Langford fastball hosting dance

An evening of fun and entertainment is in store this Saturday (May 31) as Langford Minor Fastball hosts its annual dance and silent auction.

Hundreds of Sooke School District teachers and their supporters lined Veteran’s Memorial Parkway this week on the first day of a series of rotating strikes around the province.

Stage 2 of a three-stage plan from the B.C. Teachers Federation went into action Monday in response to slowed negotiations with the government on a new deal.

Coming into effect the same day was a lockout that prevents teachers from coming in earlier than 45 minutes before the first class, or staying 45 minutes after the last class.

Paul Waterlander, a BCTF vicepresident and a half-time history teacher at Belmont secondary, said teachers feel they don’t have much of a choice on whether to strike or not.

“The government has all the cards here, they are the ones that create the bargaining structure.

We have said the structure has been faulty for a long time, but they have yet to move it,” he said.

“What the teachers are doing is reactive. We can’t tell the government how the bargaining should look, it is something that they have to address.”

Waterlander held firm that salaries, class sizes, and support for special needs students are important factors in the negotiations.

Monday’s show of solidarity saw upwards of 300 of the 650 to 750 contract and non-contract teachers in the Sooke School District take part.

“Today we are showing the public and province the way public

education is going right now is not the way it should be going,” said music teacher Maureen Garry.

“We have found over the years the services we can provide are less and less because there is less funding for special needs students, there are less teachers and the job gets harder and harder.”

Standing outside David Cameron elementary in Langford, where she has taught for seven years, Garry said the last thing she wanted was to be standing at the curb with a sign hanging on her neck, instead of being inside

teaching her students.

“It is really unfortunate we have gotten to this point, but when things are quiet in the schools, nobody pays much attention until there is some sort of disruption,” she said.

“We have tried to make it peaceful for the students studying in our school.”

Board of education chair Wendy Hobbs said the board is in the process of sending a letter to the government to ask for a negotiated settlement, but that is easier said than done. She hopes a settlement

is forthcoming, with teachers back in the classrooms full time and students back at their desks.

“We want our kids to get back to school,” she said. “We don’t want to see rotating strikes affect field trips. Who it is really hurting is the children.”

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said no legislation is planned to end the teacher strike and the government won’t be imposing any contract extensions on the union.

Stage 2 comes on the heels of teachers refusal to do certain administrative duties and child supervision in stage 1. Stage 3 would be a full-scale walkout by all teachers in the union, but such a move must be approved by the union members first. That vote has not yet happened.

“The toughest part for me is watching a government pretend to bargain, but not really, which creates this crisis,” Waterlander said. “Which forces us to walk out on our jobs and leave the students that we are teaching, and that is really hard.” alim@vicnews.com

Trades excellence recognized Scholarships awarded to West Shore students Three former Sooke School District students have been awarded $3,000 worth of scholarships toward their studies in trades local programs.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Black Press have jointly produced the new B.C. Hunting & Trapping Regulations Synopsis, available online and in hard copy.

The guide is an important reference used by more than 100,000 licensed hunters in the province to navigate the numerous regulation changes, of which there are 50 this year. It helps hunters decipher open seasons and plan upcoming hunting trips.

Other information includes hunter education about the different game available in the

province, areas designated as no hunting or shooting zones, and resource management for the eight regions in B.C. that make up one of the most diverse hunting grounds in the west.

“The (Fish, Habitat and Wildlife Branch) is committed to providing sustainable hunting opportunities for the province and encouraging people to go out there and enjoy the outdoors,” said government policy and regulations analyst Stephen MacIver. “B.C. has more big game species than any other jurisdiction in North America and provides some of the best hunting opportunities in the world.”

The guide is effective July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2016 and tar-

gets the rising number of local and tourist hunters who set their sights on prized moose, elk, deer, sheep and goats. The number of people purchasing hunting tags has jumped from approximately 80,000 in 2003 to over 100,000 today.

With more residents taking hunter safety training, MacIver projects that number will continue to increase.

Mediator crucial for labour logjam Members of the B.C. Teachers Federation working in the Sooke School District used part of their one-day strike Monday to march down Veteran’s Memorial Parkway in a rally of solidarity.

The teachers received an outpouring of local support for their move. But the longstanding dispute between the BCTF and the B.C. Liberal government is also one of the most polarizing in recent memory.

On the one hand are people familiar with the day-to-day challenges teachers face, i.e. parents. They know those challenges were exacerbated when the province cut in-class resources and maxed out class sizes. They especially feel for the educators if they happen to have special needs children who are falling through the cracks with the system operating as it is.

On the other hand are people who believe teachers have it made: they already make good money and receive the equivalent of three months’ paid holidays a year. On average, they’re paid above average compared to other workers in B.C. society.

Many rank-and-file teachers admit money is not the key issue, it’s working conditions.

They seem hampered by the fact their union executive continues to argue for a return to smaller classes and more teaching assistants, as well as demanding significant raises.

The province insists there’s not enough money available to do both. Fair enough, but why take the aggressive step of calling for inordinate cash penalties against striking teachers before ruling out all potential compromises ahead of either side stepping away from the bargaining table?

To us it’s painfully obvious the two sides need the services of an independent mediator to help settle this ugly, ongoing dispute.

While it’s anyone’s guess as to whether each side would agree to live with that person’s recommendations, it’s certainly worth a try.

Regardless of which side one happens to be on, no one wants to see this whole sorry affair drag on year after year and put the education of our children at risk.

LETTERS Langford’s approach makes sense for region Re: Amalgamation could save millions for region (Letters, May 21) I agree fully with Lesley Ewing’s support for amalgamation of Greater Victoria, as to my mind there is currently total duplication of municipal positions. It is a socialist way of running a small area of a country. Big government does not make for more efficient use of tax dollars, period.

I also think if we had a council like Langford’s, we would be set. They are progressive and gets things done to the betterment of the community they represent.

Some municipalities are afraid to put the amalgamation question on this fall’s ballot. Why won’t they do so? That would be democracy, government for the people by the people.

I returned to Greater Victoria after 26 years in Vernon. They had three municipalities there in 1985 (for 35,000 people) – Okanagan Landing, Coldstream and Vernon.

About 1990 the province did away with OK Landing and reduced it to two.

By 2012 we were up to

between 60,000 and 70,000 people.

In Coldstream we won the vote not to build a new municipal hall and repair shop complex. Guess what?

They built it anyway. Is this also democracy?

Option offered on affordable housing Re: Langford puts affordable housing on the market (Gazette, May 16) While I must give Langford council credit for having an affordable housing program that clearly works, I feel there is room for improvement.

I have a different approach municipalities across B.C. could take to affordable housing. Arrange long-term funding from the Municipal Finance Authority to build housing units. Place tenders in newspapers for builders, but rather than just go with the lowest bidder, award contracts to construction companies that have demonstrated an ability to

complete projects on time and on budget, mitigating the risk of costly delays and budget overruns.

A separate tender could also be put out for property management companies to arrange rent-to-own plans, with criteria set out by the local government, but approved by the company.

The portion of rent normally retained by the property manager could go

back to the city to repay the MFA. So the city funds the housing with self-supported debt, but that does not mean they have to assemble the crew to build, manage or sell them. With a consortium of public funding and private expertise, it would also be less open to political favouritism, real or perceived.

Falcon Gymnastics, which hosted the meet, had other athletes who excelled among the 250 gymnasts competing from around B.C. and Alberta.

Emma Longbottom won all around in P2 Novice (2001) thanks to golds on bars and floor and silvers in beam and vault. Emily Lyall won the all around in P2 Novice Open (2000) with wins in floor and beam, a second on bars and a

third on vault.

Emily Bolink competed in Level 4 Open (born 1999 or earlier) and won gold on beam and bars and placed third in the allaround.

Veronica Chu, took first all-around in P2 Tyro (2002) having won gold in bars and beam and tying for third on floor.

Teammate Mia Butcher wound up third in the division, following second-place finishes

on vault and bars and a third on beam.

Makena Spanier was consistent, taking third in vault, bars and floor en route to the third all-around finish in P3 Open. Ella Kendler won vault in P1 Argo (2006), while Karley Telford tied for third on bars in P2 Argo (2004).

Simple ingrown toenail can be a real risk Nate Clark News staff

Bruce Taylor has journeyed a long way just to get his toenails clipped.

In fact, six times a year Taylor gets in his car and makes the two-and-a-half hour journey from Vancouver to Victoria, just to see his favourite foot doctor.

This might seem extreme, but Taylor is fiercely loyal to his Victoria podiatrist, and for good reason. Years ago, after he sought treatment for a common foot problem, an infected toenail, he found himself in a position that could have eventually cost him his leg.

“Bruce was on an I.V. of antibiotics,” says Dr. William Mirchoff, former president of the B.C. Association of Podiatrists, the Canadian Podiatric Medical Association, and miracle worker for seniors like Taylor. “Ninetynine per cent of the time they are going to give you antibiotics. But if you take the piece of nail out that’s causing the chronic infec-

“I have neuropathy and it didn’t heal,” says Taylor.

“When you’re older you might not have enough circulation for your feet to heal. You might end up having your leg taken off below the knee. Now I only come to this guy.”

Taylor isn’t exaggerating.

The neuropathy he’s talking about is a nerve condition common to the elderly, where areas of the body can become chronically numb.

Any injuries or infections in those areas can be aggravated if not treated quickly.

“Seniors can have callouses or ulcers that they aren’t aware of,” explains Mirchoff. “They can develop into infections that don’t heal properly. Then they are in danger of losing their foot, or their leg.”

“I guarantee you,” says Taylor, red-faced from howling, “that most doctors aren’t nearly as much fun.”

“Yeah, other doctors are boring,” Mirchoff cracks before the two break into another gale.

When it comes to seniors and their feet, Mirchoff says

that prevention is key. Having that ingrown toenail checked, or getting fitted for a good pair of orthotics can mean the difference between mobility and stagnation.

Never too old to talk about the birds and bees N othing is safe when we talk about senior sex I love to surf seniors’ websites, but lately I have been put off by a proliferation of articles about elderly parents dating and having sex.

As boomers we all know that our senior parents don’t have sex. It just wouldn’t be right.

I recall when I was a lad inadvertently barging into my parents’ bedroom one Sunday morning when they were taking a walk on the wild side. Even though I had no idea what

Brian Kieran was going on they were so mortified that they stopped this unseemly activity altogether.

By the time I left home for university they were too old for sex so the issue was moot. I moved on through

life satisfied that most parents stop having sex after the kids are born and the rest stop after they are caught in the act by their impressionable nine-yearolds.

Now, I read on caregiverstress.com that our parents are going at it well into their senior years.

The New England Journal of Medicine reports that more than 25 per cent of seniors aged 75 to 85 are sexually active. The number rises above 50 per cent for seniors ages 65 to 74.

This news just in … according to results of a

survey commissioned by Home Instead Inc. sex is absolutely the last thing adult children want to talk about with their senior parents.

Why in heavens name would a boomer like me want to go down such an embarrassing path with a senior parent? Well, CBS News tells me that sexually transmitted diseases have more than doubled over the past decade in the 50 to 90 demographic.

Apparently my assumption that my generation is aware of the commonly known risks associated with sexual activity is false. CBS

says senior baby boomers originally became sexually active at a time when free love was relatively free of STDs and ‘safe sex’ was not part of our lexicon.

Everythingzoomer.com states the obvious: “No matter how close you are to your senior parent, discussing the details of your loved one’s dating life will likely be a little awkward for the both of you. He or she may feel embarrassed or may not want to talk about it at all.”

Regardless, we are urged to have the talk … the same talk most of our par-

ents did not have the courage to have with us when we were 15. So, how does that chat go?

“Mom? Got a minute? I hear you’re dating one of your neighbours at Shady Rest … Charlie, the balding guy three doors down on the left. Wanna talk about it?”

“I’m mortified. Where did you hear such outlandish gossip, son?”

“Down at the bowling alley of all places, mom.”

“That’s ridiculous. Which side? Five pin or 10?”

“Five.”

“That no good bum is cut off.”

Q&A Gayle Vaughan Gayle Vaughan, 72, was born in Winnipeg Manitoba and at the age of three moved to Victoria where she attended school at Bank Street Elementary (now the Victoria School of Art), Margaret Jenkins Elementary and Oak Bay Junior High. Jokingly Gayle says, “my misspent youth, I was married at 21.”

She has three children and two grandchildren. Seven years ago Vaughan moved to the Tillicum area to be closer to family and with that she discovered the Saanich Silver Threads Service at the Les Passmore Centre where she enjoys the ‘guess who is coming to dinner’ and the ‘Monday social tea.’

Q What is your favourite Greater Victoria place or activity?

A “The scenery, the weather, it is a pretty city. If you don’t have enough money for a vacation there is lots to do in Victoria with arts, beaches etc.”

Barbara Waldner, 82,is originally from Saskatoon, she and her husband, Harvey, moved to Victoria in 1964 with two little girls and four years later they produced twin boys! They moved to Cordova Bay in 1965 and she has been widowed for 11 years now. She says, “Cordova Bay is a perfect place to raise a family and the 55+ Association offers an abundant variety of activities, besides lasting friendships.” She has 11 grandchildren and two great grandsons and feels fortunate to have all her family living close by. “Life offers so much to us and I have been fortunate to be able to keep active in my church, theatre, dance, artistic creativity, the For the Love of Africa Society and volunteer work in our wide community.” To keep fit, she cycles walks, exercises and dances, and has started taking ukelele lessons.

Shirley Smirke, 83, has been a part of the Monterey Recreation Centre for about 22 years, taking part in their craft carnival and volunteering at the rummage sale. She loves Saanich for its mixture of farmsand semi-rural atmosphere mixed with developments. She loves walking in her favourite places: Swan Lake and Mount Doug Park.

She likes to knit, embroider and does plenty of reading. Her favourite types of books include history, mysteries, biographies and anything that looks good.
