Writing to royalty By Amy Reinitz

For 28 years, Izzy McQueen has been dutifully acting on behalf of Santa. Every year she receives letters for Santa from Kamloops school children and does her part to spread Christmas cheer. Along with a few helpers, this year McQueen responded to 2,533 letters. This past Christmas season, McQueen decided to write a letter of her own.

A fan of the Royal Family, McQueen decided when Prince George was born, she would send a letter to Buckingham Palace. After retrieving the address from MP Cathy McLeod’s office, McQueen sent her letter. “I sent a picture of myself, and I said I had done the Santa letters for 28 years,” McQueen said. She recently received a reply to her letter, which included

a picture of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George. It also included a note thanking McQueen for her letter, and wishing her a warm and Happy New Year. McQueen was delighted with the response she received. “I was quite surprised. Everybody said ‘you’ll probably get a letter,’ and I was pleased that I did because it was really special. This makes

Christmas for me.” McQueen gladly shows off her picture and letter, and even brought it to a Blazers game after her friends requested seeing it. She now plans on framing her memento next to a decorative plate she has commemorating the wedding of the Duke and Duchess. When asked if she plans to continue writing letters to the Royal family, McQueen did not hesitate for a second. “I will! So help me I’m going to send them one every year,” she said. Now as for Santa’s letters, she has no plans on slowing down and is already planning a timeline for this year’s letter writing. With any luck, McQueen will continue receiving both kinds of letters for many years to come. *Did you know the Queen sends congratulatory messages for birthdays when you turn 100, 105, and every year thereafter? You can also receive anniversary congratulations on your 60th, 70th, and 75th anniversaries, and every year thereafter. Applications can be printed out from the Governor-Generals website (www.gg.ca), or from Cathy McLeod’s office.
