Search & Rescue teams search the shoreline on the St. Mary River this past Saturday near the spot where 23 year old Alex Brown went missing.

Another search of the St. Mary River has yielded no results in the continuing effort to locate 23-year old Alex Brown, who went missing in the river on Saturday, July 5. “Another search was conducted on Saturday but unfortunately there is still nothing — no indication of where he might be,” said Kimberley

RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel. “We will continue to search, but not on as large a scale, as resources become available.” Newel said the river would be monitored and checked as river levels change, as that is most likely when a clue would be found. “If you recall the Findlay Creek incident last year when the two young men went into the river in their truck, it was once the water receded that we were able to find one of the young lads. If it hadn’t been for the water going down, it is doubtful we would have found him. As it was, if we hadn’t had a dog up there, it’s doubtful we

would have seen him.” Newel says he knows the uncertainty is hard on the family. “I know it’s tough for the family. We would like to bring closure as well. We would like to bring that to the family but unfortunately it hasn’t happened yet.” The search has been ongoing since July 5, with search and rescue teams from across the region taking part and Kimberley Search and Rescue taking command. Crews stood down late last week to rest and then mounted another effort this past weekend.

The B.C. Summer Games kick off this Thursday, July 17 in Nanaimo and over 3200 of BC’s best emerging high performance talents have registered to take part in the four day event. Kimberley will be well represented as usual. One of the athletes heading to the Island is carrying on a family tradition in triathlon. Sierra Cooper will represent the Kootenay Zone in triathlon and though only 13 years old, has been entering the Wasa Triathlon since she was four. Her involvement in the endurance sport can be directly related to dad Charlie, who has organized the Wasa event for years. He will be attending as an assistant coach for the triathlon athletes. “She’s done 10 full triathlons since she was four,” Charlie said of his daughter. “My wife and I both participate and our whole family really enjoy it. Every year we prepare for Wasa together. Usually for training we just keep them moving. But this year, with the Summer Games coming up we’ve built a

Sierra is doing laps in the pool, and then we’re throwing in some speed — biking and running.” There are actually five Triathlon events over three days, an Aquathlon (300m Swim/1km Run) on Friday, July 18, followed by a Duathlon (1km

Run/5km Bike/1km Run). On Saturday there is a Sprint Triathlon (500m Swim/ 10km Bike/3km run) followed by a Mixed Relay (4 X F1 triathlon). On Sunday, it’s the Triathlon itself, (200m Swim/3km Bike/1km Run).
