Whether er st er s staying ttay aayying a d day, a week or a month, th you’re sure to have the time of your life! Come visit, You’ll be glad you did.
The North Thompson River (365 km) originates at the foot of the Thompson Glacier in the
Cariboo Mountains then flows southward towards Kamloops where it joins the South Thompson, and eventually becomes a part of the Fraser River. In ancient times the river was used as a travel corridor by First Nations people – the Simpcw First Nation of the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation – as they moved their camps, hunting and fishing in accordance with caribou and salmon migrations. European trappers, prospectors, fur traders, and surveyors travelled the river in the 1800’s as they tried to find the fastest trading routes. In the mid to late 1800’s the Cariboo Gold Rush brought even more people to the region; hurrying on their way to the gold fields to “strike it rich”. As this influx of people travelled through the area many found the North Thompson Valley very much to their liking. As a result they stayed; homesteading the area with farmers, ranchers, miners, loggers, and trappers. Communities sprang up along the river, which continued to serve as a travel corridor, but now for steamboats and ferries. Today there are no longer any steamboats on the North Thompson, but for most of its length it is paralleled by Highway 5 (The Yellowhead), and the Canadian National Railway. The valley is cradled by rolling hills in the south, the soaring Caribou mountain ranges in the west and the towering Monashees in the north east. The valley can be reached in an easy day’s drive from Edmonton, Alberta, in the north east, and from the metropolis of Vancouver in the west. British Columbia’s ‘Tournament Capital’ Kamloops, is the southern gateway to the North Thompson Valley via Highway 5. Blue River is the most northern town of the valley, and is nestled in the shadow of the spectacular Monashee Mountain Range. Between these towns lies a valley with a natural setting ranging from gentle to rugged; it is a valley filled with numerous and exciting vacation possibilities. Lakes and rivers throughout the valley provide opportunities that the whole family can enjoy. One can experience everything from the rush of white water rafting, to the serenity of paddling a canoe on a lake so calm the skyline is mirrored in its waters. Fishermen find it a paradise. The valley offers so many lakes you will have to stay all summer long to enjoy the numerous angling opportunities available. Our back country provides hiking adventures for all levels of experience, rock hounding or climbing, mountain biking, ATV tours, and horseback riding. For those who prefer to explore the area from the back of their own horse the Barriere area offers 400 kilometres plus of mapped and maintained trails, with plenty of horse trailer parking and overnight facilities. Internationally renowned Wells Gray Provincial Park lies just north-west of Clearwater, the largest settlement in the valley. This and other Provincial Parks in the area offer camping on your own, or guided tours; the pace can be set by you. View the spectacular scenery from canoe, kayak, horseback or helicopter; your destination is limited only by your imagination. Modern accommodations are conveniently located along the route, as well as resorts and camping places which are all accessible from Highway 5. You have the option to enjoy five star hotels at Sun Peaks and Blue River, secluded top of the line resorts, hotels and motels, B&B’s, stay at a guest ranch, park your RV, or pitch a tent; of course the ultimate overnight experience is to sleep under a star filled sky and hear the coyotes and wolves sing the moon into the sky. Major settlements along the way have a variety of retail outlets to serve the needs of travellers. Restaurants range from fine dining to fast food; grab a quick snack or relax over dinner after a day’s travel. For a once in a lifetime experience try a gourmet heli-picnic at 7,000 feet above sea level in Blue River, or let the North Thompson take you to a secluded sand bar for a picnic. You can golf your way through, starting at Sun Peaks, to Chinook Cove, to Clearwater, and Wells Gray; or hunt out antiques in Heffley Creek, Louis Creek, and Clearwater. Visitors to the North Thompson Valley can find Festivals for Art, Music, Alpine Flowers, Mountain Bikes, Harvest Time and more. If there’s a little cowboy in you stop in at a Cowboy Concert, or share worship at an outdoor Cowboy Church. If you’re looking for fast paced action, or nostalgic sights, sounds, and smells try the Annual North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo held each Labour Day Weekend in Barriere. Many communities hold a once weekly Coffee House, where local musicians join together, just for the pleasure of those who want to listen. You’ll find Eco Tours throughout the valley, Yoga and Wellness Retreats, and any number of interesting and unique places to find that special souvenir to take back home. For photographers the valley is a smorgasbord of scenics, there is wildlife around every turn, and you’ll find bird photography opportunities abound. Yes, there is something for everyone in our North Thompson Valley – Welcome.
