Retire Happy Good research leads to good decisions When Lorna Keith stepped down as president of the Valley Concert Society, it wasn’t because she thought that at 85 years old she could no longer do the work, but rather she wanted to make room for new ideas. “I had been chair for over 17 years, and I felt that it was time for someone to step in,” said Keith. “I thought maybe there would be a different approach, or a different point of view, and it’s good to get new ideas when you’re working on something.” The Valley Concert Society is a nonprofit organization that has brought quality music to the community since 1983, and continues to attract musicians from around the world to perform at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. For nearly two decades, Keith oversaw the concert selection committee,

managed costs, and recruited sponsorships for promotion and advertising from as far as Chilliwack, Mission and Langley. Keith admits that she loved the challenge of getting sponsors to support them. “We had some tight seasons where we weren’t sure if we would make the bills,” she said, “but we always managed.” Keith strived to ensure that people had access to quality music in their area, and is proud to see the ongoing success of the Valley Concert Society. “I think that fine music enhances life, and having concerts available, instead of people feeling like they have to drive to Vancouver, is important,” said Keith. “Also, it’s important for young people to be exposed to fine music as it’s an intellectual experience for them.”
For Keith, the sound of music continues to bring her joy, as do her other activities. She currently sings in a church choir and community choir, is involved with the Fraser Valley Stage, volunteers at the Reach Galley Museum, and spends her spare time gardening. “I like to keep busy and try new experiences. You meet so many different people, and that’s part of the fun of it.” Keith’s leadership within the community, her compassionate nature and commitment to her church, family and profession led to her nomination for the 2006 Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year Award. In 2012, she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, presented to Canadian citizens that have provided significant contributions or achievements to their communities.
When asked what age means to her, Keith laughed and said, “Well, I haven’t given my age much thought because I’m too busy enjoying life.”
