The BC River Forecast Centre as of last Monday was maintaining a High Streamflow Advisory for the North Thompson River, and a Flood Watch for the Clearwater River.

A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

A Flood Watch means that river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bank-

full. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.

The Centre advised the North Thompson River gauge at McLure showed it was flowing at 2192 m3/s (between a 5-year and 10-year flow), stage is 4.65 m and had risen approximately 36 cm over the past 24 hours.

Forecast flows were expected to continue to rise through Monday due to high flows in the Clearwater and Blue rivers.

Forecast modelling indicated flows on the North Thompson may have subsided by

late Monday or Tuesday, but would require close monitoring over the following 24-36 hours due to weather conditions.

The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor conditions and provides updates as conditions warrant. For udates go to: http://bcrfc.env. gov.bc.ca/ Area residents who may experience high water, or flooding around their properties can obtain sand bags by contacting District of Barriere Fire Chief Al Kirkwood at 250-819-2017.

Kamloops – Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, recently announced investments under the second round of the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program.

“Our Government is committed to supporting the individuals and organizations who are working along the shores of lakes, rivers and streams across this country to protect and restore fishing habitats for future generations,” said McLeod. “Recreational fishing is an important economic activity which attracts thousands of visitors to Canada and contributes billions of dollars to our economy every year. The projects funded by the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program will benefit Canadian communities for years to come.”

The Government of Canada will provide the British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association Farmland Riparian Interface Stewardship Program (FRISP) up to $75,000 to implement recreational fisheries habitat restoration.

“While this new money for FRISP benefits ranching operations, it is also enhances fish habitat. The development of this exciting new partnership with Recreational Fisheries Conservation recognizes the role of the ranching industry as stewards of these watersheds,” said David Haywood-Farmer, President of the BC Cattlemen’s Association.

Further the British Columbia Conservation Foundation will receive $46,637 to improve access to upstream spawning habitats for salmon in the Tranquille River.

“In the recent past spawning salmon have not been able to get up Tranquille creek due to Tranquille River flows being spread out into small rivlets across a large sandbar that forms at the mouth of the river. It is hoped that the several flow diversion structures will force the flows into one main channel. With all the flow in one channel we expect returning salmon to once again spawn in Tranquille River,” said Sandy MacDonald of the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association.

The Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program was announced in Economic Action Plan 2013 to support fisheries habitat restoration projects led by recreational fishing and angling groups, as well as conservation organizations. Given its early success and high demand, Economic Action Plan 2014 increased the funding available through the program by $15 million, for a total investment of $25 million.

Under the first round of the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program, up to $1,813,000 million had been made available for 28 projects in British Columbia. Up to $5.5 million for 128 projects to restore recreational fisheries habitat through Round II have been approved nationally.

Local man loses life in highway accident North Thompson Star/Journal Barriere RCMP responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 5 about 10 kilometres south of Barriere at about 8 a.m. the morning of Saturday, May 24, 2014. Police report a motorcycle was southbound and attempted to pass a tractor trailer on the two lane highway, but the motorcycle collided with a northbound vehicle.

The motorcycle rider, Kurtis James Genier, aged 34, of Barriere was pronounced deceased at the scene. The occupants of the northbound vehicle were taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

As a result of the accident, the highway was closed in both directions while the Coroner’s Service investigated. The highway was reopened at approximately 2 p.m. in the afternoon.

RCMP Constable Michelle Hall commented that the motorcycle driver had a learners license. She noted that people with a motorcycle learner’s license are not allowed to drive unescorted, and are not allowed to exceed speeds of 60 km/hour.

Police are asking for the driver of the southbound tractor trailer to contact them. The tractor trailer was not struck by the motorcycle, and is only being sought as a witness to the accident.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Services continue to investigate this unfortunate death.

No legislation planned for B.C. teacher strike this week

By Tom Fletcher Black Press VICTORIA – The B.C. government is not planning to legislate a settlement to the latest teacher strike, which is shutting down schools in each district for a day this week.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said Monday the government is looking for movement from the B.C. Teachers’ Federation on its wage and benefit demands, but isn’t going to impose another contract extension on the union.

The legislature is scheduled to adjourn for the summer on Thursday.

“To rush to legislation is not where we’re going to go,” Fassbender said.

“We want the BCTF to come to the table with a wage response that is reasonable and within the zone of other public sector unions. We expect them to come with something that is af-

After lockout provisions were announced last week to mirror union work hour restrictions that started in April, BCTF president Jim Iker said that would disrupt graduation ceremonies, and sports, drama and clubs would be cancelled.

The B.C. Public School Employers’ As-

sociation issued a letter to the BCTF Sunday saying Iker’s statements are incorrect, and there are no school district restrictions on extracurricular or volunteer activities.

“If teachers withdraw from participation in extracurricular or volunteer activities, they do so at the encouragement of the union and by their own choice,” the letter states.

Fassbender also rejected the union’s claim that teachers doing volunteer work are not covered for work-related injury.

“Any teacher that is at any activity that is sanctioned by a school district is absolutely covered by WorkSafeBC,” Fassbender said. “There is no question of that, and that misinformation should be corrected.”

Poor reflections upon society News that six dogs, reported stolen from a popular Langley dog walking spot, actually died of heat stroke while in the back of a dog walker’s pickup, was a shocking one.

The poor creatures died due to neglect, with their bodies dumped in a ditch on Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford.

The cause of death is yet to be confirmed through necropsies, but according to the operator of a pet search service called in to try to find the “missing dogs,” the woman finally confessed she had left the animals in the back of her truck, and returned to find them dead.

Several of the dogs belonged to friends, and she panicked. Instead of telling the owners what really happened, she concocted a story that made it appear as though the dogs had been stolen, or at least, were intentionally released from the truck by someone.

One person’s deliberate lie led to many people wasting much of their time in searching for the dogs. As well, a fundraising campaign raised thousands of dollars in what turned out to be a pointless effort to help.

In the meantime, the families who lost their pets were put through a week of what must have been acutely painful, and entirely unnecessary uncertainty.

Their grieving could have been that of closure last week, not lingering doubt.

If the current story is the accurate one, it’s a sad reflection on how prevalent lying has become. Everybody apparently does it – from politicians on down. It has been elevated to a fine art by sports figures, entertainers and other prominent people.

It’s not a ringing endorsement of our society.

Neither, however, is the seemingly growing phenomemon of utterly vicious online and social media commenting. This story has attracted such ugliness, including death wishes.

Faceless digital communication seems to have stripped the humanity away from many people, who pass kangaroo court judgment on others, and target them with a level of vitriol that would very likely not be expressed on a person to person basis.

Clearly, such people have little capacity as to imagine what it would be like to be the target of such cruel stones, instead of casting them with self-righteous abandon.

Mayor thanked for “a great job” To the editor; We would like to publicly thank our mayor, Bill Humphreys, for his unswerving help in finding a safe haven and proper care for an elderly tenant who was no longer able to look after his basic needs.

We had tried for three years to get help for this man without success. In desperation we called Mayor Humphreys, he got right into the problem and had it solved in less than one week.

His invaluable help in the past couple of weeks dealing with the environment officers, police officers, and fire fighters who were needed to deal with a trespasser(s) who was destroying the river habitat, starting uncontrolled burns, and ignoring our requests to cease and desist is also much appreciated.

Once again, thanks Mr. Mayor for doing a great job.

B.C. Teachers Federation out of touch with reality To the editor; As of today, the governments in the provinces of B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island, are working on contract negotiations with the teachers.

No signed contracts in force presently.

Teacher contracts is a hard sell in all 10 provinces.

Alberta’s present contract ending in 2015, is a four year contract, with three years of frozen wages, and a 2% raise and a cash bonus in the fourth year.

Saskatchewan’s last contract ending in 2013, was a four year contract with a 5.5% wage increase.

Manitoba’s last contract ending in 2013, was a four year contract with a 7.5% wage increase.

Ontario’s present contract ending in 2014, is a two year contract with frozen wages.

Quebec’s present contract ending in 2015, is a five year contract, with a 5.6% wage increase.

Nova Scotia’s present contract ending in 2015, is a three year contract with a 5.5% wage increase.

Newfoundland’s last contract ending in 2012, was a four year contract with a wage increase of 5%.

Prince Edward Island’s last contract ending in 2013, was a two year contract with frozen wages.

New Brunswick’s present contract ending in 2016, is a four year contract with a wage increase of 4%.

Here in B.C., the government is offering the teachers a 10 year contract, with a 7.25% wage increase over the first six years, with further open wage negotiations, in written form, after six years on the remaining four years.

Not good enough for B.C. teachers. They want a wage increase of 13.5% over a three year contract.

Not good enough for the B.C. taxpayer.

The average B.C. teacher wage is $89,624 per year. ($70,624 in wages and $18,000 in taxpayer funded benefits) The B.C. taxpayer also contributes 16.13% of teacher wages to the B.C. teachers pension fund.

All in all, a very generous salary and benefit package when teachers only have to work 188 days per year in relation to other taxpayers in the non teaching profession that have to work 238 days per year.

Completely outrageous wage demands in comparison to what teachers have negotiated in the other nine provinces.

Perspective on immunizations To the editor; I would like to present some perspective to the immunization debate so that people who wonder what they should do do not make a mistake that costs children their lives.

Most recently the news has been of measles. Measles is a terrible disease that kills approximately 700,000 people, mostly children, every year in this world.

In the 1990 measles outbreak in the United States approximately 27,000 people got the measles and the mortality rate was 0.3 per cent.

That’s 81 people that died of the measles that year in the U.S. When the immunization rate drops it doesn’t just affect those who choose not to be immunized.

Measles outbreaks occur in under-immunized populations as we have seen in Alberta and the Fraser Valley.

This puts all chil-

dren six to 12 months of age at risk.

This is a vulnerable period because immunity from the mother wains at this time and the standard immunization protocol does not give the measles vaccine until 12 months of age.

For that reason Alberta Health, as of May 2, has issued a travel advisory for B.C. residents travelling to Edmonton, Calgary and central Alberta. If travelling with a child six to 12 months of age, the child should receive the measles vaccine.

Clearwater murder is part of a bigger pattern

Governor General’s Award goes to Brennan Creek student Hannah Allen of Brennan Creek was awarded the 2013 Governor General’s Award at the Barriere Secondary (BSS) Graduation Commencement Ceremonies in Barriere on May 23. Allen graduated from BSS last year and is currently attending Thompson Rivers University.

One of the most dangerous times for women in violent relationships is when they leave, said Michele Walker of the Kamloops Y Women’s Shelter.

The director of its violence against women intervention and support services spoke following the murder of a mother of three by her estranged partner in Clearwater.

Angila Wilson was killed on Monday, April 21. Her estranged common-law husband was arrested and charged with her murder.

“The perpetrator has no control anymore and the violence can escalate as he tries to regain control,” Walker said.

“There is risk when she is in the relationship, but it ramps up when she leaves.”

Walker said the past three months have been “incredibly busy” for staff at the shelter.

She said the shelter is always at capacity, noting if a woman or family moves out, those spaces are filled within 48 hours.

About 300 women access outreach services every year, she said, and another 400 to 500 women per year will call the shelter to ask for help or referrals to other services.

Walker said staff are seeing increased complexities in cases they deal with — more women facing barriers to income or legal assistance, for example, or trying to navigate the government bureaucracy to access services.

“She’s already stressed,” Walker said of the typical woman with whom the shelter deals.

“It is very daunting to face any of these systems, even as someone who knows how to navigate them. Imagine being afraid and alone and trying to do it.”

Walker said staff are also seeing situations with more violence, mental-health and substance-abuse issues than before.

And, she said, the “system” is even harder to get through if the woman is aboriginal, an immigrant or a refugee.

Children who witness violence in the home “carry that violence with them,” Walker said, but whether it leaves them scarred depends on the supports they can access through adulthood.

Walker criticized language used by the media when covering domestic violence when referring to a “killing” rather than a “murder” and when referring to a “domestic dispute” rather than a “violent relationship.”

“The language we use minimizes their experiences,” she said.

Walker said society often criticizes women who don’t leave violent relationships, asking why they didn’t call police, contact support services or flee the house.

She said most women learn how to navigate the violence in the home, recognizing the triggers that will cause the violence and knowing what to expect.

“That’s why we tell women – and the community – this is not their fault. He is the one who chose violence,” Walker said. “When society blames women, we ask ‘Why wasn’t he stopped? What was done to stop him?’”

has updated the Province’s recycling regulation to ensure small producers of packaging and printed paper are exempt.

This means the vast majority of businesses and organizations that put packaging and printed paper into the residential waste stream are exempt from any reporting or recycling costs associated with the program.

An exemption is granted if any one of the following four criteria is met: * Under one million dollars in annual revenues. * Under one tonne of packaging and printed paper supplied to B.C. residents. * Operate as a single point of retail sale and are not supplied

by or operated as part of franchise, a chain or under a banner. * Is a registered charity.

As well, where a typical franchise has locations in B.C., the reporting and financial responsibilities for recycling paper and packaging, which end up in residential blue boxes, lie with the parent corporation, not with the individual franchise owners.

Less than 3,000 businesses in B.C. are affected by this program. This is less than one per cent of the total number of business in the province.

The Province also has successfully urged Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC), the industry-led stewardship

organization responsible for the new recycling program, to give small to mediumsized businesses the option of an annual flat fee if the business is a low-volume producer of packaging and printed paper.

Businesses producing between one and five tonnes can pay a predetermined recycling fee, saving the administrative burden of detailed reporting.

These initiatives respond to requests from B.C.’s businesses for creative solutions to meet the intent of the regulation, while avoiding inadvertent costs or administration.

Gas Tax funding allotted North Thompson Star/Journal Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops - Thompson - Cariboo provided details of the newly announced Gas Tax Fund, that will support local infrastructure priorities in nine communities within her riding, including the District of Barriere.

“The agreement for the renewed federal Gas Tax Fund will provide predictable, stable funding for public infrastructure throughout nine

municipalities and districts of Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo,” said McLeod. “The funding will provide local governments with the flexibility to choose and plan infrastructure projects based on their specific priorities. The agreements will govern the flow of federal funds over the next ten years, from 2014-2015 to 2023-24.”

The New Building Canada Plan will provide $53 billion in funding to communities across the country over the next decade.

For British Columbia, this

represents almost $3.9 billion in dedicated federal funding, including almost $1.1 billion under the New Building Canada Fund, with approximately $109 million allocated for projects located in communities of fewer than 100,000 residents through the Small Communities Fund, and an estimated $2.76 billion under the federal Gas Tax Fund.

TNRD approves annual grants for Search and Rescue The ThompsonNicola Regional District Board of Directors’ meeting held May 22, produced the following decisions: The Kamloops, Logan Lake, NicolaValley, Barriere, and Wells Gray Search and Rescue Teams will each receive a $10,000 annual operating grant. The South Cariboo Search and Rescue Team was approved to receive a $3,325 annual operating grant. In addition, the following equipment and training grants were approved: • Kamloops SAR — $24,456 • Wells Gray SAR — $20,046.53 • Logan Lake SAR — $1,688.27 • Barriere SAR — $1,612.33 Vicci Weller, the TNFC Film Commissioner, was approved to attend the Association of Film Commissioners International 2014 Cineposium in October in New York City. The Film Commissioner will market

to NYC based film and commercial production companies and ad agencies. The Film Commission will also be changing its URL addresses to create a better association between the websites and TNRD’s geographic location.

The contract for the construction of the new Clearwater Septage Receiving Station was awarded to Borrow Enterprises, Clearwater, for a maximum price of $830,886.53 plus taxes.

The Whitecroft Fire Protection Area

Establishment Bylaw No. 2471 was given three readings. At the request of residents, and with approval from the Electoral Area Director and confirmation from the Resort Municipality of Sun Peaks that its fire department is willing to provide fire suppression service to the community of Whitecroft, a formal petition process requesting establishment of a fire protection service in 2015 was conducted.

The petition process was successful and the bylaw was brought

forward to the Board.

Westway Plumbing and Heating was awarded the contract for the supply and installation of new boilers in the TNRD Civic Building. The contract is for a maximum price of $135,605 plus taxes.

The Board approved $1,000 from the discretionary funds allocated for Electoral Area “E” to be granted to the Clinton Parade Committee.

Director Sternig will be attending the B.C. Rural Network Summit, scheduled for June 13 to 15 in Kaslo.

Behaviour of the North Thompson River as it peaks will help determine how many slaps are made to exposed legs, arms and necks this season.

“We’re hoping the river will peak in the next few days and next week we’ll be launching a massive campaign from Vavenby to Kamloops,” said BWP Consulting owner Cheryl Phippen, who conducts mosquito control for the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.

The river, which typically peaks in late May or early June, is days away from reaching its maximum volume and will then begin to decline, she predicted.

“The river is shooting straight up.”

The control program will be more effective if the river peaks only once, Phippen said.

BWP staff have already seeded snowmelt areas with a naturally occurring larvicide, including in Pinantan, Pritchard, Knutsford and Lac Le Jeune.

That program began on April 15.

“We finished up there,” Phippen said. “Now we’re waiting for the river to flood.”

Once rivers peak, particularly the North Thompson, the program uses larvicide on areas of standing water left behind that become breeding areas for mosquitoes.

A helicopter is used for the river-based program.

The larvicide must also be applied so it coincides with the correct stage of larval development.

BWP uses a larvicide contained within kernels of corn.

The product, Btk, is a naturally occurring bacteria.

It has no known affect on humans, plants, honeybees, birds

Phippen said an ideal peak for the North Thompson is over two to three days, followed by a steady decline.

Using the helicopter, the company broadcasts the material over one to two days in key areas.

“And we hope it’s not pouring rain,” Phippen said.

A one-centimetre rise in the North Thompson River corresponds with a one-hectare area of fields flooding with water.

The South Thompson River peaks later and its rise and fall is steady and predictable.

On April 13, 2013, 30-yearold Richard (Chuckie) Smith of Langley, B.C., survived a 150 foot plunge off a mountain while snowmobiling. He sustained a traumatic brain injury, and to date is still fighting for his life.

Richard, or Chuckie, as he is known by family and friends is no stranger to Barriere, and was the son of area resident Pat Smith who passed away last year. Mom, Gerry Smith, is currently on the lower mainland.

At this time Chuckie is in hospital at the coast with his wife Drea Tirshman by his side.

Drea, who is holding their family together right now, recently wrote on the ‘Support for Richard Chuckie Smith and his Family’ Facebook site, “Well, he seems pretty worn out right now. Tomorrow they were talking about removing this trach tube and putting in a more permanent one, one without a cuff on it. Another bedside “surgery” for us. He’s

getting some rest so he can fight them all again. Little scrapper....” She also writes about holding his hand,“...feel his finger and thumb moving, and to get the hand squeezes. ...I’m not sure how Chuck has survived all of this. But it’s a bitter reminder of how each day still here with him has been so precious. We still have the chance for him to recover and come back. It makes me want to try even harder, and push farther.”

This Saturday, May 31, to lend support to Chuckie and his family, a dance is being held as a fundraiser for them starting at 8 p.m. in the Barriere Legion.

Admission at the door is by donation, and music is by D & D Sounds DJ Service. There will be a guest sign in book available so those attending can write Chuckie a message. Everyone is welcome, but sorry, no minors.

As a result, over the past while, we have been exploring alternative solutions to these problems.

One such alternative solution is to use bio fuel to generate both power and heat.

At this point in time, it is unclear as to the best way to structure this solution as there are a number of choices.

One might be to have the required infrastructure created by a public/private partnership. This would require a number of grants from other orders of government.

Another would be that a private company would build and operate the facility.

No matter how this is structured once completed it will provide the missing pieces of the puzzle and make it possible to attract investors to our area.

I was honoured once again to be asked to attend the Barriere Secondary Graduation ceremonies.

The event was held at the Barriere Curling Rink and was very well attended.

There were over 30 graduates this year and they have already made their collective mark on the world.

the hassle of sending trucks into the Delta Port Terminal.

By loading the goods in Ashcroft it is estimated that at least 500,000 truck trips per year on our highways and through Delta will be avoided. By scheduling delivery of rail cars to the port there will be less wait time and fewer costs to the users of the terminals.

This equates to a greater return on investments and sustainability of the various manufacturing companies and industrial entities here in the Interior of B.C. In order to attract investors to Barriere, one of the problems that needed to be solved was the lack of a viable shipping plan for their goods.

The Ashcroft Terminal provides a possible solution to this problem.

Now we are able to provide known costs that can be used to calculate the viability of a future project wanting to locate here in our community.

We all know that there is limited power here in the North Thompson Valley and that it is not entirely reliable. My apologies to the hard working folks at BC Hydro, but that is the case.

Barriere also has no access to natural gas, which is another problem in itself when trying to attract investors.

Over the past few weeks in my role as chair of the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) I have been attending information meetings in a number of communities throughout the regional district.

One of these was the opening of the inland port in Ashcroft.

The Ashcroft Terminal is a private inland transloading, container storage and distribution centre and is a member of the Canadian Government’s Asian Pacific Corridor Initiative (APGCI). On Oct. 11, 2006, Prime Minister Harper announced the APGCI with an initial investment of $5-million in federal funding.

As a result of this investment opportunity, Ashcroft Terminal was able to realize their vision of an inland port.

The terminal contains 8.7 km of rail track serviced directly off of CPR and CN mainlines, and is serviced daily

by CPR. Facilities include a 350,000 sq. ft. covered warehouse, manufacturing capacity, container capacity, 600 railcar storage spots and 20 km of internal storage and marshaling tracks.

What this all means to Barriere is that within easy reach there is now a facility able to provide a method of shipping by rail and then by sea if needed, countless loads of goods without

Bennett said the magnetic survey may also help understand the seismic effects of natural gas activities.

Another application is searching for gravel deposits, which are used all over the province for road and other construction.

GeoscienceBC is the only public nonprofit geological research organization in Canada. Its exploratory work narrows the search area for mineral exploration companies.

Bennett credited its work for locating a new metal ore deposit at the Huckleberry Mine south of Houston, extending its expected operation to 2021.

Gas price hardship drives more to conserve: Poll

A new poll has found high gas prices are causing financial hardship for a majority of B.C. residents, many of whom say they’re driving less and trying alternatives like walking or transit more.

The Insights West online survey in partnership with Black Press found two-thirds of respondents across the province have felt financial hardship from the recent rise in gas prices.

Pump prices for regular gas climbed above $1.50 per litre in Metro Vancouver this week, up more than 20 per cent since early January.

More Interior B.C. residents cited hardship – 74 per cent – even though they don’t pay the extra 17-cent-a-litre gas tax charged by TransLink in Metro Vancouver.

Insights West vice-president Mario Canseco said $1.50 per litre appears to be a psychological level where more people seek ways to cut their fuel consumption.

“We’re seeing people saying it might be better to take the bus this afternoon, it might be better to walk or try to bike – essentially not to drive,” he said.

Fifty-five per cent of poll respondents across B.C. said they’re already driving less than usual, while 27 per cent said they’re walking more and 19 per cent said they’re taking public transit more. (Twenty-six per cent in the Lower Mainland said they’re taking transit more.)

While it’s helpful that gas prices tend to spike in spring and summer, when the weather is more conducive to walking or biking than December, Canseco believes that’s coincidence.

“They’re not doing it because it’s lovely outside, they’re doing it because they’re feeling the pain when they gas up.”

The poll also uncovered refueling habits of those surveyed.

It may not sound like a winning strategy, but a large number of respondents – 38 per cent – said they’ve refueled with less gas than usual lately, possibly in hopes of lower prices the next time.

Just over half said they buy at gas stations that give them loyalty reward points, while far fewer respondents said they use a station close to home or work (20 per cent), or they buy at any station when they run low (10 per cent.)

Sixteen per cent said they don’t own a car.

The poll also found widespread belief that gas taxes are too high, that B.C. stations charge more than ones elsewhere in Canada, and 91 per cent said they believe gas stations take advantage of motorists by raising prices just before a long weekend.

“There’s a high number of people who look at the service stations as gougers,” Canseco said.

Just four per cent said they’ve considered selling their vehicle and switching to a more fuel efficient one.

Canseco said he believes that will change over time as electric car prices come down.

The poll didn’t ask the more than 800 respondents if they regularly drive to the U.S. to refuel with cheaper gas.

But Canseco said a previous poll on crossborder shopping habits showed gas savings is one of the top reasons why Lower Mainland residents frequently head south.

Wow! Who would have expected that Tuesday, May 20, would be so beautiful after the rainy long weekend?

Well, I guess 34 ladies did, because that is how many showed up to golf. The warm weather continued into the evening and we all enjoyed good food and lively company on the patio.

Flight 1 winners were Tanya Desjarlais (low gross) and Deb Rainer (low net).

They received the prize money from our sponsor, Thompson Valley Awards. Flight 2 winners: Leslie Stirling (low gross) and Joan Streadwick (low net) won the Stamer Logging prize.

Lindsay Arcand won low gross for Flight 3. For those of you who aren’t golfers - low gross is good, not bad. Helen Fraser continued her marvelous putting streak and won the Interior Savings Credit Union prize by hitting only 15 putts.

‘Trekkers’ from Louis Creek joined 1933 protest Deplorable living conditions and pay for workers in ‘relief camps’ sparked action

By Carson Stone Through my research of the Louis Creek region, every now and again I come across an event in Canadian history that has been tied to this North Thompson community.

One such event is about a “camp” that was situated here in the Louis Creek canyon location.

During the “Great Depression” of the 1930’s, The B.C government set up “relief camps” to give married and single men an opportunity to have an income.

These camps were usually out in a wilderness setting and the men were put to work repairing roads, bush work, and other types of labor employment.

When the “camps” started (1931 and ending in 1936) the wage was $2.00 a day. When the Federal Government got involved under Prime Minister R.B. Bennett, the wages were reduced to $7.50 a month. In 1933, the Department of National Defense took over and further reduced the pay to $.20 cents per day, eight hour shifts, forty-four hour work week.

The camps were deplorable for the workers, their living accomodations, food, and state of well being became a nightmare for them all. Protests began to happen as a result.

Many of these

workers banded together and decided that things had to change.

Under the leadership of approximately 12 individuals, they began to rally the workers in these camps.

There were many public protests to get attention to their needs, and for the most part, the population of B.C. gave them as much support as they could.

To carry their message to the governments, the workers started a union, the RCWU (Relief Camp Workers Union) while being led by a left wing trade union run by communists. This union was achieved in Kamloops in July of 1933.

With the workers commitment to change things in these camps, a plan was set forth to travel to Ottawa by train to meet with the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Bennett, however, had other plans.

On June 3, 1933, the “Trekkers” as they became known, started their travel by train to Ottawa while being perched on top of the train box-cars.

Two of these trains left from Vancouver.

The train then stopped in Kamloops, where still more boarded the train. It is believed that the total of these “Trekkers” was 1,600.

The trains stopped in Regina, Saskatchewan, but that would

be as far as they got.

The Prime Minister placed the city under siege by the police and other enforcement departments.

While holding a massive support rally, the relief camp workers and the enforcement troops collided and an historical riot ensued.

There is much more to this story, and if anyone would like to read further on it, “google” the words “relief camp”.

It has been established that there was a relief camp here in Louis Creek, and the location has been researched.

To be positive of this, a historical atlas has this confirmed, as well as a “passage” from the B.C. Government Legislature in 1936, to which “Louis Creek” is mentioned of the relief camps.

The members of this camp worked on the “old” road through here, and the total “person days worked” were 17,543. The camp had been here for awhile it seems.

Nature plays a large part in Art by Ecki

By Elli Kohnert North Thompson Star/Journal The small settlement of Vavenby is home to Ecki Manthei, a gifted artist who‘s artwork grows out of his connection to nature, and his drive to follow every new idea with a passion that moves him to create what is in his imagination, without delay.

Ecki’s home stands out from all others in the Vavenby trailer park where it cannot be missed. Two large life-like eagles formed from wood, seem to be guarding his property. Varieties of creatures also made from wood, line the path to the house; and the ambiance of this place leaves no doubt that an artist lives here.

Ecki, and his life partner, Marilyn, arrived in the North Thompson Valley about five years ago. When they saw the trailer court in Vavenby, they “liked it right away and bought it”; a comfortable, quiet place that allows his creativity to flourish.

Ecki says he emigrated with his parents from Austria when he was a very young boy in 1945. He has lived and worked in various northern locations in

Canada, and eventually came to live in Cloverdale, B.C. It is there that he began his artistic career.

Seashells were his medium then, tells Ecki as he explains how they lend themselves to be made into clocks for instance, or be used as a canvas for his paintings.

When the couple eventually settled in the community of Vavenby, it is here that Ecki took on art as his life work.

Ecki has transformed one room of their home into an art gallery, where he now displays the numerous ‘Art By Ecki’ creations.

The variety of his work is remarkable; it ranges from usable art, like wooden spoons and clocks, to wildlife and nature paintings.

Ecki uses antlers for many of his carvings that depict wildlife, especially wolves, in their habitat.

“When I am walking in the forest, or along a stream, I often see something that gives me an idea for a project,” says the artist, “I may pick up a rock that would be just right to paint something on, or maybe I am lucky to find a moose or deer antler, and I know right away what I want to

carve on it!”

He notes that nearly all the materials he uses in his creations are natural; giving the artwork its special character.

Sometimes a person may come into the gallery to view Ecki’s work, and they may purchase a special item of art for their own home. Most of the time though, Ecki and Marilyn market the art work by taking part in craft fairs.

“At some I do well, with others I do not,” commented the art-

ist on selling his work through craft fairs.

The couple say they have a few tentative ideas in mind for marketing; such as going on the road to sell their creations. But right now, they have no immediate plans that they want to follow.

“We like it here in Vavenby,” says Ecki, “We feel comfortable around here, and we do enjoy to be with the friends we have made in the area. For now, ‘Ecki’s Art’ will have its home in the North Thompson Valley .”

Photographing Rob’s and Geocaching at Sun Camille’s farm wedding Peaks produces tales and treasures

Making Pictures with

Kamloops This Week

John E n ma n When Camille called and said, “Rob and I are getting married. Would you be our photographer?”

I didn’t hesitate for a minute and replied, “Yes!” I think I added something like, “Its about time.”

I knew it would be fun, relaxed, unusual, and I was absolutely sure they would be as non-traditional as possible.

These days I shy away from taking on the job of wedding photographer, only making myself available for those weddings that seem fun.

I figure I have paid my dues when it comes to wedding photographer. It used to be that by spring I anticipated I’d be pointing my camera at excited couples every weekend till Thanksgiving. Those days are behind me, and now I just pick and choose to photograph people I know, or people that know people I know.

So I packed two camera bodies, a 24-70mm and a 70200mm lens with a couple of flashes and set out for their rural farm down-the-roada-piece from here at Monte Lake. I think they would have held the ceremony on the lake, but finding space between the boats, the trailers, and the campers this time of year is hard.

Rob had set up two large seating areas, one under a very large tarp, and the other in an open-sided tent of the type the big stores use when they have a sale on furniture or something large.

I said their wedding would be a fun, relaxed, unusual, nontraditional and will add that by the time I arrived the partying guests had spread out across much of the property.

I’ll begin with all the shiny, big, loud-

engined, large-tires with fancy rims kind of trucks with floorboards several feet off the ground that just kept rolling in honking and parking anywhere that wasn’t occupied by seemingly out-of-place cars like my little Honda.

While at the same time Harley Davidson motorcycles were arriving and arriving. Add to that several very young drivers, zooming back and forth on quads, and little dirt bikes, greeting those guests as they got out of their trucks and off their motorcycles.

And dogs, I had to get around to the dogs.

I knew Rob and Camille had four or five, but there were others running around and more waited for their owners to open their truck tailgates so they could join the festivities.

Several young men filled a horse-watering trough with beer, pop, bottled water, and ice.

And as they arrived people would take food to tables in the center of a big truck garage. I would expect nothing different as Rob and Camille do like a party, and all I had to do was point my camera any direction and watch the fun and enjoyment As everyone walked through the meadow to rows of white chairs set up for ceremony, low clouds rolled in warning us all to beware of coming events with a sprinkle or two of rain. With the knowledge it was going to get darker, I selected ISO 800 on my camera. I also had an extra handkerchief ready in my pocket to wipe the rain off my camera and flash to keep it dry to prevent shorting the electronic circuits.

Weddings usually start the same. The guests sit in anticipation, with the groom

Rob and Camille’s wedding was friendly and enjoyable with great people, a fun party, big shiny trucks, flashy motorcycles and lots of animals – the kind of event any photographer would enjoy. at the front, waiting for the arrival of the bride. Then the bridesmaids come walking in, and the bride enters arm and arm with her father.

In Rob and Camille’s case, the groom was waiting at the front with his dog and the bride walked up with her father flanked by her two very large mastiffs and in the distance some horses and a calf watched.

And folks this was unrehearsed. The dogs did what they did on their own.

Guests were capturing the event with their cell phones. I recalled a time when I had the only single lens reflex camera at a wedding. It seems history was repeating itself and technology has marched on and again I had the only SLR. The wedding ceremony photographs included dogs.

The minister; a “new age religion type” tried to keep everything solemn, speaking of love and commitment, but thanks to those very interested in being part of everything dogs, there was a lot of laughing.

I dialed down my flash (readers know I

always use flash.) to balance the diminishing light and shot the ceremony, dogs and all, did the obligatory family photos, and the bridal party leaning on a rail fence pictures.

Then a cool breeze wandered in and the rain gods decided it was time to get things wet and opened the floodgates for the rain and the rest of my day was left to making a documentary of their friends at the party, eating and getting wet by the bonfire.

The day at Rob and Camille’s was a perfect way to end the week. A great wedding with friendly and enjoyable people, a fun party, big shiny trucks and flashy motorcycles to look at, lots of animals and of course the kind of event any photographer would enjoy.

As we reached the border between spring and winter, I was reminded of my mesh footwear.

Slushy snow seeped into my running shoes and I officially crossed into committed territory.

I should have known alpine hiking in May would probably mean snow.

Our group continued through, sinking with each step into what was once fluffy white stuff and which was now slushy and brownish goop.

We strategized our footwork, taking refuge on grassy knolls, logs and other traces of earth, adding another level to our game.

We couldn’t turn back because the GPS said we were metres from finding our treasure.

Our ambitious Sun Peaks geocaching adventure eventually paid off as we signed our names on the tiny scroll and made our way back to dry land.

We tailored the rest of the day, however, to be less soggy by staying closer to base level.

We took in the mountain beauty by the light of spring and approached the bunny hill.

I pictured miniature snowsuits and clumsily crossed skis in place of the newly formed creek that had resulted from a melting run.

We walked along the stream and a curious piece of Styrofoam filtered through the channel.

“How did that get there?” I wondered.

We continued toward our next cache, huffing up the run that was once so easy to glide down on my snowboard.

I stared up with envy at the lifeless chairlifts that would effortlessly bring hikers up the mountain, beginning in June. We stopped briefly and noticed a small bottle of bourbon.

No, this was not a mirage or surprise watering hole. It was just the bottle — an empty bottle that looked rather old.

“How long has that been there?” I thought.

We located two more geocaches in the next hour, but we made several other discoveries while scaling the slopes.

We found money, remnants of fireworks, other beverage containers, the button flap from a jacket and a wrench.

Items lost during the ski season had reappeared with the melting of the snow.

On New Year’s Eve, fireworks mark the impending calendar change on the mountain; the wrench had taken on a rustier persona and I imagined someone pulling their jacket flap, tearing it as they quickly raced toward the bottom.

Stories were swapped about ski trips that ended with missing items — keys, an iPod and money.

It all made me wonder what else is found at Sun Peaks when the snow melts.

I contacted mountain staff and learned about a lost and found located at guest services in the Village Day Lodge. Phone 250-578-7878 if you’ve lost something on the hill.

But, I also learned how one lost item was reunited with its owner.

Aidan Kelly, director of sales and marketing, said a camera was found last year by a maintenance worker after the melt.

The SD card was intact and the photographs were preserved.

The employee posted some of the pictures on the online resource website camerafound.com that reconnects people with lost cameras.

I took a glance at the site myself and, though I found nothing currently listed under a search of “Kamloops” or “Sun Peaks,” there were 3,569 lost cameras archived across the world.

Lost memories could be seen from wedding photos, travel photos and, yes, the odd selfie.

Though Kelly said the camera found at Sun Peaks was destroyed, the family was reunited with their memories through the site.

They had apparently travelled from out of town to the mountain and who knows what memories were captured on that SD card?

Maybe the first time skiing or perhaps a first encounter with snow?

Maybe a life milestone was celebrated?

Maybe it was just full of selfies.

Whatever the photo or memory, it seems geocaches aren’t the only treasures to be found in the snow.

Dairy Salad

Ingredients ¾ cup cottage cheese ½ cup sour cream salt and pepper ½ tsp dill weed 1 English cucumber, diced ½ green onion, thinly sliced Instructions: Mix cottage cheese, sour cream, salt, pepper and dill.

Add cucumber and green onion.

Fruity Salad Ingredients 1 ½ tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp red wine vinegar ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp black pepper ¼ cup walnut pieces 4 cups baby spinach 1 pear, peeled, halved

lengthwise, cored and thinly sliced ½ cup dried cranberries ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion (optional) Instructions: Whisk oil, vinegar, salt and pepper in a large bowl.

Add pear, spinach, cranberries, walnuts and onion. Toss well and serve.

Simple to make.

Parmesan Drop Biscuits Ingredients 1 ½ cups flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp parsley flakes (optional) 3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese 1/3 cup margarine

¾ cup milk Instructions: Put flour, baking powder, parsley flakes and cheese in a processor. Cut hard margarine into 6 pieces. Add to processor (or use a pastry blender) until mixture resembles coarse bread crumbs. Add milk and stir until just moistened and dough is sticky.

Drop by large spoonfuls, about 12, onto a greased baking sheet.

Bake on centre rack at 425F until golden, about 12 minutes.

David John Waversek born April 4, 1932 in Walthemstowe, England passed away peacefully on the evening of May 20, 2014 after bravely battling cancer.

Dave came to Canada with his father William Wilfred Waversek and his younger brother Leonard Arthur Waversek in 1954 from England on the M.V. Georgia. The three of them landed in Halifax and took the train out west to Smithers B.C. Dave, his brother and father worked at an experimental farm for a season until they decided to move to the coast and became floor layers. Working as floor layers they had the dream of earning enough money to buy a farm of their own. They managed to buy land at Buffalo Lake near 100 Mile House where they farmed from 1968 to 1995. The three of them had all kinds of critters from cattle, cats, dogs, pigs and the occasional moose. Dave and Len really enjoyed the sense of community farming brought especially in the 100 Mile area. Dave always spoke fondly of all their neighbours especially Ted and Rita Pincott and their 4 boys.

Barry and Lynn Bush, Lilly Waller, Anne Bashall and the Horn family. They were always more than happy to lend Dave and Len a helping hand, which

they are eternally grateful for.

After selling the farm at Buffalo Lake in 1995 to Ainsworth Lumber Company they moved to Little Fort. This was going to be their retirement farm, which was supposed to be a 5-year plan. They farmed there from 1995 to 2013 with the last few years having some help from a very dear friend and neighbour Michelle Hauser.

They finally did retire, sold the farm and moved across the river. They then had time to go on the ocean fishing trip they always dreamt about and just enjoyed not doing early morning irrigation.

Some of Len’s fondest memories with Dave included laying in one of the cow pastures in the shade on a hot day with the cows coming over to them and I’m sure the cows were saying

“hey, why aren’t you busy making us hay?” Or last summer going on the salmon fishing trip together and constantly bugging each other by saying “keep your tip up!”

Dave is survived by his brothers Stanly William Waversek, wife Doreen Betty Waversek (England), Leonard Arthur Waversek (Little Fort), niece Dawn Florence Mary Waversek, and husband Tony, great niece Gemma, and great nephew Jamie, nephew Mark Waversek. (England) Dave is predeceased by father William Wilfred Waversek 1984 (100 Mile) and mother Isabell Mary Waversek (White) 1952 (England).

Len Waversek and Michelle Hauser would like to thank all the staff at Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital for their unwavering support in attending to Dave in his time of need, of which we are eternally grateful.

A service will be held for Dave on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Little Fort Cemetery at 11 a.m. with a celebration of his life at Len Waversek’s home to follow. All friends welcome to attend and tell stories of their fond memories of Dave.

A walk in the park

I started out this year extremely depressed, low on energy and reluctant to get out of bed. Like an alcoholic falling off the wagon, I had once again succumbed to my junk food addiction, knowing full well I was making my situation far worse. I’d gained weight and felt sick, both physically as well as mentally. I was also avoiding people because I didn’t think I had much to offer in my darker state.

When I finally agreed to meet up with one of my best friends for coffee, she confessed to me that she was feeling some of the same things that I was. Like me, her stress and anxiety were taking a toll and she was also self-sabotaging with junk food and not taking good care of herself. We decided to help each other, but we weren’t sure how to go about doing that.

At first, we’d just talk about our troubles and support each other’s efforts to eat clean, get more active and do things that would improve our well being. But despite our mutual desire to shape up, nothing much was happening for either one of us.

After several weeks of healthy eating and exercising separately, we saw little to no change and decided to try walking together to see if that would help. It did.

My first stroll with Kim was by the lake in Peachland and she walked so fast I had a flashback to being a little kid trying to keep up with my dad. I couldn’t believe someone the same height as me was able to make strides as though their legs were twice as long, but she walked that way the next time we met as well. I hadn’t thought of this simple form of exercise as being much of a workout, but with Kim

it definitely was.

It wasn’t too strenuous though. I used to work really hard running and lifting weights, and I never considered walking – even speed walking – enough of an aerobic challenge to make any significant changes to my body. Yet it is all I’ve been doing for exercise the last few months, and I’ve lost 35 pounds as a result.

I can thank Kim for getting me started on all this, but she’s no longer my only fitness friend. From the moment I get up, my ridiculously excitable dogs start following me around the house visibly eager to go for their morning hike. Witnessing their unmistakable glee as they frolic in the woods has been an amazing and healing way to start the day, no matter what the weather might be like.

I’m not lying in bed reluctant to get out of it anymore. I’m now enthusiastic about moving my legs and breathing in the fresh outdoor air, just as much as the dogs are.

Many of my friends that I’d typically sit and have coffee with have become my walking-talking partners as well. Even my husband and kids are joining me and the pups.

I feel ready to intensify my exercise routine, and I have plans to do that, but I don’t imagine I’ll ever stop going on my wonderful non-workout feeling walks. Besides helping me slim down, they’ve been inexpensive and effective therapy sessions for my depression and anxiety.

They’ve also been so enjoyable that this whole experience has felt easy. Turns out I like easy. It seems to like me too.

A chair that tells the story

By Michele Blais Black Press We are opening up our cottage and as I do every year I assess what stays and what goes; I like to improve, adjust, change our cottage every year. Some years the changes or improvements are more dramatic than others, tweaking vs overhaul.

There is the “chair” — the green chair, captain’s chair, antique chair, story- of-my-life chair. It will stay this year like it does every year.

I bought the chair the first year I lived in Vernon. We rented a shop on 32nd Avenue and our landlord was an antique dealer. He was a nice man with a southern accent, from Georgia, who imported antiques.

I love antiques and only those that I can use for daily living like tables, chairs, hutches, benches that are practical. I love that others dined at our tables. That their clothes and treasures filled the drawers and that they have sat in those seats. I especially love chairs. Furniture, not dishes or glassware, hold my interest, the marks on the wood have a story and I love stories.

The design of the leg, the carvings, the details and pride in the craftsmanship are appealing and we often do not see that today in the mass-produced furniture of today. It could be an ornate detail or a clean simple line that is attractive.

My green chair is of the old style captain’s variety, with stuffing made of horse hair I am sure. We bought it when I was pregnant with our first child. It was the go- to chair for nursing, storytelling, relaxing. It is a chair that you can swing your legs over easily, the type of chair Santa would be comfortable in. It was a favourite seat in our den, often piled high with big cushions when the lads were younger to give

them a different perspective on the world.

This was where we sat to share the events of our day, funny stories and sad stories. Where I heard about troubles, joys and adventures, or where we go when we needed to “talk.” With some families it might be the couch, dining or kitchen table, or a big comfy bed. We have these spots in our home that are special.

The green chair has been in our home since the beginning of the “us” as a family.

Now at the lake it sits in the “great room” in front of the wood stove and is still the chair that I like best. To read in, to stretch out comfortably with a foot stool to share conversations, enjoy the quiet and perhaps have a nap. Like a favourite blanket that has become a comfort, the chair is to me; it’s familiar.

Each year I consider having it upholstered and go and look for fabric, get a swatch, keep it on it for a week to get a feel for whether it will work, and I keep it the same. I still can’t seem to find the “right” fabric.

For a woman who loves to change up the interior of our home I’ve decided this chair will not be changing. I will keep the green velvet that is worn, shape a quilt around it or perhaps put a slip cover on it so that I can peek under and see the original, and meander down memory lane. It is not torn, just old.

Before it was with us, this chair was a comfortable place for other moms and dads and children to sit, read stories, share cuddles and conversations.

In a world where we replace and dispose of items so quickly I like to keep my old furniture that has stood the test of time: solid, still useful and adaptable, and for what it represents to me.

When caterpillars invade, learn to fight back

By Paul Rudan Black Press Hairy little crawlers are dropping in your hair, squishing underfoot and ruining your deciduous trees.

The tent caterpillars are back and this year it seems like they’ve arrived with an invasion force.

“Every seven years they seem to peak,” says Nigel Lambeth of Campbell River Garden Centre.

Entomologists say the cycle for the western tent caterpillar is roughly every nine years with a threeyear population outbreak.

This would be one of those outbreak years and it’s hard not to miss the silken tents wrapped around the tender branch ends and new leaves.

But then those white tents transform into dark writhing balls of hungry caterpillars which feed, cocoon and transform into moths, before starting the whole cycle again.

Generally, tent caterpillars won’t decimate or kill larger trees, but they’re still a stressor on plants and can defoliate small trees. More than anything, they’re considered an unsightly nuisance and despised by many a gardener.

“We stocked up on BTK because we knew what sort of year it was going to be,” says Lambeth.

BTK, or Bacillus thuringiensis, “is found naturally in the soil and is known to cause illness in various insect larvae, including caterpillars,” according to the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources.

The bacteria, notes Lambeth, is very effective in

controlling caterpillar populations as it disrupts their digestive systems. Better still, according to the ministry website, there’s, “no known toxic effects on humans or other mammals, plants, birds, fish, honeybees, or other beneficial insects.”

But there are other ways to control caterpillars which can continue the hatch through the summer.

Lambeth advises to look for the eggs which appear as a “smear of brown chewing gum” on leaves. This can be easily wiped off. Another simple method is to break off the branch ends that have nests and properly dispose of them.

A slightly more involved process requires plucking out the majority of caterpillars, but leaving behind the ones which have vivid white dots around the head.

These dots are the eggs of parasitic wasps and flies. And if you think squishing caterpillars underfoot is gross, get this, when the maggots hatch, they feed on the caterpillar’s non-essential organs so then the major organs last!

It’s all natural, Lambeth says with a grin, and the parasitic insects help keep the caterpillar populations in check throughout the summer.

Finally, he adds, it’s a good idea to give infected trees a little more water and a shot of fertilizer to encourage new leaf growth.

Last, but not least, it’s never a good idea to try burning caterpillar tents when they’re still in the tree.

You may set fire to the entire tree and surrounding grasses, and this sort of pest eradication is sure to bring a visit from the fire department.
