SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908
Seniors targeted Retromania by ‘stranded motorist’ scam Two Mission residents fall victim Jason ROESSLE ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Mission’s Edith Veltin came home late last week after running some errands and noticed a car parked in front of her home. The vehicle’s hood was up, and the driver said his car’s radiator had overheated and needed some water. Veltin obliged and filled up a couple of jugs of water for the “stranded” motorist. In that short time span, the man stole Veltin’s purse, somehow deciphered her PIN number and made two $400 withdrawls. Earlier in the day, another Mission senior was also targeted by the same scam. The woman lives on Best Avenue, but requested anonymit. She said a couple and a child were parked in her lower driveway, claiming their radiator was dry and they needed water. She pointed them to the hose at the side of the house, but the man said he needed warm water. The senior, sympathizing with these people with a young child, went into her kitchen to fill some containers. Similar to the other incident, while the homeowner
was busy, the suspect stole the woman’s purse. These crimes are similar to ones reported late last year in Mission, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Mission RCMP are aware of the situation, and said all incidents have occurred in residential neighbourhoods, and the victims are typically approached when they are returning home. The suspect claims car trouble, needing water for the radiator. The suspect often offers to help the victim carry groceries or other items and waits at the entrance of the residence while the target gets the requested water. Different descriptions have been provided for the suspect vehicle involved in each theft. Police caution people to be vigilant for suspicious activity and unfamiliar people hanging around their neighbourhood. Police also remind the public not to allow strangers into their homes and to keep their doors locked at all times. Anyone with information should call 604-826-7161. If you wish to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.
Retromania at the Clarke Theatre Friday night drew nearly a full house. A number of tribute bands covered music from Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart and ABBA. The final performance of the evening was by ABBA tribute band Arrival. The Scandinavian ensemble was led by Wendy Gorrie and Tracy Masson. The group played a wide selection of ABBA hits, and surprised the audience with a medley of other classic rock tunes ending with ACDC’s You Shook Me All Night Long. BOB FRIESEN PHOTO
