‘I was expecting to be killed’ ZAMBONI DRIVER RECOUNTS NARROW ESCAPE FROM COLLAPSING ARENA BY MYLES FISH ADVOCATE STAFF The Zamboni driver who was flooding the Sylvan Lake Arena ice when its roof collapsed early Monday morning was sure he was about to die. “I was expecting to be killed. I really thought, because I had a fraction of a second, ‘You can’t escape this.’ I really thought an eight-by-eight at 80 miles an hour would wipe me out,” said Pat Sawyer over the

phone from Calgary. In Tuesday’s Advocate, it was reported that the Zamboni driver got off of his machine upon hearing cracking noises above and left the 40-year-old arena moments before a large portion of the roof crashed down onto the ice surface. In fact, Sawyer remained on the Zamboni as the structure came crashing down. “I heard a sequence of bangs. “Then, after the second bang I drove about 30 feet. I just turned the steering wheel to take another

lap and then there was one bang and the roof came down, and it came down straight on me. “I grabbed hold of the steering wheel and the exact words out of my mouth were ‘I’m dead.’ I just covered my head and ducked as low as I could,” he said. And though rubble came down all around him, Sawyer said he felt nothing. “I couldn’t believe it — not a mark on me.”

TRAGEDY IN L’ISLE-VERTE

BY MYLES FISH ADVOCATE STAFF What is old will be made newer at Innisfail’s École John Wilson Elementary School thanks to an infusion of over $10 million from the provincial government. Education Minister Jeff Johnson was at the kindergarten to Grade 4 school Thursday to make the announcement, one in a series of recent school modernization announcements that will continue today in Red Deer at Annie L. Gaetz Elementary School. He said the cost estimation for the modernization work is “in excess of $10 million” and could run into the $12-million range. The school was built in 1955, and has had three additions over the years. The money committed by the province is for the second phase of larger modernization work and will go towards upgrading electrical, fire and mechanical systems and the school’s interior. Improvements to the school’s heating and ventilation systems were supposed to be done in phase one of the modernization work, which started last spring, but that project, which is behind schedule, was over cost and so that work has been bumped to the second phase. “It will be a full modernization. It’ll bring us right up to speed and give us the best of the best in our learning environment,” said principal Jacqueline Taylor. École John Wilson is housed within St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School, run by the Red Deer Catholic Regional School Division, and is adjacent to the local middle and high schools. The project’s first phase — which is seeing a pedway, new gym and bus turn-around constructed — was undertaken to give the over-capacity St. Marguerite school more space, and is pushing École John Wilson into what had been a part of the middle school, and the middle school into some underutilized space in the high school. Overall, nearly 2,000 students learn at the “campus.” Chinook’s Edge School Division, the benefactor of the provincial dollars, had listed modernization at the elementary school as its number one capital priority. In 2013, Premier Alison Redford stated that her government would fund the construction of 50 new schools and the modernization of 70 others during the current term. By the end of next week, 98 of those projects will have been announced, and Johnson said all should be announced by the end of February.

Maternity ward operating rooms to ease surgery pressures at hospital BY CRYSTAL RHYNO ADVOCATE STAFF Oh baby! The Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre is gaining two dedicated operating rooms for scheduled caesarean sections and emergency obstetrical procedures. Alberta Health Minister Fred Horne announced on Thursday in Red Deer that the Family Boardwalk Lounge inside the Maternal Child Services Unit will be turned into operating rooms to the tune of $9.7 million. Another $1.2 million for equipment was donated by the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation. “We’re seeing increased pressures in this zone in general surgeries and other medical specialities that require the use of the operating room,” said Horne. An operating room that was dedicated for obstet-

rical uses, including emergencies, will return to general surgery use. Horne said the new spaces will alleviate pressure in the general operating room and are expected to allow 1,600 more general surgeries to be performed each year. He said other specialities will be able to manage surgery schedules and wait lists at the hospital. Obstetrician Dr. Bill Young said there are on average 225 babies born each month or 2,700 a year at the hospital, of which 30 per cent result in c-sections. The unit was originally designed to handle 1,500 deliveries a year. Young, who is also the hospital’s associate zone medical director, said C-sections are the most commonly performed operation in North America.
