Thaw causes freezing
Warming temps causing water line problems; City crews backed up with calls for assistance C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca
The City of Kimberley is asking residents to keep an eye on their water lines. If you have a history of your water service line freezing, or if you are noticing a reduced water flow in your home, leave one tap running cold water (stream should be size of a pencil). This will prevent your lines from freezing. You will need to keep the
water running 24/7 until midApril to avoid refreezing. “We are seeing an increase in residents experiencing frozen water service lines,” said Mayor Ron McRae. “City crews are getting backed up with requests for assistance.” The problems have been increasing for the past three weeks to a month, ever since the last bout of cold weather, McRae says. “It is related to that cold weather. As temperatures warm up there is an increase in the frost depth in the ground — the frost retreats further into the ground. We are seeing an increase in frozen lines in Marysville, which is unusual.” See WATER, page 3

As we spring forward into Daylight Saving Time this weekend (Sunday 2 a.m.), please take a moment to check your smoke detector batteries. That’s a message from Fire Chiefs across Canada, including Kimberley’s Fire Chief Al Collinson. “Every home has to have a smoke detector,” Collinson said. “It’s a requirement now

and it’s a requirement for a good reason.” But your smoke detector does you no good if the batteries are dead or if it is too old. Collinson says that smoke detectors should be replaced after ten years. The Kimberley Fire Department has just finished a very successful Kidde Canada program which provided 50 new smoke detectors to Kimberley seniors. Any senior who had some doubts about their smoke detector simply called the Fire Department and a member went to their home and checked it out, installing a new one if required.
