‘I love this place’ JIM PRENTICE LAUNCHES PC LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGN, VOWS TO FIX REDFORD-ERA SCANDALS BY DEAN BENNETT THE CANADIAN PRESS EDMONTON — Jim Prentice officially launched his Alberta Tory leadership bid Wednesday by promising to take a sandblaster to the cronyism and luxury perks of the Alison Redford era.
“The bond of trust between the people of Alberta and their elected representatives must be repaired,” Prentice told 100 cheering supporters at the downtown CKUA building. “I will introduce clear rules. I will change the way that things are done and I promise you that those rules will be enforced with discipline. “If you are a part of my government you will be held to the standard of being a servant of the people of Alberta.” It was the first time Prentice spoke about his plans for running the province should he defeat former infrastructure minister Ric McIver in the
Progressive Conservative leadership vote on Sept. 6. The race was called after Redford resigned on March 23 ahead of a caucus revolt over accusations of imperious leadership and revelations of exorbitant spending on herself and her inner circle. Prentice, a former MP and cabinet minister under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, said the new rules will include no sole-source contracts, and “an end to sweetheart contracts for political staffers.”

Budget open house draws hundreds BY CRYSTAL RHYNO ADVOCATE STAFF Using a mix of social and traditional media, the City of Red Deer pulled out all the stops to fill the 2015 budget open house on Wednesday. The four-hour open house saw 225 people file through the doors at Festival Hall. Last year’s event drew about 15 people. The open house gave residents a chance to have their say on where they would like their tax dollars to go in the next budget. In its push to put together

a list of community-driven amenities, the city invited residents to name their priorities. “In the future, I would love to see better public transit,” said Karli Kendall. “Personally it doesn’t quite work for me right now. I’ve tried it. It’s just not timely enough. I’d love to able to support more local businesses.” Kendall said the shopping is very heavy on the south end and she would like to see more opportunity to support local businesses in downtown Red Deer. She would like to see more arts and culture events in the city. Kendall came to meet city council
and to learn about roads, infrastructure, parks, culture and development in the city. She said she wanted to voice her vote on her priorities. Residents had face time with city staffers and council. Malcolm Inglis said he showed up to find out what happens at City Hall. Inglis said he hasn’t been interested in city politics but he is concerned because taxes are going up every year. He said the city is spending money on unnecessary things like bike lanes, traffic circles and under-used rinks.

Funding for a new seniors lodge in Rimbey has been announced — officially this time. The $13.3-million cash infusion has been the worst kept secret in town since April 15, when Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin controversially spilled the beans. Both the province and Rimoka Housing Foundation, which provides senior and social housing services in Ponoka County and the towns of Ponoka and Rimbey, criticized Anglin’s announcement as premature. On Wednesday, Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Greg Weadick was at Parkland Manor with Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins and other local representatives to make the official announcement. Parkland Manor will receive $11.2 million in joint provincial and federal funding ($7.7 million from the province and $5.6 million from the federal government), plus another $2.1 million from the province through the surplus earnings of the Alberta Social Housing Corp. Parkland Manor’s existing 63 units will be transformed into 37 larger units and 40 new units will be added.
