bigger. The kids show their new gifts to their parents. And their guesses were right — Lego for the girls, a remote control truck for Shaemos, and a toy tractor for Billy the cowboy.

"We're the ones whose house burned down," Constance tells a reporter, eyes wide and smile still shining.

The family lost their home to a devastating fire about two weeks ago. Immediately, the community rallied together and raised cash and clothing donations for them.

totaling $800 for the family, and Prospera gave them $500 to help them get on their feet again. While they are now living in a new home, they have to rebuild from scratch.

The donation from Prospera comes after a massive outpouring online through the children's school, Kent elementary. The principal there, Chris Wejr, initiated a Fundrazr account. To date, that has raised $3,305 for the family.

The fire was caused by an overworked space heater, and no one was injured in the blaze on Dec. 10.

Mail thefts on the rise

A volunteer for life

RCMP asking people to pick up mail on daily basis The RCMP is warning the public of a rise in mail thefts in the Upper Fraser Valley.

This holiday season has seen an increase of mail thefts in comparison to last year, according the police.

The Chilliwack RCMP are

asking people to pick up their mail on a daily basis to protect themselves. They are also requesting people to report suspicious vehicles that look out place, at or near a community mail box, and if possible, obtain a license plate number.

“Family and friends take great care in sending gifts to loved ones, so we hope everyone will help ensure the safety of those packages by diligently checking their mail every day,” said Constable Cynthia Kershaw.

Volunteers for RCMP needed The Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment is seeking Auxiliary Recruits for the RCMP Volunteer Program.

People looking for a challenge are encouraged to apply to be a part of the RCMP Auxiliary.

Members have the opportunity to develop invaluable skills, gain partnerships in the community and learn life skills.

Volunteers must specific qualifications.

They must be Canadian citizens between the age of 19 and 60, have a minimum education of a high school diploma, a full, valid class 5 B.C. license, be in good physical condition and of good character.

Applicants much obtain and maintain an RCMP security clearance, display a mature and responsible attitude and be able to volunteer a minimum of 160 hours per year for a minimum of two years.

They must be a resident of Chilliwack, Agassiz, Hope, or Boston Bar and be able to attend basic training sessions of three hours every Tuesday and Thursday, and eight hours each Saturday for four months, September 9, 2014 to December 13, 2014 An info session will be held Jan. 13 at the Agassiz Community Policing Office.

RCMP is a life changing, exciting and rewarding experience that will provide you with a network of knowledge and skills you can use for future employment or just in daily life,” says Constable Cynthia Kershaw.

I’ve always felt connected to the land.

I am no great gardener, but I am a lover of trees, of the natural world, and of the simple miracle of how a huge sunflower grows from a tiny little black seed planted in soil.

Now that I live in farm country, this connection to the land inevitably includes a certain affinity for animals. Growing up in a small city in the mountains I was not used to being up close and personal with any breed larger than a medium-sized dog or my cat, Kiko. Through my daughter, however, I have become fairly comfortable around horses, and by embracing my farm country life, I have been introduced to cows, goats, chickens and donkeys.

Although, admittedly, I don’t think I have what it takes to become a farmer myself, I have great respect for my

friends and neighbours who are.

In December of 2011 and 2012, I took part in a live pageant called ‘A Journey to Bethlehem’.

This annual event is made possible by some wonderful local people.

Farmer extraordinaire George, an ex-pat Yorkshireman and his wife Debra, a Swiss-trained cheese maker, put their skills to work creating a business which has created award-winning cheeses and continues to draw weekenders from all over the Lower Mainland. Using their outbuildings, their animals, and several of their friends and family members, George and Deborah create a memorable experience which recalls Mary and Joseph’s search for a room during the Roman census taking place in Bethlehem. We all know where that room ended up being, in a stable kept warm by the breath and body heat of animals.

Two re-enactments of the Journey to Bethlehem were presented, one in the afternoon to a medium-sized crowd of families, and an evening one to a very large crowd. I was one of four women in an a-cappella quartet, and we were invited to play the angel chorus for the pageant.

I had not worn an angel costume since playing

one in a pageant in high school. We were a group of rather puffy looking angels with white robes worn over our vests and scarves. We had four places along the route where we were to appear to have arrived like real angels and sing.

Our first location was by the cow barn where Mary and Joseph appeared from around the

building, Mary riding a real donkey. I wonder if the real Mary and Joseph’s donkey was that stubborn – it took all of Joseph’s strength to keep him on task.

Over the past five years, 10 people were killed and 36 were seriously injured in impaired driving related crashes in B.C. between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. That’s why police will continue to be out in full force at CounterAttack roadchecks across the province during the holidays.

While attitudes towards drinking and driving have changed considerably over the years, an average of 95 lives are still lost each year and impaired driving remains a leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. Alcohol impacts a person’s judgment, reaction time, coordination and visual functions.

Behind the wheel, that means it affects a driver’s ability to steer, track moving objects and control speed and lane position. No amount of coffee, food or fresh air can sober up an impaired person – the only cure is time.

So ‘tis the season for some good cheer but make sure you plan ahead for a safe ride home if your festivities involve alcohol.

Here are ICBC’s tips to help everyone get home safe this holiday season.

• It’s all in the details. You’ve planned out who you’ll go to the party with, how you’ll get there and what you’ll wear, but have you also planned how you and your friends will safely get home?

Choose a designated driver before going out or keep money aside for a bus or taxi.

Operation Red Nose is also available to help get you and your car home.

• Is it your turn? Share the responsibility to help your friends and family get home safely - ask yourself if it’s your turn to be the designated driver.

• Take a stand.

Never get in a car with an impaired driver. Ask to get out of the car if necessary. Take a stand and don’t let your loved ones get behind the wheel impaired.

• Be a good host.

If you’re hosting a party, reward your designated drivers with some fun cocktails.

Every year during the Christmas holidays, an average of 240 people are injured in 810 crashes in the Lower Mainland.

Opinion QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Wishing a Merry Christmas to all “And so this is Christmas,” John Lennon sang those many years ago. His voice reverberated in a matter-of-fact tone that somehow captured the sense of how much of a landmark Christmas always seems to be.

Besides being the time of year Christians have designated for celebrating the birth of their saviour, Christmas is also a moment for reflection.

“And what have we done,” Lennon continued. Sometimes, we feel we haven’t done enough, as evidence by the flurry of giving that goes on at this time of year. All of a sudden, people that aren’t overtly spiritual most of the year, become generous and considerate, striving to be better, caring and thoughtful.

Not that we’re never like that throughout the year it’s just that we make a concerted effort to be extra good at this time of year.

In some ways it’s like we are facing a deadline and have to get in our quota of compassion before the year ends. One of the biggest

manifestations of the Christmas celebration is the tradition of giving gifts. Being a wealthy people, we give a lot to our families and friends, those whom we hold most dear. But, to our credit, we do take the time to think of others with whom we have no connection. The many charities that are active at Christmas time enjoy a great deal of support in our community. We beat ourselves up a lot about the materialism and commercialism of Christmas but really, let’s give ourselves a break. We do a lot. We could do more and let’s resolve to do so, but take a moment to reflect on the good things we do. Take time to appreciate the good things in our lives and continue to share it with each other and the less fortunate.

Here’s the big idea of 2013 B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – One of Canada’s great entrepreneurial success stories in recent years is WestJet, the Calgary-based airline that is expanding across the country and taking on European routes.

Clive Beddoe, the founding CEO of Westjet, was famous for helping the cabin crew tidy up the plane before getting off a flight.

And the company is also known for its profit-sharing program, with all employees referred to as “owners” who have a stake in the success of the operation.

I thought of this management approach when news emerged that the B.C. government was offering public service unions a new kind of contract, with a fiveyear term and wage increases tied

to improved economic growth.

The surprising thing is that unions are accepting the idea, even though provincial growth must exceed the government’s independent economic forecast council projections before it can take effect in a given year.

The generally non-militant Health Sciences Association was the first to recommend acceptance of a five-year agreement with only 5.5 per cent raises guaranteed. Then they were joined by negotiators for 51,000 health and social services employees, represented by the B.C. Government Employees’ Union and other unions that have long been adversaries of the B.C. Liberals.

John Fryer, negotiator for the BCGEU going back to the epic battles with Social Credit governments and now a professor at University of Victoria, wasn’t impressed when he heard the news.

“These deals reflect what happens when public sector unions back the losing party in a provincial election,” he said.

“Union bargaining power takes a trip down the pooper.”

agreed that is the model.

“I think that’s a great principle for all of us to work from,” Clark said. “Until now, the growth of public sector wages has been completely insulated from changes in the private sector.

And this is the first time we’ve ever been able to successfully link those two things. At this point it’s still a small increment wage growth, but it’s a big change, and I hope we can continue to build on it.”

From an employee perspective, it is indeed modest. If real gross domestic product increases one per cent beyond the independent forecast used in the provincial budget, employees get an additional half of one per cent raise for that year.

Contrast this labour relations development with what’s happening on the federal scene.

A key dispute is over sick days, which the government estimates are averaging 18 a year. PSAC currently has 15 “bankable” sick days a year, which the union president refers to as a “negotiated right.”

It takes me back to my first union job, where I was warned never to take just one sick day.

We negotiated for two at a time, so always take two, the union rep told me. Implicit in this is the mindset that employees should give as little and take as much as possible.

Looking through my files each December for the B.C. story of the year, I consider what is likely to matter five or 10 years from now.

This partnership approach to building the provincial economy is my pick for 2013.

Mailbag Santa visits rekindle spirit of season It was the morning of Christmas Eve last year, and once again it didn’t feel like Christmas.

I was having a coffee and looking at one of those family portraits, and I got homesick – I missed my mom and dad and family, and those magical Christmases we shared together in Ontario. I missed not having that special feeling that I used to get every year.

A couple of years ago, I bought a ton of outdoor Christmas lights and decorated all of the hedges, evergreens and fence. I had just finished my cancer treatments and didn’t know how many more Christmases I would be around for – desperately hoping the lights would bring back that special Christmas feeling.

It didn’t.

So last year I bought a Santa Claus outfit for a visit to BC Cancer Agency's Fraser Valley Centre – where I was treated and where I have been volunteering every week for the past 16 months – at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

One patient – an older man wearing a Christmas hat – said he had awoken that morning excited with the hope that maybe a friend or family member might drop by for a visit. But none had… until Santa Claus.

He held my hand for the longest time and just stared at me.

He then muttered, “Thank you, Santa. Merry Christmas.”

I turned to leave his room – I didn’t want him to see me cry.

a woodcutter with a German accent and a spinning woman with a British one, several inn owners with children shouting ‘no room’ to the amusement of the crowd.

We angels hummed the tune of ‘What Child is This’ while it became clear that there was indeed no room that night for Mary and Joseph anywhere in Bethlehem. While the crowd was directed to another location by the narrator with a megaphone, we angels sneaked around the back of the building and climbed up a ladder to a hayloft from where we sang to the shepherds keeping watch over their sheep in the fields.

When the shepherds left their field to search for the ‘babe lying in a manger,’ we angels climbed back down the ladder and snuck around the back of the stable where the Clydesdale draft horses live, ducked under a railing and met the shepherds, goats, a calf and three wise men at the manger where Mary and Joseph now resided with the swaddled baby doll Jesus. Gathered behind the Holy Family we sang ‘Joseph Dearest, Joseph

Mine’ while crowds of 30 or so people at a time visited the final scene in the pageant. Children scooped up barn kittens and oohed and aahed at the sweet baby goats and the calf which were near enough at hand to pet.

Only three of us angels could make it to the evening performance.

The fourth had to keep watch over a birthday party.

When we had finished singing and the crowds were moving on to the pine huts where vendors served hot chocolate, spiced apple cider and cookies we climbed out of the manger. There were still some people milling around visiting with the animals in the goat barn. While I climbed out, a little dark haired girl looked at me in amazement. “You’re wearing BOOTS?” I suppose most angels are able to go without something so earthly as mud-proof footwear.

Every Christmas there is something with a bit of magic in it. The Farmhouse Cheese pageant was one such event, for me at least.

In the hustle and bustle of trying to help make Christmas special for my

family, and with all the shopping and the baking, the recitals and the concerts, it can be easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of the season.

I so enjoyed going back to the simple, beautiful roots of it, beasts and all.

Agassiz Harrison Aquanauts - 2013 Season

• A correctional officer was charged with two counts of allegedly trafficking drugs into Kent prison.

• A local farmer, Harry Boer, was killed while working, when his Bobcat slid into an icy ditch.

• A body was found floating in the Harrison and Fraser River confluence near Harrison Mills.

• Harrison adopted zoning bylaw 1020, which makes allowances for secondary suites in R2 zones. Councillor Zoltan Kiss was the sole opposition to the bylaw, which took four years to write and pass through council.

• Pay parking in Harrison was proposed, with the support of Mayor Leo Facio.

• Tammy Wood and Jason Alexander won a television contest to for a free wedding in Mexico. The couple was married later in the year, and are still living happily ever after in Agassiz.

• Idle No More arrived in Agassiz, with a small demonstration outside the Agassiz Harrison Museum.

• Pat Sears was honoured by her peers at the Kent Harrison Search and Rescue for her dedication to that organization, and the Royal Canadian Marine SAR. • The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals were awarded to individuals across Canada, with several recipients in Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, Sts’ailes and Seabird.

• Judy Lewis replaced Glen Savard as the District of Kent’s director of financial services.

February • Keith Robinson retired from his role as superintendent of the RCMP. He was replaced later in the year by Inspector Deanne Burleigh.

Year in Review Left: Basketball was alive and well once again in Agassiz, as the inaugural Chieftains Alumna tournament enjoys an incredible amount of support from the community.

in East Vancouver. The dogs and the truck they were stolen in attracted media attention and were reunited with their owners at the Agassiz RCMP station.

• The first Family Day was celebrated in B.C., on Monday Feb. 11. B.C. joined Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia, which also celebrate the statutory holiday.

• Harrison Hot Springs principal Mark Klassen reported to the school board, informing them that the school had been broken into three times around the Christmas holidays. In total, about $8,000 in electronics were stolen and the school was

forced to beef up their security system.

• Harrison council announced a new vision for Esplanade that would improve pedestrian flow, fix current drainage issues and encourage more activity along the waterfront.

• Six year old Ashley Jeronimus was hit by a car on Ashton Road, prompting much discussion about habitual speeding along the road. Eventually, the speed limit was reduced to 30 km/hr to help discourage speeding.

• Photographer Tim Van Horn traveled through Agassiz and Harrison as part of his Canadian Mosaic Project, photographing

locals. The final project is viewable at www. canadianmosiac.ca.

• Jim Thompson received the 2013 Award of Excellence for Innovation in Agriculture and AgriFood. Thompson is the director of the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre.

• William Jonathan Orders, the hang-glider pilot who was charged with obstruction of justice when he swallowed a memory card that contained data regarding the death of Lenami GodinezAvila, faced a judge in Chilliwack. A charge of criminal negligence causing death was added, and his lawyer asked for more time to

prepare, and for Orders to not need to appear at court dates. Both requests were granted.

March • The HarrisonAgassiz Chamber of

Commerce announced the winner of the Chamber’s Excellence Awards. Awards were given to 12 people, businesses and organizations in a gala ceremony at the Harrison Hot Springs

• AESS student Tommy Hrynkiw was placed on the Midget C Scholarship team for Fraser Valley East.

• The Walk/Run for Heritage was held in an effort to raise money for the Agassiz Historical Society.

• The Chilliwack Optimist Club partners with the Harrison Paddle Club to fund a youth team.

That team is still looking for new paddlers, aged 14 to 18.

• Manning Park announces it will close due to financial hardship.

• Harrison Mills residents set out to create a Chehalis Flats Bald Eagle and Salmon Preserve — a feat that was accomplished throughout the year and celebrated officially in November.

• The resort crew at Hemlock were busy in March preparing for the 2014 BC Winter Games, which will be hosted partially at the ski hill Feb. 20-23.

April • The federal government announced $1.2 million in funding for Harrison’s required water treatment plant.

• Kilby received $60,000 from the federal government, to help make necessary repairs and upgrades to

• The coffers for the Community Recreation and Cultural Centre continued to grow in April, with an announcement of a $250,000 boost from the federal government.

• Management at Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa announces that a new owner will be taking over soon, with Delaware North Parks and Resorts maintaing its managerial role.

• EJ Link completes fourth and final bike trek from Agassiz to BC Children’s Hospital, a fundraiser he began in leadership class at AESS. To date, Link has raised more than $10,000 through his fundraising for the hospital.

• School District 78 goes mobile, with the introduction of a phone app that connects parents and students to the District’s information.

• Tax rates went up in Harrison Hot Springs, but council and staff explained that didn’t translate into a higher taxes.

• Local farmer and marathon runner Tom Hoogendoorn attended the Boston Marathon and finished with a time of 03:17:41. He was not injured by the explosions that day, and was among 2,000 Canadians to run the popular race.

• An RCAF Cormorant helicopter was put to good use, rescuing a mom and her son from a steep embankment near Chehalis.

• Lilee-Jean Whittle Putt joined her dad, Andrew Putt, and hundreds of others in the Harrison Relay for Life.

• Several students at Cheam Yama Dojo earned their black belts, including Ann Schneider.

• The Sasquatch Days Festival in Harrison featured 10 First Nations bands in canoe pulling races, interpretive walks, drumming and a salmon barbecue.

• A search was held for missing camper and hunter Raymond Salmen at the north end of Harrison Lake. He is now presumed dead, possibly falling into the lake and drowning.

• Kay Eddison, Maureen Baker and Adriana Peters all graduate from high school, proving that being a senior can’t keep you from achieving your goals.

• Agassiz’s first Walk for ALS was held, in honour of Pete Wiehler. The long time Agassiz paramedic was able to attend the event and was celebrated with hugs, speeches, a prayer and a balloon release. However he passed away later in the year.

PUBLIC NOTICE SNOW & ICE CONTROL

The District of Kent’s response to winter events varies according to the individual characteristics of each event and availability of resources. Roads are checked early in the morning and the appropriate Public Works’ staff is called in to address the situation.

District of Kent priorities for snow and ice removal include: • Opening access for emergency service providers, such as Fire and Ambulance • Opening school bus routes on school days • Opening rural milk truck routes • Opening prison access routes • Clearing the commercial core and opening collector routes Once mobility is restored to these priority areas work can start on municipal subdivisions, sidewalks and parking lots. Exceptions will be made for emergencies.

Townsite plowing often starts with clearing driving lanes by plowing toward the curb.

Driveways do become obstructed from street plowing. Please note that the District cannot open private driveways or roads.

Some important things to remember during a snowfall: • Property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks or footpaths bordering their property by 12:00 noon the day following the accumulation.

• Vehicles should be parked in your driveway so as to allow snow plows to properly maintain roads.

• When shoveling snow place it on your lawn; grass is dormant and will not be affected.

Please avoid placing or piling any snow or ice upon any roadway, sidewalk or boulevard.

• If you must place snow on the roadway, place it to the right when facing the roadway so when the snow plow passes it will not re-plow snow back into your driveway.

Winter events are often followed by rain. Snow or ice in the curb lane can interfere with drainage and may cause possible flooding. Therefore, on roads that are wide enough, the District frequently “windrows” the snow down the centre of streets to permit proper drainage. The intersections are opened completely to allow the proper flow of traffic.

Please use caution when traveling during winter conditions: • Drive more slowly • Leave more room from the vehicle in front of you • Ensure your vehicle has good winter tires and is in good repair • Leave extra room when in the vicinity of snow removal equipment.
