Building with nature Eagle View elementary Grade 5 students and Green Team members Jenna Peterson, left, Hailey Lembcke, Mary Nguyen and Megan Duraan gather around a repurposed stump in a forested area next to the school in View Royal. Students helped transform the previously wild area with native plantings and the spreading of mulch into a picturesque outdoor gathering place and play area. See story page A20.

Multicoloured leafy greens, red currants or hazelnuts, Carolyn Herriot encourages residents to get foodie in their gardens. A featured speaker at Victoriaâs largest building, renovation and dĂŠcor show, Herriot will delve into edible gardening during the Victoria Spring Home Expo at West Shore Parks and Recreation, today through Sunday. âMy focus for right now is a lot of people are expressing interest in growing more food in their gardens. Weâre seeing a switch from growing ornamentals to growing edibles,â said the three-time author. âYou donât have to rip your garden out, you can just introduce plants you can eat.â Her books take a journey through the garden in much the way her presentations will: A Year on the Garden Path â a 52-week Organic Gardening Guide, The Zero Mile Diet â A Yearround Guide to Growing Organic Food, and a companion book, The Zero-Mile Diet Cookbook â Seasonal Recipes for Delicious Homegrown Food. Saturday she shares with show-goers how to âHave Your Garden and Eat It Too!â and introduces them to âornamental edibles.â âThere are lots of lovely plants that people have forgotten about because we havenât grown them in so long. The bonus is you can enjoy the feature and you can eat it as well,â she says. âThey forget about grain, they can grow nuts and berries and fruits, leafy greens. ⌠I think it adds more colour to our world and it adds a lot more diversity thatâs for sure. And I think itâs the most responsible thing to do.â That leads to her second talk, immediately following the first, âThe Zero-Mile Kitchen From Garden to Table.â âMy focus is about nutrition ⌠to introduce new foods into the kitchen and diet,â she said. âItâs important to know, when youâre growing

Thereâs a huge problem right now because a lot of people donât know how to cook.â With ongoing concerns over food security, and uncertainty with drought plaguing produce provider California, sheâll connect the dots to local food. âThis is a really bad time for us not to know how to grow food to feed ourselves,â she said. âItâs to inspire. Itâs not to frighten people ⌠weâve just forgotten.â Herriotâs first talk is tomorrow (April 26) from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. The second goes 3:15 to 4 p.m. The 29th annual Home Expo takes place in the three rinks at West Shore Parks and Recreation, 1767 Island Hwy.
