Penhold woman charged in fatal hit and run BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF A woman believed to be linked to a fatal hit and run crash with a teen longboarder west of Penhold faces several charges, after she turned herself in to police who found her car burned in a field. The woman reported to Innisfail RCMP on Saturday, a few days after the crash that killed Trystan Sorensen, 18, of Penhold. Jessica Masyk, 25, of Penhold has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision, public mischief and driving while unauthorized. The mischief charge involves her allegedly making a false statement accusing some other person of committing an offence. Sorensen was killed when he was hit by a vehicle on May 20 at about 10:30 p.m. while he was longboarding with a friend about five km west of Penhold on Hwy 592. The collision occurred just west of where Sorensen lived. On Wednesday, a 2003 Dodge Durango was reported stolen. It was soon located, burned in a farmer’s field east of Innisfail. On Saturday, the registered owner and alleged driver at the time of the collision was contacted by police. The same day, she turned herself into the Innisfail detachment. Amy Sorensen, Trystan Sorensen’s mother, said RCMP informed the family. Amy said she has mixed emotions about the news. “We’re angry that she took so long,” said Amy. Amy said there has been a huge outpouring of support for the family from her son’s friends. Trystan Sorensen’s brother Harry Midgely also expressed sympathy and compassion for the situation. “I’m not mad at her, there are certain details I understand that make her own life complicated,” said Midgely. “It doesn’t make it right, and she did eventually come forward. It’s not going to do any good to be angry, it’s not going to change anything, it’s not going to make anything better.” Innisfail RCMP are still vigorously investigating the details of the collision and are seeking public assistance. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-227-3342 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477. The friend Trystan Sorensen was with was not injured. A public viewing was scheduled for Monday night at Parkland Funeral Home. Masyk has been released from custody and will appear in Red Deer provincial court on June 20. mcrawford@reddeeradvocate.com

Good Samaritan returns cache of $50 bills to rightful owner BY JOSH ALDRICH ADVOCATE STAFF If you found $1,500 what would you do? For Susan Bombase, there was no question: Get it back to its rightful owner. Bombase, 52, came across the cache of $50 bills in a package of stockings she picked up at Once Again Consignment Boutique in Red Deer. She immediately contacted the store’s owner Jeanette Mitten who spent the next couple of weeks going back through records and client lists to find who the money belonged to. On Monday, the two ladies finally returned the money to a Lacombe senior, who asked to be kept out of the story. “Finding something that doesn’t really belong to you, especially cash, I have a joy in being able to give the money back to the owner,” said Bombase. “The first thing I thought was, ‘I have to give back the cash.’” $1,500 is a lot of money to someone like Bombase, a Philippines native who immigrated to Canada 24 years ago and now has citizenship.
She works two jobs, one at the Village Mall A&W, owned by Mitten’s husband Wayne Mitten, and next door at Dollarama, while her husband works at a bottle depot. Mitten was in the process of packing up the boutique, preparing to move the store to a new location at 4909-48th St. She had received a few large donations of older women’s clothing that did not quite work with her store and so she marked them for donation to Dress for Success. But before she moved them on, she gave a number of employees like Bombase the opportunity to come in and pick through the lot. Bombase chose a few items, including what appeared to be a new package of stockings, of which there were a large number. When she got home, she put the clothes, still in the bag, in her room and took a few days to get around to going through her selections. When she came back to the stockings it was then that she realized the package was rather thick, thinking it must have been a multi-pack, but then discovered an envelope with 30 $50 bills inside.
