A woman was airlifted to hospital Tuesday, after being struck by a vehicle as she attempted to jaywalk across Fraser Highway near Willowbrook Shopping Centre. She suffered bruising and a broken pelvis, but is expected to recover. According to police the woman, who is pregnant, made it halfway across the busy road before stepping off the median and being struck by an eastbound car. The driver of the vehicle was shaken by the event, but uninjured. As they carried out their investigation, officers were surprised to see other people making similar attempts to cross the highway illegally.
The owners of six dogs are frantic after their furry family members were apparently stolen from a dog walker’s pickup truck parked at the Brookswood off-leash park on Tuesday afternoon. According to Langley RCMP, the dog walker had taken the six dogs to the popular off leash park in the 4400 block of 206 Street and then put them all in the back of her pickup truck, equipped with a canopy. She left them there so
she could use the washroom, said police. When she returned around 10 minutes later, the canopy had been unlatched and all six dogs were gone. This took place around 1:30 p.m. She searched the area for hours but wasn’t able to locate any of them, said Cpl. Holly Marks. Police attended as well and weren’t able to find any trace of the dogs. “The owners believe their dogs were taken as opposed to having escaped from the truck. Continued Page 4
Casino, Cactus Club seek new booze rules PUBLIC HEARING INTO LIQUOR EXPANSION SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 9 AT CITY HALL B REN D A AN D E R SO N Ti m e s Re po r t e r
If a pair of local businesses have their way, Langley residents and visitors, 19 and older, will be able to drink later and in more places than they are currently permitted. Cascades Casino and Cactus Club Café have both submitted proposals to the City of Langley to have their liquor licences expanded, with the restaurant seeking longer hours and the casino looking to add floor space, both inside and outside the building, where alcohol-
ic drinks may be served. Among the proposed changes to Cascades Casino are the construction of a new pub and restaurant — Match Eatery and Public House — on the building’s west side, where the poker room was formerly located. The restaurant and pub, with seating for 165 inside the building, would include a 135-seat patio and offer liquor service until 2 a.m. The existing Pinnacle Grille is slated to become a licensed, but family-friendly restaurant called The Buffet.

It will be closed off from the casino floor and accessible from the Coast Hotel lobby only. The casino is also seeking to allow patrons to take their drinks out onto the smoking patios, which they are not currently permitted to do. In its proposal, Gateway, which owns Cascades, stated that the purpose of the expansion is “to enhance patrons’ customer experience, while in our facility, and in no way is to promote increased alcohol consumption or sales.” A report by City staff on the proposed
changes indicate that the expansion of liquor service at the casino is in keeping with the intensity of activity proposed for the City’s ‘Entertainment District.’ “The proposed outdoor patios are sufficiently removed from residential developments and no nuisance impacts are anticipated for area residents,” it reads. The report also states that the high level of on-site security provided for the casino serves to reduce crime and public safety concerns. Continued Page 4
