Southside Dodge’s Mopar Mammas, also known as from the left Steve Vines, Sean Drouillard, Davin Simao and Sheldon Savoie, pause to show off a little leg along the course of the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in Red Deer on Thursday. About 150 men tossed aside their sensible footwear during the third annual walk and pumped things up wearing women’s high-heels. Many of the participants took things a little further, completing their outfit with a wide range of dresses and mini-skirts. An estimated $30,000 was raised at the event, which is held in support of the Women’s Outreach Society in Red Deer.
Program forces suspended students to confront drug issues BY MYLES FISH ADVOCATE STAFF Student breaks the rules. Student gets suspended from school. Student effectively gets free vacation. It may not be an ideal situation, but for the offending student the punishment may not be so bad. Even if it comes from some behaviour one has to answer for, it would be hard to find any teenager not excited about three to five days without any classes or requirements. That was the outcome for transgressing students with the Red Deer Public School District up until early this school year.

Judge questions cellphone bail ban BY BRENDA KOSSOWAN ADVOCATE STAFF
But a new program is keeping pupils suspended because of drug issues working on their school work and considering the choices that put them in the predicament. George MacLeod wags a finger in my face and sternly says “Don’t do drugs!” He is demonstrating not his approach to getting students on the straight and narrow, but exactly the type of overture he says has failed with kids. “My own view is that the scare tactics haven’t worked with kids. Kids turn off,” said MacLeod, a drug education specialist with McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association.
A visiting judge has raised questions about the practice in Red Deer provincial court of banning some people from having cellphones, pagers and Internet-capable computers while they are on bail or probation. Prohibiting cellphones puts people in danger and increases the risk that they will violate their release conditions, Judge Judy Shriar said on Tuesday while hearing how a man awaiting trial on fraud charges ended up back in remand after failing to report to his bail review officer. Defence counsel Andrew Phypers explained to the judge that his client had found a new job and left early in the morning to work out of town.

Red Deer’s two MLAs have thrown their support behind Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Jim Prentice, who formally launched his campaign on Wednesday. Cal Dallas, Red Deer South LUKASZUK MLA and minister of International JOINS RACE A3 and Intergovernmental Relations, and Red Deer North MLA Mary Anne Jablonski are among the list of 45 out of the 58 PC MLAs who have endorsed Prentice, a former federal cabinet minister. “Having known Jim for some time, I’ve come to admire his approach to politics,” said Dallas. “He has a real passion for Alberta and I see the commitment he’s prepared to make. So based on my personal knowledge of him and what I’ve seen him do, I’m very happy to be supporting him.” He said Prentice will take a common-sense leadership approach and is an avid relationship builder. With Prentice at the helm of the party, Dallas added it would also be a positive for Central Albertans. “He understands how the economy of Alberta works, how important accessing international markets is, the importance of diversification and to make sure that the entrepreneurs, innovators have opportunities moving forward. That’s really what Central Alberta is all about . . . energy services, agriculture, manufacturing, all of that. And that comes with a very strong commitment to education and environment. These are the pieces that are important to Central Alberta.” Dallas said while no dates have been set, he fully expects to see Prentice make a campaign stop sometime soon in Red Deer. Jablonski, who has known Prentice for the past 12 years through government relations, echoed Dallas, saying Prentice is a “highly honourable” person. “I know he’s done some good things with our aboriginal communities . . . and he’s very environmentally tuned in,” she said. “I think he really means what he says and that’s important.”
