Flooding hard to predict ALBERTA ENVIRONMENT REGIONAL MANGER SAYS IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT IF THERE WILL BE ENOUGH RAIN TO CAUSE FLOODING IN CENTRAL ALBERTA BY PAUL COWLEY ADVOCATE STAFF DICKSON DAM — Gleniffer Reservoir is a shadow of its usual self right now. The water level has dropped so low large stretches of gravel bottom are exposed. There’s a good reason that water levels are a good two metres lower than this time last year, said Rick Friedl, a regional manager with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. “This year the snow pack levels that we have upstream of the Dickson Dam are fairly high, so you’ll see the reservoir a little bit lower,” said Friedl, at a Wednesday open house at the dam 20 km west of Innisfail. The snow pack measured at Limestone Ridge, west of Caroline, is 360 mm of water equivalent, far above the normal range of 160 mm to 230 mm. That doesn’t mean flooding is on the way. Snow melt alone is rarely enough to cause floods, said Friedl. “We need to have precipitation of significant amounts to actually cause a flood.” Friedl said it’s “impossible to say” if those rains will come this year as they did last June. “You can’t really forecast that. “That’s just like weather forecasting a month or two or three weeks from now. You just can’t do that.” Dam operators can’t usually count on much more than a couple of days warning that potential flood volumes of water are coming. A number of factors dictate how much water to let flow through the dam,

RCMP looking for owner of ‘treasured vehicle’

BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF Human remains have been found south of Nordegg, near where a missing Edmonton woman’s car was found earlier this year. Rocky Mountain House RCMP Sgt. Bill Laidlaw said a grader operator reported seeing the remains near the Forestry Trunk Road, Hwy 734, south of Nordegg on Friday. Police conducted a search on Friday and found human remains. The location of the discovery is close to where ’s car was last found. The 32-year-old woman was last seen in Edmonton in March. Laidlaw said right now the remains are linked to Hundsdoerfer by geography only and they have not officially identified the remains as hers. An autopsy on the remains is scheduled for Thursday. Hundsdoerfer was last seen on Saturday, March 22, near her office at 99th Avenue and 108th Street in Edmonton, between 1 and 3 p.m. The forest entomologist studied mountain pine beetle. On March 23, she was reported missing by her roommate. Her vehicle, a blue Toyota Echo, was found abandoned on March 25 at the side of the road on the Forestry Trunk Road about 25 km north of the North Fork Road Junction, Hwy 752. The area where the car was found was about an hour from Rocky Mountain House and about 60 km south of Nordegg on the trunk road.

tioned officials about the low water levels that won’t allow the resort’s water intake to draw properly. If the water was only a metre higher, the resort could pump water and wouldn’t have to truck it in. Such low water levels are also hard on fisheries, he said.

Edmonton’s Anina Hundsdoerfer has been missing since March. On Friday, a grader operator found human remains south of Nordegg near where the missing woman’s car was found earlier this year. Police could not confirm the identity of the body.

An unusual 1960s British car is seemingly without an owner, and Red Deer RCMP are scratching their heads trying to find out who owns the “almost certainly treasured vehicle.” On May 4, RCMP found and towed an Austin Cambridge from the Husky gas bar downtown. Since then, police have tried to find the rightful owner, but have been unsuccessful. The Austin Cambridge is possibly an A60 model, which were produced between 1961 and 1969. It is white in colour with a red interior and is in good condition. “In the car world something that unusual grabs attention. It was like having something frozen in time. It was in remarkably good shape,” said Jim Sutherland, a local freelance writer who specializes in collector cars. Red Deer Staff Sgt. Andrew Shepherd said neither the car’s licence plate nor vehicle identification number yielded any results. “We’re wondering why someone would move it there and walk away from it,” said Shepherd. According to Hagerty Insurance, a classic car valuation provider, the car would be worth about $9,500.
