TONIGHT AT THE CIVIC CENTRE
Food Bank night at Nitro game C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca
The Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank is in the midst of its final fundraising campaign of the year — the Christmas hamper project. Each year the Food Bank puts out some 200 holiday hampers with all that’s needed for a Christmas feast as well as gifts for children. One of the key components of the year-end fundraising for the Food Bank is the annual Food Bank Dynamiters Hockey Game. This will be the ninth rendition of the game. “So far these games have raised about $20,000 in food over the years,” said the Food Bank’s Malcolm Fruin. “That’s pretty successful.”
Those who attend tonight’s home game against Castlegar are asked to bring a non-perishable food item. In return you will get a draw ticket for a lot of great prizes, generously donated by local merchants. During the second intermission the annual fall raffle will be drawn. Tickets will be available at the game until draw time. First prize is $1000 furnished by Meadowbrook Greenhouse, seonc prize is box seats for 11 at a Kootenay ICE game, complete with refreshments and third prize is two nights accommodation from Kimberley Lodging Company. “We’re looking forward to a good crowd as usual,” Fruin said. “Everyone always has quite a bit of fun.”

First Saturdays under discussion C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

First Saturdays began in Kimberley this past summer as a way to drive traffic into the downtown area and create something to fill the void left by the loss of KIOTAC. There is no doubt the concept as a whole was successful, and several of the Saturdays were very well attended indeed. Recently stakeholders met to discuss the successes and where improvements could be made. The First Saturdays concept is a simple one — on the first Saturday of every month in the tourist season, get enough events going at the same time to attract people. In other words give people a reason to get out and enjoy what Kimberley has to offer. First Saturdays were championed by the Kimberley Arts Council in 2013, and the Council’s Carol Fergus says they are willing to take the lead again next year, but would hope others get on board as well.
