City’s top Mountie retires SUPT. WARREN DOSKO LEAVING AFTER NEARLY 3 YEARS IN THE POSITION BY CRYSTAL RHYNO ADVOCATE STAFF Red Deer’s top cop unexpectedly resigned from his post in a surprise announcement on Tuesday. Supt. Warren Dosko worked his last day at the city’s RCMP detachment on Friday

after nearly three years in the position. Mayor Tara Veer did not shed too much light on the sudden departure but indicated Dosko was eligible to retire under the RCMP plan. “While his departure is unfortunate, it is completely understandable that he is eligible for retirement,” said Veer. “We knew this day would eventually

come.” Veer said Dosko was highly involved in establishing the local policing service levels and standards for response times. She said this was a bit of a milestone for a municipality with RCMP as a contracted service.

SALVATION ARMY TURKEY DINNER

Good food, good people RECORD NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS HELPS WITH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS MEAL BY RENÉE FRANCOEUR ADVOCATE STAFF A crowd of people gathered just before noon at Red Deer’s Salvation Army Church, the line curling out the door, waiting for the traditional turkey dinner. “I come every year,” Jerry Langevin said. “Good food, good people.” Rounds of “Merry Christmas” were passed around while others patted each other on the backs and some handed out candy canes. The annual Christmas meal hosted by the Sally Ann for more years than Major Larry Bridger can remember had a record amount of volunteers show up on Wednesday morning. “We have at least 30 volunteers, closer to 40 actually, I think,” he said, noting the various people in red and green aprons helping in the kitchen and also dishing out plentiful scoops of mashed potatoes, ham, vegetables and dressing from the assembly line buffet. Many of the volunteers begin stating their interest in September, he added. Crews had begun preparing the eight turkeys (all over 20 pounds each) on Monday. More volunteers showed up on Christmas Eve to begin the time-consuming and tedious process of peeling hundreds of carrots and potatoes. Living Stones Church had also donated various trays of festive cookies for dessert. Volunteer Daniel Pullen was at the front of the line handing out paper plates to everyone. “It’s my first time volunteering for the Christmas dinner,” he said. “It’s just a good, good thing. It helps them and it helps me when I’m helping others.”

“Christmas is special. We have our families at home but we’re a family here, too, so we put on a big spread. “The younger, new guys prepare lunch. But we all pitch in,” said Gary Engebretson, assistant platoon chief. Rookie Parker Douglas was hard at work upstairs in the kitchen at Station 1 in downtown Red Deer on Wednesday morning after the team’s routine workout from 8 to 9 a.m.

He had brought in a handwritten note from his mother detailing how to prepare a turkey, much to the amusement of his fellow crew members. Dressing, mashed potatoes and all the fancy fixings of a traditional holiday dinner including a counter full of sweets were also to be served around noon, depending on what calls came in. “It’s been a quite morning,” Engebretson said.
