‘Fish scammer’ resurfaces, with baby in tow MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter
A smooth talking door-to-door con artist dubbed the ‘fish scammer’ in 2006 in Langley has been arrested again, this time he has a woman and a baby with him. Last week Mission Mounties arrested a couple who were using a baby to help them steal from elderly victims across the Fraser Valley, including in Langley. The 47-year-old man and 21-yearold woman, both of Abbotsford, are suspects in a series of distraction thefts targeting elderly victims over the last year, said RCMP. The pair are well known to police. Donald Quinnell has since been charged with theft under $5,000. In 2006, he became well known in Langley as the fish scammer, who went door-to-door pre-selling fish, gaining entry to people’s homes and stealing wallets and purses. He was sentenced to 11 months in jail for the scams across Metro Vancouver. At his sentencing, it was learned
that he was a realtor for seven years before his life of crime began. In the most recent scam, at least eight Langley residents were victims of distraction theft, confirm Langley RCMP. Locally, the suspects targeted elderly women out grocery shopping. The suspects follow the potential victim home and then approach the victim, carrying their baby and either asking for water for an overheated car or for water to heat a baby bottle, said Langley RCMP. While the victim goes to get the water, the suspects make off with whatever they can grab at the door, usually wallets or purses. Police say the pair preyed on people’s good nature. On Wednesday, June 11, Mission RCMP received a call from a resident who said his 72-year-old mother had been approached at their home by a man and woman with a baby. The couple stated they needed water for their vehicle which had broken down. Continued Page 11
