City of Colwood solar converts happily walkin’ on sunshine

The numbers represented her home’s energy consumption in watts, starting off at a negative because solar panels on her roof produced energy in excess of what the home was using and automatically supplementing what she needed when the dryer kicked in. That, she said, is the magic of the upgrades she has installed in her home through Solar Colwood. “It is actually cheaper,” she said. “You are paying up front, but benefiting all the way down the back end. If you’re going to stay in your house for any reasonable length of time, why wouldn’t you do it?”

The installation of the in-home charging equipment was paid for in part with a grant from Solar Colwood. Since the program was introduced in Colwood June of 2011, Cullington has installed solar photovoltaic grids, or solar panels, on her roof that allow her to charge her electric vehicle, a solar hot water system for her water tank and a ductless split heat pump. Despite spending thousands of dollars on purchases and installation – even after Solar Colwood grants were applied – she said it is an investment she is more than

happy to make. “The payback for the electric car will be four to five years,” she said, explaining that the savings would make it equivalent to buying a similar sized gaspowered car. “Those panels actually produce more energy than my car uses in a year, so I say I am running my car on sunshine.” She called her solar panels her “Alberta oil field on my roof” and estimates that it costs

her $15 a month to charge her car, a Nissan Leaf, forgoing gasoline completely. Once the gas savings pay for the price of the car, the rest is money in her pocket. The cost for her solar water retrofit would likely be a longer-term investment she said, closer to 10 to 15 years. With a lifetime expectancy pushing 25 years or more, the saving would eventually be there but Cullington believes money isn’t only factor.

“If you put in nice granite countertops (in your home) what is the payback on those? The answer is there isn’t one… You do it because you want to do it.” Solar Colwood spokesperson Glenys Verhulst admitted that for some homeowners, the up-front cost of the larger retrofit installations can be prohibitive. There are only six weeks left for the chance to buy a Harley Davidson for $20. For an eighth summer, Langford Fire Department is raffling off a motorcycle to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The prize is a 2014 Harley Davidson Fatboy, and with only 3,000 tickets being printed, the odds are pretty darn good. “It’s better odds than the lottery,” says Deputy Fire Chief Kerry Zado. He and other firefighters have been taking the bike around to car shows and swap meets, showing

off the shiny chrome and selling tickets. Their hope is to sell out well before the Aug. 17 draw. “We have to purchase the bike,” he says. “Steve Drane Harley Davidson gives us as good a deal as he can, and he covers the cost of insurance to transport the bike (to different venues).” But the bike still costs, so the more tickets they sell, the more goes to the cause. Zado says the money is used “to fund research, client services and education, and medical equipment to make the lives of people with muscular dystrophy a little more comfortable.” Firefighters have been fundraising since 1954 to help those battling the disease, he says. It all started when a firefighter needed help to fund medical equipment for his son. The father and a neighbour went door to door to fundraise and it took off from there. “It’s the charity of choice for

disease. Many forms of MD affect adults as well, male and female alike. It’s a wasting disorder, with the muscles of the body – including the diaphragm and heart – deteriorating over time. This usually leads to fatal breathing and heart complications.

“Oxygen therapy is probably the most common way to help. It doesn’t really slow down the process, but it helps them breathe and live longer,” Zado says. There aren’t really any treatment options beyond oxygen, but there are several drugs undergoing trials. For those living with MD, medical advancements and the research behind them are vitally important. For Zado, who’s been fundraising for 25 years, the Harley Davidson raffle presents an opportunity to contribute a substantial amount to the cause. “We’re about one third sold,” he says regarding ticket sales so far. There are varying applications for almost any household, from kits with free bathroom and kitchen aerators that don’t require tools to install, to loan programs through Vancity to help make the program more accessible now. “Having expensive electricity or gas bills is not affordable either. This way you get energy independence over the long run and sunshine is always free,” Verhulst said, “unlike what happens with electricity and other forms of energy, which you will always purchase from somebody else.” The program, funded through a $3.9-million federal grant established January of 2011, pays for the individual grants as well as the staffing cost for all the contractors, including Verhulst. Colwood staff time has been estimated at approximately $1.50 per household per year, a cheap price to pay to have the opportunity, she said. It is especially so in light of $1,000 a year savings for the Colwood Fire Department main hall related to a retrofit, and the electric car added to the city’s fleet. Royal Roads University director of sustainability Nancy Wilkin led a study on the program with several of her masters students. They monitored 13 homes, roughly a third of those retrofitted through Solar Colwood. The ongoing study looks at B.C. Hydro bills from before, during and after the upgrades and Wilkin said the results speak for themselves. “They have saved 44 per cent. They are directly saving money and you translate that to greenhouse gas emissions it is a 45 per cent reduction,” she said. “For the little town of Colwood, those are astounding percentages.” The lowest decrease in a bill was 25 per cent, the highest being 68 per cent. Efficiency of the households ranged, depending on numerous factors including the age of the house and amount of insulation already in the house alongside the homes size and layout. So far Solar Colwood has helped consumers take more than 1,500 energy-saving actions with approximately 400 free energy-saving kits, 100 ductless heat pumps and 40 solar hot water systems, the last figure second highest in Canada next to the Sooke First Nation. The program ends March 31, 2015, when all federal money for grants is pulled and any retrofitting goes up to full price. Royal Roads will release its study to the public in its entirety upon completion of the program. “There are lots of other important things to do as well, but making our community a leader is an important thing to do,” Cullington said. “Addressing climate change is important, helping our residents lower their energy bills is important. Royal Colwood golfer nails down B.C. junior title Sizzling front nine carries Ko to victory in Kamloops Naomi Ko of Royal Colwood Golf Club finished off with a birdie, one of four on the day, to win the B.C. junior girls golf championship by two strokes in Kamloops. Her final round of 73 and fourday total of 286 gave her a twoshot victory over Kathy Lim of Langley at The Dunes course. The tournament wound up last Friday (July 4).

Ko and Lim were tied at 213 in second, one back of leader Alix Kong of West Vancouver, heading into the final round. Boosted by birdies on the second, fifth and seventh holes, Ko went out in 35 to leap ahead of Lim by two. Meanwhile, Kong double bogeyed five and six en route to a front-nine 41. Kong closed the gap on the back nine, shooting even par for eight holes as Ko and Lim bogeyed twice each, but all three players birdied the par-5 18th. Ko opened with a blistering 4-under 69, rattling off five birdies to one bogey. She followed

up with a 74 and 70. The West Shore resident, 16, has had a stellar season in 2014. Make summer fun time for all Summer burst into its full glory this week on the West Shore. Time to fire up the barbecue, head to the beach and enjoy the sun. However, without becoming a total buzz kill, here are a couple of points that seem to need repeating every year. First: Be careful out there. Our beaches along the Colwood and Metchosin coastlines, and popular lakes like Thetis, Langford, Matheson and Glen Lake, are inviting on hot days, but are also potentially deadly. Undertows and large waves on the ocean, and underwater snags and inattention to water depth in lakes can bring tragic results, as can spending too much time in the direct hot sun. It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway, that alcohol and the water simply do not mix. Not only is it unsafe, it’s illegal. The summer sun is great, but remember it can also can be a killer. Don’t leave your pet in a vehicle for any reason, for any length of time. An open window and a bowl of water won’t help an animal trapped in a hot car. Remember, too, that the sun we miss so much during the winter rains packs a wicked punch. Recent reports indicate that instances of skin cancer remain high, despite years of warnings. So if you’re going outside, even if the clouds creep in, slather on the sunscreen. Second: Be respectful. The simple rule – you pack it in, you pack it out – seems lost on far too many people. Enjoy that early morning coffee by the lake, but don’t leave the empty cup on the bench for someone else to dispose of. Gathering up all your garbage and leaving it in a green garbage bag by trash can for later pickup is a nice thought. And speaking of which: if it’s your dog, what’s left behind is your responsibility. Our area has some spectacular parks and walking trails; they’re not made better studded by dog feces. The West Shore is a great place to be in the summertime. Following a couple of simple rules can make it even better.

Aboriginal title is a complex notion Just some clarifications regarding Tom Fletcher’s column, Life after the Tsilhqot’in decision (B.C. Views, July 2). 1. Federal and provincial authority may vary with the strength of an aboriginal title claim, as Fletcher contends, in the sense that the obligation to consult and accommodate is proportional to the strength of the claim. But this is not so once aboriginal title has been proved in court (as the Tsilhqot’in have done). Once such title is established it is no longer a matter of a “claim” and the aboriginal owners must consent to any development proposal respecting their land – unless the government supporting such a development meets the stringent constitutional test for limiting aboriginal rights and title in the absence of consent. 2. A finding of aboriginal title does not necessarily “lock in” communal ownership. Just as treaty First Nations may agree to convert land to fee simple title, aboriginal title holders may

agree to surrender land to the federal Crown on the condition that it be re-conveyed to them for the purpose of conversion to fee simple. I suspect that obtaining such agreement is no easier in the former scenario that the latter, but it may be. 3. The Tsilhqot’in had a long history of keeping others out, and were the only First Nation that was hostile even to the fur trade. But they did not fight a war in the 1860s to defend their territory from a “wave of gold seekers.” They expelled everyone. In 1864, after being threatened by the foreman of a crew building a wagon road through their territory – he had warned darkly of bringing back the small pox that had killed at least one third of their population two years earlier – they killed nearly all the crew and then killed or expelled all white settlers from their territory. On acres of property, there is Acres of Art. The fifth annual outdoor art festival returns tomorrow (July 12) to the Coast Collective’s sprawling property above Esquimalt Lagoon. Executive director Cindy Moyer said the show’s celebration of heritage, art and music is ripe for discovery. “It is really very much an experiential thing, when you put people in a beautiful location with beautiful works, with people that are interacting with ingredients (with) which they can create something magical and new,” she said. “It’s a spectrum and something interesting. It is a great way to spend a day.” The festival marries music from the Matheson Band with a marketplace of 15 local artists selling their wares, as well

working, where he finds he is happiest. “It is a nice day out and a time where I can sit outside and carve while I am there. It is a way to introduce other people to carving – it is a hobby,” he said. “I am also interested in trying to promote it to get more younger people to take up the hobby. It is a great relaxation and great art form.” Palser’s passion for the event goes beyond just selling his wares. He invites anyone, even those not interested in purchasing art, to enjoy the venue for the same reason he enjoys being there: to be inspired. “There is a lot of talented painters and craftspeople there and (it’s) a good avenue to find art,” he said. “You don’t have to specifically buy art, but for anyone interested in just looking at it, there is a lot of good stuff there.” Acres of Art runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the Coast Collective, 3221 Heatherbell Rd. in Colwood. The key creative aspect is the paint-out on Esquimalt Lagoon, where anyone can pull up an easel, explore the scenic backdrop with a paintbrush and enter their work in a contest to be judged that afternoon. Nothing, not even the weather, can dampen the community spirit Moyer experiences at the event from year to year. “It is really the only community art centre of its kind on Southern Vancouver Island. It is a magical location.” Visitors who may not know the site exists are invited to learn about the gallery and gift shop, Moyer said. “It is a gem of a location and when newcomers come to visit they are generally taken aback with the beauty, tranquility and the experience they enjoy when they start to discover our artists.” Metchosin resident Roger Palser’s 70 years of experience with wood have earned him an opportunity as one of those artists. He hopes his carvings and handmade harps draw more people into the world of wood-

With the month-long Art on the Wall series taking over the interior of the building and the first-ever Metchosin Art Festival taking over the exterior, the former residence turned community centre will soon be overflowing with artisans when the two events overlap this Sunday. “This is a chance for the public to meet the artists and for the artist to show what they do

and see it being done live … and ask questions,” said organizer Art Brendon. He compared the events, known collectively as Visions of Metchosin, to a condensed version of the TD Art Gallery Paintin, but set to a rural backdrop. The unjuried show illustrates that there is more undiscovered talent in the area than meets the eye, Brendon said. “(We thought) the public would be interested in seeing how the region is depicted other than through photographs,” he said. “They are unique and really well done. Seeing the area through an art-

ist’s eyes is a different experience than seeing it on TV or video.” The rainbow of artwork ranges from paintings and children’s art to photography from both professional and hobby artists, without what Brendon called the boundaries of a curated show. There were no rules other than to show Metchosin, and no judging was done, to give artists greater freedom and break out from the model of art as competition. “I think that makes it interesting and curious. It wasn’t intended to be homogenized into environment or people, it is just about the

place and what the artists will find interesting (about Metchosin),” he said. “I hope the public finds that interesting as well.” The art festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with 13 artist demonstrators showing off their skills in a multitude of mediums, including stained-glass jewelry, printmaking, watercolour, oil painting and photography. “Metchosin is such a neat place … it is such a unique place. The (environment) is so beautiful,” said Metchosin-based artist Jan Poulin. “A lot of people are very (good) artists and this is something (where the community)

can see what artists do and appreciate the talents in the community.” She’ll be on hand to demonstrate her years of experience in using gathered beach glass to make colourful patterned art. “People do so many amazing things out here, it’s incredible. The art festival is going to give a good representation of different things others can (also) do if they feel like it,” Poulin said. “It’s all fun to see what they do and how they do it. Trades can offer a rewarding and fulfilling career path with a higher than average wage level and a solid future. The trades sector in B.C. is expected to face an overall labour shortage by 2016 that will deepen in the following years, according to WorkBC Trades Occupations Outlook (2010-2020) report (workbc.ca). A goal of this video competition is to encourage more B.C. students to simply consider a trade as a rewarding

career alternative and entice more teachers and high schools to include trades as a career option in the classroom. In the auto service industry, the highly regarded Ford ASSET technician training program is a good example. Locally, apprentices spend four months at BCIT and four months in a B.C. Ford dealership (mainly in the service sector) on a rotational basis. They can also choose to specialize in a specific area, such as auto electronics, and get additional upgrade certification courses through Ford training. Most apprentice programs are four years and on-the-job training is ongoing, especially in the auto industry. Changes in new technology are rapidly transforming trades, as well as other occupations. Looking even further ahead, our growing and evolving job market will require skilled, capable people who can adapt to new challenges and new technologies. Discover Skills BC is an initiative, funded by the B.C. government, to help provide easy access for secondary students to opportunities in trades and technology training. A hands-on ability, whatever the skill, is a talent that tends to go unrecognized and too often, it is under-appreciated, even by those who possess the talent. That’s why I was delighted to be asked again to participate as a judge (one of five) in the annual “Show Us Your Skills” competition organized by Discover Skills BC for high school students. Students create a short video about a trade or skill that they are interested in pursuing. Prizes for the top three videos are presented to both the student and the high school that they attend. The high level of expertise that some of these kids already possess was remarkable and the video entries this year were outstanding. First prize this year went to Connor Shaw, a student at Traditional Learning Academy in Nanaimo. He was taught to weld by his uncle and at age twelve he fabricated a flat deck for a truck he was given. More recently he added a hydraulic lift system that gives the flat deck a dump feature. Shaw loves welding and plans to pursue a career in a related trade. Shaw will get an Apple MacBook Air and his high school will receive $2,000. The second prize winner was Albert Leung, of Richmond, who an iPad Air 16GB and $1,000 for his school.

When it comes to water safety, summer is the most dangerous time of the year. More than 500 Canadians drown every year, many of them children and teenage males. Bruce Andrew, Victoria-based manager of community development for the Canadian Red Cross, said that number is high, especially when many of the fatalities are preventable. “Children can drown in inches of water. That is one of the dangers they don’t understand that can happen,” he said. “It only takes one mistake and it could be your last mistake. People aren’t taking the risk around water seriously enough.” A recent report by the Canadian Red Cross documenting 20 years of data between 1991 and 2010 showed 20 per cent of drowning fatalities are children between age one and four unexpectedly falling around water. With children, Andrew said, the key to water

can take that ability away. “In cold water, it doesn’t matter how good a swimmer you are, hypothermia sets in in four to five minutes and you don’t have the ability to swim. The water can be a dangerous place,” he said. “It is a fine line. Water is such a unique environment. You can have so much fun in water and you don’t want to discourage (the public) from using that, but they need to understand when they need to be safe and understand the dangers there.” He encourages people to go out on the water and enjoy themselves. At the same time, he advises to be especially careful of fun and sun masking potentially dangerous situations. Those can include accidental slips or falls, an issue exacerbated by water making surfaces more slippery than normal. “There are so many preventable drownings,” he said. “You have to treat the water with respect, because it can be a dangerous situation.”

I actually had some success at cleaning the house before I was diverted into preparing royal snacks, de-fleaing the royal hound and mopping up a royal food mess. Toys and games aside, I loved watching the pure and sweet imagination that went into child play. Most often, the girls would flitter in and about me as I washed dishes and prepared endless snacks, and caught only sparks of conversation. But once in awhile, I’d hear them chattering in the back seat of the car, like the time I picked up one of Sierra’s friends for a playtime. They immediately launched into their latest game. “Let’s pretend we’re princesses with horses.” / “A black horse and a white horse.” / “All the horses in the world.” / “And a unicorn.” / “All the unicorns in the world!” / “And we didn’t have any parents.” / “Just sisters.” / “All the sisters in the world!” Later, as I watched the two create a wonderland of very deliberately placed books and blankets and dolls, I suggested that perhaps I should play with the Barbies while they put away the groceries. The young visitor fixed me with a stern look. “We are the children. You are the adult,” she said. “We get to play and you have to clean the house.”

Inspiring children and teens to do something more to preserve the environment and act on their outdoor passion is what FUN camps are all about. FUN, a well-crafted acronym for Friends Uniting for Nature, has been offering environmental summer day camps for young people aged six to 16 since 2008 in Victoria and Vancouver. The success of the non-profit society’s camps led them this year to expand to the West Shore, on a Colwood site that has a rich history of connecting kids with the outdoors. Coast Collective on Heatherbell Road, now a central part of the arts community on the West Shore, has partnered with FUN to offer a pristine location where campers can learn about their surroundings and experience activities

that have little to do with electronics. “We’re definitely not your average summer camp at all,” says Maia Green, executive director and founder of the Friends Uniting for Nature Society. “Kids are inspired to take action. The camp is focused on environmental leadership.” Summer camps ran at the Havenwood estate, anchored by the historic Pendray House which now houses the Coast Collective’s gallery and programs, between 1977 and 2001. Shannon Carmen, a Metchosin resident who now works with Coast Collective, remembers fondly the summer days she spent at the former Pacific Centre for Family Services day camp between 1994 and 2000. “We learned to sail and canoe on Esquimalt Lagoon,” she says. “You were doing archery and tree climbing – that was something you did for an hour.” Being around the area she played in as a child and teen allows her to relive a part of those experiences every day.

“When I think of it, and working at Coast Collective now, there was something that was so magical about that place.” Carmen, now 32, likes the idea that children are now back and learning valuable lessons while playing. “We weren’t talking about saving the environment, we just absorbed it by osmosis,” she says. As part of the summer programs, which see all ages engage in activities together, campers are encouraged to follow their heart and create their own “passion project.” “It gets them thinking about what do they really love and what would they like to do to make the world better,” Green says. Past projects have ranged from a boy designing a book sharing program for his school to a girl creating a fundraiser project for wolf conservation. One Grade 5 student at Crystal View elementary in Langford planned out and started an Eco Club at her school. “Right away they had over

30 kids coming to every meeting,” Green says. “They did art projects on their favourite animals, made bird feeders, used outdoors as a learning place. The nice part is the school has committed to keep it going.” At a summer’s end gala, campers particularly excited about their projects can pitch them to a panel of judges, with the potential to win a FUN Champs Social Change Award. Winners receive seed money to follow up on their dream and are assigned a mentor for a year. Last year, 10 Champs were funded in each of Victoria and Vancouver. FUN also prides itself on the fact its day camps are accessible to low-income, disadvantaged and at-risk children and youth through their scholarship program, which enables one third of all campers to attend free of charge.
