Creston player chosen in WHL draft

Society’s tool library helps out small-scale farmers

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Goaltender Matt Armitage has become the first Creston player to be selected in the Western Hockey League draft. Armitage, 14, was chosen by the Spokane Chiefs in the fourth round of the draft held May 1. For the past year he has been attending Edge School for Athletes in Calgary, Alta., which offers education and athletics programs for many sports. His mother, Kim, and sister, Maya, moved to Calgary last year so Matt could accept a scholarship to attend Edge School. “I’ve basically been commuting for the last year,” said Matt’s father, Dave, a Columbia Brewery employee, who was also a goaltender and coach in the Creston Valley minor hockey program. “Matt was recruited by a few teams and his second year of bantam hockey was crucial for him to progress,” Dave said. “At 14, we decided he was too young to send away, so we moved our family to Calgary.” The proud dad says his son has had an exceptional year playing in a high level program. Matt had 23 wins and 13 losses in 2013-2014, putting up a 2.72 goalsagainst average and a 9.2 save percentage. He had five shutouts and was named the game’s most valuable player 11 times. BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor The word “library” brings to mind shelves of books, magazines and perhaps movies, but the one run by the Kootenay Local Agriculture Society (KLAS) is a bit different — it offers the rental of small-scale farming tools to the region’s farmers. “People don’t know this scale of equipment exists,” said Nigel Francis, who is co-ordinating the Creston library for the non-profit KLAS. “You can’t borrow it from your neighbour.” Part of the library’s purpose is to support beginning farmers, like Francis, with tool caches in Creston, Kaslo, Castlegar and Nelson. The key item in the library is an Italianmade BCS 853 walking tractor, which has a 13-horsepower engine and two wheels. A variety of implements can be attached, including a tiller, rotary plow and flail mower, and the Creston Valley library also offers a power harrow and fruit press/dehydrator. For KLAS members, the cost is $50 per day for the tractor and one implement. See TOOL, page 5 Creston Valley farmer Nigel Francis demonstrates the use of a BCS 853 walking tractor. Brian Lawrence
