Police bust scam artists in Hope Kerrie-Ann Schoenit Hope Standard

Three people arrested in Hope early Friday morning are facing multiple charges in connection to fraudulent activity throughout the Lower Mainland.

An officer on patrol in the Flying J Travel Plaza parking lot spotted Surrey residents Christine Ann Connelly, 28, and Coral Kimberly Baird, 23, and 27-year-old Randall Sydney Ward from Abbotsford acting suspiciously when she pulled up.

They tried to flee the area on foot, but the officer managed to corral

them and bring them back to their parked car, which turned out to be overdue from a rental company in Surrey. According to Hope RCMP, one of the women appeared to be “very high on drugs” at the time.

Police searched the vehicle and found numerous stolen identification and credit cards from all over the Lower Mainland, along with high-end items that are believed to have been fraudulently purchased. A credit card reading device, two laptop computers and cell phones were also seized. Police found drugs, including suspected marijuana, GHB and methamphetamine, inside the

car along with drug paraphernalia.

“All three of these individuals are very well-known to police and are prolific offenders from outside our area,” said Hope RCMP Staff Sgt. Suki Manj. “Criminals have no boundaries and they travel throughout our communities. This is an example of good police work where we’ve located three very active criminals in our community. We believe the stolen items were taken from unlocked vehicles and remind the public to keep their belongings out of site and not make themselves targets for these types of criminals.”

Connelly, Baird and Ward have

been charged with false pretense, possession of a break-in instrument, and possession of stolen property.

Connelly and Baird are also facing charges of willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, escape from lawful custody, personation with intent to avoid arrest, breach of undertaking, and breach of probation order. In addition, Baird is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

All three remain in custody, with Connelly and Baird set to appear in Chilliwack Provincial Court on Jan. 14 followed by Ward on Jan. 15.

Severe H1N1 flu cases strike Fraser Health region Jeff Nagel

Anyone who got the 2013 flu shot is immunized against the nowcirculating strain of H1N1, he said. People who got the H1N1 flu shot in 2009 – when there was widespread concern about an outbreak of that strain – may have some immunity but are urged to get a new shot.

“We’re not sure whether this virus has moved a little bit,” Van Buynder said. “We recommend people get the current vaccine rather than relying on the previous one.”

B.C.’s Influenza Control Policy came into effect Dec. 2.

In addition to health care workers, anyone visiting someone in a health-care facility will be expected to have been vaccinated or wear a mask to help protect those most vulnerable this influenza season.

Fraser Health is urging residents to get the flu shot if they haven’t yet had it after a surge in severe cases of H1N1 influenza.

As of Monday, 30 patients sick with suspected H1N1 had been treated in hospital intensive care units with artificial respiration, although some have since been discharged. One patient has died but the case has not yet been confirmed as H1N1 flu.

Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Van Buynder said the cases here are mirroring the pattern seen recently with outbreaks in Alberta, Ontario and Texas.

Ill patients here are not the very elderly, but adults of various ages from 20 to 60, he said.

Two are pregnant women and others suffer from chronic illness or are very overweight.

Hospitalized patients are at Royal Columbian, Surrey Memorial and Abbotsford Regional hospitals, Van Buynder said, but added that’s just because the most seriously ill patients concentrate in the region’s three

big hospitals. The virus isn’t limited to any particular community.

“This is right across Fraser,” he said.

Van Buynder said all patients currently hospitalized with the flu are expected to survive, but he said the outbreak is disturbing.

“We are urging those who have not already had their flu shot to get one. It is not too late.”

Regional district aims to block waste incinerator permit renewal Jeff Nagel Black Press

If Metro Vancouver wants to build a new garbage incinerator it claims will be state-of-the-art it should first outfit the existing one with the best possible pollution scrubbing technology.

That’s the position the Fraser Valley Regional District is taking in opposing the renewal of the operating certificate for Metro’s current Waste-To-Energy Facility in south Burnaby. The FVRD argues the proposed permit doesn’t go far enough in lowering the limit on allowed emissions toward international best-practices levels already identified by the provincial government.

FVRD board vice-chair Patricia Ross said Metro has failed to improve emission controls as fast as it could have at the existing incinerator.

“They could have upgraded it to the very best technology but they didn’t because they thought it was too expensive,” Ross said.

“They could have and they should have. How are we to believe them when they say they will operate the next one at the best of standards?”

The decision on renewing the permit will be made by the provincial environment ministry.

Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore said the province has full control of the process.

“We have continually upgraded the Burnaby facility and have plans for continuous improvements,” Moore said.

The latest upgrade underway will reduce the plant’s nitrogen oxide emissions from 0.9 per cent of the region’s total to 0.4 per cent in 2014, he said.

The plant’s emissions of lead, chromium, mercury and cadmium are each 0.1 per cent of the airshed’s total, Moore said, while emissions of dioxins, furans and fine particulate are “so low they are almost undetectable” at 0.001 per cent of the airshed total.

The incinerator, which generates electricity to power 16,000 homes, is in line for another $20 million in further environmental upgrades over the next decade, he added.

Medical premiums for all but low-income B.C. residents went up again with the start of the new year.

The B.C. government increased its Medical Services Plan premiums for the fifth straight year, by four per cent across the board. The Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation have calculated that MSP premiums in B.C. have risen 28 per cent since 2010.

Effective Jan. 1, the monthly health premium

for a single person rises from $66.50 to $69.25. In 2014, families of two pay $125.50, up from $120.50, and families of three or more pay $138.50, up from $133.00.

Many full-time employees have their MSP premiums paid by their employer. People earning $30,000 or less are eligible for reduced premiums on a sliding scale, with premiums eliminated for those earning $22,000 a year or less.

The B.C. government has used the increased MSP revenues to offset

the long-term growth of health care costs, which are approaching half of the total provincial budget.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s 2013 budget projected health spending to increase 2.3 per cent in the current fiscal year, 2.7 per cent in the year beginning April 1 and only 2.2 per cent the following

year. The government’s critics called that unrealistic after years of increases of more than five per cent.

The CTF reports that Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance payments are also going up for many people, despite a federal government pledge to freeze EI premiums for three years.

In its New Year Tax

Changes report, it calculates that maximum EI premiums will go up $23 in 2014, totalling $914 for the year.

The maximum employee Canada Pension Plan deduction, charged to those earning $52,500 or more, goes up $70 to $2,426. Employers match employee CPP payments dollar for dollar.

Reduce your risk Recent reports of death and illness stemming from the start of the influenza season underlines the importance of vaccinations.

The most severe cases so far have been in Alberta, where health officials estimate the virus has killed 10 people.

In B.C., while the numbers are not as high, Fraser Health reports 30 people in hospital, all suspected of having the H1N1 strain of the flu.

One person has died, but it is not confirmed if H1N1 is to blame.

To many, H1N1 is a familiar name. They remember the widespread concern when it was first identified as the “swine flu” in 2009. They also remember that despite dire warnings of an impending pandemic, the virus passed without much damage.

For health officials, that success was a direct result of the intensive vaccination efforts made worldwide. To skeptics, however, it was just another sign of unwarranted alarm and manufactured panic.

Indeed, it is easy to under-appreciate the flu threat. After all, who hasn’t contracted the virus at some point? For many it’s simply part of winter and nothing worse than a nasty cold.

What they forget is the fact that influenza is not some static disease. It is constantly changing to undermine the defenses we build. If successful, the consequences can be devastating.

In 1918 the most deadly conflict the world had ever seen was nearing its bloody end. But as tragic as the First World War was, more people died in the flu pandemic that struck that year than in the entire war.

Estimates put the global death toll at between 50 million and 100 million people. In Canada, the disease claimed 50,000 lives – many of them young and in their prime of life.

Many would like to think that the scale of that pandemic is ancient history. But the fact is the only thing preventing its resurgence are the actions we take to contain an outbreak.

We have the tools at our disposal to reduce the risk. But it’s up to us to use them.

Another year of enviro-wars begins B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher The new year lurched to life with a round of shouting about the environment, as our post-industrial, post-literate urban society grapples with conflicting claims of impending doom.

The release of a group of Greenpeace protesters from a Russian prison was welcomed by TV news networks desperate to fill the holiday dead zone.

Our intrepid Canadian pair got to describe over and over their bid to hang a strongly worded banner from a Russian offshore oil platform, and their horror when security forces boarded their vessel from helicopters and seized it.

In all the fawning interviews, I kept waiting for two questions to be asked. What did they think Vladimir Putin’s regime would do? And what was the point? How is disrupting one oil platform for an hour going to save the planet?

The Greenpeace “activists” claimed this was the first oil platform to operate above the Arctic Circle. So it was a line in the snow, which I’m sure impressed Putin as he ramps up his territorial claim to include the North Pole.

Meanwhile at the South Pole, TV anchors remained carefully sombre as they reported numerous bids to rescue a scientific vessel trapped in thick ice. No quips about the predictive abilities of climate scientists please!

global warming news outlets BBC and The Guardian aboard to capture the melting wrought by a century of industrial expansion. The rescue efforts (from a Russian ship by Chinese helicopters) also disrupted an Australian icebreaker’s supply trip for one of the real scientific expeditions working in Antarctica.

Skeptics had great fun with the Antarctic debacle, as they did earlier with the resurgence of Arctic ice that trapped climate tourists.

As is normal in the Internet age, the climate debate has split into two fanatical factions, each of which promotes the most extreme examples it can find to prop up its version of truth. They call each other “warmists” and “deniers” among other pithy names.

Greenpeace is now known in B.C. as part of our Team America anti-tar sands brigade. They got off

to a good start in 2014 by selectively seizing on reports of a new study of mercury contamination in northern Alberta.

A “bullseye” of this dreaded neurotoxin has been drawn around oilsands operations by measuring traces in snow. The study by Environment Canada scientists isn’t published yet, but Postmedia News reported on a presentation in November by the researchers.

“The federal scientists stress the mercury loadings around the oilsands are low compared to the contamination seen in many parts of North America including southern Ontario and southern Quebec,” the news report states.

This is like the study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in northern Alberta lakes that was twisted into propaganda and fed to the news media last year.

Of course safe levels of these materials have been set by Health Canada. You’re more likely to get significant exposure to mercury from a broken fluorescent lamp or the mercury amalgam in your old tooth fillings than you are from feeding ducks at the lake, although you might get a whiff of PAH when you gas up the car or board the bus.

I also learned that Hope has hired a new director of finance and that council had approved an extra $350,000 for the transfer station construction, an item that was supposed to be covered by the original budget. The latter was reported in the fine

print of the monthly newsletter on the back page of the paper and Staff Sgt. Manj’s transfer wasn’t reported at all but contained in his own Christmas greeting in The Hope Standard.

All of these items are more newsworthy than the quality of that reportage. Stellar performances such as Suki’s should at least warrant a press

release from the district or the RCMP communications office with an accompanying article. Given the recent expressed public interest in the district’s finances, surely we should know why the landfill closure is over budget.

Is this avoidance or laziness in communicating with the public?

Canadians are not getting bang for their buck Here we are, a few days into the new year and already one of our politicians is showing his arrogance. Yes folks, I am talking about the now world famous for his stupidity, mayor of Toronto.

The man is known to flip-

flop on whether he is a drug addict and drunk, even when our news media has proven him guilty many times over.

Now he’s declared himself a candidate to run again in the forthcoming municipal election. If he personifies the

level of capability of our politicians in general, boy are we in for hard times in the years to come. The way our politicians go from one scandal to another clearly shows the fact that the electorate in Canada is getting a very small bang

for their buck.

In my opinion, if there is no improvement in the way we are governed at all levels of government, then we can’t afford our politicians any longer.

Despite the warm and wet conditions on the coast this winter, a cure for the “lack of winter blahs” can be found in nearby Manning Provincial Park.

With its higher elevation and its proximity to the interior, Manning Park often gets snow when the coastal mountains are still waiting and it has been no different this year.

Over the holiday season, winter enthusiasts from all over the Lower Mainland found out that Manning Park Resort is closer than they think.

Whether they came up to spend a day on the slopes, cruised the cross country ski trails, or enjoyed a moonlight guided snowshoe tour, snow hunters found what they were looking for at Manning.

Through intermountain reciprocal agreements, season pass holders from most other ski areas will be honored and even offered discounts at Manning Park Resort.

Although snowmaking abilities have been allowing some downhill skiing to take place on the North Shore, so far cross country skiers have been stymied. This year Manning Park Resort has added two new cross country ski trails to the list. The Cascade Lookout Trail takes skiers up to about 5,500 feet and then the Blackwall Peak Trail carries on to almost

6,500 feet – well above the snow line. Reciprocal discount agreements are offered for holders of nordic season passes as well.

The Manning Park Resort alpine area currently has an average base of 130 cm, with 34 cm of fresh powder on Jan. 2 and snow still falling.

Property assessments are up slightly across most of B.C., with dips in average residential values in the Okanagan and on Vancouver Island.

The biggest increases were in the Northwest and Peace River regions, where total residential values rose about 10 per cent as natural gas and other industrial development picks up speed.

The B.C. Assessment Authority released its 2014 property assessment rolls last Thursday, showing continued slight growth in total property values in most regions of B.C. The value of all property in B.C. rose 1.27 per cent, despite declines in most regions for farm, recreational and managed forest land.

In the Lower Mainland, most residential values showed modest increases, from almost flat on the North Shore to 1.61 per cent in Vancouver, 0.68 in North Fraser, 1.98 per cent in Surrey-White Rock and 1.53 per cent in the Fraser Valley.

However, in Hope, average residential property values dropped eight per cent from $275,000 in 2013 to $253,000 this year.

In Southern Vancouver Island, total residential property value fell 2.69 per cent, with similar decreases for recreational and farm property. Business property is up 3.89, and major industrial property jumped 17.45 per cent.

Central Vancouver Island residential property slipped 1.31 per cent, with similar decreases in industrial, recreational and farm property and a 2.67 per cent rise in business property. The Courtenay region saw residential values hold steady, with business property up 3.36 and farm and recreational values down two per cent.

Penticton region residential property is down 0.94 per cent, with a similar dip in farm value.

Kelowna also had about a one per cent drop in farm value, with residential value steady compared to 2013. The Vernon region saw a 1.57 per cent drop in residential value and a 1.95 per cent dip in farm value.

Residential property value was up 1.21 per cent in the NelsonTrail region, up 1.31 per cent in the East Kootenay and up 0.76 per cent in the Kamloops region.

Residential value held steady in the Cariboo region, with declines recorded in industrial, farm and forest land.

The largest moves in the 2014 assessment roll were for managed forest land, which showed a jump of 15.3 per cent in the Fraser Valley and drops of 10 per cent or more in other regions.

Rod Bealing, executive director of the Private Forest Landowners Association, said the value reflects fluctuations in the price of logs, with property value lagging the timber market by several years.

Two Hope and District Minor Hockey products have cracked the line-up on Chilliwack’s top peewee rep team, where they have helped them to a 7-4-2 win-loss-tie record in the first half of their AAA tier 2 season.

Defenseman Brandon Pennell and goaltender Dawson Pelletier put their skills up against a deep pool of hopefuls at the pre-season rep tryouts and were chosen for the top squad.

“This year we had somewhere around 80 players try out for the three rep teams,” said head coach Sean Wicker on Tuesday. “Each team carries nine forwards, six defense and two goalies, so competition for the spots on all three teams is fierce.

“It’s quite a compliment for

a player and a family to make the top team within their association. Many of these players have put in countless hours away from the rink and during the spring and summer months to give themselves the best chance possible.

“I would like to thank the Hope Minor Hockey Association for doing a great job in developing their young players and then allowing them the opportunity to travel to Chilliwack to participate in the competitive stream,” added Wicker.

In addition to the first team placements, three HDMHA players made the third rep team. In fact, Sam Reynen and Connor Douglas of Agassiz/Harrison and Hope’s Seth Prawdzik got to show-up the top team at the Chilliwack Peewee Jamboree over the Christmas break.

While Pennell and Pelletier finished out of the medals, the third team won gold, with a perfect five wins and no losses in their division.

“It was the first win for a Chilliwack rep team at their own tournament since 1995,” said Brad Pelletier, Dawson’s dad.

Twelve-year-old Dawson had played for coach Wicker on Chilliwack’s second rep team last year.

“Dawson progressed well during the spring and summer and has formed a good goaltender tandem with Cory Richardson,” said Wicker.

Physical strength, size and skills improve so much in a year that first-year peewees are hard-pressed to make the top team. Wicker said 15 of the 17 players are secondyear. That made it all the more impressive that Pennell was chosen as a first-year player last season.

“Brandon is a solid all around d-man, who brings his experience and leadership from last year to this year’s team,” said the coach. “He has been progressing very well this season and will be ready to make the big jump to bantam next year.”

Hockey Canada ruled out body checking in all levels from peewee and below, starting this season — but Pennell will be back into it in bantam.

“I’m pretty good at passing and I’ve got a pretty good shot,” said Pennell, who turns 13 later this month. “I’ve played defense my whole life but last year I got to play forward for the last part of the season and I scored two goals.”

Pelletier has been a goalie since his Hockey 3 year, at age seven, encouraged by his coach Ric Hampton.

Since then, spring hockey and training in Abbotsford with Andy Nielson’s Next Level Goal Tending school has helped accelerate his development.

Home games for the Hope duo are usually on Mondays, 7:30 p.m. at Prospera Centre.

HAMBLY, Sydney (Syd) Oct 12, 1950 - Jan 2, 2014

ARAKI, Shirley Margaret (nee Gibson) October 28, 1933 January 3, 2014 With deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Shirley Margaret Araki after a brief bout with cancer.

Shirley was born in Chilliwack to John and Margaret Gibson.

She first found employment in Hope as a postal clerk with Canada Post and in 1950 met the young Mitsuo Araki. In 1951 Shirley entered the Air Force and was posted to Germany. In 1954 Corporal Gibson was honorably discharged, returned to Hope and resumed working at Canada Post. Shirley and Mitsuo were married September 21, 1957 and on August 4th, 1959 saw the birth of their first son Michael Tai. Steven Todd came along on April 27, 1963 and on November 8, 1967 they were blessed with their third son Ryan Kerry. Shirley loved to read, solve crosswords and was a life long ardent bridge player.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 56 years Mitsuo, her sons Tai (Jen), Todd (Joanne), Ryan (Sue), grandchildren Lianne, Matthew, Samantha, Kyle, Dylan, Hailey and Emma. She is predeceased by her brother Pat and is survived by her sisters Blanche and Beverley and her brother Jack (Lee).

No service by request. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Fraser Canyon Hospice Society would be appreciated. No koden please.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Syd passed away in the hospice wing of the Hope Hospital with his wife and family by his side. He was born in Princeton, B.C. and raised in Hedley, B.C. His family moved to Boston Bar in 1962, where he met his wife Babs and they raised their two children.

He was predeceased by his father Syd Sr and mother Ruby Hambly. He will be sorely missed by his loving wife Babs, daughter Sharon (Matt) Pronk and son Daniel (Yvonne) Hambly. Grandchildren: Tyler and Brett Pronk, Jadeanna, Dryden, Hannah and Ashtyn Hambly and brother Rick (Robie) Hambly.

He enjoyed all the time spent with his wife tending the lawns/gardens at the RCMP Detachment and Canada Post locations, and the many hours cutting, collecting and storing firewood for the season(the higher the row the better). He loved bowling and took pride in mentoring the youth bowlers. Most importantly was the love he had for his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Boston Bar Community Hall on Saturday January 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fraser Canyon Hospice Society.

Special thanks to Lorraine and staff of Home Health for your guidance and compassion through this difficult time, also to Dr. Switzer and the outstanding nurses at Hope Hospital.

Don Low was born in Elbow, SK, to William and Bertha Low, the 6th of nine children.

In 1937 the family moved to Aldergrove, B.C., where he completed his high school, and entered the work force as a bank clerk in down town Vancouver. Shortly after, he was conscripted into the armed forces, and served overseas during WW11, at a Canadian Army Hospital in Great Britain. Prior to leaving Canada, at age 19, he met and fell in love with Harriet Ackersviller of Stratford, ON. Their long-distance romance continued for the duration of the war, and they were married in 1947 and moved to Vancouver where they raised their two children, David and Sharon. During these years Don worked in several capacities, finally becoming a realtor in 1959, - a position which he proudly held until age 90. Along with his brother Ray, he developed and established the creation resort of Sunshine Valley.

Don was well known for his outgoing personality, sense of humour and most of all by his delight in knowing Jesus Christ as his personal saviour and his desire to share this message with others.

Don was predeceased by his first wife, Harriet, and is survived by his wife Joyce, son David (Dorothy) and daughter Sharon, four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by his two sisters and two brothers, and is survived by brothers; Bill, Maurice and Norman (Ray), and his sister Margaret Lungren.

He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Charles Walter Thomas Charlie passed away peacefully on Dec. 24, 2013 at Fraser Canyon Hospital. He was born May 16,1927 in Toronto. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Margaret Thomas and his fraternal twin sister, Doris (Thomas) Fonden. Charlie is survived by his niece, Diane (Fonden) Nederveld of Colorado and two nephews, Robert Fonden of New Hampshire and Ronald Fonden of Federal Way Washington. Charlie spent most of his youth and young adult life in Manitoba graduating from the University of Manitoba. He then enlisted with the RCMP serving in many communities across the country including Hope from 1956 to 1958. Charlie and Frannie knew that Hope was where they wished to live permanently. Upon their return in 1968 they moved to Silver Creek and became the King and Queen of “cricksiders”. Frannie passed away in 2011 and Charlie remained in their home.

Charlie was a founding member of the Flood, Laidlaw, Silver Creek Fire Department monitoring his pager until his passing and was a long-standing member of Rotary and the Legion. He received the Governor General Award for exemplary service to his community. Frannie and Charlie were devoted members of the Anglican Church.

Thank you to the Fraser Canyon Hospital staff for all your care and kindness. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at 2pm at the Anglican Church.

Donations may be made to the Fraser Canyon Hospice Society. No flowers by request.

Heart health tips no matter the weather The weather and temperature outdoors can have a large impact on energy levels and motivation to exercise.

Warm, sunny weather can beckon one outdoors, while cold or rainy weather could keep one hibernating inside – which is not good for the spirit or the body, including cardiovascular health.

Staying active when the weather seems to be pitted against you can be challenging. However, there are many things you can do to make the best of things and still get the exercise needed for a healthy heart. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

T Head outdoors: Instead of the regular workouts you do, consider something that makes the most of the weather outdoors. If it’s hot outside, consider walking by the seaside where the ocean mist can keep you cool, or having your feet in the laps of water reaching the sand.

Unless you are the Wicked Witch of the West, a little rainfall will not make you melt. Don a raincoat and take a brisk walk around the neighborhood. If it’s cold outdoors or if there’s re-

sidual snow sledding or skiing remain fun ways to burn calories. All of these activities count as moderate to vigorous exercise, which is recommended daily for most people.

T Workout indoors: This doesn’t necessarily mean heading to the nearest gym. It’s possible to get recommended exercise at home or at another location.

Walking briskly around a mall is good exercise and you can window shop in the process. Lift heavy items around the house in place of dumbbells. Doing regular household chores with more vigor is another way to get blood flowing and your heart pumping.

T Eat right: It’s far too easy to indulge in comfort foods, but they tend to be fattening. Eating the right foods to maintain a healthy weight goes a long way toward protecting the heart.

Be sure to eat breakfast every day, and choose fruits and vegetables as snacks over sweet and salty items. Canned varieties are just as healthy as fresh produce and can offer a variety of flavors when certain foods are not in season. Be sure to include plenty

of foods high in fiber. Not only will they help keep cholesterol levels in check, but it will also help you to feel full faster and longer.

T Dress appropriately: Weather is often unpredictable. Therefore, dress in layers so you can remove or add clothing as needed to remain comfortable. Children and older adults are more susceptible to the effects of cold weather.

According to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, when temperatures are low your heart works harder to keep the body warm. Dressing warmly can help avoid taxing the heart.

The same caution applies when the temperature is extremely warm. It’s easy for the elderly to overheat and become dehydrated. Dress in light clothing and remember to drink plenty of water.

Before starting any exercise regimen, it is important to discuss your plans with a physician.

He or she can determine if you are physically capable of moderate exercise or if any illnesses may impede your ability.

Keep Fit exercise class designed for adults over 55 Exercise is an important part of staying healthy as you age.

In addition to programs geared towards seniors at the Hope rec centre, Jill Last offers a weekly Keep Fit 55+ exercise class at Canyon Golden Ager’s seniors centre. The class runs about 50 minutes and incorporates

chairs, weights and bands with low impact aerobics using similar moves to line dancing.

There are also warm up and cool down stretches.

“As we get older, balance and range of motion are really important to us,” said Last.

“This class covers all of those things done

to music that’s kind of uplifting. It’s a total body workout.”

Class participants currently range in age from 55 to 91, and many have been attending the class since Last started teaching it 15 years ago. She said participants are not only committed to their health and well-

being, but care about each other, with many building strong friendships over the years.

“It’s a very social group,” she added. “I promote the fact that it’s not about trying to compete with each other, but working at your own level.”

The $2 drop-in exercise class runs Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. at the Canyon Golden Ager’s hall, 560 Douglas St. On the first Tuesday of the month following the class, there is a loonie coffee social gathering with goodies. The group also organizes a Christmas

Precautionary measures older travellers must consider

Travelling as an older adult might require more caution and planning than it does for young jetsetters, but such measures won’t diminish the joy of your travels.

Whether retired or simply an empty nester, older men and women often love their increased opportunities to travel and see the world. Without kids to cater to or college tuition to pay, men and women approaching retirement age, or those who have already passed it by, find themselves with more free time to take to the highways and skyways and experience other cultures.

While travelling is a great way to make the most of one’s golden years, travelling as an older adult isn’t the same as it might have been back when you were a carefree teenager or 20-something backpacking through Europe. Before setting out to see the world, older travellers should consider a host of factors.

Older travellers tend to travel abroad more than they do domestically, so be sure all documentation, including passports for each traveller, is upto-date. If you’re travelling for an especially long period of time, be sure your passport is valid beyond the length of the trip.

In addition to passports and any visas you might need, make sure your driver’s licences and auto insurance policies are current and will remain so through the trip. This is important for travellers who plan on renting a car during their vacation.

Don’t forget to bring your driver’s licence and proof of auto insurance (as well as contact information for your insurance company should an accident occur) on your trip.

It’s also important to consider geographical conditions before establishing any travel plans. Older men and women tend to have more health issues and might even be on prescriptions that can make it challenging to travel to certain areas.

Before committing to a trip, consult your physician about the possible effects a certain climate might have on you personally. Some people might be sensitive to altitude and therefore unable to travel to high-altitude locations without putting themselves at serious risk.

When considering climate and geography, don’t overlook a region’s history or likelihood of natural disasters. If a given destination has a history of hurricanes, earthquakes or tsu-

Estate planning helps take care of loved ones entitled to the estate.

“It’s taking care of the people you leave behind and making sure that everything is set up for them,” said Scott Simpson, a partner at Simpson Notaries in Chilliwack and Hope.

“In order to do a will, you’ve got to have a full mental capacity. It’s one of those things like buying insurance, you have to do it before it’s too late.”

The laws governing wills and estates in B.C. are set to change substantially this year. The Wills, Estates and Succession Act takes effect March 31 and aims to provide greater certainty for individuals who put their last wishes into

writing while simplifying the process for those responsible for distributing an estate.

Among its benefits, the new act clarifies the process of inheritance when a person dies without leaving a will, makes the process easier for a person to transfer the title of their spousal home when their spouse dies, clearly outlines the sequence in which to look for heirs to a person’s estate, provides the courts with more latitude to ensure a deceased person’s last wishes will be respected, clarifies obligations relating to property inheritance in the context of Nisga’a and Treaty First Nation lands, and lowers the minimum age

When two people own property in joint tenancy, the property will automatically belong to the survivor if one tenant passes away. When property is held as tenants in common, there is no right of survivorship and each person’s share will pass to their respective estate.

Under the new law, if two joint tenants die at the same time, the joint tenancy will be converted into tenancy-in-common and each person’s respective estate will receive half of the property.

Another good idea, similar to a power of attorney, is a representation agreement that appoints a representative, or multiple representatives, to make decisions regarding your health and personal care in the event you are unable to communicate your own wishes.

All three estate planning documents can be prepared by a notary public or lawyer. Simpson said people often think wills are more expensive and cumbersome then they actually are. It typically takes about a half hour to gather information for a will, and the paperwork can be signed a week later.

“We tend to try and do wills so you don’t need to update them all the time,” said Simpson.

“They’re really general and we try to cover all the scenarios. But having said that people need to review them to make sure they always work for their circumstances.”

Even if you have a husband and wife and they own everything together, and then the husband has Alzheimer’s or has a stroke, the wife officially doesn’t have the authority to sign on his behalf and vice versa.

The only way to get that authority would be to go to court and have a judge appoint that person and it’s very expensive.”

New probate rules also come into effect with the act, which will ensure consistency for probate applicants and streamline court processes to provide more timely service for British Columbians.

Whether a will is in place or not, these changes will have an affect on your estate. Those without wills should particularly pay attention, as the changes will have significant implications for your families.

Under the new statute, a spouse will be entitled to $300,000 from your estate, your household furnishings, and half of the residue of your estate (regardless of how many kids you have). While the larger sum of money may initially sound beneficial, the life estate clause is noticeably absent from the new legislation.

This means your spouse will not automatically have the right to remain in the matrimonial home after your passing. He or she will merely have the option to use the $300,000 entitlement to purchase the home from the estate (assuming he or she has enough money from the distribution of the residue to pay for it, or can obtain a mortgage). If your home is owned in joint tenancy with your spouse, this stipulation does not apply.

Better at Home program The Better at Home program in the Hope, Sunshine Valley and Fraser Canyon areas is currently accepting applications for clients and volunteers.

The program is designed to help seniors with non-medical, day-to-day tasks so that they can continue living independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities.

“It’s trying to get away from having isolated seniors,” said local program assistant Cindy Izawa. “It helps to keep them active, still doing stuff as much as they can, and socializing.”

Better at Home is a $20-million project that is funded by the provincial government and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland. Services are provided locally by Hope Care Transit and Boston Bar North Bend Enhancement Society, using a mix of volunteers and paid contractors.

The specific services offered are based on client needs and include transportation, friendly visiting, light yard work, snow shoveling, minor home repairs, grocery shopping and light housekeeping. Since the program is still fairly new,

Healthy Choices FOR SENIORS

Help on the line The new Seniors Health Care Support Line is now available to provide seniors and their families with support for health-care-related issues that they may have had trouble resolving.

Seniors who have issues accessing health-care services or with the health care they received can now call the Seniors Health Care Support Line to receive timely resolution of problems. This toll-free phone line is available Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling 1-877-952-3181. This line will supplement existing resolution mechanisms available to support seniors with complex needs who have concerns about their health care. Other ways seniors can get help with resolving care concerns include speaking with their health-care provider, contacting the Patient Care Quality Offices and independent Review Boards, health authorities or the relevant health professional colleges.
