A cloud of smoke billowed over downtown Hope for most of the day on Wednesday as firefighters battled a massive blaze on Fourth Avenue across from Memorial Park.

The fire started at about 6 a.m. in a garage in between an abandoned house and office/residential building, where Hope Dry Cleaners used to be located. “Our concern of course was that the fire in the office building would carry on and continue to extend itself into the neighbouring apartments,� said Fire Chief Tom DeSorcy.

managed to rescue his cat before the building was knocked down. Neighbouring apartments also sustained some water and smoke damage.

Maclynne Bourquin, executive director of Hope Community Services, said several families contacted them on Wednesday through the provincial emergency preparedness program, which provides lodging and food for 72 hours. Specific needs will be assessed in the coming days.

CP Holiday Train stops in North Bend

Hundreds of people turned out to the CP Holiday Train visit in North Bend and Lytton on Sunday. CP Rail brought a $4,000 cheque for the food bank, topping off donations for Hope and the Fraser Canyon, which was accepted by Area A director Lloyd Forman.

Dear community & tourism partners, heritage enthusiasts and friends ...

On Saturday, December 21st I will be working my last day at the Hope Visitor Centre & Museum Complex .... something that I have loved doing for almost 30 years.

It was on April 26th, 1984 that I started with the Hope & District Chamber of Commerce - newly graduated from UBC, just married and a recent arrival in Hope.

I continued as Chamber Manager for 18 years and had the good fortune to work on projects as diverse as the salmon enhancement project at Thacker Creek, the development of the Othello-Quintette Tunnels area, the construction of the Memorial Park playground and bandstand, the Sixth Avenue Park sports lightning improvement project, the start of the Hope Chainsaw Carvings collection and countless other community initiatives. There were fundraisers galore, luncheons, newsletters, newspaper columns, a weekly radio spot and a Chamber membership roster that grew to over 200. And there were meetings of course ... Executive, Board, Committee, Task Force and other innumerable meetings! Throughout that time I had the opportunity to know and work with a diverse number of business owners and community leaders, many of whom were excellent mentors and a few who became treasured friends.

B.C. Winter Games in Mission Feb. 20-13 The B.C. Winter Games will be taking place in Mission Feb. 20-23.

The District of Mission was one of six communities who bid for the event, and this is the first time the municipality has hosted a B.C. Games.

The Games includes participants from across the province in 18 sports and the athletes will range in age from nine to 40 years old. Up to 2,220 athletes, coaches and officials are expected. A number of the sporting events will happen in Mission, while others will be carried out in Abbotsford, Township of Langley, Pitt Meadows, Hemlock and Whistler.

Integral to the Games’ success will be volunteer efforts. About 2,500 people are needed in a variety of roles to bring the event together. Memorial tree honours pets

Canada Post will phase out home delivery of mail in urban areas in a new bid to cut costs.

Many newer suburban neighbourhoods in the Lower Mainland already have community mailboxes.

But the Crown corporation says the remaining one third of Canadian households that still get home delivery will be switched to community mailboxes or grouped or lobby mailboxes over the next five years.

It cites declining use of postal mail – a billion fewer pieces of mail were delivered last year compared to 2006 – as households shift to online bill payments and other digital communication.

The price of stamps will also go up from 63 to 85 cents each if bought in booklets, or $1 for individual stamps.

It means up to 8,000 fewer postal workers will be needed, which Canada Post says will be shed by attrition, as nearly 15,000 workers are expected to retire or leave voluntarily over the next five years.

“With its current labour costs, Canada Post has a much higher cost structure than its competitors in the private sector have,” Canada Post said in a press release. “This is simply

A Hope resident is helping people cope with the loss of their furry companions over the holidays.

Ed Stephens and his neighbour set up a pet memorial tree last week on Union Bar Road, near the entrance to the Thacker Marsh nature trail.

“Over the period of a year, when a good season rolls around, you see there’s always a quiet spot in the house,” he said. “We all have our little buddies that are missing family members. Let’s face it, they’re our kids.”

Since the memorial tree was set up, several people have stopped by to hang pictures of their beloved pets in resealable plastic bags along with their pet’s name and age. Stephens encourages residents to not only visit the site, but help decorate the tree in memory of their animals.

There have been ongoing mail theft reports in communities around the Lower Mainland.

Hope RCMP received a call on Dec. 10 at about 8:40 a.m. regarding mailboxes being broken into near Suckers Creek. Hope RCMP contacted Canada Post who advised police that at least eight other mailboxes have been broken into, most of them located in isolated areas.

us,” said Anick Losier, spokesperson for Canada Post. “We work really hard to ensure the safety of mail but unfortunately, sometimes even with the best equipment or system, when there’s a will, there’s a way. What we can do is encourage vigilance.”

Canada Post regularly looks at different equipment and anti-pry kits to curb break-ins, she added, in addition to working with local authorities.

Mail needs to be secure To some, it’s a perk enjoyed in older neighbourhoods and subsidized by newer ones.

To others, home mail delivery is a public institution and the elderly and disabled will be hurt if it’s discontinued.

Whatever camp you’re in, you’ll have to agree that Canada Post needs to revamp its business model to avoid losing $1 billion a year by 2020.

Switching to community mailboxes is seen as a way to cut costs and meet changing consumer demands.

While making the switch will be an inconvenience for people, mostly in older urban neighbourhoods, who still get mail at home, it is inevitable. Sadly, the switch doesn’t come with a drop in postage fees or, perhaps more importantly, a guarantee of mail security.

Thefts from community mailboxes have been a problem in many places throughout the Lower Mainland and it’s up to householders to make sure they pick up their mail regularly to avoid problems. But regular pickup is no guarantee of safety.

If Canada Post wants support for its costcutting measures, it had better do something to secure our mail.

Premier Christy Clark looks back on 2013 B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher After a whirlwind year that started with a come-from-behind election win, Premier Christy Clark sat down with me for the traditional year-end interview in her Victoria office. Here are excerpts from that discussion. A longer version with video can be found under the Opinion tab of this newspaper’s website.

TF: Premier, you surprised a few people this year. What surprised you the most about 2013?

PCC: I guess it was the disconnect between the pollsters and the pundits, and the public. I did have a sense all the time that the

citizens were thinking something different in the run-up to the election campaign. I wondered, am I missing something here, or are they missing something? And I guess it turned out that it wasn’t me that was missing something.

TF: The liquefied natural gas export project is going to use a lot of natural gas, especially in the early years. Will B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets [20 per cent reduction by 2020, 80 per cent by 2050] have to be changed?

PCC: I don’t have a clear answer on that yet. We are working with the companies on exactly how we are going to structure their environmental commitments and costs, and their electricity costs versus using gas, the total royalty tax regime. We’re looking at that as one package.

However that turns out, though, this opportunity to export natural gas to Asia is the single biggest opportunity we have ever had as a province to reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

In shipping this to China, we are going to help them wean themselves off some of the dirtiest coal anybody’s burning anywhere in the world.

TF: If B.C. is going to get credit for displacing coal use in Asia, shouldn’t B.C.’s coal exports, even though it’s metallurgical coal, count in our greenhouse gas total as well?

PCC: I know that the academics and pundits are going to get all mired in competing sets of numbers and studies. For me, we have a chance to do good for the world, and we’re going to take it.

TF: On oil pipelines, your

agreement in November with Alberta Premier Alison Redford involves B.C. supporting her effort for a national energy strategy. What do you see it doing in the future?

PCC: The big idea that she’s trying to pursue with that is a strategy that will connect us east to west in energy. Energy grids are much better connected north to south than they are east to west. So she’s trying to pursue a pan-Canadian strategy for the exchange of energy, whether that’s hydroelectricity or natural gas or whatever it is.

We haven’t been intimately involved with it until recently, so we’ll see where it goes.

TF: There’s a perception out there, fuelled by the opposition, that you campaigned against oil pipelines and now you’re turning the tanker around, as it were,

PCC: It’s typical of the other guys to reinterpret and misquote.

That’s what they do. They’re in opposition. What I said was, we have five conditions that must be met in order for heavy oil to be considered to go ahead in British Columbia. That has not changed.

The five conditions remain in place. As of today, none of them have been met. The only thing that is different today, from before the election, is that now I no longer stand alone in supporting the five conditions. I have one other premier supporting me, and that’s Alison Redford.

Town filled with caring and loving people during the Christmas season but can be seen weekly somewhere in this town giving their time, sharing their love, concern and caring.

Do we put up a Christmas tree?

Yes, we do. Why? Because we are going to spend time around it with family, friends and many times with someone less fortunate.

Do we go shopping for gifts? Yes, we do and I for one am not stressed out, as you put it, that it has to be

perfect. I look for that little something that will bring a smile to the face of a loved one.

I go shopping for those things with a good friend or a daughter, and together we have a fun-filled day laughing, sharing stories, catching up on news, and relaxing over lunch. I don’t consider any part of that selfish.

We have not forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. We try to

keep Christmas throughout the year not, not just in December.

You need to spend a little more time looking and listening and you’ll soon realize that Hope is not full of selfish people but rather caring and loving citizens, quietly and without fanfare, giving of themselves daily.

I for one am glad that I live here.

Re: Park dedication suggested, Letters (Dec. 5) Recently, there have been several suggestions as to who should be honored by renaming the park after a worthy “Old Timer.” I am sure that there are many candidates in Hope that fit the bill. However, if it is necessary to rename the park, the only “Old Timer” and I use this term lightly, is Dr. Ernie Murakami. The research, education and help he has given to other physicians and individuals in the study of Lyme Disease is incredible.

Dr. Murakami has put Hope on the map and is known worldwide and appreciated.

Googling him and his centre is a real eye opener.

As proclaimed by Ms. Cattrell, as well as Elaine Gardner’s view of her husband, there are those who applaud the efforts of Bud Gardner.

There are also those who do not, and would therefore vehemently object to the renaming

Passport to Christmas

60 Minute Club is all about fitness and fun

An hour a day of fitness can be made fun, especially when it is coupled with other healthy choices like eating right.

That’s the goal of the 60 Minute Kids’ Club, a fun and engaging online program designed to help get elementary school-aged children active.

The 60 Minute Kids’ Club is now looking to expand its community reach by partnering with Black Press.

“Our strong commitment to healthy communities is well-served in our partnership with the 60 Minute Kids’ Club” says Randy Blair, president of Black Press’ Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island divisions. “The benefits of active families are so numerous, it will deliver increasingly great news”.

“We want to make (children being healthy) even more of a community effort,” says Gillian Thody, Western Canada manager of the 60 Minute Kids’ Club.

And that means engaging more parents on the importance of their children making healthy choices, while demonstrating healthy choices themselves.

These include physical literacy (playing for at least 60 minutes each day), eating healthy (including five or more vegetables and fruits daily and eliminating sugar and sweetened drinks), and cutting back on computer

and TV time (two hours or less).

Two 60-day challenges and one 45-day challenge are held throughout the school year, skipping over busy times and holidays.

The first challenge of the year from Oct. 1 to Dec. 1 has just wrapped up, with the second challenge set to begin Jan. 15. Schools across Canada participate at the same time. Schools can sign up for the challenge at www.60minkidsclub.org.

Each student logs in and tracks their own progress, receiving points for each log in, which aggregate under their school. This enables organizers to determine the most active kids, grades, schools, districts, regions and provinces across Canada.

The 60 Minute Kids’ Club, which is aligned with Canadian Sport for Life, originated in 2009 with Innovative Fitness, a personal training business. At that time 5,000 Kindergarten through Grade 6 students in five schools in B.C., Ontario and Nova Scotia participated in a pilot program which produced encouraging results.

In 2012, 70 schools in B.C. were involved and the program has now expanded to Alberta and Manitoba.

“We hope this year to engage 100 schools in B.C.,” says Thody.

How do you want to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation?

An online forum has been opened up for Canadians to give feedback on the celebration, leading up to the commemoration.

Canada turns 150 in the year 2017, and the government is looking at ways to commemorate the occasion nationally and in various communities.

The website includes a questionnaire with five main questions asking how Canadians would like to commemorate the event. It asks which of Canada’s accomplishments over the last 150 years make you most proud, which Canadians have inspired you the most, what the anniversary theme should be, how you would like your community to celebrate, and finally, what could your or your community do for future generations.

Mark Strahl, MP for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, is encouraging residents to take part in the online forum.

“This anniversary is a once in a life time opportunity to celebrate the creation of the best country in the world and we believe every Canadian from coast to coast to coast should have an opportunity to say how they would like to see this historic date recognized,” Strahl said.

The Hope area offers many holiday activities

Children are home from school for their Christmas break starting tomorrow (Dec. 20) and they will be full of excitement and energy. Many Hope families will also be hosting family and friends for the holiday season. Here are some ideas that have been compiled by the staff of the Hope Visitor Centre to keep them entertained.

One of the first options

to consider should be the wonderful recreation facilities that our small town is fortunate enough to have in the Dan Sharrers Aquatic Centre, Hope Arena and Gym/ Cardio Room. While all of the facilities will be closed Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1, there is a special schedule of public hours over the rest of the holiday break. Contact the Hope Recreation Complex at 604-869-2304 to check on schedules and admission rates.

Some of the special events that the Hope rec centre is offering this holiday season include an Ugly Christmas Sweater Tween Dance on Dec. 20, from 7-10 p.m., for youth aged 10 to 12. Admission is $5 each. A Drop & Shop Session is scheduled on Dec. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which gives you some time to Christmas shop or maybe wrap presents without distractions.

For winter sport enthusiasts, there are two bus trip packages offered to Manning Park Resort on Dec. 21 that depart at 8 a.m. – one for Nordic cross country skiers and snowshoers for $40 per person and another for alpine downhill skiers for $70 per person.

Winter Day Camps are being offered Dec. 23, 27 and 30, plus Jan. 2-3, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for children aged six to 12.

The Hope Library is another local facility that can offer you hours of enjoyment this holiday season. In addition to thousands of book titles, they have movies and music available as well!

The Hope Cinema is another entertainment facility in Hope that caters to all ages. They have firstrun movies playing Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. This evening (Dec. 19), the Hope Film Club offers up their monthly showing at 7:30 p.m. - The Sound of Music. Children 12 and under will pay only $2 (with an accompanying adult film club member). Starting Dec. 20, the eagerly awaited Tolkien series film The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug begins. If you are looking to enjoy a live theatre performance then plan to attend Broadway & Beyond – A Musical Review at Joe’s at 293 Wallace Street by the Hope Performing Arts Community Theatre at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Dec. 21. They came out on top as hosts, making sure that every one of the seven visiting teams went home with at least one win.

Unfortunately, that meant putting all the others ahead of themselves, as the Hope senior Mustang girls finished in the final spot at their basketball tournament last weekend. The girls met Fraser Lake in their first game at 2 p.m. on Friday and coach Jeff Kuhn said the large crowd of HSS students might have given his girls the jitters. Thanks to the efforts of leadership teacher, Lenora Poulin and her class, students were able to “buy” themselves out of the last class of the day by bringing an item for the local food bank. The other part of the buy out was to head to the gym to support the home team.

“I think the girls were a bit nervous, playing in front of the student body,” said Kuhn. “It was their first

home game of the year and Fraser Lake jumped up to an early 8-1 lead.

“They were killing us with their fast break,” said Kuhn of the northern team that only had two spares on the bench.

Spurred on by Azalia John’s tenacity (and 15 points) Hope closed the gap, to trail by 30-25 at the end of the third quarter — but Fraser Lake pulled away for an easy win.

Hope met their local rivals, Agassiz, later in the evening and it was a tight game throughout.

“We were up 20-19 at the half and 34-30 at the end of the third,” said Kuhn.

“With 13 seconds left, they were ahead by one point and we pulled a desperation foul to get back possession… but the girl scored both free throws and we lost by three.

“I think we’ll beat them in a league game,” figured Kuhn. “Azalia John had 22 points for us. When she’s on, she really produces.”

Opposing coaches picked the player-of-the-game for Hope’s three matches, with players receiving Tshirts custom printed by Sasquatch Signs. Mina Kim got the nod in the first game, John in the Agassiz tilt and Madison Kuhn in the Saturday game against the Delta Pacers.

“That was a very discouraging loss,” said Kuhn of the last game. “We came out a bit flat — and our shooting was very poor. Reid [Nickerson] keeps track of the shooting percentage and we were at six per cent success in the third quarter.

“It improved to 42 per cent in the last quarter, so that was good,” said the coach. “And even when we were down by 20, the girls just kept giving ‘er. I’m always impressed with our character. Azalia had 22 points in each of the last two games.”

Kuhn found that the Mustangs had trouble playing against zone defences, as opposed to the man-to-man that Agassiz was playing.

One coach told me, ‘You know, I am taking notes. We’re hosting a tournament in a couple of weeks and I am impressed with how this one was organized.’

“We would love to have more people from the community coming out to watch the games and showing their school spirit,” added Dubois, “so mark it in your calendars. Jan. 10 and 11 are the dates for our upcoming senior boys’ Hoopfest tournament.

“It’s free to watch, so come on out with your families for a little fun and entertainment. We will also be running a ‘buy-out’ for this tournament, so it would be great if you can donate non-perishable food items for our local food bank, or help support our athletics program through monetary donations, though donations will not be required for entry.”

Died on the afternoon of November 17, 2013, in Hope, British Columbia. Katharine’s spirit remained positive throughout her lengthy illness, but her body ultimately gave out and she died peacefully.

Katharine was born and raised in Nelson, British Columbia, and left the Kootenays for the West Coast in 1974. Victoria, and the campus of the University of Victoria was the focus of her attention for several years pursuing a Bachelor of Science, which she completed, with a Microbiology major, at the University of British Columbia in 1979. Her venture beyond university was initially work at the Terry Fox Cancer research lab at UBC, but the big city was not her ultimate destiny, and she settled for a quieter life as a mother, teacher, artist, gardener, and community advocate in Hope, BC in 1983. Beyond her scientific education, and teaching vocation, Katharine was a very talented artist and produced etchings, drawings and paintings, which are a cherished part of her legacy. Her major legacy lies in the parenting of her sons Richard Jonker, and David Johnson, who are both fine young men and reflect her spirit, kindness, and resilience.

NEWMAN, Florence Mary Florence Mary Newman, born December 28, 1919, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2013 at the age of 93. Mom grew up on the farm her parents homesteaded in Sullivan, Surrey, BC. Mary was predeceased by her husband Eric in 1997. She is sadly missed by her daughter Alice and her husband Roland, her son Ken and his wife Anne, 5 granddaughters; Sandra (Tim), Beverley (Scott), Treena, Janice, and Kara (Steve), 8 greatgrandchildren; Frank, Steve, William, James, Eric, Rian, Deklan, and Schuyler.

As an Air Force wife, Mom supported Dad in his career and they were stationed in various bases in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. After their retirement Mom and Dad settled in Hope, BC. They loved to travel in their trailer and the Cessna all over BC. A few years after Dad’s passing Mom moved to Penticton and spent her last few years living in Concorde Place. She loved watching the planes take off and her Sunday drives with an ice cream stop at Tickleberries or Summerland Sweets.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be held in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Society (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.hansonsfuneral.ca .

Ed passed away December 12, 2013 with his family by his side after a long battle with PSP(Progressive Supranuclear Palsy).

Ed was born Mar. 2, 1930 in Kelowna and after many moves, settled in Hope. Ed was previously married and had five children: Reginald (deceased), Valerie, Sherry, Katherine(Dennis) and Cindy (Mike). Ed then married Marlene in 1970 and had three children: Laurie Hansen, Roger, and Donna (Al Goodman).

Ed also has 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Ed had four brothers: Jack, William (deceased), Lawrence and Leonard, 4 sisters: Elizabeth Dillman (deceased), Mary Jacobsen (deceased), Violet Wilson and Jean Shurtleff (deceased).

Ed moved to Hope in 1973. He worked at the Weigh Scales from 1975-1985. He and his family built the Othello Tunnels Campground in 1986 and enjoyed meeting the visitors from around the world for 13 years before retiring to downtown Hope. Ed loved camping, fishing, making sausage, gardening and animals - of which we had many different species.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Greggain for his care and the staff at Fraser Hope Lodge for making Ed a part of their family during his stay with them.

A Celebration of Life was held at the Legion Hall on December 14, 2013 with Pastor Jeff Kuhn officiating. A tribute to Ed was given by Brian McKinney.

Snow & Ice Removal Information The District’s priorities for snow removal 1. Reducing hazards on major routes during storm conditions and providing assistance to emergency response vehicles (fire, police and ambulance) 2. Keeping major transportation routes open. This includes mobility for transit on arterial, collector and bus routes 3. Extreme hazard zones, business areas, civic buildings and lanes that provide the only access to a property 4. Restoring mobility on residential streets after the storm has passed.

Streets must be plowed from curb to curb to expose the catch basins. Catch basins must be cleared to accept water from melting snow. On most streets, the snow plows are required to make multiple passes to clear all the snow.

When clearing your driveway, pile the snow on the left side of your driveway, when looking at your house from the road. In many cases this will reduce the amount of snow that the plows push back into your driveway. Also, please do not shovel snow onto the sidewalk or road.

Be patient and thoughtful. The District staff is out there working on your behalf. A little consideration and common sense can go a long way when weather conditions are difficult.

Council Briefs November 25, 2013 Council Meeting Public Hearing A Public Hearing was held to hear input on Zoning Amendment Bylaw No.1343, 2013. The purpose of this bylaw is to regulate and limit federally licensed medical marijuana growing operations with the District of Hope boundaries.

RCMP Lower Mainland Integrated Teams RCMP members gave a power point presentation to Council reviewing the costs and funding formulae associated with the Lower Mainland Integrated Teams, specifically, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstructive Service (ICARS), Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), and Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS).

Multi-Material British Columbia Packaging and Paper Printer Program Extension Request Council directed staff to inform both MMBC and the Ministry of Environment that the District requires more time to consider MMBC’s current offer to participate in the program, and to continue working with regional partners in determining when and how best to participate in future.

Development Variance Permit – 435 Stuart Street Council reviewed and approved a Development Variance Permit for 435 Stuart Street, to relax the requirement of the minimum lot area for a two family resident from 700 square metres to 562 square metres. This will enable the property owner to convert an existing single family dwelling into a two family residential dwelling.

Development Permit and Development Variance Permit – 755 Old Hope Princeton Way Council reviewed and approved both a Development Permit and a Development Variance Permit for 755 Old Hope Princeton Way, to prepare the property for the development of a motel and to relax the maximum height provision for the Highway Commercial Zone from 10 metres to 12 metres.

Downtown Development Permit – 655 Third Avenue Council reviewed and approved a Downtown Hope Development Permit for property at 655 Third Avenue to enable construction of a motel addition.

Uncollectable General Accounts Receivables/Uncollectable Outstanding Property Taxes Staff was authorized by Council to write-off in 2013, uncollectable accounts receivables totalling $1,786.15.

With regard to outstanding property taxes, staff was authorized to petition the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to approve the write-off of property taxes, late payment penalties and interest, totalling approximately $8,488.33 for uncollectable taxes on manufactured homes.

Appointment of Director of Finance Council declassified a motion from the November 12, 2013 In-Camera meeting that Ms. Carolyn Bidwell be appointed the Financial Officer and Collector for the District of Hope as of December 9, 2013.

Hope Landfill Closure Project Council declassified a motion from the November 25, 2013 In-Camera meeting directing the Director of Finance to increase the Hope Landfill Closure project budget by $350,000.00, with funds to come from the post closure liability account; and authorizing the Chief Administrative Officer to amend the construction contract between the District of Hope (Owner) and JJM Contracting (Contractor) to reflect the revised scope of construction work for the transfer station.

AdvantageHOPE Fee for Service and Visitor Centre/Museum Centre Operation Council authorized staff to execute an Agreement with Hope Business and Development Society, aka AdvantageHOPE, to provide the District with Economic Development Services and Operation of the Visitor Centre/Museum Centre. The term of the Agreement will run from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016.

Fees, plus applicable taxes are as follows for the Visitor Centre/Museum Centre – 2014: $98,800, 2015: $94,800, 2016: $89,800 Economic Development forecast budget is as follows – 2014: $151,200, 2015: $145,200, 2016: $145,200.

It has been a great privilege to begin serving as your MLA this year. A lot has happened since the election in May. In the summer we sat in the legislature for a month and passed a balanced budget. In August, we opened our constituency office in Chilliwack. And for the first time, we have established a satellite office in Hope. It’s open on Thursdays and Fridays at 366A Wallace St. – do come and visit us soon!

As we approach the holiday seaMLA LAURIE THRONESS son, let’s take a few moments to relax and think about the good things we enjoy in our beautiful country, and reflect on the values that make Christmas special. Many of us will think about the gift of the Christ Child. We can all donate generously to charities in addition to giving presents under the tree.

Let’s share love with family and friends, enjoy good food, have fun celebrating, and drive and play responsibly.

This the time of year when we look back on the year behind us, noting accomplishments and innovations, then look ahead to the new year, anticipating challenges and putting plans in place to meet those challenges and lessen the impact on our students and staff.

SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR LINDA MCMULLAN The challenges facing us continue to be in the areas of declining enrolment, program choice in small secondary schools, and funding.

This past year, we have seen each school begin to implement innovative teaching and learning practices, including considering novel ways to use the physical space in their buildings.

We have seen the alternate schools welcoming more students, and adjusting their programs to fit each individual student. We even saw three seniors (ages 76, 80, 89) graduate last June with their Dogwood diploma from the Agassiz Centre for Education.

In support of personalized learning, we will be looking at local school calendar options and will begin a series of public meetings to collaborate with all of our education partners on the various school calendar options. The first meeting will be held at the district office on Jan. 21 followed by public meetings in Boston Bar and Agassiz.

We are fortunate to have leaders — both in the schools and in the district administration office — who are dedicated to student learning, and funding that learning. We have teachers and support staff who understand that the student is at the epicenter of their purpose in working here, and we have creative, energetic and responsible people serving as trustees.

Here are some simple life-saving steps that can prevent fires: T Use non-combustible containers for tea lights and votive candles T Place candles in a location where they can’t be knocked over or come in contact with combustible items and blow out all candles before leaving the room or going to bed T Keep Christmas trees, wrapping and decorations away from heat sources HOPE FIRE CHIEF T Keep your real Christmas tree fresh by TOM DESORCY watering it often or use a fire resistant artificial tree T Use only lights which have been tested and labelled by an approved testing laboratory and always turn tree lights off before leaving home or going to sleep. Consider using approved timers to preset the on and off times T Ensure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and in each sleeping area. In fact smoke alarms make excellent gifts and remember they don’t last forever so replace yours if they are more than 10 years old When preparing your holiday meal remember that a stovetop fire can start in a flash. Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking, keep all combustible items a safe distance away from the stove (this includes tea towels, wooden or plastic spoons and paper towels), and keep a pot lid near the stove to smother flames if a fire starts in a pot.

It was a year in which we were able to reduce crime by over 18 percent.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the citizens, businesses and mayor and council for the wonderful time I have had while serving as the leader of the Hope/Boston Bar RCMP. I will miss the tight knit communities and the relationships that I have made upon my transfer to Lloydminster, Alberta.

Best of the Holiday menu planning for first-time hosts Whether hosting family or friends or a combination of both, first-time hosts typically want to impress their guests while ensuring they get enough to eat and have an enjoyable evening. Since dinner is such a big part of holiday gatherings, hosts often place extra emphasis on what to serve, and that can be tricky when this is the first time they are hosting.

When planning the menu for your holiday soiree, consider the following tips.

T Get a head count. Though other factors will influence what to serve, the size of your guest list may ultimately dictate what to serve. Once you have confirmed just how many guests you will be hosting, you can then choose a main course that suits the size of your guest list.

T Decide which type of party you want to host. The type of party you want to host also will influence what you serve. A formal gathering should include an appetizer, a main course and a dessert, including both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees. A less formal gathering gives hosts more leeway. The more formal the gathering, the more formal the menu. Hosts of less formal gatherings may even want to host a holiday pot luck buffet, inviting guests to bring a favorite dish or side dish while the hosts take care of the main course.

T Ask guests if they have any dietary restrictions. Upon being invited to a holiday dinner, some invitees may let hosts know if they have any food allergies or medical conditions that restrict which foods they can eat. Solicit such information from all

Winter Fruit-Stuffed Pork Tenderloin Serves 8 1/2 1/2 1/2 2 1 1 1 2 4 1/4

cup dried apricots cup dried cherries cup dried figs pork tenderloins (about 3 pounds total) teaspoon salt teaspoon freshly ground black pepper cup crumbled blue cheese tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil tablespoons butter cup honey, preferably sourwood honey

1. Mince the apricots, cherries and figs by hand or in a food processor.

2. Slice the tenderloins lengthwise, almost all the way through. Open them up and lay them flat.

Place each tenderloin on a large piece of plastic wrap. Cover with another piece of plastic wrap and pound each piece of meat with a meat tenderizer until it is about 1/2-inch thick. Remove the top piece of plastic.

3. Season the surface of the pork with the salt and pepper. Divide the fruit mixture in half and spread evenly on the cut surface of each tenderloin. Top each with half of the cheese. Roll up each tenderloin, using the bottom piece of plastic to help you, tucking in the fruit and cheese as you go. Tie kitchen string every 2 inches around the tenderloins, continuing to push in any fruit or cheese that may fall out.

4. Preheat the oven to 450 F. 5. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the tied tenderloins, turning as each side is browned. Be careful when searing the open side, as some fruit and cheese might fall out. You are just trying to seal in the meat juices, not trying to cook the pork all the way through.

6. Combine the butter and honey in a microwaveable bowl and microwave on high for about 20 seconds, or until the butter is melted. Drizzle the butter over the tenderloins.

7. Place the tenderloins on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 150 F. Remove the baking sheet and allow the tenderloins to sit for at least 10 minutes before slicing. This will keep the juices in the meat rather than all over your kitchen counter.

8. Snip off and discard the strings. Slice the pork into 1-inch-thick pieces and serve.

Tips to curtail holiday spending this season Spending money is an accepted part of the season for many celebrants, who exchange gifts with loved ones, travel to see family and friends and host holiday parties this time of year. None of those things comes without a cost, and for some consumers, curtailing those costs is an early New Year’s resolution.

Part of the danger of holiday spending is that many consumers are already in debt before the season even begins.

Though it might

seem impossible to rein in holiday spending, there are ways consumers can do just that and still enjoy a festive holiday season.

T Propose a gift exchange. Many families exchange gifts during the holidays, but there are ways to make such exchanges less expensive. Instead of a traditional exchange in which every member of the family buys a gift for everyone else, propose an exchange in which family members pick names out of a hat and only buy a gift

for the person whose name they draw. This saves shoppers time and money, and families still get to enjoy the thrill of putting a smile on a loved one’s face.

T Don’t purchase extended warranties.

Big-ticket items like televisions and other household appliances make for popular gifts come the holiday season. When purchasing such items, shoppers are often asked by a salesperson if they want to purchase an extended warranty. In theory, extending the

Emphasize safety when Poinsettia plant care decorating for the holidays Though the holiday season is a festive time of year, it can quickly turn tragic if revelers do not emphasize safety when decorating their homes. When decorating this holiday season, be sure to employ the following precautions so your holiday season is festive, decorative and safe.

T Exercise extreme caution with holiday lights. Fires may start because of frayed or bare wires, broken or cracked sockets or even loose connections.

It’s important that men and women be especially careful when decorating their homes with holiday lights, inspecting each set of lights for damage and discarding any damaged sets. When choosing lights, use only lights that have been certified for outdoor use on your

home’s exterior, and never use outdoor lights inside.

T Keep the tree away from heat sources. Though it might seem more idyllic to place your Christmas tree next to the fireplace, it’s a lot more dangerous as well. When choosing a spot for your tree, find a place that is away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators and vents.

But homeowners should also know that even trees placed away from heat sources can still dry out, creating a fire hazard even if the tree was fresh and healthy when purchased.

That’s because Christmas trees can quickly dry out in heated rooms. Monitor the tree’s water levels every day, checking those levels in both the morning and at night before going to bed. This prevents the tree from

drying out and becoming a fire hazard, and it also helps the tree maintain its aesthetic appeal through the holiday season.

T Limit use of candles. Like Christmas trees, candles are a popular yet potentially hazardous decorative item during the holiday season. When decorating with candles, be sure that all candles are extinguished before leaving a room and never leave them burning when you go to bed. Candles should be kept away from any decorative items, including Christmas trees, that can catch fire. Never place candles near curtains, furniture or presents. Holiday enthusiasts with little children or pets at home might want to decorate with fake LED-light candles instead of traditional candles.

Although poinsettias are most often associated with the holiday season, they are actually tropical plants. In spite of their origins, poinsettias can thrive during the holiday season and even last long after the holidays have come and gone.

It’s important to note that poinsettias grow in a warm climate and therefore must be kept in tropical conditions to ensure the plant’s health. Furthermore, poinsettias bloom in response to shortening daylight hours. That means they will need ample darkness each night in order to simulate the dark nights of short, winter days.

During the day, the plant should be in a sunny window where it will have access to bright light. The more light the better. Keep the soil evenly moist. Misting the plant will help it to retain some humidity.

Also, fill the overflow saucer on your flower pot with gravel to allow water seeping through the pot to evaporate from the gravel. Hot temperatures indoors combined with high humidity will help the plant to thrive. Even one day without adequate moisture can cause the leaves to drop.

Furthermore, decreasing temperatures can cause leaves to fall off.

The goal is to keep the indoor temperature consistent. While many poinsettia plants are discarded after the holiday season, these plants can actually be cut back and saved for next season. Trimming back any remaining leaves and continuing to care for the plant by keeping it moist can help. To force the blooms next season, start reducing the plant’s exposure to sunlight in mid-September to October. Again, this will mean removing the plant to an area that is shrouded in complete darkness. Even streetlights or indoor lighting can affect blooming.

T Cut the front panels off of the cards – the part with the decoration – and save them in an envelope for next year. When wrapping presents, use the cards as your gift tags.

Now you have inexpensive wrapping materials for gifts that are also environmentally conscious.

T Gather the fronts of many cards and punch holes along the edges. Use yarn to sew each card to another, creating a Christmas tapestry, place mats or other creative ideas for decorating.

T Photo cards are

popular greetings for the holidays. Cut out the images of families and friends from the cards and make a collage to be saved. You can look back each year and see how children have grown or fashions have changed.

T Use pieces of the Christmas cards to decoupage wooden or paper boxes.

Then these boxes can be given as gifts for the holidays.

T Create drink coasters or trivets by

cutting images out of the Christmas cards.

Laminate the images and attach them to cork to serve as coasters. For trivets, attach images to ceramic tiles and then coat in a heat-resistant shellac.

Christmas cards do not need to be relegated to the trash can when the holiday season has ended. Such cards can be used to create crafts that will add flair to upcoming holiday seasons.

The holidays have come and gone, and now it is time to pack away the decorations and retire the tree for another season.

It’s also time to decide what to do with the dozens of greeting cards that arrived in the mail over the last few months.

According to the Greeting Card Association, around seven billion greeting cards are sold each year. Estimates suggest that roughly two billion are holiday cards that will be sent during the month of December.

January is a time of change and new beginnings. People often look forward to January as a chance to wipe the slate clean, often resolving to make changes to improve their quality of life in the months ahead. Such traditions may date back to the ancient god for which the month of January was named.

January is named after the ancient Roman god Janus, who was the god of beginnings and transitions as well as the god of gates, doorways, and passages of time.

Janus also was believed to preside over the beginning and ending of conflicts. Janus is usually depicted as having two faces that point in opposite directions. Because of these dual faces, Janus was seen as duplicitous and being in charge of opposites.

According to Roman mythology, Janus was able to see into the past and the future. He also was depicted as guardian of the new year and keeper of the calendar. There was no counterpart to Janus in Greek mythology.

When examining the many attributes of Janus, it is easy to see why the month of January would be named after this multifaceted ancient Roman god.

New Year’s activities for adults and kids New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year, when friends and families gather to count down the waning moments of the year as they anticipate the fun times ahead in the year to come. While adults tend to look forward to New Year’s Eve festivities more than children, there are ways parents can ring in the New Year with their kids.

T Invite kids into the kitchen. New Year’s Eve festivities often include food, so why not invite youngsters into the kitchen to cook alongside you? Kids may not be interested in preparing the main course, but let youngsters get involved when baking the night’s more delectable treats, like cookies and cakes.

Little ones can choose their favorite treats and then help mom and dad prepare those treats for guests coming over to join in the festivities. Decorate cakes and cookies with a New Year’s Eve theme.

T Pick funny resolutions out of a hat.

New Year’s resolutions are a big part of the holiday, and families who want to add some fun to this tradition can sit down and write their own funny resolutions.

Keep the resolutions you write down to yourself, place each person’s ideas in a hat and then pick them out before the kids go to bed or right after the clock strikes midnight, whichever happens to come first.

Simple ways to make resolutions stick A new year often begins with good intentions, as thousands resolve to make positive changes in their lives. Resolutions are easy to make when one is toasting at midnight and ready to take on the world. But resolutions can be harder to keep as the days turn into weeks and weeks become months.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota found that 80 percent of resolution-makers have given up by Valentine’s Day. A January 2012 poll conducted in England found that, of the 3,000 respondents, roughly three-quarters of them admitted they were no longer confident they would stick to their resolutions for the rest of the month.

There are several different reasons why resolutions fail, and recognizing potential pitfalls can help people stick with their positive changes throughout the new

year. The following are a few ways to ensure your resolutions last the year.

T Don’t make an unrealistic resolution. Losing weight is a popular resolution. Some resolve to drop dozens of pounds in an effort to completely transform their bodies. However, when the weight doesn’t magically come off, it can be easy to grow discouraged. Weight loss is not instantaneous, and healthy weight-loss plans advocate gradual weight loss, such as one to two pounds per week. Instead of setting such a lofty weight-loss goal, establish incremental milestones with tangible dates.

T Don’t go it alone. You’re more likely to have success with keeping a resolution if you have outside support. Enlist a buddy to go to the gym with you or provide support as you attempt to quit smoking. Having a support system in

place can motivate and inspire, knowing someone will be keeping tabs on you may instill enough anxiety to propel you through your resolutions.

T Make resolutions for the right reasons. Making resolutions for the wrong reasons can be counterproductive. If you want to lose weight for cosmetic reasons and not to improve your overall health, you may find your motiva-

tion waning as the weeks turn into months. Making resolutions for the right reasons often provides ample motivation.

T Avoid boring resolutions.

Many people make boring resolutions that often focus on the mundane instead of more positive things. Resolutions need not be changes that profoundly alter your mental or physical well-being. Making fun resolutions will probably help you stick to them.

Perhaps you will resolve to spend more time with the kids or promise to try more adventurous activities. Maybe you decide it’s time pursue a hidden passion, such as music or art. Enjoyable resolutions are much easier to keep.

T Avoid expensive resolutions.

Before making a resolution, research how much a resolution might cost. Gym memberships or new hobbies may stretch your budget, and if you cannot afford a

resolution, how can you keep it? If money is a concern, choose resolutions that are fiscally possible.

T Keep resolutions private if you so prefer. Many people are compelled to share their resolutions with friends and family.

However, that can lead to feelings of competition or animosity if someone is realizing goals before you. Feel free to keep your resolution private as you go through the process. Once you have met your goal, then you can share your success with others.

T Don’t give up too easily. Some people are up for a challenge and others are not. Resolutions typically require a little extra effort, especially in the early stages. Resolutions will not necessarily be easy to keep, but the longer you stick to a resolution the easier it becomes to make it a reality, so resist the temptation to throw in the towel too early.
