000 direct jobs.

These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the refinery which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province.

The Canadian and provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations, will share in billions of new tax dollars each year.

Unfortunately our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery. They are focused on extraction which is more profitable than refining. One of them challenged me to spearhead the refinery myself, so I am doing that. We have a solid business plan and as a consequence Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend us most of the funds required to build the greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. We are

currently moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work.

We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations.

Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely. Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and U.S. government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada.

In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-ofthe-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea.

Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

The Rotary Club has been contributing to the Sooke community for more than two decades. With your help, we have built the Skateboard Park, the Rotary Pier, the Sooke Area Sign, the playground shelter at CASA, and a gazebo and garden safety improvements at Ayre Manor.

Youth is a strong focus for our club. Over the years, we have provided numerous scholarship and bursaries to help fund a bright future for Sooke youth. We support the Sooke Youth Council annually and financed the purchase of the Community Youth bus. In 2013, we funded improvements to facilities at the local Scouts and Girl

Guides camps and provided much needed computer equipment for students at Sooke Elementary School.

The Auction and Spring Fair is our club’s primary fundraiser, providing the means for these many worthwhile projects. The event has evolved far beyond fundraising, though, offering a full day of community activity for approximately 2000 visitors. It is a great venue for local businesses and organizations to showcase their products and services.

Wilderness is priceless In an article I wrote a few weeks ago I agreed with and support the no vehicles in the park stance taken by the CRD. As part of the article I cut and pasted a segment of the CRD’s mission statement regarding the Sea to Sea Green Blue belt, but neglected to send a draft of that article to the Mirror including “quotations” on the borrowed sentences.

Credit should be given where credit is due and I thank Mr. Martin for making sure that the CRD and partners be recognized for the incredible interconnection of park land used by so many.

letters logged, or somehow benefits mankind in an economic way is, somehow misconstruing what a wilderness park is. A wilderness park has a value far beyond money, or some conjured up equations. I mean really, if there were no people then everything would be wilderness wouldn’t it?

Real wilderness seems to stop once people take over, drive into it, and control it.

On a global level, the Earth’s population is ever increasing, and it is easy to comprehend that the planet’s true wilderness areas are ever decreasing, as are the number of species that exist in them.

Thus, these wilderness areas are becoming more valued all the time.

People will always seek these places out, just as the heavily-used park parking lots tell us. Once motorcycles, ATVs, SUVs, and other off road vehicles are allowed in a wilderness area, it is no longer wilderness. It is changed because the behavior of the animals changes, the atmosphere changes, the quietness is lost, and the feeling that you have escaped “civilization” is gone.

In my opinion, vehicles just bring too much activity for a wilderness area to remain wilderness. These areas are not just for people to enjoy, but for the inhab-

itants of a large, healthy eco-system to remain viable. There is no price you can put on that.

Escalating costs are unrealistic

There seems to be a misunderstanding in the municipal world that wages should increase every year and taxes should go up two, three or four times the cost of living. All in the name of better service or downtown improvements.

When are the people paying these taxes going to finally hit a breaking point? How low a standard are we willing to have before we say something. I fail to grasp the logic behind the increases as we see the rest of the world collapsing and making changes to cover the cost of rising debt. I’ll bet Greece was like us once upon a time. So remember in five years taxes are projected to increase by 15 per cent just here in Sooke.

Now add this to the rising ferry costs, post office, gasoline, Hydro rates and the millions to subsidize CRD recycling programs etc. Government wants to routinely increase every year so people will budget for it and

expect it.

What this does is make efficiencies irrelevant in the work place and the worst kind of inefficiency is the absolute acceptance of these inefficiencies.

So, I’m letting you all behind the curtain on this one because no one seems to be complaining out loud. And yes, I will be chastised for all this talk about the public interest because we are told people just don’t understand government... yada yada.

So, excuse me and let me be blunt for a moment. Our sewer operation cost was about $475,000 five years ago and now it is almost $1.2 million. Is it because we get better service? The boat launch was originally to cost $500,000 yet in the end $2.4 million give or take and it still costs 10 bucks to use it.

These were all part of your last few five year plans with minor increases. Just the cost of a cup of coffee per day they said. The district is doing about one-third of the business we did in 2007 yet we have the same staffing numbers.

Remember the efficiencies I mentioned?

Council needs to bring in a five-year plan that reflects the realities of the day. Or, as governments become less and less efficient, the more it will cost to live under its umbrella.

What, are you kidding me? A plan is of the utmost importance, don’t you think? All those not in favour of this motion, please take one giant step backwards.

Those who fail to plan, are doomed to repeat history. “I don’t think the outlook is sustainable,” said Maja Tait... Shouldn’t that have been brought up during discussions, in camera, prior to vote and more specifically, definitions on what are the non-sustainable possibilities, so that mayor and council can come to some sort of an agreed plan, prior to the final vote? Lori (Ogden) Smith Sept 30 1949-Apr 13 2014 Lori passed away at home surrounded by loved ones after a brave fight with cancer.

Lori was born in New Westminster to Fred and Kitty Kwasnycia. The family moved to Sooke in 1953. She married Rod Ogden in 1967 and they raised two wonderful daughters. Port Alberni was their home from 1991, until Rod’s passing in Feb 2011. Lori moved back to Sooke and subsequently married Don Smith in 2012, who took exceptional care of her until her passing.

Lori was predeceased by her parents Fred and Kitty Kwasnycia and her beloved brother Larry Kwasnycia. Lori is survived by her loving husband Don, her two daughters Lesa Ogden and Alena(Scott) Christensen, her three precious granddaughters Sara Ogden, Sydnee Ogden-Moore and Hayley Christensen, her sisters Lynne(Jim) Barber and Leah(Dan) Butler, her sisters in law, Judy(Tom) Nicks, Cathy McCully and Shirley Roy along with numerous other family and good friends.

We also would like to give a very Special Thank You, to Dr. Ellen Anderson, the house support staff and Sooke Hospice Society. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food bank. I like what CAO Gord Howie said, “the District can go ahead and prepare the bylaw as it is now and council can then amend it.” So, is he saying that this is not written, with blood on stone, but rather a solid plan that can be amended (at some point) down the road, if need be?

What a concept, a plan that can be changed to suit ongoing situational requirements, based on needs and economy.

I would like to provide clarification as to why I removed myself from the budget discussion and vote. The Court of Appeal of BC delivered a legal opinion on January 11, 2013 in the matter of Schlenker v Torgrimson, stating “At Bar, the question is whether the respondents took on conflicting responsibilities as local councillors and Society directors such that they could not participate in decisions awarding contracts to the Societies.” 2013 BCCA 9. In a unanimous decision, the Court of Appeal of BC found that in doing so would be a conflict of interest and not only a conflict but also a pecuniary interest under section 101 of the Community Charter. A finding of such would disqualify a Councillor from office.

Thank you for David Black’s well-reasoned and informative op ed piece April 23 in the Sooke News Mirror. I was reminded how horrific and permanent a tanker spill of bitumen would be given the fragility of our coast and

the near impossibility of the oil’s recovery.

It’s never been clear to me. I thought the People’s Republic of China bought huge amounts of “our “ tar sands and it’s basically their oil we are piping through B.C. Are we taking an enormous risk shipping private property through one of the few pristine places we have left?

Finally Mr. Black urges us to contact our local MP’s to register our concern. If you live in a Conservative riding it’s guaranteed “your” MP has been taught the “Sit, stay, repeat after me command.” Harper has purchased those MPs like China has purchased “our” oil.

Four of Sooke’s young men have made the cut to play with the Victoria Shamrock’s team. The Shamrocks play what is called “Box Lacrosse,” or indoor lacrosse. The play area is tighter, the net is smaller, and the game is rougher than its outdoor counterpart. Box Lacrosse has existed as a sport since the 1930s.

What does it mean to you to be a Shamrock lacrosse player?

As a kid growing up, I watched the Shamrocks play lots.

I thought it would be the best thing ever to wear the Shamrock Jersey, and now that I have been signed, it is a great feeling to wear it myself.

I watched the Shamrocks growing up, and I always wanted to play for them when I got older.

And now, here I am. I feel honoured to be a part of a high level lacrosse team with so much history, and that has such a positive impact on the community.

I grew up watching them, so now to be a part of them is a dream come true. I’m honoured to be representing our whole city at this level of the sport.

It means a lot. There’s a great lacrosse tradition, and a lot to live up to. I’m excited about the challenge. I hope to make the Shamrocks proud and lever a championship game to Victoria.

What words of wisdom would you offer to other future lacrosse players?

Charles Richardson was recognized as man of match from EMCS, and Cody Wist received the same honour from Belmont.

It was an intense game with plenty of stiff hits. In true rugby fashion, both teams gathered post game for some words of acknowledgement and a group photo. With it all tied up, and the Sookehalla cup winning criteria not clearly defined, it looks like a rematch down the road is in order for the coveted cup to be determined.

What are your goals for this season?

The Sookeahalla Cup was played on Thursday, April 17th on a rainy track at Edward Milne between the EMCS Wolverines and the Belmont Bulldogs. The cup is the brainchild of former EMCS VP Mike Huck in recognition of the road between the two schools.

The game ended in a 5-all tie, with Belmont tying the game with a late try. This was the third game of the season between the two schools.

Belmont edged EMCS 12 - 10 in the opener, EMCS won 24-5 at Westhills, and this third game resulted in a tie.

Work hard, keep your stick in your hand, never stop learning the game.

Are the Russians coming?

Every October, during the Chum fishing season on the Sooke River, we are used to hosting fishermen from distant parts of the world. While these are mostly from the UK we may well see some from Russia in the future after the Russian Fly Fishing Magazine published an article about the local fly fishing adventures.

This handsomely illustrated 10-page article showed that our fish are not only very abundant, but also much larger than in Eastern Russia. The article originally intended as narrative for a YouTube video on ethical fishing practice (http://www. westcoastflyfishers.

moting local resources and businesses, and even the complete list of “Dos and Don’ts” when fishing rivers during salmon spawn-

ing season with which the Westcoast Flyfishers Association has been promoting ethical angling behaviour on our rivers. Interestingly, this article is complemented by a full-page add promoting catch and release practices, which seem to be quite new in Russia.

So, if after this publication, we may expect hosting more fishers from Russia, they will hopefully arrive already steeped in the local fishing ethics.

no roads just one track for the racers,” said Gustavs. “A couple of times the media vehicle was not the most reliable, it would break down in the middle of no where. The driver stops, ushers us out and pulls out a tool box and starts changing stuff. They would always fix it.”

Gustavs spent the last year filming rather than riding. He suffered a knee injury and has been giving it time to heal. He said this was the first time he hasn’t ridden since he was 13-years-old.

“It’s a nice away to realize I miss it, it’s where I feel at home.

The big thing from biking is discipline and balance. All of my filming stuff is thanks to the mountain biking community.”

A

trip to Mongolia last year married Pelle Gustavs’ love for cycling with his passion for film making. Gustavs spent two weeks in the land of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan filming 108 cyclists taking part in the Genco Mongolia Bike Challenge (MBC).

The riders pedaled over 1,000 kilometres in the race that stretched out across the Mongolian steppes, and Gustavs was there to film it.

His Mongolian adventure started in 2011 in Langford when a flat tire on his bike led him to Oak Bay Bikes and Chris Dickinson and Dan Scott. They soon had Gustavs riding cross on Tuesday nights, a type of riding which is different than mountain biking.

“It started in Belgium,” said Gustavs explaining what ‘”cross” is. “They would race as a thing to do to stay active and took shortcuts through fields.”

Gustavs was soon racing and filming the short cross races in Victoria.

“Cross is really popular even if you work full time, an hour effort can be a competition,” he said.

So cross it was for Gustavs and that led to him meeting Carter

Hovey in late 2011, who was sponsored to race the Genco Mongolian Bike Challenge. He filmed Hovey riding on Vancouver Island and the resulting video was seen by the marketing director for the MBC. Mongolia then became a reality for the 23-yearold from East Sooke.

After three days in Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia, it was off to the wind swept plains which dominate most of the country.

Mongolia is one of the most sparsely populated independent

countries in the world, with a population of 2.9 million. It is landlocked with little arable land with mountains to the north and west and the Gobi Desert to the south. Its people are nomadic but urbanization is leading the younger generation into the cities.

The contrast of country and city is extreme and a way of life is fading, said Gustavs.

If a nomad gives up his livestock then he is no longer allowed the freedom of the open plains.

Gustavs isn’t limiting himself to anywhere or anything. He’s open.

“We definitely have the trails, the terrain, even on Vancouver Island specifically.”

He wants to get back on his bike and train, because one day he wants to attempt the Mongolian Bike Challenge as a rider.

“You go into town and all you own is four walls,” said Gustavs of the urbanized Mongolian. “They have a lot of pride,” referring to the nomads who make up 30 per cent of the population.

It was an eye-opener for him, an adventure where he was exposed to chaotic traffic, gers (yurts), camels, yaks,

and the sturdy Mongolian horses.

His seat for the next two weeks was not on a bicycle but in a media 4X4. It was a race for him, in a way, as he had to keep ahead of the riders to capture the shots.

“It was go, go, go… the drivers were fearless. The shocker for me was that there were

The contest called for photos that captured the theme, “Thank a Volunteer: Because Volunteer Work Speaks Volumes.” Duffus is Director of Marketing and Communications for Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue based in East Sooke.

Local musicians play for benefit

T

wo Vancouver Island musicians will be performing in Sooke on behalf of abandoned animals on May 3 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on Murray Road. All the proceeds from the event will go to the Sooke Animal Food and Rescue Society (SAFARS).

SAFARS is a charity group specializing in the rehabilitation of feral and stray cats.

This hardworking society, comprised exclusively of volunteers, has also created three animal food banks; one

in Sooke, as well as in the Beecher Bay First Nations Reserve and at Our Place Society in Victoria to help prevent the abandonment of animals.

The plight of abandoned and feral cats along the west side of Vancouver Island struck a chord with two musicians. Dave Gallant and Taylor Caspersen volunteered to head up the concert night, with Dave Gallant and Friends, The Taylor Caspersen Project and other special guest performers.

Gallant has been

on the Island music scene for over 40 years. His eclectic repertoire includes influences from Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. He has worked with countless musicians and for many years has been president of the Sooke Folk Music Society. www.sookefolkmusicsociety.com The Taylor Caspersen Project is headed by Taylor Caspersen, a young, charismatic Sooke musician and performer. Caspersen started his journey

with music when he was only four by raising money for young leukaemia patients.

Taylor also performed at the Farmer’s Daughter open stage shows, with host Dave Gallant. The band’s music tastes includes blues, classic rock, glimpses of progressive rock and folk-rock with heavy acoustic undertones.

Literacy Week at Saseenos Elementary – March 31 – April 4, 2014 Literacy Week at Saseenos Elementary was really fun!

We did all sorts of activities every day of the week. We did a ton activities that most students did not know how to at first. On Monday, we had an assembly to explain what Literacy Week was going to be. First we had Mrs. Haddad’s Grade 3/4 do a little skit to show us the activities and then

Mr. Sulzen’s Grade 4/5 class did a presentation.

The whole school played a game called Literacy Pursuit. The Kindergarten class was paired with the Grade 3/4s. There were teams for each game and each team had to answer questions on fairy tales. The team with highest correct answers won the game. I was on Team B and even though my team lost we had a lot of fun.

On the third day of Literacy Week we had Dana Waite, the editor of The Paper Mache, a newspaper

for students, visit our school. She told us how we could make our writing interesting. We had guest readers visit our school every day. We also got to dress up as our favorite book character.

On Friday, the Sooke Lion’s Club made pancake breakfast for the whole school. Friday was also our Poem in Your Pocket Day. Literacy Week was a lot of fun.

Tina Acosta-Delgado wants to help people in India and she is doing this by mowing lawns and donating the profits to the India Village Relief Fund.

“I just felt like other countries needed help,” said Acosta-Delgado.

“Why not?”

She said, “We are so lucky to be in our country Canada.”

Being able to do whatever one wants, to be as successful as one wants is possible in Canada.

“We live very selfishly. I think if every entrepreneur donated 1 per cent of their profit each month to different organizations we can help the women (who don’t have the chance we do here). We can start to change things around the world,” said Acosta-Delgado.

Acosta-Delgado raised $775 over the past month or so by cutting lawns for residents in Sooke and East Sooke and has donated it to the relief fund. Her business, Elite Garden Maintenance, cut lawns every Saturday with the money going to help women in India.

She plans on continuing her charitable work by donating a portion of her profits to different charitable organizations and encourages other women entrepreneurs to do the same.

The India Village Poverty Relief Fund supports sustainable social justice projects tailored to improving the lives of impoverished villagers in India. Their goal is to enable the marginalized to have control over their lives.

Earth Day celebrated at Ecole Poirier In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), the students at Ecole Poirier put on an Earth Day musical for the entire student body, teachers and parents. The play was written by Mrs. Arts and Mrs. Robertson. Students from Grades 4 and 5 auditioned for the play, and about 150 students from the choir sang the songs. Mrs. Arts made a point of saying the singers memorized all the words, so that photocopies were not required and another tree saved.

The

Rotary merely facilitates these offerings.

In keeping with the energizing theme, the Rotary is once again offering a free swim. “It was massively successful last year, very well attended,” said Bridal.

Energize with a dip in the pool, and then come over to the arena for a bite to eat and put in a bid — or two.

Bridal also reminds us that Mother’s Day is but one week after the Rotary Auction. “This is a great opportunity to pick up something nice for that special person in your life.”

Musical entertainment lined up for this year’s auction includes Janet McTavish, the Sooke Folk Music Society, Journey middle school’s Rock Band, and the Sooke Philharmonic String Quartet. The Sooke Dance Studio offers a performance from 1-2 p.m.

Why, the annual duck race of course!

In just over a week from now, a swarm of yellow racing ducks will be riding the current along Sooke River to the finish line, where some lucky duck will make an easy grand for the winner.

Indeed, on Saturday, May 10, the Sooke Harbourside Lions will be hosting their eighth annual duck race at the Sooke River Flats (the Sooke campground), on Phillips Road just past SEAPARC. The duck race started eight years ago as a fun way to raise money for juvenile diabetes research and Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan. It’s turned into a fun family day, that includes a bouncy castle, arcade-type games, a balloon-making clown, face-painting, cupcake decorating, and oh so much more according to Jane Bed-

Overseen by Event Chair Joanne Phillips, the event is a family friendly and affordable fun day out. Most of the proceeds are raised through the duck adoptions, so those who have a little extra to donate for the activities are encouraged to do so; those whose priori-

ties rest with their own expenses at this point in time can also participate, without donating.

There are fixed prices for the food and beverages sold on site.

Raffle tickets are sold for each duck in the race. Ducks are “adopted” out for $5 per duck. A five-pack “Quack Pack” sells for $20. All the ducks are numbered and the first six ducks across the fin-

ish line win cash prizes for their adopted parents. Prizes, from first to sixth, are for $1,000, $500, $400, $300, $200 and $100. Ducks coming in seventh and beyond honour their holders with the joy of participation.

Tickets are available for purchase at Sooke Shoppers Drug Mart, Sooke Peoples Drug Mart, Sooke Pemberton Holmes and from any Harbourside Lion.

Look for the waving lifesized duck on Thursday nights as the Lions gather by the Sooke River Bridge, waving specifically at you.

Race day is May 10, the day before Mother’s Day. Gates open at 11a.m., and duck tickets will be sold until

noon. The ducks are dropped in the river by 1 p.m., hopefully crossing the line between 1:30 and 2pm (depending on the wind!!!)

This race has turned into a very successful fundraiser for the club… raising close to $50,000 over the past eight years.

“We have racing ducks this year,” laughs Jane Beddows in conversation at the Sooke News Mirror office.

“They are warming up at Kemp Lake, doing their paddling exercises.” And don’t worry about the older ones.

They are enjoying their retirements.”

Clearly, no ducks are harmed before, during or after the event.

The 24th annual Victoria Harbour Boat Show is thrilled to welcome a few brand new features to the annual event.

There’s no better place for kids to discover their inner sailor than at the boat show’s Nautical Play Centre located in the Kids Zone! – a safe, fun, kid-focused area that offers young families a chance to take a break from navigating the show floor.

The Kid Zone’s friendly, energetic staff have plenty of fun activities planned for aspiring young boaters, including building and decorating boats, nauticalthemed craft tables and much more – all specifically designed for kids only.

Visitors can also take in the Sailing and Life Training Society’s (SALTS) two tall ships, the Pacific Grace and the Pacific Swift, that will be cruising into Victoria’s Inner Harbour Friday afternoon, May 2. SALTS’ 138’ schooner Pacific Grace will also thrill visitors with free tours for show attendees on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4.
