Pioneer’s Timber Kings set to air this Sunday A new reality show starring the crew from our very own Pioneer Log Homes will air its first episode this weekend.

The Timber Kings will premiere this Sunday, Jan. 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada.

The docu-reality show follows the jobs and experiences of the master log smiths at Pioneer Log Homes as they build massive, multi-million dollar log homes

kansas millionaire is in the market for a massive 1,000 year old tree to become the centerpiece of his new home for a whopping cost of $80,000, and two of the Pioneer Log Homes crew push each other to breaking points in a fight for new equipment.

The stars are expected to attend their first poster signing sometime Friday, Jan. 3 at Walmart in Williams Lake.

Reservations open Jan. 2 for Bowron circuit Outdoor enthusiasts can start planning their trips to two popular BC Parks destinations - Berg Lake Trail and Bowron Lake canoe circuit - when reservations open for the 2014 season on Jan. 2.

Visitors should book their reservations through Discover Camping, BC Parks’ camping reservation system, making it easier for families to plan ahead.

Advanced preparation is required for adventures on the Berg Lake Trail and Bowron Lake canoe circuit because of the type of backcountry experiences involved. The limited facilities offered on these adventures ensure a true wilderness experience, so visitors need to be prepared.

The Berg Lake Trail and Bowron Lake canoe circuit are quite popular with local visitors and have a higher proportion of international travellers than most other BC Parks destinations.

By providing reservations for the entire season early in the year, visitors can properly plan while having the security of knowing a site will be available for their vacation.

In 2013, the Bowron Lake canoe circuit had 1,073 bookings and the Berg Lake Trail had 1,463 bookings, with approximately 25 per cent of bookings originating from outside of Canada.

ervations can be made for the period June 12 through Sept. 15.

This remote backcountry hiking trail covers 23 kilometres and climbs 800 metres, offering scenic views and experiences for hikers of all abilities.

Bowron Lake Provincial Park’s unparalleled canoe circuit can

be reserved from May 15 to Sept. 21. The entire circuit encompasses 116 kilometres of paddling across 10 lakes, and includes numerous portages.

The entire trip takes from six to 10 days to complete. The West Side experience is also available, which is less than half the circuit and

takes two to four days to complete.

Those interested in paddling the Bowron Lake canoe circuit should have some wilderness canoeing experience.

For those who like to plan ahead, Discover Camping provides information on the availability and amenities at 113 reservable campgrounds in 95 provincial parks throughout B.C., including nearby Horsefly Provincial Campground.

Reservations for those open on March 15, 2014. Group site reservations are available up to 12 months in advance.

The Bowron Lake canoe circuit had 119 bookings on the first day of reservations in 2013.

Night hunters keep conservation officers busy Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Reports of night hunting kept the conservation officers busy this fall, said Sgt. Len Butler of the BC Conservation Officer Services in Williams Lake.

“The complaints were coming through our RAAP line,” Butler said Monday. “We responded to the best of our abilities and did quite a few responses in

the middle of the night, chasing down night hunters.”

Butler said the number of night hunting complaints was up from previous years and the office is wrapping up its investigations now.

Fines can range from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on how serious the charges are.

“It’s completely illegal to night hunt and it’s dangerous,” Butler

said.

Most complaints have been about illegal hunting on the West Fraser road area across from the Rudy Johnson Bridge. Butler said night hunters are after anything that will move. “Since there are not many moose there, it’s mainly mule deer (that are targeted). We get calls from various parts of the zone with regards to night hunting.”

In other wildlife news, Butler said a bear that won’t go to sleep is causing grief in the Quesnel area.

“Sometimes that’s the way it is because they are getting too much food.”

He also said ice fish-

ing season has started and the public can expect to see Butler’s crew out more frequently on the lakes.

“The most serious thing is over-limits obviously, licensing, things of that variety,” he said.

MY BEST FRIEND Buckwheat Vanzuylekom and his x-ray that was taken after his injury was repaired.

Buckwheat is a lively young cat that is family to one of the Animal Care Hospital’s Animal Health Technologists Zoe Vanzuylekom.

Zoe’s mother drove him up to Williams Lake all the way from Port Coquitlam, BC as he could barely walk and was in a lot of pain. After doing some x-rays we confirmed that Buckwheat had a broken leg and dislocated ankle. We immediately put him on medication to help cope with the pain. Zoe assisted Dr. Magnowski in repairing the injury using a plate and screws. Meanwhile Buckwheat has taken up a temporary residence at the Animal Care Hospital while Zoe is away for Christmas. He is now able to walk again, but needs to have “strict rest” as Dr. Magnowski says until healing is complete.

Father expresses grief over fatal crash allegations

Cyril Vigeant is living every parent’s nightmare.

Last week Cyril’s son Kyle, 22, died following a single vehicle incident on Chimney Lake Road, which police have associated with theft and fraud.

“I would like the community to know my son was in no way involved with these people or these thefts,” Mr. Vigeant said Thursday. Kyle was born and raised in Williams Lake, and worked a variety of jobs in the community before settling in as an assistant manager at Best Buy Propane.

His dad says Kyle was known for his upbeat, reliable personality.

Stampede another roaring success

The 87th Annual Williams Lake Stampede was a roaring success, said Fred Thomas, Stampede Association president.

“It was another great year. We had great weather and good crowds,” he said.

The First Nations sang and drummed three songs, including one in honour of Fish Lake.

Once they were done, local GM manager Lorne Doerkson started off the singing of O Canada, to which several of the First Nations drummed along to.

After thanking the First Nations for the opening, panel chair Bill Ross said the panel is independent of the Government of Canada and has been appointed by the federal minister of the environment to conduct an environmental assessment of the proposed mine project.

July 25, 2013 Tolko announces capital investment in Williams Lake

Tolko announced Wednesday it will make capital investments at its two operations in Williams Lake.

“Between Lakeview and Soda Creek it’s going

to be around a $20 million investment this year,” Soda Creek plant manager Ryan Oliver told the Tribune.

Work is already underway at the Soda Creek mill, with ground preparation and paving, he added.

“We will be working on the foundation for the new building in September and all the equipment is ordered and being built right now.”

July 30, 2013 Williams Lake ranks third in overall crime, second in violent crime

The City of Williams Lake said in a recent press release it continues to focus on crime reduction measures.

The Crime Severity Index (CSI) produced by Statistics Canada for 2012 shows a 27 per cent reduction in the CSI value since the index was first published for the year 2008.

Crime has declined in Williams Lake every year between 2008 and 2011, with a small increase in crime statistics during the middle of 2012.

Some categories of property crime, such as vehicle theft, have decreased by as much as 80 per cent since 2008.

The city continues to work with the RCMP to address crime and the social factors behind it.

July 30, 2013 Fire guts apartment house

An early morning fire Friday has destroyed a three-story apartment house in the 100 block of Yorston Street in downtown Williams Lake.

All 16 people who lived there OK, but appear to have lost everything, said safer communities co-ordinator Dave Dickson.

Lightning strikes start multiple fires

Last Thursday evening’s spectacular lightning show, felt throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre, resulted in 29 lightning-caused wildfires overnight throughout the region.

“They are all just spot fires, the largest one is 0.2 hectares so they’re all pretty small,” CFC fire information officer Greig Bethel told the Tribune Friday morning.

While thousands of lightning strikes caused the new wildfires, most of the lightning was accompanied by precipitation that helped keep fires small in size, the biggest at 0.2 hectares, Bethel said.

On Friday Wildfire Management Branch crews, with air tankers, helicopters and other equipment were actioned to battle the new blazes.

Dentistry focus of four-day blitz in Anaham

Between July 25 and 28, the UBC school of dentistry offered a dental mission in co-operation with the Tl’et’inqox-t’in (Anaham) government office.

A team of eight dentists, a dental hygienist, a dental assistant, two instructors, 15 students and two Rotarians travelled to Anaham, and with the help of health centre staff delivered dental care.

“It was the first time we’d been to Anaham,” University of B.C. Dean of Dentristy Dr. Charles Shuler said. “We’ve done clinics around the province, some in First Nations reserves on Vancouver Island and in First Nations clinics in the Downtown Eastside.”

Stolen vehicles not recovered, inspector says

The majority of vehicles stolen in the Williams Lake area in July have not been recovered, said Insp. Warren Brown during a six month crime stats update to city council Tuesday.

Of the 12 vehicles stolen in July, 75 per cent have not been located, whereas 95 per cent of vehicles stolen between January and June were located.

Typically that means they’ve been dumped in remote areas and will probably be found during hunting season or spring when people are getting out into the bush, Brown explained.

“Many of the vehicles that have been stolen we find there to be a tie between ourselves and the Alexis Creek detachment,” Brown said explaining the two detachments are working together on some strategies.

RCMP moving to digital encryption for communication

Williams Lake RCMP will be joining other detachments across Canada and switching from unencrypted analog communications to digital with encryption.

It’s a change that means the public will no longer be able to listen in on police activity by a scanner.

“I cannot wait for this new system,” said RCMP Insp. Warren Brown

Thursday. “It will allow the police to talk and share information that cannot be intercepted.”

“We find that at most drug houses and active criminal safe houses they utilize scanners for their own benefit. They want to know where police are, staging fake calls at fake locations, etc. They utilize the interception of our communications for their benefit.”

Advisor and Tribune papers unite

Black Press is making its own news with the decision to amalgamate its newspapers the Williams Lake Tribune, the Cariboo Advisor and the Tribune Weekend.

The move, which will begin Sept. 4, will see Black Press offer two completely free newspapers to more than 10,500 homes throughout the region.

This will include a Wednesday Williams Lake Tribune edition and a Friday Weekend Advisor edition — both filled with the award-winning content that has made the Tribune the community paper of record for more than 75 years.

Tribune publisher Lisa Bowering said she’s thrilled to be able to offer two fresh newspapers at a broader reach.

“I am so excited with the amalgamation of our three great papers,” Bowering said. “We want to give our community the absolute best newspaper we can with the broadest reach.

That is why this amalgamation of the Tribune, its weekend edition and the Cariboo Advisor is such exciting news.”

The final day of statements and presentations during the federal review panel hearings for the proposed New Prosperity mine project took place on Friday at CJ’s Southwestern Grill.

The event began with singers and drummers in a procession along Highway 97, accompanied by RCMP vehicles and ended after the panel heard from several speakers, voicing opposition or support for the project.

Dr. John Meech from Share the Cariboo Chilcotin Resources Society and Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce, who said he is “very disappointed with government agencies for its obfuscation and fence-sitting,” and that there is a desperate need for the economic stimulation New Prosperity Mine would bring.

Coroner’s inquest into shooting death recommends improvements to rural emergency care

The BC Coroners Service has released its public inquest into the policeinvolved shooting death of Justin Zinser on Sept. 24, 2011.

The report recommends several improvements to rural ambulance and police service.

The inquest took place from Tuesday, Aug. 6 to Thursday, Aug. 8 in the Williams Lake Courthouse.

Presiding coroner Donita Kuzma made five recommendations following the inquest, including recommendations to the RCMP, the B.C. Ambulance Service and the Ministry of Justice.

Zinser, who was 23 at the time, was shot and killed by an RCMP officer at Nimpo Lake near Williams Lake after police were called to a domestic dispute.

Chilcotin River fishery remains open

The First Nations fishery on the Chilcotin River will continue Chief Joe Alphonse Tsilhqot’in National Government chair said.

In mid August, Fisheries and Oceans Canada approached the TNG to discuss the possibility of closing the fishery, but the First Nations said they would not accept a closure, Alphonse said.

“We said we’d prevent fisheries officers from getting to the river and we would keep the river open for our fishermen.”

The rationale for the closure was that the water temperature was too warm and the fish were all dying, yet First Nations weren’t seeing those impacts.

“The fish were not dying,” Alphonse said.

First Nations in the Chilcotin have a 24 hour seven-day fishery and the only way members will accept closures is for conservation concerns, he added.

RCMP arrest city councillor

Williams Lake city councillor Surinderpal

Rathor has been charged with obstruction of justice, police said.

The news broke Thursday when Const. Lesley Smith, media relations with North District RCMP, issued a press release stating Rathor was arrested that morning after a warrant was issued.

“These charges stem from an investigation where on Dec. 24, 2012, Surinderpal Rathor assisted police as a translator for a criminal code case. Rathor allegedly interfered with that investigation beyond his role as a translator,” Smith said, refusing to comment further on the case.

A complete nesting failure at the only confirmed White American Pelican breeding lake in B.C. has left local wildlife biologist Julie Steciw extremely disappointed and searching for answers.

“This year I was looking forward and very optimistic that we would have a successful breeding season at Stum Lake,” Steciw said.

Steciw has been monitoring the endangered birds at Stum Lake for Natural Resource Operations since mid-1990 and says a total failure can happen for a number of reasons — human disturbance, wildlife disturbance or low flying aircraft.

She doesn’t know what is responsible this time around.

Residents want Johnson Street left alone

Residents living in and

around Johnson Street in Williams Lake say they are upset with proposed improvements to Highway 97 that could see traffic exit off the highway and into their residential areas along McKinnon Road and Johnson Street.

“Johnson Street is residential and it should stay that way,” Johnson Street resident Gordon Stevenson said in an interview Tuesday.

He said residents don’t oppose a light-controlled intersection being installed at Highway 97 and Toop Road, but they don’t want to see the intersection being connected to Johnson Street.

Residents living in and around Chilcotin Road School in Williams Lake should beware that a cougar has been seen in the area said Sgt. Len Butler of the Conservation Officer Services Friday.

“We’re doing a monitoring of the cougar, we’re not trying to catch it right now,” Butler confirmed. On Thursday evening, Conservation Officer Jeff Tyre patrolled the area in and around the school and along Woodland Drive.

“He stopped into the school this morning and advised everybody of what was going on,” Butler said.

Butler said there are “so many” cougars in the region and it’s not unusual for them to be around.

In this second half of the year we have covered many changes in the community including one to ourselves.

In August Black Press announced the amalgamation of the Williams Lake Tribune, The Weekender and the Cariboo Advisor, bringing a new combined free product to the community.

The papers are now published Wednesdays and Fridays, and also offer full, free access to the paper’s news website.

In 2013 the community also witnessed its second environmental Federal Panel Review regarding a proposed gold and copper mine at Fish Lake and its later findings that the New Prosperity project would cause significant adverse environmental impacts.

Stay tuned to 2014 for a federal decision on whether that project will proceed.

Meanwhile, students and teachers adjusted to a new one-school, two-campus model for the local jr/sr high school this year, as former Kwaleen and Glendale students also adjusted to new schools.

Though we received disappointing news about the cancellation of the Discovery Coast ferry route from Bella Coola recently, there were also many good news stories in the second half of 2013 including the opening of a new public health unit at Thompson Rivers University North, the completion of a new mill and the hiring of 150 additional workers at Gibraltar Mine and plans to open an autism centre at the CDC. 2014 looks to be equally as interesting, particularly in showbiz where our very own crew from Pioneer Log Homes will be starring in the reality show, Timber Kings starting January 5.

Who knows, maybe the Timber Kings will be the next Duck Dynasty.

A new year and a turkey-free house After the sandwiches, the soup and the turkey delight casserole, my new year’s resolution is: ‘I’m finished with turkey forever.’

Tried a little ice fishing over the holidays, got smart and used the chain saw to cut through the ice.

Got dumb and stood behind it, thus soaking myself thoroughly when I hit water turning myself into a human icicle.

Also got one helluva shock plugging in the Christmas lights this year, something wrong with the outside socket. My hair actually stood on end, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase: “Lighten Up!” Got together with neighbours our age for the New Year’s celebration.

None of those funny hats, noisemakers and (supported by liquid refreshments), strident attempts to be happy, like we did in our youth.

Nope, nobody wanted to count backwards from 10, we all wanted to be in bed by ten.

So we sat around the campfire chatting like Girl Guides, looking at the full moon and setting off a few fireworks, to dog barks and resounding echoes among the hills.

Unfortunately, one rocket went sideways and ended up in a snowbank.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Skeena the black Lab retrieved it, running off down the road while it was still spewing sparks.

A couple of us chased her ex-

pecting her head to blow off at any second, but fortunately, the rocket fizzled out.

Cheers went up! Carmen called in the proceedings; ‘The Pressy Lake Symphony of Fire.’

We held our first skating party over the holidays and built a rink on the lake, inviting all our neighbours to come.

The crowd included about 30 people from eight to 80.

There were hot dogs and hot chocolate for the kids gleefully standing around the bonfire where their constant poking at it with sticks set showers of sparks into the air adding to the festive occasion.

Got a rough and tumble hockey game going and I was put to tend goal, (having not displayed any aptitude at either passing the puck, or being much of a hockey player.) My slap shot sucked, said one kid. Anyhow, I managed to stop a few pucks, just as long as I could see them coming for five minutes.

Now it would not be a good party without sending someone to the hospital and we sent two ladies with broken arms. After you haven’t been on skates for 20 years...well!

They gracefully said they had a great time up till then. We have now started the tradition of the Little Pressy Lake Annual Broken Arm Skating Party.

The other mishap was that a flock of children ate all the rum balls before the adults could get to them.

This created an unusually giddy atmosphere, which rubbed off on the six dogs, present, making things slightly hazardous when trekking to the bathroom.

About 10 years ago I started to keep track of my time.

(I tried to keep track of how I spent my money too, but that led nowhere. I spent it just the same.)

So every New Year’s day, I look over my calendar and see how my past year went. It’s quite revealing, as I am able to gauge what

I put most of my time into and what seemed most relevant or important to me.

As they say, where your attention is, you are. The first year I did it I was shocked at how much television I watched.

The following year I managed to cut my TV time in half and a year after that, by a third.

What was amazing to me however, was how much time I spent doing things like working, reading, gardening and what not, as compared to other years.

I usually spent the same amount of time doing the same things. Creatures of habit they say?

You bet, if I am to go by my time sheet. It is then I resolve to change some habitual patterns.

“But you can’t just throw bad habits out the window,” to paraphrase Mark Twain; “You have to drag them down the stairs one step at a time, kicking and screaming.”

A look back at 2013

Putting pen to paper is not generally Bee Hooker’s style.

Normally the Big Lake logger is busy working at a new Imperial Metals mine site near Dease Lake.

But these days when he is home, however, he’s part of a working group that’s been keeping tabs on a proposed community forest by the city of Williams Lake and the Williams Lake Indian Band that would involve land near the communities of Big Lake, Horsefly, Miocene and Pine Valley.

“They submitted their final application to the Ministry of Forests on Aug. 22 so we had a meeting last Sunday and I was really choked no representatives were there from the city or the band,” Hooker said Monday.

Hooker is opposed to the venture, which he says does not partner with rural communities.

Sept. 18, 2013 Rash of auto thefts impacts lakecity

Two adult males are free and awaiting court dates, after being arrested Monday for allegedly stealing a customer’s 2001 Dodge pickup truck from the Gustafson’s Chrysler dealership and crashing it into the Sheep Creek bridge.

“They aren’t prolific offenders, but are known to police,” said Williams Lake RCMP Insp. Warren Brown.

Due to the number of recent stolen vehicles, the detachment is increasing the number of road checks and patrols in targeted locations in order to locate and recover stolen vehicles and to hopefully, deter more thefts, Brown said.

Waterfall, and many other parents in the area, are concerned about bussing times for their young children, which have resulted in students arriving to their newly assigned Chilcotin Road School a full 45 minutes before school starts, and often even before supervisors are on-site.

SD 27 superintendent Mark Thiessen said he sympathizes with the early bus pick up, but is not committing to adding another bus to the route just yet.

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) North and Interior Health are opening the first health center of its kind in B.C., right here in Williams Lake, where students and the general public can access a full-time family nurse practitioner for many of their health care needs.

Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett joined more than 600 guests at Gibraltar Mine, north of Williams Lake, to celebrate the successful completion of its new mill and the hiring of 150 additional workers Sept.

The addition of the new employees makes Gibraltar one of the largest employers in the Cariboo. The mine, operated by Taseko Mines Limited, just completed the recent $325-million development, which included the new facility and addition to its mining fleet. Sept. 25, 2013 Cariboo woodlot owner wins two awards

Cariboo woodlot owner Rod Krimmer has received two awards.

the $2,500 Minister’s Award for Innovation and Excellence in Woodlot Management, along with a separate $2,500 regional award for his work in B.C.’s southern Interior.

“I was aware of the regional award because it recognized that I’ve been with the Cariboo Woodlot Association for 18 years and recently moved to Hagensborg,” Krimmer said Tuesday in Williams Lake.

The minister’s award, however, was a complete surprise and a “huge honour,” he added.

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure showcased an impressive plan this week to upgrade Highway 97 just south of town, with two new overpasses and six more kilometres of four-laning.

Sept. 27, 2013 City council makes room for backyard bees and hens

Williams Lake city council has given the green light for backyard bees and hens in certain residential zones within city limits, but not without setting some strict guideline bylaws in place.

During a public hearing held Tuesday at city hall, council heard arguments for and against four bylaws it later approved.

City planning technician Chris Hutton said the city will go ahead with a controlled rollout for hens and bees, effective Jan. 1, 2014.

The regulations being introduced are some of the tighter than any other municipality, he added.

A sea of orange filled Boitanio Park as hundreds of people gathered in Williams Lake Monday morning to mark the first-ever Orange Shirt Day, honouring residential school survivors and those who did not survive.

“There was a photograph of a body builder from Italy wearing an orange shirt today on our Facebook page,” said Phyllis Webstad. She’s the Canoe Creek band member whose story about having her brand new orange shirt taken away when she arrived at the St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School at the age of six years old inspired the creation of Orange Shirt Day. Standing with her mother, father, grandfather and aunt, Webstad said every child matters, even if they are an adult.

“At the Truth and Reconciliation event in Vancouver I learned reconciliation is not just for First Nations and white people,” Webstad said. “It’s all of Canada, including the Jewish, Japanese and Chinese. We all need to be a part of reconciliation.”

Oct. 4, 2013 RCMP search for missing Quesnel woman

Quesnel RCMP are trying to locate Caitlin Murray of Quesnel.

Murray, 21, was last seen on September 30 on video surveillance at approximately 12:45 a.m., parking her car near the Fraser Bridge Hotel in West Quesnel, RCMP said in a press release Tuesday.

“Family and friends are worried about her well-being and are unable to locate her,” north district media relations said. “ Quesnel RCMP have searched the immediate area including the foot bridge, the Fraser River and surrounding parks.”

“It’s been our observation that regardless of what colour the elephant is, organized crime is nearby,” Brown told the Cariboo Regional District board Friday.

During recent months, the CRD board has been debating whether to rezone area to accomodate the changing legislation around medical marijuana grow-ops. On Friday the board invited Brown to aid in the discussion.

Oct. 11, 2013 Scout Island receives hydro makeover

BC Hydro crews were busy Thursday putting the finishing touches on an ambitious improvement project at Scout Island aimed at saving birds and increasing power reliability.

“This project has been in the works for a while now and we’re excited to see it through to completion,” said BC Hydro design technician work leader Andrew Hasselaar.

Hasselaar said the reason for the project is three-fold; beautification, elimination of bird mortality due to the overhead power lines and increased power reliability.

“We’re looking for a system that runs itself and has little impact to the environment. That’s our goal.”

The new system will see four poles and overhead power lines replaced with 1,800 linear metres of underground duct.

Oct 16, 2013 Gentles ordered to stand trial

Martin Gentles has been ordered to stand trial in B.C. Supreme Court, Crown spokesperson Neil MacKenzie said. An arrangement hearing is scheduled for Nov. 18 to set the dates of the trial.

Gentles is charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, causing an accident resulting in bodily harm, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 22, 2012 on Carson Drive in Williams Lake where Rayel MacDonald was killed and her friend Alysha Mullet was seriously injured.

The order comes after a three-day preliminary inquiry, held in Williams Lake Provincial Court between Oct. 7 to Oct. 9, where several witnesses, including both RCMP and civilian, were interviewed by Crown and defence counsels in front of presiding Justice Victor Galbraith.

At the onset of the trial, a publication ban was put in place.

by Yunesit’in (Stone) First Nations to ban the legal limited entry hunt for moose in the Chilcotin.

Hamm, who has been a moose hunter for more than 40 years, said he’s angered by the two sets of hunting rules for First Nations and non-First Nations and blames the

government for the situation.

“We should all have to buy a hunting license, buy a tag, and adhere by the same rules,” Hamm said. “Do you know what would happen if you called and said you thought Doug Hamm shot a cow moose? Those guys would be up at my property, tearing my freezer apart ... I’d be hung out to dry.”

Hamm prides himself on being an ethical and legal hunter and in fact believes a 100 per cent ban on moose hunting in the area is needed to recover the population.

“I love moose hunting, my whole family loves moose hunting, but there shouldn’t be any allowed in the Cariboo because we are virtually losing our moose in the Cariboo area.”

Oct. 18, 2013 Fisheries worker honoured for saving man from river

Three men who rescued a fishing guide from the Quesnel River on Sept. 20 have been recog-

nized for bravery by the deputy minister of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Northern Shuswap Tribal Council fisheries technician Andrew Mishue is one of the men, but said the rescue was all about “being in the right place at the right time.”

Mishue and Shane Kalyn, a technician from DFO, were out flying with Highland Helicopters pilot Steve Goodliffe to do a routine Chinook count on the Quesnel River.

“We landed on a sandbar to take off the front door and take the water temperature when we learned there was a guy in the river,” Mishue said Wednesday before he formally accepted the award.

Earlier that morning a fishing guide from Northern Lights Fishing Lodge in Likely had beached a jet boat on the same sandbar, which is located downstream from Quesnel Forks. When the wind picked up, the boat went with it.

As the helicopter landed on the sandbar, an angler from Gabriolo Island ran up and said the guide had gone into the water hoping to retrieve the boat. He had been in the water almost half an hour and was running into trouble, the angler told them.

Last Thursday, Oct. 17, RCMP were advised of the fire on the bridge that meets at the junction of the Taseko Lake Road and Yunesit’in (Stone) Reserve, said Sgt. Mike Hacker of the Alexis Creek detachment Monday.

The fire occurred around 7 p.m., he added.

Officers are attempting to determine the cause of the fire and while the bridge remains intact, traffic is unable to cross the bridge at this time.

“The main damage was primarily from heat,” Hacker said. “Any logging companies and motoring public are asked to remain clear of the area while the investigation continues.”

Names of the Lake City Secondary School campuses were changed back to their former names after considerable debate by school trustees Tuesday evening.

The Western Campus name will be changed to Columneetza Campus reflecting the school’s former name as a secondary school.

The Carson Campus will become the Williams Lake Campus in keeping with that school’s former secondary school name.

The trustees made the decision after a lengthy debate on Roberts Rules of Order surrounding the bylaw that set up the first name change back in May. Since then the trustees have been lobbied by the public to change the campus names back to their historical names.

As the morning sky began to emerge in Williams Lake early Wednesday people gathered in Boitanio Park for a traditional send off of the Indigenous Land Title Express.

The bus, carrying youth, elders and community leaders, will travel from Williams Lake to Ottawa, making stops in every province, and will arrive in time to take in the Nov. 7 historic appeal of the Tsilhqot’in Nation’s Aboriginal Title Case being heard at the Supreme Court of Canada.

“It’s a nervous but exciting time,” said Tl’etinqox’t’in (Anaham) Chief Joe Alphonse before the express bus departed.

Litigation began more than 20 years ago for the Tsilhqo’tin people’s Aboriginal rights to hunt, trap and trade throughout the entire claim area, including the right to capture and use wild horses.

Some of the elders who testified then are making the journey this time.

Others are along in spirit because they have passed on, Xeni Gwet’in (Nemiah Valley) Roger William said.

Nov. 6, 2013 New Prosperity Mine report released

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency Panel has released its final report for Taseko’s proposed New Prosperity GoldCopper Mine west of Williams Lake.

While the panel makes no recommendations as to whether or not the project should proceed and said the final decision will be up to the federal government, the panel said the project would result in adverse environmental effects.

“The key ones being on water quality of Fish Lake, on fish habitat in Fish Lake, on current use of the lands and resources for traditional purposes of some Aboriginal groups, and on their cultural heritage,” the panel noted in its executive summary.

Nov. 8, 2013 Memories of Second World War pilot

Frank Burgess of Williams Lake said the Distinguished Flying Cross he received in 1943 was because he was very lucky.

Reflecting on his experiences as a Second World War pilot the Wednesday before Remembrance Day, the 93-year-old said he lost so many friends in the war.

“I had only been with the Royal Air Force Squadron 61 Group 5 Bomber Squad about one week when I realized it was a hopeless case,” he recalled.

Fetching his treasured pilot’s log book from a bookshelf in his living room, Burgess turned to an entry he made on Dec. 16, 1943.

That’s the day that resulted in his DFC medal.

“I was a pilot in charge of an aircraft detailed to attack Berlin,” he recalled. “I got the award because I carried on when I could have turned back.”

Nov. 8, 2013 Rural crime rash prompts response

A continued rash of property crimes in and around Alexis Creek has provoked residents to form a Citizens on Patrol program.

“We had about 25 people out to a meeting here last night,” said Alexis Creek Sgt. Michael Hacker Wednesday.

“It was the third meeting we’ve had. We’re still in the organizing phase.”

Hacker said there has been an increase in stolen

vehicles, break-and-enters and property crime in the area due to offenders between Williams Lake and Alexis Creek returning to their respective communities to commit crime.

“Those particular offences are most visible to the public,” Hacker said.

“Other types of crime generally don’t have the same kind of impact that property crime does.”

Most of the thieves, if they are prolific offenders, are pretty good at what they do and hard to attach to the crimes they commit, he said, making it a challenge for policing success.

“When we do make an arrest we’re usually able to make a big difference because it’s one person or FIR

Nov. 13, 2013 Gun shots fired into lakecity home

An early morning report of gun shots on Remembrance Day in Williams Lake that has led to the arrest of two men with several outstanding warrants was not a random act, said Williams Lake RCMP Insp. Warren Brown. At approximately 4 a.m. on Nov. 11 police responded to a report of gun shots in the area of Carson Drive and Fifth Avenue, located about four blocks from the city’s downtown.

City lifts boil water advisory issued for the weekend

Williams Lake has never seen more snow fall in a 24-hour period than it did last Friday between Nov. 15 and Nov. 16. — at least since Environment Canada started recording snowfall back in 1961. “You were the top of the list as the winter storm’s centre went right through Williams Lake,” Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist said Tuesday.

The Williams Lake Airport received 51 cm, with the next highest being the Coquihalla Summit where they received 35 cm, and Allison Pass which received 32 cm.

Don DeGagne and the City of Williams Lake slated to begin today (Monday) has been postponed until some time in the new year, Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook confirmed Monday.

The trial was slated to start (today) Nov. 25 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, and was expected to last four days.

Originally DeGagne was to begin working as the city’s chief administrative officer on Mar. 1, but was told a few days before the start date the city would not be hiring him.

What is the secret of a solid and holy marriage? For myself, freely choosing to live a celibate life, I am probably the wrong person to give advice; however, I will throw in my two bits. Scenario case: a boy is brought up in a selfish way and meets a girl, who also, likewise, is brought up in a self-focused world, and they get married, and it falls apart. Perhaps, even before the marriage began, it was already doomed. Imagine a person of 25 years of me, I, me – marrying another 25 year old self-centered person: Are they going to change over night? Probably not. The marriage is going to need a lot of undoing and self-changing before it can even begin.

Scenario of self-change: Imagine a husband coming home after a hard day’s work. He is thinking, “When I get home, I am going to throw myself on the couch, grab a beer (which he perhaps expects his wife will provide for him), and watch television”. Stop! Let’s rewind this scenario case with a different approach. The husband is coming home after a hard day’s work. He is thinking, “My wife has probably had a hard day today, so when I get home, I will make sure that she is able to sit in the couch, I will give her a shoulder massage, and I will say,

He starts to change himself. And when she sees him change, she starts to….(guess how it ends?).

Before we can change anyone else, we need to change ourselves first.

We also need to prepare our children for marriage (or a life of service in a different way) from a very young age. We need to teach them sacrifice, give them chores to do, and self-denial. Delayed gratification is another good one: Little Johnny wants a chocolate bar, well, if he is really hungry, then give him a carrot stick, but if he can wait, then the chocolate bar. Johnny wants a pop, well, he can have water now, or if he waits he can have pop. Is it worth the wait? Can the gift of sex wait till marriage?

Imagine this: Both husband and wife trying to out-do each other in service? Self-sacrifice and vicious competition to wash the other’s feet, to lay down one’s own life for the other, and trying to improve each day. Oh! How beautiful marriage can be!

All this has to be seen in the context of God being the “bond” that keeps the two together. From the Gospel of Matthew (19) referring to the creation account in Genesis:“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?

2013: Rustlers make club history with sweep July 4, 2013 Lakecity teams sweep Stampede rugby

History was made Sunday at the Williams Lake Stampede Rugby Tournament when Williams Lake teams, for the first time in the event’s 33-year existence, swept all of the tournament’s divisions.

For the Williams Lake Rustlers men’s side the tournament win signalled the end of a 30-year drought — they first won it in 1983 — and also the club’s second championship buckle in its storied history.

The Williams Lake Hustlers ladies’ squad also etched its name on the division’s championship trophy for the fourth consecutive time — a feat never before accomplished at the tournament.

And, in the 40-plus Old Boys Division, Williams Lake survived a brutally physical matchup against Abbotsford to win 10-5 and take the championship.

July 11, 2013 Prospects battle to bronze

It was with heavy hearts that the Williams Lake Prospects — an under-16 minor fastball team — travelled to Clearwater last week for the B.C. Provincial Boys Fastball Championships.

The day prior to the tournament one of the team’s coaches from 100 Mile House died suddenly. His son, who plays for the Prospects, decided he still wanted to play, and his teammates were right there to back him up.

The Prospects went on to not only play in the tournament, but overcame adversity to bring home a bronze medal.

July 11, 2013 The best in the province

The U16 Williams Lake Girls Storm, for at least the next 365 days, can call themselves the best in the province.

The girls outshone seven other teams from around B.C., winning the final in spectacular fashion, to become the Girls Provincial ‘B’ Cup champions at the Inter-River Park in North Vancouver last week.

“This group of girls has been together for two years, and we have always had this goal in the back of our minds,” said Storm coach Nick Iachetta. “This win is a testament to their dedication and hard work, and is a sign of things to come for Williams Lake.”

Aug. 20, 2013 Duo rides to top spots at Canadians

There aren’t many in the area who can lay claim to the title of Canadian High School Rodeo Finals champion.

Ryan Jasper did it in bull riding in 2011 and, years back, brothers Ian Pare (bareback riding, 1999) and Rease Pare (steer wrestling, 2003), Keely Durrell (breakaway roping, 2003) and Willee Twan (team roping, 1998) achieved the same goal.

This year, however, 150 Mile House’s Chad Braaten earned the accolade at the event, hosted in Nanton, Alta. from July 25-27. And, it came in what he called possibly his most unexpected event — boys’ cutting.

“I hadn’t really expected to do that well, especially in the boys’ cutting,” Braaten said.

“If I thought I was going to do well in anything it would have been team roping, which ended up being my worst.”

Both Braaten and local Matt Armes earned their spots at the Canadian High School Rodeo Finals and the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, WY., July 14-21 through posting consistently strong performances throughout their high school rodeo season.

Aug. 13, 2013 Riders put talent on display

Rounds 14 and 15 of the B.C. Motocross Association Championship Series were in Williams Lake Aug. 10-11, and Williams Lake riders were at the forefront for much of the weekend.

The two-day event, which continues Sept. 14-15 in Williams Lake with rounds 15 and 16, featured more than 300 entries showcasing riders ages four to 50-plus from around the province.

Williams Lake pro rider Brock Hoyer also hosted a riding clinic for several youth Saturday night at the track.

“We saw loads of great, natural talent,” said Tammy Deausy, treasurer with the event-host Williams Lake Dirt Riders Association. “It was an amazing race weekend.”

The BCMA Championship Series works on a points system based on two races per event each day. Each rider’s points are then tallied after each day to award an overall

winner in each class.

Steleoff, Campsall, defend national archery titles

Two Williams Lake archers successfully defended their titles Aug. 2-10 at the Canadian 3D Archery Championships in Woodstock, NB. Fred Streleoff, now a twotime national champion in the men’s instinctive recurve class, and Al Campsall, now a 10-time national champion in the men’s compound division, both fought through incessant downpour through most of the competition to repeat as Canadian champions.

In October both Campsall and Streleoff will travel to Sassari, Italy to compete as members of Team Canada at the 2013 World 3D Archery Championships.

Campsall is representing Canada in the compound men’s division.

Streleoff will shoot in the instinctive men’s recurve division.

Canadian Waterskiing Championships in Abbotsford.

At nationals Conley skied in both the Men’s Open division in tricks and in the Boys 3 division in slalom, trick and jump.

Conley qualified to ski in the men’s open trick division, open to all ages of competitors, based on his scores from throughout the season.

Additionally, Conley was named to the Canadian under-17 team for the Can Am Challenge in St. Louis over the September long weekend.

Conley has attended the competition as a junior the last three years, but said he is extremely happy to be chosen for the under-17 team.

2013: Hoyer makes top ten in Canada Aug. 20, 2013 Hoyer races to eighth overall at motocross nationals Williams Lake pro motocross rider Brock Hoyer will be slapping a No. 8 on the front of his Yamaha to kick off next year’s race season.

That’s because the 26-year-old Williams Lake native finished eighth overall at the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals, which wrapped up Sunday at the Walton Raceway in Walton, Ont. “That was my goal going out when I started the series, to finish top 10 and come home with a single-digit number,” Hoyer said.

“It’s pretty sweet to be ranked in the top 10 ­best in Canada. There are even four or five Americans in our top 10.”

Energy Motocross Nationals marked the sixth kick at the can for Hoyer who, in past years, had decided to not continue on with the eastern races of the series. It was his best overall result since turning pro.

Roger William, on Sunday at the Redstone Rodeo, amassed enough points to defend his title from last year and be crowned the first ever King of the Hill mountain racing champion.

“It worked out again,” William said with a chuckle.

William won this year’s overall title at the Williams Lake Stampede mountain race and parlayed that with another win at the Nemiah Valley Rodeo before racing Saturday

Aug. 27, 2013 Lakers sail to slo-pitch league championship The Williams Lake Lakers performed what, up until Sunday, had not been achieved

during this year’s Williams Lake Slo-Pitch League season.

The Lakers beat the Williams Lake Rowdies, 15-11, along with capturing the Williams Lake Slo-Pitch League Year End Tournament ‘A’ division championship and handing the Rowdies their first loss of the season.

The win came on the heels of a blockbuster tilt earlier in the day that saw the Rowdies hang on for a 19-18 victory in the quarterfinal. As a result, the Lakers battled past the Rookies to earn their final berth through the back side of the draw.

Kyler Hunik (2 HR) and Paul Grinder (1 HR) both had hot bats for the Lakers in the final.

The Lakers marched out to an early 6-0 lead and held on for the duration. The Rowdies tied the contest at 7-7 in the fourth inning before the Lakers scored five runs in the fifth to run away with the contest.

2013: Boxer brings home Maritime title Four Williams Lake Youth Soccer Association rep teams returned from Chilliwack with medals around their necks.

The Williams Lake Storm under-14 girls team and the Williams Lake Storm under-16 boys teams both marched away from the tournament with gold medals. The Williams Lake Storm under-17 girls team and the Williams Lake Storm under-11 girls teams both won silver medals.

The tournament took place Aug. 22-25 and comes on the heels of the Provincials 6 championships just weeks prior.

Sept. 18, 2013 Two Williams Lake players named to Cariboo Cougars The Cariboo Cougars of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League have finalized its roster for the 2013/14 season.

And after two very competitive training camps and four exhibition games 20 young men from Northern B.C. — including two from Williams Lake — have made the Cariboo Cougars.

Williams Lake minor hockey products Chase Dubois and Colton Thomas were among those selected for the Cougars.

The duo both played their 2012/13 seasons as members of the Williams Lake Bantam Rep Timberwolves, helping lead their club to a provincial championship berth.

Sept. 20, 2013 Williams Lake wins Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup — a battle between four golf teams representing their respective northern B.C. cities and towns — had, up until Sunday, never been won by a visiting team.

Sept. 25, 2013 Historic Braves honoured by WHL’s Giants

The historic Alkali Braves hockey club was recently honoured by the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants.

The Giants, hosting the Victoria Royals in its season opener, donned a newly-designed Braves’ tribute jersey in recognition of the contributions made to the game by one of the province’s original First Nations hockey teams.

The sweater, featuring a lazy cross on the crest, is the brand of the Alkali Lake Ranch where many of the hockey players on the Braves’ team worked.

The Alkali Braves, led by Alec Antoine (known as Sylista), won a B.C. Northern League title in 1931, earning them the chance to play against the powerhouse Vancouver Commercials later that year.

Sept. 27, 2013 Boxer brings home Maritime title

After battling to victory through one of the toughest fights in his career, local boxer Stuart McLellan is back home in Williams Lake with a new title, an impressive belt and the scars to prove it.

“It was a very tough fight,” said Stuart, who was back in training Tuesday evening at the Williams Lake Boxing Club.

“I think it was the toughest fight and probably the dirtiest fight I’ve ever fought.”

Stuart, 26, won the middleweight match-up and the Maritime Title at the Halifax Forum in Halifax, N.S. Sept. 21 by unanimous decision (99-91, 96-94 and 9991) following 10 gruelling rounds.

The fighter hopes to get a few more bouts under his belt after that before taking on his next challenge — possibly a North American title.

Two Williams Lake archers fired impressive results at the 2013 World 3D Archery Championships in Sassari, Italy earlier this month.

Fred Streleoff and Al Campsall, both members of the local Cariboo Archers, represented Team Canada at the event after finishing first in their respective classes at the Canadian 3D Archery Championships Aug. 2-10 in Woodstock, NB. Streleoff, competing in his first world championships, finished fifth overall — narrowly missing the podium — in the Instinctive Recurve category.

Campsall, at his second world championships, finished 30th in the competitive Compound category — one place better than his last result at the world championships two years ago in Austria.

They couldn’t have gone out any better way.

Playing in their final match in PACWEST, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s soccer team captured their third straight league title.

TRU sweeper, 150 Mile House fourth-year player Laura Smylie, was named the Playoff MVP. The WolfPack downed the Quest Kermodes 1-0 at Mariner Field in Nanaimo on Sunday. It was the first time in three years TRU won the gold medal in regulation time.

Smylie, meanwhile, had a hat trick in the team’s semifinal victory over Langara on Saturday.

“Laura looked puzzled when they announced her name,” the TRU coach laughed.

“I think she thought they read out the wrong name. But she was so consistent all weekend and came up with the big kicks when we needed them.”

With the PACWEST title victory TRU ran its overall 2013 record to 15 wins and two ties.

They have won their last six matches in a row.

2013: Ilnicki plays with Team Canada Nov. 1, 2013 Ilnicki, Team Canada, set for international tour

Riske Creek’s Jake Ilnicki is soaking it all in right now.

The 21-year-old rugby standout and Williams Lake secondary graduate is in Toronto this week preparing to suit up for the Canadian men’s 15s squad this Sunday, Nov. 3, against the New Zealand Maori All Blacks in front of 16,000 spectators and a nationally televised audience at BMO Field.

The match against New Zealand kicks off a four-game tour that will take the Canadian side to Georgia, Romania and Portugal for international rugby competition.

For Ilnicki the tour represents the results of many years of hard work.

He’s climbed the ranks from Williams Lake, to the University of Victoria Vikings, to the New Zealand College Rifles Rugby Football Club, to the under-20 Canadian national team in April of 2012. Ilnicki’s current club then brought him back to New Zealand as a member of the Auckland Colts. Most recently Ilnicki played three games as a member of Canada’s Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) club featuring teams from the U.S., Argentina

and Uruguay.

“This means a lot to me,” Ilincki said. “I guess all my hard work’s kind of shown and now I’ve just got to get out there on the field and put it all out there into the game.

I’ve been training hard and I’m just excited to get out there on the field playing with some of the top players in the world.”

Nov. 6, 2013 Williams Lake to host 2014 Coy Cup

Williams Lake will play host the 2014 Coy Cup Senior Male AA Coy Cup provincial hockey championship.

BC Hockey made the announcement late October the Williams Lake Stampeders had been chosen as the host team for this year’s tournament.

The championships will be held March 14 at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

“As the defending champions we are very excited to bring this calibre of hockey to Williams Lake,” said Karen Gertzen, host committee member and director with the Williams Lake Stampeders.

“We know our fans and supporters will welcome all the visiting teams and their families to our great community and we promise a firstrate tournament.”

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds men’s basketball team now has a Cougar among its ranks.

Williams Lake’s Harpreet Randhawa, 21, a Columneetza secondary graduate and standout player for the Cougars throughout his high school career, was recently named to the UBC Thunderbirds men’s basketball team roster.

The six-foot-eight forward played his last two seasons as a member of the Douglas College Royals, following a one-year stint with the Kwantlen Eagles — both members of the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST).

Nov. 15, 2013 Falcons soar to silver medal at soccer zones

team exceeded all outside expectations at the recent North Central Zone Championships in Quesnel, picking up a silver medal in its first year competing at the ‘AAA’ level.

“The kids played awesome,” said head coach Mike Brogan.

“We thought we’d do well, but I don’t think we were expected to do as well as we did. In the final we ended up playing PGSS … We played a very hard-fought game and almost tied it up late in the game but conceded a late goal and were defeated 2-0 in a game that was closer than the score would indicate.”

The Williams Lake Timberwolves midget girls’ hockey team took gold Nov. 22-24 at the Kamloops Midget Female Hockey Tournament.

Dec: MLA Barnett lobbies for Bella Coola ferry service Dec. 4, 2013 Prolific offender to face multiple charges

A 17-year-old prolific offender residing in Alexis Creek and recently relocated to Kamloops is scheduled for a bail hearing in court Wednesday, Dec. 4, for possession of stolen property following a single vehicle accident on Highway 24.

The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 26 when 100 Mile RCMP received a report of the single vehicle collision, east of Homes Road near Lone Butte.

“A Ford F350 pickup had rolled in the ditch and an ATV had rolled out of the truck box,” said Sgt. Don McLean, operations NCO for the 100 Mile detachment in a press release issued Monday. Police say the truck was stolen from Williams Lake in late October while the ATV was stolen from Raven Lake on Sept. 20.

Dec. 4, 2013 Keep Discovery Coast Route: Barnett

Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett is lobbying for her govern-

ment to keep the Discovery Coast route running for at least 2014.

Barnett said she met with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone on Wednesday and insisted the decision to cancel the Port Hardy to Bella Coola Route be reversed.

“Right now my concern is that cutting the ferry in 2014 will be devastating to the tourism industry and small businesses, if we lose this product that has been sold for 2014,” she said.

“Minister Stone was receptive and said he would get back to me next week.

Hopefully I’m successful.”

Barnett said she laid the issues on the table she has received from her constituents. While financial issues sometimes drive decisions, the tourism industry, chambers of commerce and others have told her the tourism industry has spent a lot of money over the past year marketing the region, she said.

“Premier Christy Clark announced the Blue Ribbon panel at the end of the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention and appointed one of her new MLAs Dr. Darryl Plecas to be the lead on this,” Cook said.

The panel will visit the 14 communities involved in the panel and will be in Williams Lake the end of January.

“What is exciting about this, is this is a philosophical shift in reducing crime.

Instead of the traditional approach that this is an RCMP problem, this is a community approach to

creating healthier, safer communities.”

Cook said the province is looking at an integrated approach to crime reduction across ministries.

Dec. 6, 2013 Body of missing woman found

The search for a missing woman ended sadly near Williams Lake this week. On Monday, Dec. 2 the body of Susan Durham, a missing 59-yearold female from Vernon, was located on a remote logging road, off the West Fraser Road, said Barb McLintock of the BC Coroner’s Service Wednesday.

Dec. 6, 2013 Neighbours meet while responding to fire

George Gonyer likely made a pretty good

impression on his new neighbour Thursday.

Gonyer and his stepfather, Ron Handfield, arrived to do some work on Gonyer’s new home on Hodgson Road when they noticed smoke billowing out of a trailer next door just after 1 p.m.

Handfield and Gonyer jumped into action to try to find the trouble, the same time the owner also arrived home.

“I didn’t know what to do,” said Gonyer. “I just threw some water on it and hoped the guy’s house wouldn’t burn down — especially this close to Christmas.”

Goyner said the Williams Lake Fire Department arrived on scene within minutes to put out the fire, which had spread on a corner of the trailer.

Dec. 11, 2013 Chamber rallies for New Prosperity

The Williams Lake and Quesnel Chambers of Commerce joined forces with leaders of B.C. business, mining, and mining supplier organizations to promote Taseko’s New Prosperity Gold-Copper Mine Project during a media event held in Vancouver Tuesday.

“The event was put on by the B.C. Chamber, but this really snowballed from the Williams Lake Chamber’s position on New Prosperity,” said Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce president Jason Ryll Tuesday afternoon.

“We had asked the BC Chamber to lend its support behind us in trying to get the project to move forward.”

The BC Chamber brought the event together, along with Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett and CaribooChilcotin MLA Donna Barnett, to try and make sure a clear message is sent to Ottawa that B.C. needs the mine, Ryll added.

Thanks to a generous donation from the John Gordon Autism Foundation of Vancouver the Cariboo Chilcotin Child Development Centre will build an autism centre in Williams Lake.

The centre will be built by the next intake of Thompson Rivers University Residential Construction Program students through a partnership with the Williams Lake Construction Association, School District 27 and the CDC. “We have a second tier off the back lane of our centre where we’d like to create a house-like space that is custom designed to do the work that we already do with kids with autism,” CDC executive director Nancy Gale said Thursday.

Design for the facility would include a large living room, family room and a large commercial country kitchen.

“Families could come to work with our staff and their autistic children,” Gale explained.

According to an LRB arbitration ruling handed down Nov. 27, Susan Ronalds, 59, was terminated from her position as senior payroll clerk at city hall on April 5, 2013 following an incident which coincided with mounting tensions leading to the labour strike last February.

Ronalds took her case to the LRB, who conducted a three-day hearing in Williams Lake Nov. 6, 7, and 8.

Dec. 18, 2013 McLeese Lake house fire claims one life

A tragic early morning house fire on Robertson Road in McLeese Lake Tuesday has claimed the life of one man.

Around 2:30 a.m.

Tuesday, RCMP received a 911-call about the fire and a report there was possibly one person inside, said RCMP fire investigator Const. Allan Smith.

Smith is stationed in Williams Lake with North District Regional General Investigation Section and by noon Tuesday had completed his investigation of the fire scene.

There is nothing to suggest criminality in the case, Smith said, adding the investigation was being handed over to the BC Coroners Service and the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Tsilhqot’in community members and supporters demonstrated Friday outside of Taseko Mines Ltd.’s Vancouver office with traditional and modern song and dance to protest the company’s New Prosperity Mine.

“There are several of us gathered outside the Vancouver Art Gallery,” said Xeni Gwet’in (Nemiah) councillor Marilyn Baptiste Friday morning before the group proceeded to Taseko’s office.

“Youth, elders, others.”

Deliberations over the mine proposal have become a national issue as a test of the federal government’s willingness to accept the advice of its own scientists as well as respecting the rights of indigenous communities opposed to the mine, Baptiste said.

Dec. 20, 2013 Tatla Lake man facing 24 charges

Four months following his initial arrest, 24 weapons charges have been laid against a Tatla Lake man.

Crown Counsel laid charges against 63-yearold Gerald Kirby as a result of a Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC investigation.

“In early June 2013, CFSEU-BC received a tip that the man, a longtime resident of Tatla Lake, was trafficking firearms and prohibited devices,” CFSEU-BC said in a press release Wednesday. “CFSEU-BC began an investigation and it was uncovered that the man was allegedly selling assault-style semi-automatic rifles ... amongst other guns and weapons.”

Kirby was arrested at his home on Aug. 23 and a search warrant resulted in police finding and seizing 183 firearms of various makes, models, and calibres, along with tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition and prohibited devices, CFSEUBC said.

Dec. 25, 2013 Timber Kings series to shine spotlight on Williams Lake

It is no longer a secret that Pioneer Log Homes is going to be featured on television in a 10-episode series on HGTV Canada.

Pioneer Log Homes general manager Andre Chevigny told city council Tuesday his company will be showcased in a docu-reality titled Timber Kings.

The show is great news for Williams Lake, Chevigny said.

“It’s great because it paints Williams Lake in an excellent light. It’s really highly regarded and it paints the six personalities at Pioneer Log Homes as real heroes in the international world.”

Dec. 25, 2013 Christmas Day marks end of 38-year career

While some people will be unwrapping presents on Christmas Day, Williams Lake paramedic Steven Rupp will be wrapping up a 38-year career as a paramedic.

On Dec. 25, Rupp, 57, will work his final shift with the BC Ambulance Service.

Boxing Day he will hand in his keys and walk out the door.

“It will be a teary day,” Rupp said recently during an interview at the station. “I can remember my first day. I’ve had hundreds of partners in all these stations.”

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved Mom, Granny and Auntie, Hazel Moxey at Deni House on December 22, 2013 at the age of 82. Predeceased by her husband Ed, she is survived by her son Danny (Sue) granddaughters Danielle and Nicole, step-grandsons Kevin (Dena), Darren (Kathy) and great granddaughters Emma and Lana, son Bev and granddaughter Stacey, loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Mom was loving and caring with a positive attitude and a beautiful smile for everyone. She dedicated her life to her family, especially her cherished granddaughters. She will always be in our hearts.

PARKING REGULATION CHANGES Signs will be installed and enforcement to commence in early January In the area of Thompson Rivers University

1. No Parking signs will be installed from Blair to Midnight for the entire area on the TRU side of Western Ave. This would address the current safety issues for vehicles pulling out of TRU onto Western as no vehicles would be parked on that side of the street allowing great visibility.

2. “Resident Only” parking system for the six residences across from TRU, where residents are given tags to be left on their dashboard to allow only those vehicles belonging to the residents to park in this area.

3. Street parking allowed from 8 am to 5 pm from the corner of Comer Park extending towards Columneetza on the park side of the street. (This would allow some on-street parking, roughly 30 spots for students during the day).

4. The end of the area as you approach Columneetza will be restricted to only 15 minute stopping to allow parents to pick up/drop off their children at Columneetza. This area would extend to opposite the 4th residence in from Latin Street.

5. To ensure School buses the room to turn into the Columneetza School Bus pickup area, the no stopping area will extend from past Latin Street to in front of these first four residences on Western from Latin.

6. The remaining area in front of the residences on Western continuing to Blair will be “Residential Parking” Only.

7. Blair Avenue on the lower end towards Western will have no parking on both sides of the street (one side is already No Parking) This street is very narrow and with vehicles parked on either side school buses can barely get by.

8. Latin and Beauchamp will be “Residential Parking Only” zones.

On 11th Avenue 1. Parking will be limited to the south side of 11th Avenue only between McKinnon Street and Pigeon Avenue at all times.

FIREFIGHTERS WANTED The City of Williams Lake Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Paid-On-Call Fire Fighters.

Applicants must live within the Williams Lake Fire Protection District.

If you are motivated, physically fit and over the age of 19 you may have a future in fire fighting.

An informational session will be held at the Williams Lake Fire Hall, located at 230 Hodgson Road on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 7:00pm.

A REMINDER THAT DOG LICENSES MUST BE RENEWED BEFORE JAN. 1, 2014 At two months of age all dogs must be licensed in the City of Williams Lake.

License Fees: Spayed or neutered dog $10.00 Unspayed or unneutered dog $20.00 Late application fee (after March 31st) $10.00 plus regular license fee Replacement license tag $5.00 Aggressive dog $200.00 If your dog is not currently correctly licensed and is impounded a $50.00 fee will be added to your total. (This is in addition to the licensing, impounding and boarding fees).

Your dog’s license is valid for one year from January 1st to December 31st.

You are advised to buy your new license ahead of time but are responsible for purchasing, whether or not you receive a renewal notice.

Dogs’ licenses are their ticket home. Please ensure contact information with the City is up to date. It also lets other citizens know that a dog at large has a home and is not a stray. The money collected for dog licensing goes to the Williams Lake BCSPCA and the Animal Control Bylaw Services.

NO PARKING ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS IN THE 24 HOURS BEFORE GARBAGE COLLECTION DAY To improve snow removal service, the City will align snow removal with the garbage and recycling pickup schedule, and restrict street parking for a 24 hour period the day before the scheduled garbage pickup (i.e. if an area has garbage pickup on a Tuesday, street parking is not permitted on Monday.) This would limit the impact on most residential areas to only one set day a week, and allow snow removal crews to have these areas completely cleaned so that the garbage containers can be placed on the street for the day of their pickup.

Snow plowing will continue to be done as needed. Vehicles that impede snow removal operations may be towed.

Bus Shelter Advertising and Maintenance The City of Williams Lake is seeking Expressions of Interest from firms or individuals that may be interested in selling and maintaining advertising on City bus shelters and performing ongoing maintenance and repairs of shelters.

The City currently has 19 bus shelters located throughout the City. Each shelter is equipped with one 47” x 64” double sided backlit display case for advertising purposes.

OPERATIONS: Financial Services Department HOURS OF WORK: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., five days a week, Monday to Friday inclusive and attendance at meetings as required.

POSITION: Management (Union Exempt) GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Director of Financial Services is the Chief Financial Officer of the City of Williams Lake, pursuant to Section 149 of the Community Charter and is responsible for organizing and directing financial services, purchasing and risk management functions.

SUPERVISION: The Director of Financial Services shall report directly to the Chief Administrative Officer.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Recommends, develops and implements policies, plans and programs for administering the accounting, finance and purchasing functions.

2. Attends Council and/or Committee/Portfolio meetings.

3. Responsible for all accounting, finance and purchasing activities and maintenance of assets, liabilities, revenues and expenditure records of the City. Ensures that the accounting practices of the City comply with sound accounting principles.

4. Directs, coaches, trains and disciplines personnel within the department.

5. Responsible for risk management and all insurance matters for the City.

6. Prepares annual and five year financial plans in consultation with the Chief Administrative Officer, Senior Management Team, and Council.

7. Oversees the preparation of all yearend financial reports, financial statements and other municipal reporting. Supports the annual external financial audit process.

8. Assumes the position of Collector for the City.

9. Prepares all financial Bylaws.

10. Carries out the statutory duties of Financial Administration, pursuant to Section 149 of the Community Charter.

11. Prepares complex financial reports and analysis as required.

12. Monitors financial position of the City and makes recommendations to the Chief Administrative Officer and Council with respect to strategic management of Assets and Liabilities.

13. Performs such other duties as may be required from time to time by the Chief Administrative Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: 1. Recognized professional accounting designation as Chartered Accountant, Certified General Accountant or Certified Management Accountant and member in good standing.

2. Certificate in Local Government Statutory Administration, as recognized by the LGMA Board of Examiners or equivalent.

3. Minimum of 5 years experience in a senior finance or administration capacity in Local Government or Private Sector.

4. General understanding and knowledge of the Community Charter, Local Government Act and other related statutes.

5. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

6. Excellent analytical, problem solving and technical skills.

7. Proven ability to lead, manage and develop people and to build collaborative relationships easily.

Salary for this non-union position will be commensurate with experience and include a comprehensive benefits package.
