Charges have been laid in relation to the stabbing of four people in Abbotsford on Saturday. William Anton Butz, 34, has been charged with four counts of

three other victims – a 37-yearold woman and two men, ages 19 and 35 – have been released from hospital. The four victims were among a small group of people gathered in a basement suite in the 31400 block of Springhill Court.

On a hot July morning, the Geldermans’ blueberry fields on Sumas Prairie are peaceful. The blue sky overhead is free of clouds – and more importantly – starlings. Man charged with sexual assault Suspect under investigation for similar prior attack Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A 43-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged with sexual assault and committing an indecent act following an incident on Saturday. On that day just before 2 p.m., an 18-year-old female contacted the Abbotsford Police Department to report that she had been waiting at a bus stop in the 2400 block of Montrose Avenue – in front of Abbotsford Community Services – when she was grabbed by a man. Const. Ian MacDonald said the man wrapped his arms around the victim from the front and wouldn’t let go. MacDonald said the victim was able to free herself, and the man then moved a short distance away and appeared to be exposing and touching himself. Patrol officers interviewed the victim and a witness, and located and arrested a man matching the description still in the area. Amrik Singh Kular has since been charged. MacDonald said police are investigat-

of Peardonville Road. In that incident, an 18-year-old woman was working outside when she was grabbed by a man who wrapped his arm around her body. She was able to break free and call police. The suspect in that case was described as South Asian, 40 to 50 years old, 5’ 7”, clean-shaven with short black hair, a large nose and a heavy build with a large belly. Police released a composite sketch of that suspect. MacDonald said the man’s description and his actions are similar to the attack on Saturday, but investigators have not yet been able to definitively conclude that it is the same suspect. Kular has been released from custody on $1,500 bail and is next scheduled to appear Aug. 18 in Abbotsford provincial court. According to the provincial court database, he has one prior conviction, which occurred in 2009 for impaired driving. He was sentenced to two years’ probation and an 18-month driving ban.

Recalling the inspiration for adventure Mark

Other Hand In 1978, back in the day before ATVs were invented, or at least in common use, and four-wheel drive trucks weren’t even close to the proliferation they are today, a buddy and I spent seven days on horseback exploring the back country north of Lillooet. We marveled at the places we could get to and the vistas revealed, accessible only on horseback. And throughout that adventure we encountered not another soul, despite crossing an occasional and rarely used track created primarily as an access route for fire suppression. Eroded in many places, and certainly only really traversable by a 4x4, we remarked at the ease our horses could use it and the many game and cattle trails that led to places few people had ever seen. At the end of the adventure, horses and
gear in the trailer, we enthusiastically praised ourselves on going where few had gone before. On arrival home we impressed upon all who would listen what a great and remote adventure we had experienced. Then, not a week after arriving back in the Fraser Valley, there on a section front of the Vancouver Sun was a photo of a Datsun 510 sedan parked on the side of one of the China Heads, three small mounds dominating a large level expanse of mountain at about 7,000 feet elevation, and about 200 yards or so off what we had assumed was a virtually impassable forest access road. Dismayed that someone had just burst our bubble of exclusivity and the image of horseborne travel being the only feasible mode of transport in that country, I read the story accompanying the photo. Sure enough it was written by Paul St. Pierre, the man who in many ways brought the Cariboo/Chilcotin to the world. Paul was a long-time columnist for the Vancouver Sun, and back in 1960 wrote a captivating CBC television series Cariboo Country that convinced a kid like me to one
day explore that fascinating and then very remote area of British Columbia. Paul’s columns and many books detailed the lives of common, hardworking folks eking out a living in the bush with horses and cows. He meticulously described the lives and beliefs of the native Indians who dominated the population of that area, and through his Cariboo
Paul St. Pierre, the man who in many ways, brought the Cariboo/Chilcotin to the world. Country TV series, made a major Hollywood star of First Nations icon Chief Dan George. In the mid-1980s Paul St. Pierre walked into my office at The News, and proposed writing a column for community newspapers in place of his works being published in the Vancouver daily. I jumped at the chance, and for a number of years his “Wry and Ginger” graced the pages of this and several other community newspapers.
Paul and I became friends over the years, even inviting me on a number of occasions to join him at his place at Big Creek to bird hunt. Regrettably, I never took him up on the opportunity, as I’m certain such an incredible storyteller would have provided me with column fodder for years to come. I last had lunch with Paul in Squamish in 1992. We talked about his column writing, his winters in Mexico, his few years as a Member of Parliament for Coast Chilcotin, his wife’s horse, and why I really should take a week in the fall to join him hunting sharptails. On Sunday, at 90 years old in his home at Fort Langley, Paul St. Pierre left us and his visions of B.C.’s central interior forever. He was a man who chose to spend most of his life honouring and exposing a simple and mostly silent part of British Columbia that he loved with his soul, and described so wonderfully in his writings. For introducing me to that part of the world, I am forever in his debt and will, on my next visit upcountry, raise a glass of Scotch in his memory. markrushton@abbynews.com

Nothing good to say? Just don’t say anything at all Having graduated from here, raised my family here, I can truthfully say the people here are some of the most amazing people in the world. In the last few weeks, Abbotsford has become very busy newswise, and shooting the events as a videographer lets me see some very good things and some very bad things. First, the good: The first responders in this community are some of the best in the world.
They have a tough job and deserve your respect. I am truly grateful for the job each and every one of them does day in and day out. Now the bad: Parents, please teach your children some respect. Having to listen to some very immature little girls, yelling “Rest in peace!� and “I hope you don’t die!� as a strong tough lady fighting for her life is wheeled to the helicopter is not cool. blocked. This after having a shooting with a possible suspect in a house – all the while in the back of their heads remembering what happened back east when two brave members died. Of course, they are going to do everything by the book, and for the next while that book is
going to be tightened up. If you want to watch the show, leave the members alone. I think many out here have forgotten what it was like during the gang-war days. Times have changed and the police have to do things by the book, so if a little traffic dis-

BC Hydro distributed more eviction notices this week as it prepares to remove two homeless camps on Thursday from its land along Gladys Avenue. Earlier this month, BC Hydro posted “no trespassing” signs and issued eviction notices, requiring residents to vacate the property by July 31 at 10 a.m. The Crown corporation did the same last week, and again on Tuesday. Hydro spokesperson Mora Scott said safety concerns prompted the Crown corporation’s decision to evict the campers from its land. “The current situation isn’t sustainable as the camps are close to an active rail corridor and electrical equipment, which creates serious safety concerns,” Scott said. “We continue to work collaboratively with the municipal government staff and local social service providers to ensure occupants are respectfully transitioned off the property.
“Our hope is that [the land] is vacated by July 31,” Scott said. “We’ve acquired bailiff services to ensure public safety and that all legal processes and requirements are met.” Ward Draper, an advocate for the homeless and pastor with 5 and 2 Ministries, said it’s unclear what will actually happen on July 31, when the eviction deadline expires. “I’ve heard the full spectrum, from ‘We’re not going’ to ‘We’re going,’ ” he said. Each resident has different needs, Draper noted. While an increased housing supplement from BC Housing is welcomed and may help some residents, Draper said the most pressing need is immediate and accessible housing. Beyond that, he said: “There’s no one answer for this complex situation.” With uncertainty surrounding what will occur Thursday, Draper said he would like to see Abbotsford residents come to the site to show support for the city’s homeless.

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

The province has adjusted its new minimum prices for alcohol in the wake of criticism over the rollout of new rules allowing “happy hour” discounts. A new category for draft beer creates a minimum charge of $12 for a 60-ounce pitcher – down from $15 previously announced – or 20 cents per ounce for large volumes over 50 ounces instead of 25 cents, which still applies to smaller glasses and pints. “Upon reviewing B.C.’s minimum prices, we realized they weren’t on par with consumers’ expectations and we took action to find a fair compromise that still upholds B.C.’s high standards for health and safety,” said MLA John Yap, who heads the province’s liquor policy reforms. The new regulations let bars and restaurants charge lower prices for selective times or occasions, but forced some low-price establishments to raise prices to match the new minimums. That will still be the case for pints in some locales – bars that had charged less than $5 must raise their prices to that minimum for 20 ounces. The province has also increased the minimum price for spirits from $2 to $3 per ounce. Addictions experts had called for higher minimum pricing to reduce health and safety risks to drinkers. Alliance of Beverage Licensees executive director Jeff Guignard supported the spirit price increase in the interests of public safety, noting a patron previously could have bought five single-ounce shots for $10. But he said the lower minimum beer pitcher price of $12 against a minimum 20-ounce pint price of $5 may encourage over-drinking and intoxication. Provincial regulations limit a single serving of beer to 24 ounces, so pitchers can’t be ordered by a lone patron. The new minimums mean little for bars and restaurants that charge higher prices already.

Zero Avenue on the east side of Highway 13 will also be realigned and moved to the north side of the customs property. Sean Averill, senior project manager with the Canada Border Services Agency, said the project has been six years in the making, with land acquisition, budget allocation, First Nations consultation and design work finally coming to fruition. The construction contract was recently tendered to the Lark Group and the work began this week.

For us, it’s a big, big success.” The ARFC also sent a team to the final in the elite men’s division, but the Youngbucks from Vancouver prevailed by a 10-8 score. “We played well,” said Abby team member Dave Prins. “But we had a big semifinal against our classic rivals from Burnaby, and we came out a bit flat in the final. Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen, who was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in June, signed his first National Hockey League contract with the local club last Friday. The 17-year-old winger broke the news himself on Twitter, and the Canucks followed with a press release confirming the signing later in the day. “Such an honour to sign with the Canucks!” Virtanen wrote on Twitter. “I’d like to thank everybody who’s helped me get to this point especially my family!”
Virtanen, a lifelong Canucks fan, was chosen sixth overall by Vancouver in the NHL entry draft, making him the highest NHL-drafted player in the history of the Abbotsford Minor Hockey Association. It’s likely that Virtanen, currently recovering from shoulder surgery, will be back with the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen next season. He collected 71 points (45-26-71) in 71 regular season games with 100 penalty minutes during the 201314 campaign with the Hitmen.

GRIFFITHS Catherine Catherine (McRae) Griffiths passed away peacefully on July 19, 2014 at the Menno Home just three days after her 90th birthday. Catherine was predeceased by her husband of 60 years Gavin Griffiths in 2007, as well as all her siblings: George, William, Alexander, Isaac, Robert, Jean, Agnes and Margaret. She is survived by her loving family, son Gavin Griffiths Jr. (Darlene), three grandchildren Ryan (Jenny), Jody Wellicome (Cory), Troy and her five great grandchildren Taelor, Morgyn, Caden, Wyatt, and Carys. Catherine had a sweet, caring heart and lovingly welcomed everyone into her home for a cup of tea or coffee and something to eat. As well, no one would leave her home without taking some of her baked or canned goods, fresh vegetables or flowers from her garden. She loved spending her time with her friends and family at her place at Loon Lake where she welcomed everyone with open arms. She will be sadly missed by her family, many friends and relatives. As per Catherine’s request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Catherine’s name to the Alzheimer Society of BC. We love you Mom/Granny and you will be in our hearts forever. HUNTER, David William Dave’s family is sad to announce his passing on July 28th, 2014 after a courageous three month battle with a brain tumour. Dave was born in Vancouver on December 6, 1949. He was predeceased by his parents Bob and May and is survived by his wife Debby, son Scott (Jennifer), daughter Sandra (Andrew) and his beloved grandchildren Ashlyn, Corbin and Quinn. Also mourning his passing are his sister Donna, his aunt Margaret and his nieces and their families. A celebration of life will be held at the Abbotsford Rugby Club Clubhouse, 31929 Mercantile Way, Abbotsford on Friday, August 1st from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Friends are invited to come and raise a glass and share a memory of Dave. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation for brain cancer research.

Mitchell, Raymond Andrew Raymond passed away on May 31, 2014 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC. He was born in Edmonton, AB March 4, 1956. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 30 yrs., Pam; son Judd, (Madison Shea); daughter Rachel (Jake Mortenson); grandsons, Jaxon, Dexter, Alan; granddaughter, Bridget; brothers, Bill (Lisa), David (Suzanne) and sister, Winna and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Archibald and Frances Mitchell and nephew Travis Mitchell Standbridge. Ray drove dump trucks from his teens but in the 1980s he was asked to test out the Volvo rock truck that had come from Sweden. He drove them until Nov. 2013 when he took sick. He worked up and down the coast and spent 21 years in the Queen Charlotte Islands then on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. He spent 17 years in Scouting. He loved working and teaching the youth all about the outdoors and cooking. Those were some of his favorite times along with working with Judd and Rachel, his co-leader for a year. Raymond was also an active member at the Ridgedale Rod and Gun Club since 1991. He was the pistol chair and helped organize many pistol shoots. His passion was hunting and handguns. He would teach anyone who was interested. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Ridgedale Rod and Gun Club 35606 Harris Road, Abbotsford, BC starting at 1 pm and going all day and into the evening until 9pm. Feel free to come at any time and share stories, jokes, etc. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation in Ray’s name.

On Sunday July 27th, 2014, Margaret Anna-Marie Nicholas went to be with the Lord. Her husband James was at her side holding her hand as she entered heaven. She was born on April 7th, 1920 in Roblin, Manitoba to Helen and Robert Switzer. She leaves behind her husband James of 64 years and her three married children, David (Alvina) Nicholas, Claudia (Fred) Andrews. and Sharon (Stan) Sharkey, 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and her sister Helen Spies. She moved to Kelowna in 1946 where she met her husband and lived until 1962, and then moved to Terrace and Kitimat before settling in Abbotsford in 1967. Many may remember her as being the helpful and friendly co-owner of Abbotsford Hardware 1970 1990. For 9 years Margaret supported her husband who was the Director of Senior Ministries. Margaret was dedicated to her family and modelled a love of God. Special thanks to the Menno Home for the Christian care they gave Margaret the last 2 years, and Dr. Milne who would kindly visit her. Celebration of her life will be held at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly (3145 Gladwin Rd., Abbotsford) Saturday, August 2nd at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Mennonite Benevolent Society, 32945 Marshall Rd., Abbotsford, BC V2S 1K1.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mildred Smith, age 87, on July 25, 2014 at The Residence in Mission. She was predeceased by her husband Mark, brother Steve, sisters Elsie and Grace and her son-in-law Harold. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Eloise (Allan), Gail, Rosemary (Doug) and Trudy (Dave), nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and her newly arrived greatgreat granddaughter. Her unconditional love, her devotion to family, her much appreciated cooking and baking talents, her strong work ethic, her sense of right and wrong and her willingness to help others in need have all been an inspiration to everyone who knew her and her legacy will continue to live on through all the people in her family. She was a truly remarkable woman. Thank you to the staff at Pleasant View and The Residence in Mission for their excellent care and compassion. A private family service was requested.
