Teachers vote in favour of strike Full-scale walkout won’t happen until next week at the earliest by Jeff Nagel NEXT WEEK may mark the end of

the school year for Surrey and Delta students, after B.C. teachers voted this week in favour of a full walkout. The move by the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF) was to put maximum pressure on the provincial government, but the union did not immediately issue the required 72-hour strike notice. As of The Leader’s press deadline Wednesday afternoon, notice had still not been given (check surreyleader. com for the latest updates). With no strike notice issued as of Wednesday it appeared the start of the strike could shift to Tuesday or later. Jim Iker Ongoing rotating strikes were scheduled to close Delta schools today and Surrey schools tomorrow (Friday). The result of the BCTF vote, conducted Monday and Tuesday, was 86 per cent in favour – or 28,809 out of 33,387 ballots cast. See BCTF / Page 8

Hundreds of police officers marched in Surrey at RCMP E Division headquarters shortly after noon Tuesday to honour three RCMP officers killed in the line of duty in Moncton, New Brunswick last week. Const. Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, Const. Douglas James Larche and Const. Dave Joseph Ross were shot by a lone gunman on June 4. Wreaths – one for each of the three officers killed – were laid at the foot of the Peace Officer Memorial at the Green Timbers police building.

Kwantlen to open campus in City Centre

1,600 student spaces will be available when new site opens in 2016 by Sheila Reynolds KWANTLEN POLYTECHNIC University

(KPU) is ready to grow – and it’s set to do just that in the heart of Surrey’s downtown core. The university, which already has two campuses in Surrey – in Newton and Cloverdale – as well as two others in Richmond and Langley, is planning to expand further into a three-storey site at 3 Civic Plaza in Surrey City Centre. It is expected to open in 2016. The announcement was made Wednes-

day afternoon at nearby Surrey City Hall. Dr. Alan Davis, president and vice-chancellor of Kwantlen, said the university was first established to provide “relevant” post-secondary education to the South Fraser region, and continues to do so. “For the past 32 years, we have grown to serve more than a quarter of a million students. But KPU’s vision is to be bigger, bolder and better,” said Davis. “KPU Civic Plaza is just that.”
