An inquest will probe the deaths of three Mountain Institution inmates.

The inquest will take place from Mar. 10 -14 this year, at the Burnaby Coroners Court.

The three men's deaths being investigated are Gerald Joseph Cayer, 49 (d. Feb. 7, 2013), Kyle Darren Tombaugh, 35 (d. Aug. 24, 2012) and Warren Robert Allen, 54 (d. Jul. 20, 2012).

Each of the three inmates were all being housed in the medium security's segregation unit when they died. Their deaths span an eight-month period. And while most coroner's inquests deal only with a single incident, there were enough similarities in the deaths to warrant grouping the deaths together.

Chief coroner Lisa Lapointe confirmed that the facts and circumstances of these three deaths are sufficiently similar that it will be more effective to hold a single inquest into the deaths.

Presiding coroner Vincent Stancato and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding the deaths.

While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it may make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future. An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.

Cayer was serving time for second-degree murder.

Tombaugh was serving four years and 21 days for theft under, assault with a weapon and attempt of an indictable offense.

Allen was an HIV-positive ex-police officer convicted of sexually assaulting teens. news@ahobserver.com

Esplanade to see enhancements by spring Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

A much talked about improvement to the west end of Esplanade in Harrison is getting closer to a reality, thanks to an RMI payment of $160,423.

Since the Resort Municipality Initiative was launched in 2007, Harrison has received more than $2.1 million in funding to enhance services and improve tourism-based infrastructure.

Mayor Leo Facio said the improvements will be underway beginning this spring.

“We are excited to begin phase one of the Village Centre Renewal Project in early March

of this year,“ Facio said. “Phase one of the project will improve the streetscape along a portion Esplanade Avenue by widening sidewalks, installing new street furniture and improving on-street parking which allows visitors and residents to enjoy the amenities and all the natural beauty that Harrison Hot Springs offers.”

The plan was unveiled at the beginning of 2013, as a means to improve the image of Harrison, and increase enjoyment for tourists along Esplanade. In addition to the tourism benefits, the improvements are expected to be a boost

for the businesses in the area.

Key changes mentioned in the unveiling last year involved a narrowing of the roadway to allow for growth of userfriendly sidewalk space, increasing pedestrian flow and allowing for “contemplative areas” for benches and trees.

It would also allow for restaurants and cafes to expand their business onto the sidewalk with chairs and tables.

Landscaping, concrete pavers similar to the ones in Spirit Square, public art, bike racks, benches and wayfinding signs were all a part of the conceptual redesign.

The improvements will also address current drainage issues.

The total cost quoted last February was $515,000. The remainder of the project was expected to be paid for with gas tax funds.

“The Resort Mu n i c ip a l it y Initiative allows resort communities like Harrison Hot Springs

to improve tourism infrastructure and continue to grow our tourism economy,” Facio said.

“It’s so important for resort-oriented municipalities like Harrison Hot Springs have the resources to develop their local tourism-related infrastructure to support regional

tourism economies,” said Laurie Throness, MLA for Chilliwack Hope. “The Resort Municipality Initiative provides targeted funding for just such a purpose and I look forward to following the progress of this year’s projects in the village.”

Across the province, $5.97 million was

invested in the province’s resort municipalities, which include 14 communities along with Harrison Hot Springs.

H1N1 flu death count misleading: officials

Public health officials say more B.C. residents have likely died of H1N1 flu this month than the official count of five lab-confirmed deaths so far.

Four of the confirmed H1N1 deaths were on Vancouver Island, while the fifth was in the Interior and there are none officially listed in the Lower Mainland.

According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, there are 49 patients hospitalized in intensive care units with severe influenza as of Jan. 17.

Sixteen of them are in the Fraser Health region and 10 are on Vancouver Island.

But officials say the number of deaths understate the true scope of H1N1 flu fatalities because patients hospitalized with flu-like symptoms – even those who die – are not generally lab tested for a final confirmation of influenza or type.

“Most deaths from influenza will probably not have influenza identified,” said Dr. Reka Gustafson, a medical

As a result, she said it’s “not a meaningful exercise” to focus on the number of deaths or hospitalizations as that can give a false impression that influenza is less severe.

Based on national averages, the BCCDC estimates there are up to 520 influenza-related hospital deaths in B.C. in a normal flu season each year.

H1N1 makes up more than 80 per cent of flu cases in B.C. so far this year.

Many pharmacies have run out of vaccine after a late scramble to get immunized. The province says nearly 1.4 million British Columbians have been vaccinated so far and the “unprecedented demand” has led to temporary gaps in supply.

More vaccine is on order and will be distributed across the province – 5,000 more doses are expected to arrive this week, another 3,000 are expected next week and the province has requested a further 13,000 doses.

Harrison’s bylaw officer Devlin Onucki gave a brief report on the top bylaw offenses to council on Monday night, and offered some suggestions to improve life in the Village.

Dog complaints stacked up higher than any others in the Harrison Hot Springs in 2013, according to the Village’s bylaw officer.

Devlin Onucki presented a brief synopsis of the year to council on Monday, highlighting the top calls, providing insight into local complaints and making a suggestions for the future.

Bylaw enforcement is complaint-driven, and over the past year, Onucki dealt with 75 written complaints. Of those, 21 were regarding dogs.

Onucki cited two separate incidents where dangerous dogs became a problem. At one home, a pair of German shepherds became too much for even the owner to handle.

At another, two fenced, but unattended and aggressive pit bulls caused people to avoid using the Miami River trail system.

“People were avoiding

the trail because the dogs were smashing against the fence,” Onucki said.

He asked council to consider looking at better defining the dog behaviours, “to clearly address the behaviors of the animal.”

Having a better definition in place in the bylaw would help bylaw officers in enforcement situations, he added.

As for leashing rules, he said that while tourists seem to comply easily, a small percentage of local dog owners walk their dogs off-leash.

Onucki said this has caused little trouble, but recommended that the Village continue to require all dogs to be on leash in the Village.

But dogs weren’t the only issues that needed bylaw enforcement in 2013.

Empty lots being overrun with the Himalayan blackberry bush are a problem. The plant is aggressive, and can

prevent indigenous trees and plants from growing.

This could lead to rodent infestations. Tackling the issue takes up time and resources, he said, and he’s been working with property owners to have sites cleaned up.

Another main concern are parking violations.

This is the number one infraction during the peak season, Onucki reported, with the highest ticketed area (50 per cent) being the at boat launch.

The second highest area is Maple and Lillooet, where 30 per cent of the tickets were handed out.

A new yellow curb at the east end of the street is being ignored, he said. He suggested signage at the area to reduce unlawful parking.

The biggest “parking” ticket was handed out to an unnamed boat owner who was using the municipal dock as a “personal dock.” Onucki reported that the boat

owner was leaving his boat moored for several weeks at a time, despite being asked to move.

It was only after he was hit with multiple fines, totaling $1,000, that he eventually moved.

We would like to provide you with some information to help you prepare for our arrival and anticipate how our activity might affect your daily routine.

We will prep our facades and set pieces on Pioneer Avenue from Monday, January 27th to Wednesday, January 29th. During this time we will be performing intermittent traffic control on Pioneer Avenue while our crew and equipment is working in the road.

On both filming days we anticipate setting up for filming at approximately 7:00am. At that time we will close Pioneer Avenue between Evergreen Drive and Park Street to all vehicular traffic.

The street will, however, still be open to pedestrians and all businesses will be open as usual. We will re-open the road each night when our filming is complete at approximately 10:00pm.

During Friday night’s work we will be filming a scene where a delivery truck explodes in the middle of the street. This will involve a controlled, simulated explosion and fire effect and will produce a loud noise that may be heard in the surrounding area. Members of the Agassiz Fire Department and the RCMP will be on hand to ensure public safety during this scene.

In order to accommodate our vehicles, crew, and equipment, we will need to utilize all of the street parking in the 7000 & 7100 blocks of Pioneer Avenue. We hope to keep a portion of the public lots in the area available to the public. If you normally park in one of these lots for either your business or residence, please contact us so we can help you make alternate arrangements.

Parking in the area will be very limited and we encourage visitors to Pioneer Avenue on the filming dates to arrive on foot if possible. It will also be necessary to move the bus stops on Pioneer Avenue and re-route transit traffic from Pioneer Avenue on to Cheam Avenue.

We will do our best to minimize our impact to the area, but a certain amount of disruption to your regular routine is unavoidable. We sincerely appreciate the ongoing support from the residents and businesses of Agassiz. You continue to make us feel welcome in your community and we will do our best to make our filming activities a positive experience for the area.

Firefighters recognized for commitment ‘Crucial’ that people step up to help community, says Harrison Hot Springs mayor Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

The community would be nowhere without volunteers. And on Monday night, a few Harrison volunteers were celebrated by the

mayor and council.

Back in December, the Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department held their annual Christmas dinner and awards night, where Lieutenant

David Whittaker was given the Volunteer of the Year award, and Bruce Malfait was named Firefighter of the Year. Those achievements, and others, were noted by the mayor in a special presentation this week.

“It’s crucial that men like this step up and do the work,” Facio said.

Malfait was joined by his family at the ceremony, and Fire Chief Don Labossiere noted that support shown by family, friends and the community, is what helps keep the fire department strong.

There are currently 17 firefighters at the HHS Fire Department.

At the awards in December, four of those firefighters received their five year pins,

Capt. Tyler Simmonds, Lieut. Neil MacLean, Capt. Alex Maslin and Deputy Fire Chief Don Driedger.

Firefighters Mark Midan, Phil Hardy and Steve Mumford completed the Recruitment Training Program 4. Lieut. Whittaker and Capt.

Maslin received certificates of appreciation as recruit trainers, and Lieut. Neil MacLean received a certificate of appreciation for the first aid department.

What would the Lower Mainland look like today if it wasn’t for the Agricultural Land Reserve?

As the provincial Agricultural Land Commission marks its 40th anniversary this year, it’s a question worth considering.

The ALC, an independent provincial agency with a mandate of identifying and protecting agricultural land by acting as a steward of the Agricultural Land Reserve, was established in 1974.

According to Dr. Lenore Newman, urban sprawl would now cover virtually all farmland between Vancouver and the Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford if not for the protection of the ALR. “If the Agriculture Land Reserve hadn’t have been put in place, we would have lost 80 percent of the agricultural land in our region by now,” she contends,

extrapolating from the rate at which rural land was being developed for housing, industry, and other urban uses before the ALR was established.

Newman will be speaking about the impact of the ALR as part of the University Lecture Series at UFV on Wed, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m. in the lecture theatre (B101) on the Abbotsford campus. The lecture, titled ALR at 40: Land Loss and Fragmentation in the Fraser River Basin and presented by the UFV Office of Research, is free and the public is welcome.

Newman will be assisted in her Feb 5 lecture by Dr. Denver Nixon, a post-doctoral fellow who has been working with her on a research project supported by the Canada Research Chair funds titled Life in Agriburbia, 40 Years of the ALR. Nixon will share mapping research that he

has done, showing what land has been taken out of the reserve in the communities south of the Fraser River on a parcelby-parcel basis over the last 40 years.

The Lower Mainland is situated in what is essentially a very small mountain-ringed valley, Newman notes, with enormous development pressures on it.

“We are at ground zero in some ways, because valley space is so tight and the stakes are so high,” she says. “It is inevitable that we have to consider densifying existing neighbourhoods, developing hillsides, and recycling moribund industrial land. We’re going to have to do all that to handle growth pressure, but we may as well protect what farmland we have left while we are at it. I think most people would prefer to see that happen.”

Tourism Harrison is focusing on families this February, with a brand new event that will appeal to locals and visitors alike.

The inaugural Harrison Family Fun Carnival will take place on Feb. 8 and 9, in two locations in the Village. The two days of activities, games, entertainment and fun for the entire family are in celebration of BC’s Family Day long weekend.

Admission is by donation.

The Harrison Family Fun Carnival will take place at two venues, St. Alice Hall and Memorial Hall. Families can easily walk between the venues and view the serene Harrison

The theme of Family Literacy Day this year is 15 Minutes of Fun. It encourages parents to make time every day for reading and other learning activities with their children. Literacy is the cornerstone of education

Literacy is the foundation of an educated life. The ability to read opens up new worlds to people of all ages.

For the very young, reading is the cornerstone to starting off right with the basics in schooling.

First, they're demystifying those black designs on a page into letters, but eventually those reading skills will help them easily plough though 12 years of basic education.

For teenagers, reading can provide an imaginary escape.

And for many, writing in a journal can be as therapeutic as chatting with an old friend. In this way, literacy skills can help lift spirits, and even decrease depression.

For young adults, reading and writing skills need to go beyond text speak that often reads more like bingo numbers than

the English language. A good handle on literacy can lead to better communication, and will increase the chances of landing a better job.

Unfortunately, there are people among us who never quite grasped the written language.

There are parents who can't decipher letters from the teacher, and grandparents who can't read to their grandchildren.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Next Monday is Family Literacy Day. It's a day to celebrate all things written, and spoken, with the ones you love. So, grab a book and read it to your children. Offer a journal and a pen to your teen.

Help a young adult revise a cover letter, or encourage a parent to hit the books.

Because it's never too late to learn.

are 30 per cent higher than, well, somewhere else. Chief Allan Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation has cited a discredited study by former community doctor John O’Connor to press the same claim.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta reviewed O’Connor’s claims in 2009. It concluded that “Dr. O’Connor made a number of inaccurate or untruthful claims” about cancer patients, and then refused to provide patient information after his claims made international news.

Retired professor David Schindler toured with Young and continued to push the health scare, referring darkly to newer research showing increased mercury and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) contamination.

Chief Adam was frank in an interview on CTV about using the “Honour the Treaties” tour to strengthen his legal position.

Young’s concert tour put $75,000 in his fund to pay lawyers. Oil isn’t the only thing being extracted here.

By the end of the tour Sunday, Young and Adam conceded they weren’t trying to shut the Athabasca oilsands down, just start a dialogue.

Thanks to uncritical media coverage, there will no doubt be discussions at dinner tables and in classrooms all over the world about the terrible Alberta tar sands and the cancer they don’t actually cause.

We must be the voice Items should be made in Canada for the suffering In response to the news article in the Jan. 19 Observer regarding my brother Gerald Guliker and the RCMP, I would like to mention an important part that is not captured in the article.

Gerald’s despair and actions were caused by sheer frustration with the whole system related to his brain injury, not his epilepsy. We really hope the main focus here which is ‘brain injuries’ will be addressed more seriously, they require unique needs

and understanding that most people don’t understand.

We have to be their voice and fight for better treatment as well as short and long term care facilities that they so desperately need. There are so many, many more suffering from conditions similar to my brothers, let’s hear their screams for help so we don’t let another tragedy like this happen again, it’s too painful for everyone involved.

Traffic through a recipe for disaster Re: OCP Update 2014 (Don’t develop rural neighbourhood) I wholeheartedly support the inclusion of the “teacup Westerly Route” as a bypass option around Agassiz. This is long overdue. It’s ridiculous to have a major artery coming right through the centre of town, not only because of the noise and congestion factors, but from a safety standpoint as well.

We have a lot of seniors and children walking, and to have the heavy trucks passing through is insane. You can pretty much set your watch to when the prison shifts change by the surge

in traffic.

This is a real recipe for disaster.

Your previous writer stated that some 50 families will be affected by the bypass. My estimate is more like a dozen, compared to a couple of thousand townspeople who are presently adversely affected. I think the majority should rule, since this is one of the cornerstones of democracy.

If it can’t be resolved, let’s put it to a referendum, to see what the real numbers are. This issue should have been resolved long ago. Let’s get on with it! It’s a no-brainer.

It’s time to celebrate literacy in our community, and it’s being done with a big, bright bash.

Family Literacy Day is coming to Agassiz on Jan. 28. Shayna Jones, the Literacy Outreach Coordinator for the Fraser Cascade Region, along with the Agassiz Library Supervisor Terrill Scott are hosting an event to celebrate the importance and the joys of literacy. The duo have lined up an evening that “is not to be missed,” said Jones.

“We want to encourage families in the life-long, life-wide, and life-deep practice of learning.

Even just 15 minutes a day spent reading, writing, singing, and

even thoughtfully playing with our children can dramatically improve their literacy skills.”

To highlight literacy successes in the community, book writing contest winners from Story Time in the Park 2013 will be reading their newly published books; Elspeth Bowers, an excellent puppeteer, will wow the crowd with a delightful performance; crafting opportunities will be present for kids, and educational tidbits will be made available for parents.

The festivities will take place in the gymnasium of Kent elementary school on Jan. 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Piano tuning pioneer passes away January 16, 1964 • The Agassiz Harrison Lions held a successful meeting on Tuesday, with guests present from both Hope and Haney. Dr. Mills Clarke spoke on the value of a service club to the community, and his remarks were much appreciated by his audience. Plans are ongoing for the Lions Club’s charter night at the Harrison Hotel on Saturday, Feb. 8, 1964.

• Mr. Henry Schmidt

passed away in the Chilliwack Hospital on Jan. 11, 1964. Mr. Schmidt was born in the Crimea, Russia on Feb 19, 2005. With his parents he immigrated to Canada in 1924. In 1929, he went to Sardis where he married Miss Ortrud Fast. Theirs was the first wedding in the Mennonite settlement “Greendale” He was one of the first pioneer settlers in Greendale.

Chamber donates back to community

The Harrison Agassiz Chamber of Commerce will be financially supporting numerous local organizations in 2014, at a total of $12,500.

The money comes from membership fees from the many businesses involved with the Chamber. The biggest contribution the Chamber will make this year is in the form of a one time, $5,000 donation to the Agassiz Harrison Museum and tourism office for new projects.

They’ll be handing out $1,000

each to the Harrison Festival Children’s Day, Community Service’s food hamper program, and to the Village of Harrison for Christmas lights.

They will give $500 each to the Village of Harrison and the District of Kent for Canada Day festivities.

They will also give $500 to the following organizations and events: The Harrison Dragon Boat Festival, the Walk/Run for Heritage, Kent Raceways, Bands on the Beach, Slow Food Tour, Sasquatch Days and the AESS Chamber bursary.

Optimism abounds all around us Talking with family and friends about the state of the world, it does not take long before the topic becomes sad in a “giving up” kind of

way. No wonder with all the bad news we had throughout the past year! All the natural catastrophes alone were enough to dampen our spirits.

These days, for instance, I am looking forward to watch the Olympic Games in Russia. Canada excels in all winter sports and it will be great fun to follow our athletes and cheer them on.

Also, I just finished reading Chris Hadfield’s book, “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth” and if nothing else makes me proud to be alive, it is this book.

As I mentioned before, good things happen all around us and, I hope, we will never lose our ability to see them and delight in them. While a healthy dose of pessimism might be of use sometimes, a good dose of optimism will serve us even better.

Agassiz Scouts group looking for adult volunteers Fun, adventure and leadership awaits with local youth For more than 100 years, Scouts Canada has brought a world of adventure, outdoor experience and friendship to 17 million Canadian youth. And a dedicated group of Scouts Canada volunteers want to ensure there is Scouting for the boys and girls in the Agassiz and Harrison area.

How can we bring this opportunity to the youth of Agassiz and Harrison?

There are lots of boys and girls who want to be Scouts, but the essential factor to re-vitalizing Scouting in Agassiz and Harrison is to not only register youth, but to recruit adult volunteers to run the programs as well.

Scouts Canada provides fun and interactive training for all adults, at no cost to the volunteer.

All you need is enthusiasm. Can you imagine taking your child for his or her first canoe ride, supporting a child taking a wall climbing session, or helping to build an owl nest box? Or maybe you would like to help with games, crafts or a camp?

Adults who volunteer form a leadership team and work together to organize fun, active and safe programs for the youth.

Youth who have taken part in Scouting programs demonstrate self-confidence and optimism. They become more physically fit, energetic, outgoing, conscientious and compassionate. Plus, they have a lot

of fun! Scouting makes a difference by providing opportunities for youth to grow, experience new “firsts” and develop into productive citizens of the world.

But why let kids have all the fun? Scouts Canada relies on its network of more than 24,000 caring and dedicated volunteers to deliver its programming to youth age 5-18. Agassiz and Harrison need adult volunteers to provide Scouts Canada’s fun and challenging programs to the kids in our communities. 1st Agassiz currently has an active Venturer Scout Group with teenagers between the ages of 14-17. The “Vents” are

off to a winter camping adventure next month.

Starting in February, the 1st Agassiz Beaver Scout Colony, for children ages 5 to 7 years old, will reopen. Next fall they hope to open a Cub Scout Pack (children ages 8 - 10) and a Scout troop (youth ages 11 - 13).

So, whether you are looking to register your son or daughter as a Beaver, thinking about Scouting for an older child, or looking to find a rewarding volunteering experience, come find out more about Scouting in Agassiz on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall, 6800 Pioneer Avenue.

The parent information session portion of the evening will start at 7 p.m.

Help offered for those with chronic pain Pain management program beginning in Agassiz Everyone has experienced pain at some time or another. A burn, a cut, a sprained ankle or a kidney stone can all produce varying degrees of pain. In these cases, the pain results from a known cause and generally disappears when the cause of the pain is no longer there. This kind of pain is called acute pain; its purpose is to warn the body of a problem or injury.

Chronic or persistent pain is different. It lasts longer, typically for months or even years and is, generally, somewhat resistant to medical treatment. It's usually associated with a long-term illness, such as osteoarthritis.

In some cases, such as with fibromyalgia, it's one of the defining characteristic of the disease. Chronic pain can be the result of damaged tissue but very often is attributable to nerve damage.

The symptoms of chronic pain include: mild to severe pain

that does not go away, pain that may be described as shooting, burning, or aching, and a feeling of discomfort, soreness, tightness or stiffness. But, pain is not a symptom that exists alone.

Other problems associated with pain might include fatigue, sleeplessness, an increased need to rest, and a weakened immune system. But, it is the nature of chronic pain – the fact that it's ongoing and in some cases seems almost constant – that makes the person who has it more susceptible to psychological consequences such as anxiety and depression. These emotional responses can, in fact, make the pain worse.

Living with chronic pain is not easy, especially when the pain does not go away. In this community, the University of Victoria Centre on Aging, in cooperation with the District of Kent is offering a free six-week program to help people

experiencing chronic pain due to arthritis, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome or any other condition. This program will be offered on Monday evenings, Feb. 3 to Mar. 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fitness/Activity Centre, 6660 Pioneer Avenue, Agassiz.

This program will provide the tools enabling a person to move from a pain-centred life to a more balanced life where pain is not the focus. Participants will receive a Self-Management Tool Box and a program workbook. There will be some gentle physical movements so participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive shoes. The District of Kent will be bowing out of the Communities in Bloom competition this year, but will participate in the

Winners' Circle program.

Kent has earned Five Blooms numerous times over the past few years, which is the top award for the provincial program.

However, council decided to not compete this year, to help reduce the cost.

They also decided not to participate in the national version of the CIB program.

The community will retain its "Winners' Circle' status, and will pay half of the usual registration fee, which is $750 plus GST for a community of 5,000 to 10,000 people.

(Zella Hydro) for a 3 MW Run-of-River hydroelectric project on Lorenzetta Creek. The proposed project will use Provincial Crown land and private property (58751 McKay Rd) located in the vicinity of Laidlaw BC, and along Lorenzetta Creek. The proposal includes the diversion of 0.6 m3/s of water from Lorenzetta Creek, which will be completely returned to the creek at about 45 meters of elevation on private land. The water works included in the proposal are an intake/weir and intake pond, a water conveyance system, powerhouse, and tailrace. Lower portions of the water conveyance system, as well as the powerhouse, tailrace and power line, are all located on private property at 58751 McKay Rd, Laidlaw BC. The proposed point of diversion for the project is located at about 700 meters of elevation along Lorenzetta Creek.

Students at UFV ‘make’ many things, from dresses to buildings to gourmet concoctions, in programs such as fashion design, carpentry, and culinary arts.

But students who enroll in the co-operative education option, including biology major Brandon Wood, also make money and important career connections.

As his co-op tenure with the BC Ministry of Agriculture in Abbotsford winds up, Wood is already shifting gears for an international student exchange semester in France, taking advantage of another ‘add-on’ option at UFV. Given the connections, contacts, and knowledge gained through his four-month co-op term at the ministry, Wood heavily recommends fellow students take a serious look at the benefits of a co-op experience ahead of the program’s upcoming application deadline of Monday, Jan. 27.

Co-operative Education combines study semesters with full-time, paid employment in a career-related field (work terms). Work terms are four, eight, or 12 months in duration, and are awarded on a competitive basis, just like the ‘real world’ hiring process.

Wood compares co-op work to dating, where neither side is married to the other partner — but a long-term relationship could grow if both agree they’re a good fit. “The experience has allowed

me to showcase my strengths and abilities with no pressure,� he says.

And, he got to make decent money while gaining careerrelated experience. “Instead of having a job that pays well but doesn’t benefit you in terms of career specific experience, I was able to achieve both. I was able to take an extended break from classes that benefited me both financially and educationally, so I was able to finish my degree

Wood wasn’t relegated to fetching coffee, either. Working directly under Dr. Siva Sabaratnam, a plant pathologist with the Ministry of Agriculture, Wood combined field and laboratory assignments aimed at identifying and controlling a relatively new disease affecting valuable blueberry plants throughout the Fraser Valley.

By collecting and studying samples using knowledge and skills gained in UFV classrooms and co-op placements, Wood hopes to learn why the fungus attacks plants, and how and when to

defend against its attack. “He’s an impressive guy, and very hardworking,� says Sabaratnam. “Needless to say, we’re fortunate to have UFV as a co-op partner here at the ministry.�

Wood’s co-op experience is typical in many ways, says UFV Science and Technology co-op coordinator Susan Francis. “Time and time again one of the biggest benefits I see for students in UFV’s co-op program comes down to one word: confidence,� she says. “Their confidence all around is built working in their first professional placement. They emerge from the program with real-world experience and improvement in a variety of skill sets.�

Students can apply to the Cooperative Education program any time. Applications are reviewed after the application deadlines on the last Monday of the month in September, January, and May. Co-ops can extend the time it takes to earn a degree from one semester to one year. Students usually try to incorporate some of their co-op placements over the summer months. In order to be considered, applicants need to be full-time students with at least 18 UFV credits while holding a minimum grade point average (2.33 for diploma programs, 2.67 for degrees).

Fraser Valley musical duo Kat Wahamaa and Tony Rees will host the Abbotsford launch of their new CD, ‘Everything Blue’ on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m., at Cristal Sawatzky’s Level 6 Images Studio.

Everything Blue showcases their original roots, jazz and blues styles, along with one signature standard they love, the classic ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’.

Kat and Tony have built up a loyal following since they first got together 13 years ago, and they are just as comfortable on-stage fronting a big band as they are as a duo. They write and play beautiful music together and are real life partners too, although Everything Blue is the first album to feature songs they’ve written as a team.

As Kat and Tony say, “A theme of finding joy in the fundamentals runs through the songs, whether you are down on your luck or surrounded by stuff.”

The couple first met in Vancouver in 1999 and began working together in various performing groups and projects, which led to the recording of Kat’s solo CD Cascadia in 2001 and the formation of the Back Door Slam quartet 10 years ago with another musical couple, violinist Jennie Bice and bassist Joe Samorodin.

The Back Door Slam name came from a line in an old Bob Wills western swing tune called ‘I’ll Get Mine’. Back Door Slam’s CD, also called ‘I’ll Get Mine’, was released in 2008.

“We were looking for a fiddle player and discovered Jennie at an event in Mission,” says Tony.

As an added bonus, Jennie’s husband Joe is a bass player and operates a recording studio in their Mission home — and the two couples clicked on a musical level.

It was in 2007 that Kat and Tony started writing songs together, with Tony usually coming up

with musical ideas and Kat writing the words, although those roles sometimes switch too.

“I’ll have an idea for some chords,” says Tony.

“One of the new songs came from a zydeco riff, to which I added some more chords and Kat came up with the melody and a bridge. Sometimes we write verses together, sometimes separately.

It’s kind of like the way Lennon and McCartney did it. And we have two more albums of material left over.”

Kat and Tony recorded Everything Blue in a rather nomadic way, starting at Dave Flood’s studio in Lund, B.C. Next stop was Whistler, with Simon Stribling on horns, Lauri Lyster on drums and Dave Clairmont on bass at Stribling’s Holy Mackerel Studios. They then mixed those tunes with Victor Smith at his Freemantrax studio in Vancouver. During their recent two month tour in Japan, they wrote and recorded one song, ‘Warrior of Love’, in Kagoshima city with Kat’s son, hip hop artist Jesse Warner. They finished up the project with Joe Samorodin at Annwyn

Studios in Mission.

Kat and Tony are excited to hold their Abbotsford release at the studio of Cristal Sawatzky.

A multi-talented exhibiting artist in the areas of fine art photography, painting and mixed medium pieces, she opened the commercial studio and art gallery in the heart of “Historic Downtown Abbotsford” in 2012.

Sawatzky will be working on a canvas as the evening unfolds and thoughtprovoking local poet Robert Martens will also read from his new book ‘Little Creatures’.
