Duncan 250.737.1508 • AFDFuels.ca North Cowichan South End fire fighters were busy on Tuesday. Just as they just finished responding to a chimney fire at 6:30 p.m., the were immediately called out to the 1300 block of Tzouhalem Road to deal with this fully involved barn fire at 7 p.m.

Due to the lack of water supply in the area, Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue was called for mutual aid with its tender.

Firefighters stayed on scene for almost four hours. There were no injuries in the incident.

any residents of Parkland Place returned to their homes Tuesday night following Sunday’s huge fire at the Dobson Road apartment complex.

But people living in about 22 of the 140 units in the complex were still displaced due to smoke and water damage.

“Those that are out may be out for weeks and maybe months,’’ said Emergency Social Services manager Sybille Sanderson.

The Emergency Reception Centre temporary headquarters at the Island Savings Centre to house residents in need of accommodation have been removed. Those who can’t return to their homes are either staying in hotels or with family or friends.

“We have made all the arrangements through Saturday morning,’’ said Sanderson. “On Friday at one o’clock, we will be meeting with them at the Island Savings Centre. Maybe more of them can go home.’’

For those in the most heavily damaged units, “some of them have already been talking about they’ve been out looking for another place to live,’’ said Sanderson.

Most of the tenants in the damaged section have been back to assess their situations.

“They had an opportunity to see, ‘what’s my apartment look like?’’’ said Sanderson. “They’ve been able to go

in and get things out of their suites but they’re not able to stay there.’’

For the remaining people still being assisted, “now we need to look at options,’’ Sanderson said. B.C. Housing personnel is involved to offer help.

Duncan Fire Department chief Mike McKinlay said the units on the third and fourth floor at the south end remain blocked just outside the firewall. Units have been locked until insurance company representatives can get in to take a look. After that, it’s on to the investigation.

“Monday, we’ll get in there and tear it all apart and see if we can deter-

mine what caused it,’’ said McKinlay.

Meanwhile, resident Gerry Masuda was impressed with the handling of the crisis by ERC team leader John Elzinga and his staff composed of Cowichan Valley Regional District, City of Duncan and Municipality of North Cowichan personnel plus Island Savings Centre employees.

“All acted with calm professional competence with reassuring smiles,’’ Masuda wrote in a letter to the News Leader Pictorial. “I was impressed by the positive attitude of those whose apartments suffered damage from the fire. I was impressed by the relatives and friends who provided shelter

but I was especially impressed by the Duncanites who came to the ERC and invited complete strangers into their homes.’’

Masuda noted he spent two nights sleeping on an air mattress at the ERC. He was surprised only 25 to 30 mattresses were set up for the temporarily homeless.

However, “this small number was adequate to meet our needs and was based on previous emergencies where Duncanites rallied to help those in need,’’ he pointed out.

Masuda’s unit was at the north end and not damaged so he returned to his home Tuesday night. But everyone was displaced for at least the two nights with power, heat and water cut off because of the fire.

Cowichan Theatre improvements funded by $80,000 grant

A Canadian Heritage Grant of $79,195 from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund has been awarded to the Cowichan Theatre.

This is the first time the Cowichan Theatre has submitted an application for this grant. A highly competitive national program, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund fields requests from theatres across the country plus non-profit arts and heritage organi-

zations, provincial/territorial governments, municipal and regional governments, as well as First Nations and Inuit equivalent governments.

“I am so pleased the application was approved, especially considering the intense competition for these funds,” said Kirsten Schrader, manager of the Arts and Culture Division, and manager of the Cowichan Theatre, in a press release.

The projects covered include safety renovations to the loading dock of the Island Savings Centre, completion of the theatre fly system, and a stagelevel washroom.

Way up, to Somenos Marsh’s new viewing platform which could be built to complete the marsh society’s open-air classroom.

Pending a successful fundraising campaign, the tower will finish the OAC wildlife-viewing infrastructure plan initiated by the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society several years ago.

The viewing tower will be designed and built by Cowichan’s Macdonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. The contractor also refurbished the valley’s Kinsol Trestle, and built Cowichan Bay’s new Maritime Centre addition and wildlife viewing tower.

The volunteer-built marsh tower will have a similar design as the bay’s tower. The platform floor will rise about 21 feet, and measure 12 square feet to hold group presentations.

It will provide a 360-degree view of the Somenos Marsh Conservation Area, enabling visitors to view wildlife on Somenos Lake to the northeast.

Interpretive, bilingual (English and Hul’qumi’num) signage will focus on fish habitat and the marsh’s importance in salmon-life cycles.

The SMWS has been actively restoring the classroom site since 1989 when the property was a derelict commercial site with a large parking lot.

“The OAC now shows

no sign of its commercial past, and has now become one of the more popular walking and wildlife viewing sites close to Duncan’s urban core,” the society’s release reads.

Total cost of the platform is estimated at close to $50,000.

The society has already earmarked $5,000 from its existing reserves and hopes to raise the rest through grants, fundraisers and donations.

vernight and continued rain scrubbed health warnings and burning bans in a 15-kilometre zone around Duncan, provincial agents said Wednesday.

The environment ministry and Island Health ended their airquality advisory that was in effect Monday to Wednesday.

Open burning may now be done without a permit, or ministry approval, if the fire follows the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation, Environment Management Act, and any local (municipal, regional) restrictions, the ministry’s release reads.

Health warnings and burning bans were issued for Jan. 27 to 29 in a 15-kilometre zone around Duncan.

Open-burning restrictions during that time meant no new fires could be started, and no additional material added to existing fires.

The environment ministry and Island Health continued the Air Quality Advisory — issued Monday — for Duncan and vicinity due to high concentrations of fine particulates.

Folks with chronic medical conditions were recommended to curb strenuous exercise while the advisory was in effect.

Staying indoors and in airconditioned spaces helped reduce fine-particulate exposure, Victoria says.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly, and those with diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

Tips to reduce health risks include avoiding roads with heavy traffic, and areas with wood smoke; controlling medical conditions such as asthma, chronic respiratory disease and heart failure. If symptoms continue to be bothersome, seek medical help.

Folks with medical conditions should stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and reduce indoor pollution such as smoking, vacuuming and wood-stove use.

orth Cowichan may have already made a decision to develop 20% of Echo Heights forest in Chemainus.

But no one expects the debate about the municipal forestland — now ongoing for nearly a decade — to end any time soon.

The Chemainus Residents Association says council has failed to keep the faith with the residents of Chemainus.

“We’ve been telling council for eight years that we don’t want to see development on the forest,” said Bernie Jones, chairman of the association. “We’ve submitted petitions with over 1,600 names on them, we conducted an analysis where 92% of correspondence said to save it all ... This doesn’t make sense.

“It’s a very special area. It sees Coastal Douglas fir trees grow, and they only grow on B.C.’s coast,” he said. “There’s only a small number of areas that have them now and they need to be protected so we don’t lose them.”

North Cowichan plans to develop a portion of the forest that was disturbed by development in the 1990s, as well as a little more. North Cowichan Councillor John Koury supports the decision, saying profits from the development of the land will benefit the entire community.

Koury called the plan proper asset management.

“Well-planned public investments should stimulate the private sector to also invest, creating jobs and opportunity, something we really need,” he wrote.

“The CRA is mounting an absolute-zero development campaign.

I’m not convinced this is a broadly supported view and it certainly does not serve the best interest of Chemainus, We need to have the courage not only to draw defendable conclusions but allow our well-trained staff to follow through with them.”

North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure — along with Councillor Kate Marsh — voted against the plan.

But now that it has been approved, Lefebure has hopes the move will be a positive thing for all.

The Chemainus Residents Association wants council to save all of Echo Heights.

“I was not interested in the 20 % and subdivision model, but I was still willing to talk about developing the 15% of the forest that was previously disturbed. However, council has made its decision so now my job is to make it the best we can make it,” said the mayor.

“We’ve told staff we want to see something innovative and not just your business-as-usual subdivision,” he said. “Staff will bring back their proposed plan to council and we will either adopt it, ask for more work to be done, or reject it.

“Re-zoning would see a public process, and we would likely have an information meeting first. Then we’ll have a formal public hearing before council decides.”

Jones wonders why council hasn’t listened to the public already.

“We cannot understand how council can continue to ignore the wishes of such a large part of the community regarding this impor-

tant issue. In recent weeks we have been told that, if these lands are not developed at a profit to the municipality, then promised improvements to Chemainus might not be forthcoming,” wrote Jones.

“If this is indeed the case we cannot help wondering why these plans and proposals, both here in Chemainus and elsewhere in North Cowichan, were made in the first place if financing for them depended on such tenuous and unacceptable terms.”

Lefebure chose to approach that scenario from the opposite end.

“The reality is we pay for community development projects via a variety of sources. That can be through grants, taxes or municipally-owned land.

“If there’s more money from generating the sale of land, then there’s more money for projects, but council still has the ultimate decision.”

he Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association executive is under temporary suspension pending an investigation being conducted by the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association.

“The main crux of what we’re investigating right now is irregularities perceived to have occurred during an executive committee meeting on Jan. 13,’’ said VIAHA president Jim Humphrey, a Lake Cowichan businessman. “It’s being dealt with as expediently and professionally as possible.’’

Humphrey said five interviews were being conducted Thursday, four more Friday and another two on the weekend to reach a decision: either reinstate the executive or reconvene the Jan. 13 meeting to address the alleged irregularities.

Humphrey added rumours are running rampant and VIAHA intended to stress the need for everyone to be patient.’

“We’re in the process of putting out a memo. It’ll go out to every Cowichan Valley member on the weekend.’’

The situation arose after other member associations claimed Cowichan Valley had brought discredit to the VIAHA. Humphrey said he was not at liberty to get into details on the advice of VIAHA’s lawyer.

rant announcements are the glue that keeps our social and physical infrastructure together, and gets governments re-elected.

So it is hardly unusual for community newspaper readers to stumble across a grant story on a semi-regular basis.

It’s possible that some may take grants for granted.

That is why it is necessary to pay special attention to the recent $125,000 Aviva Community Fund grant handed to the school community at Ecole Good to see Mount Prevost.

This is not some annual slush fund hard work from a provincial or federal ministry rewarded doled out to a majority of community service organizations and municipal governments in order to help provide the facilities and services that taxpayers want in their communities.

And it is not something decided on with any ulterior motives of “fairness” or political brownie points.

The Aviva grant is awarded based on three factors: merit, support (as measured by internet voting) and chances of success.

An organization is not awarded such a grant unless it clearly demonstrates that not only is the project necessary, it also has the firm commitment of a community behind it dedicated to turn it into reality.

And it also had to beat out hundreds of other similar projects being put forth by similarly dedicated communities.

This is a grant that is tough to get. This is a grant that is earned.

The Ecole Mount Prevost community deserves a lot of credit for this, as does the surrounding neighbourhood.

We can’t wait to see the community playground take shape.

anuary marks my 10th year at the Nanaimo News Bulletin.

It doesn’t feel like a decade has passed. I don’t feel that much wiser than the wide-eyed (all right, deer caught in headlights) 23-year-old who showed up to work on a dark, rainy Tuesday morning for the first time in 2004.

Even after nearly two years working in the Comox Valley, it was still a steep learning curve every day I walked into work. Moving to a new city for the third time in six years was especially hard – those first six months didn’t have a day where I didn’t think I should pack up and go home.

So what kept me here? The people, of course.

The train of thought is long and convoluted so I’ll save the trip, but I dug up an old article about a whistle-stop on Stephen Harper’s campaign trail in 2005 — before he was elected

in a minority government. Nine years on and the rhetoric is still the same.

When people ask about my job, about the famous people I’ve interviewed, I’m often at a loss as to what to say. Talking about the last city council meeting can make even the most dogged city hall watcher’s eyes glaze over.

But looking back, it’s pretty cool that I interviewed our prime minister — often the National Press Gallery can’t even boast that.

I also interviewed Justin Trudeau before he was famous. He was boosting the Katimavik program at Malaspina University-College and I couldn’t get over how much he looked like his mom and sounded like his dad.

I wrote about tragedy, and how a family lost its daughter to a Tylenol overdose. I sat through a sentencing hearing for a man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of his wife as his mother and daughter cried on opposite sides of the courtroom.

I remember my heart pounding as I dialed the number for Henry Rollins, the former

We’ve yet to hear any significant lobby standing up and asking North Cowichan to sacrifice that chunk of land to pay for development in Chemainus.

We’ve heard many, many people asking that all that land be set aside and protected.

The newsroom giggled as I shouted into the phone while interviewing the 96-year-old Honeyboy Edwards, the last of the original Delta blues players. And they looked quizzical as I discussed marijuana cultivation and kittens with The Trailer Park Boys.

I got to meet hockey legend Howie Meeker, interview the boys from Big Sugar and Wide Mouth Mason multiple times, as well as one of my childhood heroes Bif Naked, whose tattoos and black hair made me realize there’s more to the world than the Gap uniform.

Reporting has its challenges, like the feeling of walking into work with an acid stomach because you knew the day’s front page story was going to garner some outraged phone calls. Or knowing that because of time, space

and budget constraints you could’ve done a better job.

It’s a job unlike any other and the only people who truly understand you are those who also worked in the trenches. People who leave, miss it, which is why so many of us in the industry were gutted when the Kamloops Daily News closed without warning this month.

The names might change and the stories might stay the same, but at the end of the day it’s the people who make the difference.

It’s the people who convinced me to stay.

And now when I talk about “going home,” it’s to the Harbour City that I’m referring.

Dear editor I was one of the helpers who organized the last-minute protest against Stephen Harper and his destructive Conservative government. I called all my Save Shawnigan Lake Water people to show up with our signs.

Peter Nix was very respectful. Me, not so much. I yelled shame at the suits as they strolled past us. We never stopped anyone from going in, we just crossed the street and held up traffic. What a big inconvenience for the SUVs and Mercedes drivers. I am fighting to save their water and they only see money. You can’t drink money. We are not a fringe group. We are a community being terrorized by our federal and provincial governments who want to turn the mountain above Shawnigan Lake and Sooke Lake into a toxic dumpsite that will inevitably poison our water. I will continue to speak or yell for Shawnigan whenever I have the chance.

ike most small forestry companies in the Cowichan Valley, the Hillcrest Lumber Company at Mesachie Lake is long gone.

But in January 1962 it employed close to 100 men in its logging operations — and most were off the job in what the company called an illegal strike. Two years earlier, the company’s mill men had accepted their free transportation from Duncan to work in Mesachie had come to an end.

However, when the logging crew’s free bus rides were cancelled Jan. 2, the men refused to make alternative arrangements. The company regarded the dispute as a strike: the men were withholding their labour when their jobs were open to them. The company had the right to discontinue free bus transportation at any time, they said. Meanwhile, officials of the men’s union, Local 1-80 of the IWA, said the bus was a condition of employment and wished to negotiate.

“The company has supplied free transportation for these employees for a period of 20 years, fully aware that those employees were establishing homes in the Duncan and Lake Cowichan communities,” the union wrote in a statement to the press. “It is a reduction in take-home pay and amounts to a loss in wages.”

Predictions of Hybrid extinction are premature

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently equated hybrid vehicles to early amphibians that hopped out of the oceans, learned to survive on land and eventually disappeared.

Ironically, if the electric vehicle (EV) evolved in a similar way, Tesla (an exclusively EV company) wouldn’t exist right now and this would probably be in a vibrant Hybrid Age!

How far depends primarily on the capacity (size) of its storage battery, but also on the drive system, the terrain and weather conditions and how the PHEV is driven.

Lugging around a bigger battery obviously increases the weight of a PHEV and it takes up either passenger cabin or more likely trunk cargo space. The latest lithium-ion battery packs are lighter and more compact, but the space sacrifice is something that a prospective owner must be willing to live with.

Hybrid owner feedback is generally very positive and the fuel savings can be substantial. That said, you generally pay a premium for this technology, but that gap is rapidly narrowing. Last year, GM slashed $5,000 off the price of its popular Chevrolet Volt, the best selling PHEV on the market. While GM mar-

The Toyota Sienna has evolved and adapted to a changing market continuously since its introduction in 1998.

Looks: The Sienna van has a very familiar front end. Look no further than the Toyota Venza where it not only shares the same face but also the same platform. In fact, this platform is used in the Highlander, RAV4, and Camry.

This new look is attracting buyers that in the past would not see themselves driving a minivan. When I drove it, I felt as if I was driving a crossover, lots of room and power.

I like the LED taillights, very bright and easy to see. The optional power sliding doors have retractable windows and are larger making it easier for getting in and out. They are controlled by a push of a button on the key fob.

In The Cab: There is plenty of leg room for the driver and front passenger. Unlike previous Sienna vans where the driver’s seat would only go back so far and taller people ended up with their knees up around the steering wheel.

This version has full adjustability with a longer and wider seat cushion that can make drivers of any size comfortable. The second row has captain’s chairs that have a one touch walk-in feature and the third row is a 60/40 split one-touch split and stow mechanism that folds seats flat for storage.

The XLE Limited comes with a multi-panel moon roof that features two independently controlled sunroofs. The front is a tilt and slide, while the rear just slides.

Safety first: There are seven standard airbags, including

dual stage front and seat mounted side airbags for driver and front passenger, plus a new driver side knee airbag. Side curtain airbags covers the entire length of the van.

Power: Power is provided by a 3.5 Litre V6, aluminum block, with 266 horsepower and 245 lb ft of torque. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with lock up torque convertor and a transmission cooler. Allwheel drive models include Bridgestone run flat tires.

Most minivans tend to have a lot of body motion and this one did not. Power was there to pass and with the driver seat further back it felt more relaxing. The area behind the third row has a large space for the seats to fold into and when the seats are up, it provides tons of space for storage.

Verdict: I like the improved styling in this vehicle and the roomy interior. Although there is enough power to move this vehicle along very well, I did notice the transmission constantly shifting down looking for more power when fully loaded with 7 passengers.

hybrid vehicles continues to grow, barring a sudden spike in the price of oil/ gasoline, a meteoric rise in the popularity of alternatives to the old reliable gas engine vehicle is unlikely. Then again, who knows what the future, or the next twist in evolution, will bring. of the front door. The broadset kidney grille reaches out and touches the front headlights, making its head-on appearance bold and seamless.

To me, I find the overall looks to be understated but not necessarily awe-inspiring. My mind wasn’t blown when I first laid eyes on it.

Then again, looks aren’t everything.

If functionality is what you’re after, the X5 has plenty of that.

Ballet reaches Shakespearean heights

Review: Ballet Jörgen’s vivid version of bard’s timeless tragedy delivers symbolism of peace and love over hate and revenge News Leader Pictorial

W

ithout a word, Ballet Jörgen’s superb Romeo and Juliet became a silent movie of Shakespearean proportions in the Cowichan Theatre Saturday.

The bard’s timelessly tragic messages about hope, love and peace trumping hate, death and revenge were seamlessly staged amid simple, yet effective sets.

Missing was an apparent method of death: Romeo, then Juliet, died without seeming use of poison or a dagger.

Still, Jörgen’s masterful motion and subtle silence was an exemplary

tale worthy of the bard’s applause.

Romeo and Juliet is no stranger to Cowichanians.

The beloved love story has been presented in refreshingly different versions in recent years by the Shawnigan Players and Island Oak High School.

What made Jörgen’s work stand out was expression and motion replacing all-important dialogue that’s key to the bard’s play.

This time, dancers used body language, some comedy, and facial looks to silently tell us the complex story later seen in West Side Story and other works.

Romeo (Hiroto Saito) and Juliet (Saniya Abilmajineva) effectively played the star-crossed lovers in simple costumes, compared to lav-

ish clothes worn by other characters.

The muscular cast reflected sad retribution between Romeo’s Montague family versus Juliet’s Capulet clan.

Conflict was reminiscent of America’s legendarily harsh Hatfields and McCoys feud, with the confused couple caught in a crossfire of sword work.

Their happy, fledgling romance contrasted perfectly with the deadly bile swirling around them.

The lovers’ untimely, needless deaths — through well-meaning, yet bad, communication — was unscored by the beauty of Ballet Jörgen’s production.

Trumpeter and vocalist Johnny Summers and pianist Chris Andrews have been called two of Canada’s hottest young jazz artists, Between performing tunes off their latest award winning album, Piano Sessions Vol. 1, Summers will be sharing some cutting edge trumpet techniques he has learned from some of the world’s jazz greats Sunday in Crofton.

PHILLIPS, Miles Alexander passed away suddenly as the result of a motor vehicle accident on Thursday January 23, 2014.

Born in Toronto, Ontario on October 27, 1965.

Lovingly remembered by his wife Angela Marston, their children Jasmin and Autumn, his Uncle Richard and Kathy, and his cousins Colin, Andy and Mark. He will be missed by his mother-in-law, Jane Marston, father-in-law, David Marston, and many sisterin-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Miles was known for his kind loving heart radiant smile and always believing and seeing the best in people.

Mark Maxwell (Max) 1958-2014 Mark Maxwell loved the outdoors.

Nothing made him happier than having a brisk breeze at his back while he windsurfed, or having the sun on his brow as he hiked.

As an avid rock climber, diver and cyclist he lived for adventure and had a special appreciation of nature. Seeking the ultimate outdoor experience often took him beyond our provincial boundaries to locations such as Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Yukon.

Mark, or Max, as his friends knew him, grew up in Whiterock and went on to live in many different locations throughout British Columbia. His vocation as a Diamond Driller/Blaster allowed him to spend his non-recreational time outdoors as well. He loved the precision involved in blasting and plied his skills in Tahsis, Port Hardy, Campbell River, Victoria and other locations throughout the province.

Along the way he developed many relationships both through work and of course through outdoor recreation.

When not in the outdoors Max enjoyed listening to CBC radio, and always thoughtful, never hesitated to call or send letters to express his point of view.

In his mid-forties, after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Max adapted his love of the outdoors to include y-ďŹ shing and gardening, in Squamish, and later in Duncan, where he spent the ďŹ nal years of his life. MS is a horrible disease that forced Max to let go of so many of the things that he loved in life. But it seemed that every time he let go of part of his former self he was able to replace it with something new. For years he faced the disease head on with courage and dignity. Never one to give up he sought experimental treatments outside of Canada and always remained open and positive right up until the end.

The ďŹ nal two years of his life were spent in Sunridge long-term care facility in Duncan where he formed the last meaningful relationships in his life. His infectious smile, and the mischievous glint in his eyes endeared him to the staff there. He was always a bit of a ladies man. Max died on Saturday January 25th at the far to young age of 56.

We will miss him. “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you�.

ELDRIDGE Roy Edwin Dec 1935 - Jan 2014 It is with sadness we announce the death of Roy Eldridge. Born in Westbury, NY in 1935. Roy enlisted in the US Air Force and as officer was transferred to Prince George, BC where he met Carol, his soul mate and wife of over 50 years.

Roy and Carol raised their 3 children in Prince Rupert before settling in Duncan in 1993. Roy enjoyed a long career as a Realtor as well as owner of drycleaning plants in Duncan, Prince Rupert and Kitimat. Roy’s passion in life was his family and he provided them with a life time worth of funny memories.

Roy’s positive outlook and unique sense of humour has touched many people throughout BC. Predeceased by his dog, Harry. Survived by his wife Carol and children Norman (Lyra), Shae (Doug), and Marne (Peter) and his beloved grandchildren Mikki, Brock, Scott, Curtis, Shannon and Thomas. DAVIE, Lewis Peter Feb 19, 1937 - Jan 14, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lewis Peter Davie, born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is survived by his loving wife, Marjory, daughter Patricia (aka Trish), son Lewis and granddaughters Alicia & Adriana; sisters (nee Davie) Norah Bain, Hazel Davie, Jean Stuart & Helen Lang. Lewis is predeceased by sister Olive Matthew.

Lewis worked for Grampian Television as an Electronics mechanic in Scotland and was also in the Air Force, deployed to Akrotiri, Cypress for 2 years as part of his National Service. Lewis met the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Marjory Burnett. After they were married, Lewis and Marjory immigrated to Canada in 1967 with their two children, moving to Oshawa, ON then on to Langley, BC where they spent 37 years. They finally settled in Duncan, BC which they have called their home for the past 17 years.

Lewis worked for Phillips Electronics and CBC for many years.

He was an avid golfer and a member of Cowichan Golf Club and Duncan Meadows. He also loved playing at Eighteen Pastures in Mission, BC. Lewis will be missed by the staff at Acacia Ty Mawr in Shawnigan Lake, BC, where he spent the last 7 years of his life battling with dementia. A Celebration of Life is to be held at a later date.

Derek was born in Esterhazy, SK and the family moved to BC in January 1970. He attended and graduated from school in Abbotsford, BC, subsequently attending University of Saskatchewan followed by attendance at University of British Columbia where he completed and received his Bachelor of Science degree. Afterward, he moved to Duncan, BC working at various jobs until he began his career in Crofton at Catalyst Paper, where he recently commenced an Industrial Instrument Mechanic apprenticeship. He was an avid sports fan, particularly enjoying football and baseball and liked to spend time at the gym.

He was a voracious reader and had a calm, assertive personality with an infectious, inspiring spirit. He also enjoyed fine foods and gourmet cooking. However, his prime focus and great pride and joy were his daughters, Riley and Peyton.

A celebration of Derek’s life will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 commencing at 1:00PM at the Quw’Utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre, 200 Cowichan Way, Duncan B.C. (across the street from Superstore).

The family would like to thank CDH Emergency, St. Paul’s Hospital, Royal Jubilee CCU, Cowichan Aquatic Centre staff and especially Dr. Pullan, Dr. McLean and Dr. Sanders for your love and devotion to Derek’s care. Flowers are graciously declined.

December 3, 1927 – January 23, 2014 Born in Victoria, raised in Otter Point where she shared in the hard work on the family farm. Died peacefully at home in the early morning. Predeceased by her parents William and Mary Shambrook, youngest daughter Sandra Annie Wylie (Steve), and older brothers Alfred and Raymond Shambrook. Remembered by sisters Rose, Amy, Shirley and brother Arthur. Beloved wife of Joe Ball, long-time residents of the Cowichan Valley, mother of Sharon Hazelwood (Alan), Joe Ball Jr (Cindy), Peter (Kelly) and William (Christine) the two surviving members of the King’s Daughter Hospital’s only triplets and hailed as Mother of the year in 1966. From early days in Otter Point to travelling the world, she lived in New Zealand, several provinces in Canada and visited many foreign countries. She was full of love for her children, 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and all her extended family.

Married at 18 in 1946 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Victoria, she found a home at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church here in Duncan where she loved and was loved by all her Church Family. A helpmeet, a companion, a lover. I will walk beside you again Darling!

A celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 531 Herbert St. Duncan, BC on Feb 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., interment to follow at the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor to the church building would be welcome.

Shawnigan Lake finished on a winning note in its senior girls’ basketball tournament after two losses with a 42-26 victory over rival Brentwood College.

Shawnigan lost earlier to Mount Douglas 47-33 and Cedar Secondary 73-32 in the four-team event. “It wasn’t the outcome we were hoping to get,’’ said Shawnigan Lake coach Darrin Austin. “But it was nice to get some different competition.’’ Shawnigan had a nine-game win

streak going into the tournament, but was upended by Mount Doug in the tournament opener. Casey Crowley was the leading scorer for Shawnigan with nine points.

Amber Ridgeway came through with seven for Shawnigan in the loss to Cedar.

Michelle Miles topped Shawnigan in the win over Brentwood with eight points.

Brentwood also lost its other two games to Cedar 70-44 and to Mount Doug 59-36.

Cedar placed first with a 55-51 win over Mount Doug. Many of its top players from the volleyball team also showed their prowess on the basketball court.

South Island action is next for the girls followed by the Island tournament at Mark Isfeld Feb. 20 to 22.

t’s never a gamble taking a bunch of Cowichan Valley rugby players to Nevada for the Las Vegas High School Invitational and International Elite Sevens tournaments.

The B.C. U18 women’s team emerged victorious, with four valley players on the gold medal squad coached by Cowichan Secondary’s Brad Skene.

They included: Adrienne Saari, Hannah Morten, Nicole Crowley and Ciel Arbour-Boehme. Saari and ArbourBoehme were returnees from the 2013 provincial sevens team.

“There was a few of us back,’’ said Saari. “We had a very young team this year. I think the biggest difference is more training time.’’

The players managed to get together for two pre-tournament training camps.

“We clicked pretty quickly actually,’’ said Saari. “I think it’s because of the training camps.’’

“I believe that the last U18 girls’ team to win gold was in 2004 so this was a major accomplishment for this group of athletes,’’ noted Skene.

The B.C. women opened with a 48-0 victory over the Swarm and then thumped Ontario Jr. Storm 29-0.

“Beating Ontario 29-0 was a huge accomplishment for the program,’’ noted Skene. “Our pool at the tournament was very tough and this was predicted to be the most meaningful and hardest game in our pool. The players came out focused and played to our strengths and patterns.’’

B.C. went down to a 24-14 defeat against Atlantis to complete the round robin, but then blitzed through the playoffs to beat Minnesota Tundra 53-0 in the quarterfinals, Serevi Selects 24-12 in the semis and a big 32-10 pummeling of Atlantis in a rematch in the final.

“When they beat us, it was mostly off our mistakes,’’ said Saari of the first Atlantis game. “Then we learned from it and cleaned it up for the final.’’

“The fact that two teams from the same pool made the final shows the strength of our pool,’’ Skene noted.

“Atlantis scored early off our mistake but we demonstrated mental strength by responding with improved play and six straight tries before they scored on the last play of the game.’’

Shawnigan Lake School’s George Barton, Tyler Beselt, Marshall Fremlin, Michael Henderson and Wesley Wong, along with Brentwood College’s Aaron Hersant, were members of either the B.C. Gold or Blue teams in the Under 18 men’s competition.

Barton, still an Under 17 player, had a phenomenal tournament for the B.C. Gold team that finished a close second in the Cup final after a 19-14 loss to the U.S.A. All-Americans 1 team.

B.C. Gold had won all of its games prior to that. Barton scored two tries in a 24-12 victory over the Ontario Junior Blues and added another, as B.C. knocked off Upright Rugby Rogues 22-5.

B.C. Gold then edged the High School All-Americans 2 team 22-21 and thumped the Washington Loggers 45-7, with Barton scoring another try.

In the semifinals, B.C. Gold doubled NorCal All Stars 24-12 before coming up just short in the title game.

Wong was a standout for B.C. Blue with tries in four of the team’s six games.

B.C. Blue lost 24-12 to Atlantis, beat NorCal All Stars 20-12, got whitewashed 43-0 by the High School All Americans 1 team and defeated Toronto Rugby 24-12 in round robin play.

The Plate semifinals resulted in a 3512 loss for B.C. Blue against the U.S.A. All-Americans 2 team.

Moving into the Plate Consolation final, B.C. Blue suffered a tough 31-26 loss to the Washington Loggers in overtime.

The B.C. Red junior side made it to the semifinals of the High School Open competition, but was eliminated from the playoffs after a 17-12 overtime loss to eventual division champion Utah.

he Duncan Christian School Chargers have climbed into the No. 7 slot in the latest provincial senior boys’ A high school basketball rankings.

After consecutive bronze medal finishes in two tournaments, the DCS boys travelled to Vic High for a game Friday and won 81-60.

Three players reached double digits for DCS. Nick Kapteyn led the scoring with 25 points, Alan Park had 21 and Jesse Van Wingerden contributed 16.

Doug Groenendijk was not in the lineup, but DCS still had plenty of firepower to win. Groenendijk was away checking out a post-secondary opportunity for the fall since the Chargers had a rare weekend off from tournament play.

It was actually a tough first half for the Chargers.

They trailed 20-15 after the first quarter and 40-38 at halftime before inching ahead 53-52 after three quarters.

DCS caught fire in the fourth quarter, outscoring Vic High 28-8.

The boys are hosting the Duncan Christian Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The host Chargers play in the opening game Friday at 11:15 a.m. against Campbell River Christian. Ucluelet and Mulgrave hit the DCS floor at 1 p.m., Cedar and Maaqtusiis square off at 2:45 and the final game of the opening round pits Richmond Christian against John Barsby at 4:30.

The final is at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, the DCS Chargers girls recorded an easy victory last week over an inexperienced Queen Margaret’s School Royals’ team that tried hard right to the end but just couldn’t score.

Juliet King was the points leader for DCS with 19 plus 16 rebounds. Rebecca Bakker and Danielle Groenendijk added 12 points apiece, with respective rebound totals of 21 and 14.

Mikayla Lewis scored 11 points and Brenna Bazinet also got into double digits with 10.

Becky Bazinet, the team’s lone Grade 12 student, didn’t play.

The DCS girls are playing next in the B.C. Christian Championships at Pacific Academy in Surrey.

raig Odermatt didn’t feel 100% for the Cobble Hill 10K race Sunday, but won it anyway.

Odermatt, 43, of Victoria’s Prairie Inn Harriers was the first finisher among 576 during the second event in the Frontrunners Island Race Series, hosted by the CeeVACs Road Runners.

“I’ve had a couple of health issues,’’ said Odermatt, who finished in 33:29. “It just felt tough.

It’s a hilly course, too.’’

Simon Stewart was only 16 seconds behind the leader and Thomas Holm finished third in 33:54.

The women’s winner was Lucy Smith of LifeSport in 36:08 followed by Alison Hooper in 36:30 and Janet Nielson in 37:52.

Both Odermatt and Smith are also masters

owichan Junior Thunderbirds had a relaxed schedule last week after several hectic tournament weekends.

The junior boys’ basketball squad played just one league game at Brentwood College Thursday and won 53-32.

Noah Charles led the scoring with 18 points while Easton Unrau nailed a trio of three-pointers in his total of 11. Connor Hayer continued his hot shooting hand with a pair of three-pointers.

A big part of the Cowichan team’s success this season has been generated from Charles’ rebounding. He had nine in a limited role after hauling down 18 in a league game at Shawnigan Lake.

Going back to the team’s two tournaments in January, Charles collected 41 rebounds in three games during the Cowichan Thunderbird Classic and 46 rebounds in three games during the previous Emerald tournament at Vancouver College.

That’s a total of 87 rebounds over six games for an average of 14.5 per game against some of the better teams in the province.

“That’s something I’ve been gearing up for,’’ he said.

Odermatt was a bronze medalist in the Canadian masters cross country championships and was also named the 2013 B.C.

masters runner of the year in cross country.

Odermatt hasn’t raced in the Cobble Hill 10K in three years. He was in a tight race up to the 3 1/2-kilometre mark.

“I led the rest of the way,’’ he said.

The sun broke through just before race time and melted away any icy sections.

“This was great,’’ said

Odermatt. “One year they had it here and it was kind of slippery. But this is perfect.’’

Odermatt hadn’t actually won an Island Series race since 1996.

“It’s one thing to win the masters cross country,’’ he said. “This is open to all ages.’’

Richard Light was the first member of CeeVACs to finish, 12th overall in

35:46.

Seven age-category course records were set, including: Hooper (20-24 women); Vince Brotherston (50-54 men, 35:13); Donna Morrissey (55-59 women, 43:53); Garth Campbell (55-59 men, 37:08); Roslyn Smith (65-69 women, 46:17); Jill Davies (70-74 women, 56:01); and Frank Towler (70-74 men, 44:07).

Several hundred people attend celebration of Peter Yates’ life Saturday

Several hundred people turned out at Shawnigan Lake School Saturday for a memorial service for Peter Yates.

The long-time Shawnigan Lake School educator, avid outdoorsman, athletic director and rowing aficionado died on Dec. 10, 2013 after a battle with cancer.

He was 59.

t doesn’t get any better than Shawnigan Lake School against Brentwood College in any sport.

The latest round of sports battles between teams from the rival schools occurred Saturday.

Following the Peter Yates celebration of life that had many people already at Shawnigan Lake School, the senior boys’ basketball teams from both schools assembled there for a second meeting in a week.

Brentwood ran away with the previous clash 66-28 on its home court, but both coaches knew the rematch would be quite different.

Shawnigan Lake, in fact, almost made a complete turnaround — even without its two best players and another, George Barton, away playing rugby in Las Vegas.

“We had opportunities to win that game,’’ said Shawnigan coach Vito Pasquale. “We were leading most of the game. We led for probably more of the game than they did.’’

But Brentwood pulled out the win in the end, 45-41.

“We missed on five straight occasions down the stretch,’’ said Pasquale.

“The effort’s always been there. We concentrated more on rebounding because they really hurt us on rebounding the first game.’’

Brentwood knew it dodged a bullet to get the win, especially being down two heading into the fourth quarter.

“They fought really well,’’ said Brentwood coach Blake Gage. “We weren’t great.’’

The previous lopsided victory didn’t really help Brentwood, Gage added.

Balanced scoring was led by 12 points and 12 rebounds from Devin Cvitanovich. Skyler Rustad and Aidan Carr contributed 10 apiece.

Phillip Norris led Shawnigan with 12 points. Litha Ncanisa had 10 and Emerson Chen chipped in with nine.

It’s another big basketball weekend in the south end of the valley, with Brentwood and Shawnigan co-hosting the Countdown to Playoffs tournament.

Saturday night, it was over to hockey at Kerry Park Arena where the tables got turned and Shawnigan Lake School coasted to a 10-2 win over Brentwood.

The stands were packed with supporters for both sides.

“It was a great game,’’ said Shawnigan’s new director of hockey and head coach Kevin Cooper, 32, who had extensive collegiate and minor pro experience during his playing days.

“Obviously, there was a packed house and all the boys were excited.

“The hockey program’s growing quickly here. We’re going to make it an elite program.’’

Cooper just started at Shawnigan in September. He was impressed with the play of defenceman Kieran Furlonger, who scored twice, and Noah Crumb worked hard at both ends of the ice and scored a goal.

Captains Mike McKinnon and Max Kaumeyer provide great leadership.

Cooper has 25 players in the mix that he shuffled around depending on the opposition.

“We have a good core elite group,’’ he said. “Most of our players are 10th Graders.’’
