Contemporary neuroscience has revealed that our brains grow from the foundation up. This foundation governs our emotions, and it is optimally formed by immersing children in worlds that are “relationally rich.” Our children today are growing up relatively isolated, without the benefit of traditions that keep them marinating in the companionship of nuclear and extended family, villages, and communities. This void has occurred at the same time that the pressures on children have increased - they have to be “ready to learn” at younger
and younger ages; they are in multiple extracurricular activities; they are required to sit for long hours at desks in classrooms and “perform.” In order to fend off anxiety, we (parents, teachers, etc.) are left to backfill this relational void by finding ways to have the children in our care resolutely believe in the enduring comfort of the relational connection we share with them. It ultimately comes down to the most simple, readily available, affordable answer – relationship. In the literal and figurative arms of those who care for them, the anxious child can indeed find rest.
