He originally fell for the Clydesdale team 10 years ago, when he spent the afternoon touring their home barns in Oklahoma, and has since watched them in action at the Calgary Stampede, among other venues.

He was amazed at the “phenomenal” number of people who came through the gates just to see the heavy horses, and impressed by their remarkable relationship with their human fans.

“They’re so big and so gentle,” Stewart said.

“These horses are gentle giants.”

He’s had the good fortune to see the Clydesdales at a number of work-related functions; the team is the official mascot of Express Employment Professionals.

While the team frequents the Calgary Stampede, the horses only come to Canada “once or twice a year at most,” says Stewart. “They’ve never been here before.”

He’s tried to arrange for the team to come to the Cloverdale Rodeo for the past four years. After all, the company is one of the rodeo’s sponsors.

Last year’s business meeting at the Calgary Stampede provided Stewart with a chance to take his plea to his company president.

“I did a song and dance to the owner of Express. I kept on bugging him,” he said.

It must have been some performance, because Stewart got the good news in November that

the team would be coming to Cloverdale for the first time.

“It was a pipe dream.

We never thought we’d be able to get them here.”

Originally from

Saskatchewan, the horses are on the road more than 200 days a year, performing across North America, pulling a replica stagecoach or show delivery wagon and rais-

ing money for charities.

They were crowned world champions in sixhorse hitch at the 2013 Calgary Stampede, and claimed the 2012 world championship title for

horse hitch, and best cart, at the World Clydesdale Show in Milwaukee.

Astute royal watchers may remember the Clydesdales as equine escorts to Prince Wil-

liam and the Duchess of Cambridge at the 2011 Calgary Stampede.

The Clydesdales will perform at all five rodeo performances and there‘ll be ample opportunity to

meet them outside of the Stetson Bowl.

The Clydesdales will also visit the Cloverdale Chili Cook-off and take part in the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade.

Police urge caution amid property crime wave Three men arrested but more people associated with group expected to target high-end homes Black Press SURREY MOUNTIES are warning the

public about a wave of property crime spearheaded by a group believed to be responsible for numerous thefts throughout the region.

On March 20, 2014, investigators arrested three suspects following a series of residential break-and-enters in Surrey.

They are Surrey’s Stanley Calvin Price, 33, Wyatt James William, 28 of Kamloops, and Glen Allan Nelson, 31, of Surrey.

Price and William are charged with four counts of break and enter with intent to commit an offence, while Nelson faces the three counts of the same charge.

Police say the suspects are believed to be part of a larger group that is responsible for multiple residential break-andenters throughout the Metro Vancouver region.

Members of the group are usually select high-end residences believed to contain expensive jewelry and currency.

In addition, the group conducts a number of checks to ensure the homes are unoccupied prior to attempting a break-in.

“Our investigators have been very active monitoring individuals believed to be associated with this group and will continue to do so,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl.

Bert Paquet. “Due to the prolific nature of these crimes, however, we are reminding residents to be extra vigilant in securing their homes and properties.

This is also the time of year where we usually see a rise in residential

thefts as people leave more windows and garage doors open.

As a result we urge residents to review their home safety measures to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.”

by Sheila Reynolds A MAN found guilty two years ago of having two semi-automatic guns concealed in the back seat of a car in South Surrey has lost an appeal of his conviction.

Saekwan Lee was convicted in Surrey Provincial Court in February 2012 of two counts of possessing a prohibited weapon without a licence.

Lee appealed his conviction on the grounds that the trial judge misinterpreted the evidence.

It was January 2009 when police were called to 16 Avenue and 128 Street in response to a complaint about a loud noise and two vehicles in the area of the Ocean Park Shopping Centre. Because both vehicles left abruptly, an RCMP officer followed and attempted to pull them over. While one sped off, a red Ford Explorer stopped.

With a strong marijuana smell coming from the vehicle, he

asked the driver and Lee (the passenger) to exit. The Explorer was then searched and a plastic bag was found partially under the back seat. Inside were two semi-automatic pistols, both with their serial numbers ground off.

During forensics, seven identifiable fingerprints were found, five of which were Lee’s.

Three B.C. Appeal Court justices agreed with the trial judge that the evidence was sufficient.

“The evidence is that the weapons at issue were found in a bag in a car where the appellant was the passenger,” wrote Justice Richard Goepel in his April 24 decision, with Justices Elizabeth Bennett and Peter Lowry in agreement. “The bag had a number of the appellant’s fingerprints on it.

The appellant did not testify. In my view, it cannot be said that the conviction is unreasonable and not supported by the evidence.” sreynolds@surreyleader.com

The Express Clydesdales are a team of six heavy draft horses that will appear at a number of events during the 2014 Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair – and in the historic town centre – May 16 to 19.

Wherever they appear, the horses are sure to draw admirers of their size and beauty. They wear shoes the size of dinner plates, weigh 2,000 pounds, and stand 6’ or higher.

Prized for their rare colour – black, with a white blaze and legs, and black mane and tail – the Clydesdales are celebrities and champions.

Police urge caution amid property crime wave Three men arrested but more people associated with group expected to target high-end homes Black Press SURREY MOUNTIES are warning the

public about a wave of property crime spearheaded by a group believed to be responsible for numerous thefts throughout the region.

On March 20, 2014, investigators arrested three suspects following a series of residential break-and-enters in Surrey.

They are Surrey’s Stanley Calvin Price, 33, Wyatt James William, 28 of Kamloops, and Glen Allan Nelson, 31, of Surrey.

Price and William are charged with four counts of break and enter with intent to commit an offence, while Nelson faces the three counts of the same charge.

Police say the suspects are believed to be part of a larger group that is responsible for multiple residential break-andenters throughout the Metro Vancouver region.

Members of the group are usually select high-end residences believed to contain expensive jewelry and currency.

In addition, the group conducts a number of checks to ensure the homes are unoccupied prior to attempting a break-in.

“Our investigators have been very active monitoring individuals believed to be associated with this group and will continue to do so,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl.

Bert Paquet. “Due to the prolific nature of these crimes, however, we are reminding residents to be extra vigilant in securing their homes and properties.

This is also the time of year where we usually see a rise in residential

thefts as people leave more windows and garage doors open.

As a result we urge residents to review their home safety measures to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.”
