RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT
Baynes project
Deep Bay could get pub, trails, highway access etc. CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
After a six month hiatus, a Surrey-based development company hosted a three day invite-only meeting to discuss the future of their 341 acre property in the heart of Deep Bay. Though the vision is only in its infancy, Baynes Sound Investment president Amar Bains said the new project may include lodge accommodations, a pub style restaurant, affordable housing options, walking trails, lots of green space and a second access point to the highway — all ideas which came out of the May 2-4 I have never been to a m e e t i n g more civilized meeting in hosted at the 42 years and I’ve been very neighbouring involved in the community. VIU Deep Bay Marine Field MARG HEALEY Station. Bains said BSI “will only submit a development application (to the RDN) if we see overwhelming support from the community.” BSI is best known in the area for a failed development application which would have seen 200 single-family homes, a 292-unit RV park, retail/commercial space and 40 hectares of park space introduced to Deep Bay. The project was unanimously voted down by RDN board members last October as the proposal required significant changes to the official community plan and regional growth strategy. HIGHWAY CLOSED
Fatal accident in Nanoose Bay An accident on the highway in Nanoose Bay Sunday morning killed a motorcycle rider. Oceanside RCMP report that a 33-year-old man from the Lower Mainland, travelling southbound around 9 a.m., lost control in the Nanoose Flats area and was found deceased at the scene. Cst. Doug Pennington of the Central Island Traffic Services told CHECK News the man hit the concrete medi-
an and the only witness was the man’s girlfriend, who was driving behind him in an SUV and was too shaken up to give details. The pair was returning from Campbell River where the man had just purchased the bike. Oceanside Cst. Monika Terragni said in a news release that his name is being held pending family notification. Weather and visibility were good and Central Island Traffic Services and the
B.C. Coroners Service are continuing to investigate. With the southbound lanes closed, traffic was reduced to an alternating single lane for an extended period, with drivers reporting waits of up to two and a half hours and traffic being slowed for as long as six hours while police investigated the scene. Pennington said it was a good reminder to always drive carefully. — Candace Wu & Auren Ruvinsky
