ALERT team shows results SERIOUS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY DISRUPTED Contributed photo
BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF After a year investigating and arresting people involved in serious criminal activity in the city, Red Deer’s ALERT team has seized more than a quarter of a million dollars worth of drugs. The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team started on May 16, 2013, and within a week they had executed what Sgt. Gerald Ouellet called a “midlevel” bust at the time. About $60,000 in drugs were seized and four people were arrested. The ALERT body, known as the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Team in Red Deer, mostly targets drug-related crime. Among the arrests and seizures was that of two Calgary men who police allege attempted to move large volumes of cocaine in the Red Deer market. More than $100,000 worth of cocaine, methamphetamine and cannabis resin was seized.

Respect, safety for West Country RANGERS EXPECTING UP TO 40,000 VISITORS ON WEEKEND BY JOSH ALDRICH ADVOCATE STAFF With 40,000 people expected to ascend on the West Country for Victoria Day Long Weekend, local rangers are hoping they do so with respect and safety in mind. Their concerns range from wildfires to environmental impact, littering and bad decisions made by those enjoying themselves. “We’re welcoming many people to our back-

yard and ... we hope that they use it with respect,” said Barry Shellian, a wildfire ranger and information officer for the Rocky Wildfire Management Area. On Wednesday, Clearwater was upgraded to a high wildfire hazard rating, resulting from cured wild grass and high winds. However, Shellian says if the forecasted wet weather swings through over the next few days, that rating could drop to low by Saturday.

A body found south of Nordegg last week has been confirmed to be that of Anina Hundsdoerfer, an Edmonton woman who has been missing since March. RCMP search teams found Hundsdoerfer’s body after it was spotted by a grader operator on May 12, just off the road in a forested area several kilometres north of where her car had been discovered. Results from an autopsy identified the 32 year-old researcher on Thursday. Police said there was no signs of foul play and the death is considered to be non-criminal in nature at this time. The investigation is now closed and no further informa-
tion will be released, police said. Hundsdoerfer’s family thanks the public for phoning in tips and helping in the search. Hundsdoerfer, a forest entomologist who studied the mountain pine beetle, was last seen on March 22 in Edmonton. She was reported missing the next day by her roommate and her car was found on March 25, abandoned on the side of the Forestry Trunk Road, Hwy 734, south of Nordegg. RCMP searched the area using dogs, helicopters, snowmobiles and on foot, fighting heavy snow accumulation. A group of Hundsdoerfer’s friends put up several billboards in the area asking for anyone with more information on the missing woman to call police.
