n 1954, a young girl from Kelowna went missing after wandering away from her family’s campsite. The ensuing search and successful rescue was enough to convince a group of local people to form an organization to deal with such emergencies. The seeds were planted for what is known today as the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue Society. With 52 volunteer members, COSAR is the second largest group of its kind in B.C., and performs dozens of emergency search and rescue operations each year in the region. In today’s Capital News, Warren Henderson looks at the integral role COSAR plays in the safety of people in the community. See story page A3
