INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL FOR PARKSVILLE
Starting the conversation Privately-operated school could take over Parksville Elementary CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
An effort to bring an international school program to Parksville is gaining momentum. Representatives from the International Sustainability Education Foundation — one of two Vancouver-based private companies leading the project — spent last week in Parksville meeting with School District 69 officials, including superintendent Rollie Koop. The other private partner is Wetegrity Investment Group, which has provided $100,000 in start-up funding and has earmarked $1.5 million to come. SD 69 will contribute a site lease and staff time. According to a news release issued by the school district, what has been deemed “The Parksville International Academy” will offer shortduration, English-language programs for school-age students and academic English-language programs for adults. Additionally, partners are looking to start a cross-country program seeing international students travel between Canadian universities in an effort to promote Canadian post-secondary schools. Help for hospice JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Miriam Sivan Bar says she was lost six months ago when her son died. The Bowser resident said the services of the Oceanside Hospice Society got her through a difficult time. “I was lost, discouraged, disconnected and lonely and I was stumbling in the dark,” Sivan Bar said during a news conference Thursday announcing a $40,000 grant to the society from the provincial government. “The moment I entered the hospice (Valhalla House in Qualicum Beach), I was welcomed with warm hearts. It was really a lifesaver for me, solid ground to hold on to during a very difficult time in my life.” See PALLIATIVE CARE, page A9
