Notes from teen found on roof after two decades BY LORNE ECKERSEY Advance Staff

We have letters all over the roof!! OPEN NOW! When Terry-Joe Henry and her husband were re-shingling their roof on 24th Avenue North last spring, they came across an unexpected surprise. A series of notes appeared, tucked under shingles and having survived the elements as long as 25 years. “It certainly surprised us — it’s hard to believe they have survived all this time,” she said, offering the notes to the Advance. “We thought it might make an interesting story.”

were among the students from Yahk Elementary School who took part in a soapbox derby on Nov. 13. The soapbox project was funded by a $2,450 ArtStart grant that allowed Yahk artist Dan Danylak to assist the construction for two days a week since September. Seniors also helped with the Flinstones-themed project, which helped students learn math and safe constructions skills, used lumber partially donated by Home Hardware Building Centre. Winners of the derby were Claira Calliou (kindergarten), Kali Blackmore (Grade 1), Kaleb Calliou (Grade 2), Misty Blackmore (Grade 3), Cicy Blackmore (Grade 4), Malachi Blackmore (Grade 5) and Shelbie Blackmore (Grade 7).

Today is June 30/88 This is my Grandparents’ house. We got out of school yesterday. On July 3rd I will be 12. Awesome huh? And I’m not supposed to be on the roof. Bye Miriam Anderson

Greeting Card

The demand for hampers has been increasing in our community over the last few years, with over 400 given out. Starting Nov. 25, in stores and public places throughout Creston, you will find decorated collection boxes with a Book Under Every Tree poster on them. They will remain there until Dec. 13 to receive your donated books. Please remember to pick up a book for a child or an adult when you are out doing your Christmas shopping for your own family. New books are preferred. Please only contribute a used book if it looks new (no scratches, damage or names written in it.) You would not want to get an obviously used book for Christmas yourself, would you? •••

ot something to say about what’s going on in Creston? Mayor Ron Toyota and the town’s top public safety officials are inviting you to join them for a cup of coffee and an informal chat about whatever’s on your mind.

With your contribution to the Creston Christmas Hamper Fund, your name will be added to the Community Greeting Card appearing in the Special Tuesday December 24 issue of the Creston Valley Advance. Minimum $10 cash or cheque donations accepted until Friday, December 13, at the Creston Valley Advance office.

The first in a series of monthly Coffee Talk sessions will be held 9:30-11 a.m. Nov. 26 at the Creston Valley Bakery. Joining Toyota will be RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan, Creston Fire Rescue Chief Mike Moore and public safety compliance officer Eric Graham. “I think there are a lot of people out there who want to ask a question, but they’re not going to take that extra step of walking into town hall,” said Toyota. “A lot of these concerns are based on public safety, so why not get those individuals to sit at a table, and if anyone wants to join us and talk, they can. Surely between the four of us we can figure out an answer.” There’s no agenda for the casual meeting, and the topic of conversation will be entirely determined by the questions people ask. “Nothing’s off limits,” says Toyota. “This is about finding out what’s on people’s minds and how we can appropriately address their concerns. I’m really looking forward to being a part of that conversation.”

From page 1 “We want to be able to tell people when they move here and the program starts that the community is behind them,” said Laura Hannant, facilitator of partnerships for community development at the College of the Rockies. So far, Regional District of Central Kootenay Area A and the Town of Creston have each donated $1,500 to the Beginner Farmer Bursary Drive, with several more in the works. A half-dozen more could be used, though, so Hannant has been approaching local businesses and service organizations to gather the rest. Registration for the program opened on Oct. 28, and even before that, calls from interested students have been coming in from across Canada and the U.S., and as far away as the U.K. At just over $5,300, it’s one of the most affordable programs of its type in North America. “People are really excited about the program, and we’re trying to get them excited about the community, too,” said Hannant. She said they’re looking at the program as a smaller-scale version of the doctor recruitment program — show the newcomers community support and what’s available in the Creston Valley, and they will want to stay. “People who are coming to do the training bring all kinds of other skills,” said Hannant. “We’re looking at this as a way to bring young families to the valley.” For more information about the bursary program, contact COTR’s Creston campus at 250-428-5332 or 1-866-740-2687.

Her family must have either put them back or not found all of them.” Hello there! This is my grandparents house. I’m not supposed to go on the roof, but I sneak up. My cousin and I (when she comes) usually put letters under shingles. My cousin, Lise, isn’t here, but I’m going to put this letter under a shingle anyway. We have letters all over the roof! My name is Miriam Jane Anderson. I am 12 and will be 13 July 3! Today is June 17/89. See ya! P.S. I live here in Creston! Anderson, daughter of Carol and music teacher Monte Anderson, said she has fond memories of summer in Creston. “Many highlights of my childhood were the visits to Creston of my cousins from Calgary,” she said. “On my dad’s side, there are 10 grandchildren, nine of which were girls, and three of which were within two years of my age. I loved it when they came to town and remember many adventures at my grandparents’ home. I remember a pinecone fight in the backyard, picking cherries from an old Queen Anne tree, pushing a smaller cousin on a swing, doing puzzles and eating homemade buns and angel food cake. My grandparents’ home was old and large, full of nooks and crannies. I loved climbing into cupboards and broom closets and finding keepsakes that had been stored away. “I remember getting up to the roof by climbing up on a woodpile. From the roof, we could look over the water reservoir that’s at the top of Crawford Hill. I remember going up to the roof with several of my cousins, but spending the most time up there with my cousin, Lise. We would have been 12 or 13 and

just spent our time up there talking about friends, boys, our families and the future. I think I liked the roof because being up there was secret; we always enjoyed being out of the adults’ sight. “I’m not sure whose idea it was to write notes. I remember writing them and thinking about some family far into the future who would discover them. I assumed they’d be curious about who had lived in the house before and I wanted them to know about all of us.” May 20/90 to the shingle makers, hi it’s me again except in 1990 (Lise Floer). I am now 13 and in grade 7. this is still my gradma’s (sic) house and grandpa’s house and with the same shingles?! (I can’t believe I’m doing this). I now live on the other side of Calgary at 132 Deercross Rd. S.E. My phone number is 271-2921. Oh, I have the most wonderful boyfriend, his name is Randy and we’ve been going steady since April 15, 1990. he is 15 and in grade 8, it is our first month together on the 29th of May 1990. Well I gotta go, lise. Yo, I’m Lise’s cousin. My grandparents still live here except, I don’t know for how much longer since it’s for sale. I’m 13 and in grade 8. My

violin group, The Fiddlers Hatchery, got back from Washington D.C. a month ago. I’ll make a diagram of our family tree. From Miriam Anderson Lise (Floer) Salatino, who still lives in Calgary and works in the lighting business, expressed similar surprise that the notes had survived all this time. “I spent each summer as a kid packing up and boarding the red eye Greyhound out to Creston with my little sister,” she wrote. “I always looked forward to the simple life as I am from the big city of Calgary. “Both of my sets of grandparents live in Creston so I had a lot of family to visit. I was very fortunate. My grandmother (who had the big house on the hill, with the notes) was very dear to me then and still is as I am so lucky to still have her in my life. She is now 97 and still remembers my birthday! “That ‘big ol’ house on the hill’, as everyone called it, was my favorite place to be as a child. I still remember the smell and the sounds at night. I always slept with my Grandma, not sure why but immediately brought my bag right into her room as soon as I arrived. It was a second home. I loved those nights of reading Bible

stories and praying with her little night lamp on. “I remember the patio furniture was made of old tractor seats that my grandfather made. The trees were so large and beautiful and so full of fruit — the best jams were made from those trees! It seemed so far up and steep as a child, especially when we walked down and up from the pool. Grandma would make us pick strawberries in the morning to make the $2 entrance fee to swim all day. We would swim for eight hours sometimes … and never wear sunscreen! “I don’t know what made us adventure up onto the rooftop, but I remember feeling like it was a safe and quiet place where Miriam and I could talk about everything and anything while admiring the mountains and the reservoir. I would love to sit there again and enjoy those memories. Especially with the smell of Grandma’s homemade cinnamon buns coming up from out the window. “I cherish all those memories and still drive up that hill every time I visit Creston. Thank you for the trip down memory road!” “The discovery of the notes was a pleasant surprise,” Anderson said. “I hadn’t thought about them in years, and couldn’t believe that they’d lasted until now.”

Council against Post banking plan BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

and Jerry Schmalz were absent for personal reasons.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers proposal for Canada Post to get into the banking business isn’t likely to get much support from Creston town council. The first item on the Nov. 12 regular meeting agenda was a request for support from CUPW to help stem service and job cuts to Canada Post. With the dramatic drop in demand for its services, Canada Post is faced with finding new ways to increase revenues or reduce services. CUPW is asking local governments, businesses and organizations to push Canada Post and the federal government “to do everything in its power to prevent additional cuts … and instead deal with financial issues by adding revenue-generating services like many other post offices around the world, including lucrative financial services like bill payments, insurance and banking,” a letter to council said. “Receive for information,” Coun. Wesly Graham moved. The motion was passed unanimously without discussion at a meeting in which Couns. Joanna Wilson

Council Briefs •In what can only be described as a bit of housekeeping, town council received the minutes of the past four meetings of the Creston Valley Spirit Committee, all under the name of Schmalz, who was absent for three of those meetings. •Council agreed to a request to pay $661.89 to help offset the rental costs at the community complex for the annual Creston Ministerial Association Christmas hamper packing and distribution. •A discretionary grant of $1,500 was approved to provide for a bursary to a student, preferably a town resident, of the new beginner farmer training program at the College of the Rockies. •A Creston Curling Centre request for funding to assist with the costs of hosting the 2014 Provincial Masters Curling Playdowns in March resulted in the approval of a $500 grant. •The fire training grounds facility, which is used to train firefighters, got a $5,000 boost from the Creston Valley Rotary Club.

“We see the facility as a complex that can better ensure the volunteers and the citizens of Creston Valley,” wrote club president Tim Park. •Staff and council appointees will soon begin to create terms of reference for a community and business development select committee to work on improving the local business climate. When the framework is completed, several business and chamber of commerce appointees will be added to the committee. •A request from First Creston Scouts for financial help was referred to the 2014 budget process. The group, which plans to send eight scouts and five leaders to an international event in Great Britain in 2014, was also encouraged to apply for a Columbia Basin Trust grant next year. •Council received a draft report on recommendations from the Columbia River Treaty local governments’ committee for review. •A rezoning application to allow a duplex in the 400 block of Ninth Avenue North to be expanded to a fourplex was given first and second readings, allowing staff to proceed with notification of area residents and a public hearing.

Bird festival seeking poster art submissions CRESTON VALLEY BIRD FEST

The May 9-11, 2014, second annual Creston Valley Bird Fest is taking flight. The festival committee would like to purchase a festival art piece that will be used to advertise the event in a poster form. The art will also appear on the front cover of the festival program cover with an artist’s profile on the inside. Interested artists are invited to submit a high-quality photo stating the medium and dimensions to Jim Jacobsen at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce by 5 p.m. Dec. 31. Aritsts are free to choose their

medium. An identifiable bird theme is preferred, and simple clean images are best. Remember to leave space for text in your composition. Strong colour will attract attention to the poster. Busy backgrounds will clash with the print. Images in a vertical format will have an advantage. For more information, please contact committee chair Tanna Patterson at 250-428-5246 or info@ crestonvalleybirds.ca. The festival committee looks forward to making its juried selection for the festival art in January 2014. The art piece will then be auctioned silently during the bird festival as a festival fundraiser.

Thunder Cats win two to hang on to first place BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Two weekend wins helped the Creston Valley Thunder Cats maintain their first-place position and pull farther ahead in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Thunder Cats now have 28 points, five more than the Fernie Ghostriders, and seven more than their weekend rivals, the Kimberley Dynamiters and Columbia Valley Rockies, who are tied for third place with 21. Kimberley’s rink is often a difficult one to play in, said Thunder Cats head coach Josh Hepditch, but a “good group effort” resulted in a 5-2 win. “They’re a tough team and they compete hard,” Hepditch said. “We had two good periods, and then just seemed to explode in the third period.” Logan Styler scored the Thunder Cats’ first goal at 7:20 in the first period, with two Kimberley goals following before the period’ end. Colby Livingstone tied the game at 4:18 in the second period, with Jaymes Veitch and Styler adding goals in the third period, before Brandon Formosa scored Creston’s fifth, an unassisted empty-netter at 1:03.

Saturday’s 9-6 victory over the Columbia Valley Rockies was a solid team effort, said Hepditch, with every line contributing. The Rockies goaltending suffered later in the game, which also helped. “We kept scoring and they didn’t,” he said. Carson Cartwright scored the Thunder Cats’ first goal on a power play at 14:47 in the first period, with Colton St. John and Styler adding goals at 6:50 and 1:32, respectively. Each Creston goal was followed by a Rockies goal for a 3-3 tie at the end of the period. Cartwright scored a shorthanded goal at the beginning of the second period, and the Rockies bounced back after that with three of their own — which were their last in the game. Jonathon Watt, Styler and Jesse Collins scored to edge ahead of the Rockies 7-2. The third period saw no scoring until 2:45, when Trevor Hanna scored on a power play, with Marcel Fuchs adding the Thunder Cats’ ninth at 0:53. Hepdtich credited the line of Hanna, Collins and Formosa with much of the game’s success, with Hanna earning five points in that game, for a total of seven on the weekend. Styler also played well,

Like the Advance on Facebook at facebook.com/cvadvance

Hepditch said, with two goals on Friday and four assists on Saturday. This week, the Thunder Cats are away again, this time for a three-game road trip. Tonight, they will visit the Golden Rockets, who currently sit at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division with 14 points. “They’re in last place, but they beat us last time we were there,” said Hepditch. “You’ve got to play a full game. They’re not just giving over wins. You have to go in and earn them.” The same advice holds true, he said, for the Revelstoke Grizzlies when the Thunder Cats visit on Friday night. Despite a bad start to the season, the Grizzlies have been playing well, although they are at the bottom of the Doug Birks Division, with 16 points, 22 behind the first-place Kamloops Storm. On Saturday, the Thunder Cats finish their road trip by taking on the Sicamous Eagles, in fourth place in the Doug Birks Division with 20 points. “I think they have a better team than their numbers show,” said Hepdtich. “It’s going to be a tough weekend. These are three games you’ve got to be mentally strong for.”

Do you ever get the idea that the good ship Democracy has sailed and that we weren’t invited to the bon voyage party? I refer to the further transfer of traditional government powers to the private sector, much like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) did when it was ratified. While there is plenty of evidence that it has been positive for the overall economy of the signatory nations, it is also undeniable that we have seen the decimation of our manufacturing industry, the erosion of the middle class, more money landing in the pockets of the top one per cent of “earners” and family incomes that have stayed static, in real dollar terms, ever since. The signs are all around us, but none provided a clearer confirmation than news of another international agreement that Canada is about to sign on to. And no, I’m not referring to the free trade agreement with Europe. In a recent story on the online news service the Tyee, Gus Van Harten, an associate professor at the Osgoode Hall Law School, commented on the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), an arm of the World Bank. ICSID provides a framework under which investors, typically global corporations, can sue governments. It isn’t hard to see how these claims can come about. Think, for instance, what might happen if B.C.’s full tilt boogie entry into the development of shale gas reserves

Books don’t seem to be dying

“The report of my death was an exaggeration.” —Mark Twain, June 2, 1897) One of the most common rumours that I find myself compelled to dispel — second only to the completely unfounded rumour that Elvis is employed at the library under an assumed name — relates to the imminent demise of the beloved book. Although there are probably books being written on the subject as we speak, in researching this article, I turned first to Google. My search query, “is the book dead”, came up with over a billion results, with the definitive answer appearing in the third site listed, isthebookdead.com. The site consists of a single word written in bold white text on a striking red background: “No.” There are many books that I wish were dead: The Complete Book of Ethnic Humour by Larry Wilde, Sex Lives of Animals Without Backbones by Haig Najarian, Knitting with Dog Hair by

morning storytime and watch the tornado hit. You might think that, as a librarian, I have a vested interest in defending books. On the contrary, a librarian’s stock in trade is not the books themselves, but knowledge and information. My job is to promote and, when necessary, defend equitable and democratic access to knowledge, regardless of its form. But I do have a personal attachment to the printed page. From the fairy tales of my childhood to my graduate school course readings, books and stories have had an immeasurably profound impact on my life. Nowadays, sharing this love of books with my young son is one of the most important and enjoyable responsibilities that I have as a father. This works out to over 15 printed books checked out for every person in the town of Creston. In a recent poll, 75 per cent of Americans stated that they preferred printed books to ebooks, and 87 per cent said that printed books are better for reading together with children. Worldwide, there were over two million new books published in print form in 2012. J.K. Rowling has earned over $1 billion through her books, while James Patterson raked in $94 million in 2012 alone. Children and teens love books too. While ebook sales have flattened out in 2013, demand for printed children’s and teen books continues to grow. Canada’s Senate must be abolished To the Editor: I have made all Canadian people a promise that I will make a relentless pursuit to have the embattled Senate abolished. As everyone has seen recently in the battle going on in Ottawa of the abuse by some of the members in regard to false expense claims, it is nothing new and has been done for years. I have written the Harper government that we need to have an elected Senate. As it is right now, the appointed Senate is controlled by the elected government. I don’t find that acceptable. Take a good look at the mess we’re in. I and others knew all along about the abuse by the senators. We, the taxpayers, have had enough. Period. We have nothing but disdain for the likes of Duffy and other guilty members who are abusing their positions. Now, due to our writing, they will be out of their positions with no pay and no severance. These three senators are just the tip of the iceberg. When the voters elect a Senate of their choosing, they will keep the government in line so the current mess does not happen again. In a matter related to this mess, take a look at the trading market. Who would want to invest with us? I would not, and believe me, we need foreign investment. In passing, I have stated that I would welcome an educated person

with impeccable credentials to come forward and lead us in forming a new government. I have in mind such a person, if she will concede to give up retirement and say yes to our plight: former member of Parliament Deborah Gray. Richard Cote Creston

Committee clarifies info in article To the Editor: We, the Teen Action Committee, would like to address the article published in the Creston Valley Advance on Oct. 17 regarding the allocation of the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) funds. At the regular meeting on Oct. 8, Creston town council was told, “A four year, $100,000.00 Columbia Basin Trust grant will be spent on providing programs for Creston Valley’s Youth, and not on creating a permanent youth centre.” We would like to address this as old and inaccurate information. The Teen Action Committee (TAC) plans to use the $100,000 in many different ways over the next four years. In the first year, we plan to create and build awareness by hosting a series of activities and events for youth in the Creston Valley. In the second year, we plan to build upon existing programs and look toward developing a permanent youth centre. In the third year, we will be looking for sustainable funding for the youth centre. In the fourth and final year, we should have completed

or have plans for a youth centre that will be accessible at more youth-friendly times. All the while, we will be hosting fundraising events for the centre. Our funding will be used for programs to increase our budget to attain our final goal of establishing a permanent youth centre. When we first applied for the CBT grant, the top three needs expressed were hiring a co-ordinator, attaining a youth centre and hosting teen based programs and events. The article also mentions, “After the four years are up, there should be a clearer indication of whether a youth space is needed or of existing facilities are the best answer.” The Teen Action Committee strongly feels that the existing facilities are not an adequate solution, as they are not directed specifically towards the needs of the Creston youth. We think the facilities need to be bigger, require teen-friendly hours (such as 9 a.m.-11 p.m.) and boast a teen atmosphere. Although we are very grateful and do appreciate of the space that we have been allowed to use thus far, we do have higher goals and ambitions for a teen space in the Creston Valley. The Teen Action Committee has every intention to see this through over the next four years, regardless of how the funding is put to use. We ask that any future questions regarding how the funds are being utilized, what the Teen Action Committee is planning or even how you can get involved with events or programming, be directed to teen advocate Ashley Allin-Gareau at ashley.allin@live.com, or official TAC representatives Isaac Miller or Tierney Hula. We are open to answering any questions any of you may have. Ashley Allin-Gareau, Teen Advocate, on behalf of the Teen Action Committee

ballot in the last provincial election, while the B.C. average was 52 per cent. For young people, they don’t vote as much as their older counterparts. An Elections BC report on the 2009 election revealed that 74 per cent of those aged 70-74 voted, while only 34 per cent of those 24 and under did the same. Although the final analysis isn’t out, this last election likely had similar results. And why is that? Some say it’s the electoral system, but there is no evidence to support that since young voter turnout is low in all electoral systems. Rather, studies show that limited registration and education opportunities are major contributors. Other factors also include real tactics right wing parties have used to suppress voter turnout among those demographics most likely to vote for progressive parties: women, low-income households and youth. So think about that. Brand is mad that the rich keep getting richer, and he’s not going to vote? Sounds like he’s played right into their hands. Oh yeah, and they vote. Instead, imagine if young people thanked Brand for his controversial moneymaking quips and refused to take his advice on voting. Imagine if young people doubled their voter turnout to match their grandparents’. Now that’d be a revolution. Michelle Mungall is the member of the legislative assembly for the Nelson-Creston provincial riding, and is the Opposition critic for social development.

The world in Gray Creek

Everybody has a ferry story or two. They will be about a missed sailing, or about the wind that blew the Anscomb all the way to Pilot Peninsula, or about a particular Christmas Eve crossing, all

The Voice of

Experience Betsy Brierley the cars jammed onto the smaller Balfour as the storm waves crashed over the bow. There are even stories of an already-departing ferry reversing to pick up a car that arrived a few seconds late. Tom Lymbery of Gray Creek confirms that the Anscomb did make a habit of going back for tardy cars, as long as the ferry hadn’t started to turn around. Tom knows a lot about the lake area, and he has written a book about it. Part 1 of Tom’s Gray Creek: A Kootenay Lake Memoir is being published this month. I remember a family trip to Kamloops via the ferries on a snowy Sunday in December. Our 1969 Volvo did not have the required oomph to make it over the

hill to Kootenay Bay. Apparently, the gas line was freezing. In Crawford Bay nothing was open. Our only hope was the Gray Creek Store, which is where we found the stuff you squirt into the gas tank to make the car go. You can still find anything you need (or don’t need) at the store, which has been operated by the Lymbery family since 1913. Tom Lymbery writes in detail about the history of the business. But he writes about so much more: about the families who settled, had children, established a school and a hall, raised fruit, went to war, struggled to make a living, lost children, and went on. Tom’s Gray Creek is a fascinating compilation of reminiscences, historical data, photos, maps and writings of the personalities who lived on the East Shore. It has good guys and bad guys, heartache and romance, comedy and tragedy. The glossary alone is entertainment. The book features the beloved sternwheelers that served the lake communities in the first half of the last century, and the convolutions of Kootenay travel in the days before roads. When his father enlisted for the First World War, his journey began on the sternwheeler to Nelson, then train to Robson, “the overnight sternwheeler to Arrowhead and a local train to Revelstoke,” and finally connection with the main Canadian Pacific Railway line to Vancouver. As early as 1931, Greyhound buses traveled the newly completed dusty lake road; later modifications to the SS Nasookin allowed them to be transported cross-wise on its bow to the other side of the lake. Many of Tom’s experiences are unexpected. In 1939 the Gray Creek oneroom-school class of eight students, a

teacher and a chaperone (Tom’s mother) were treated to a trip to Banff in two cars to coincide with the visit of King George VI and Elizabeth. Tom writes, “Many of us had never been even as far as Creston, so a four-day trip to Banff and back was a tremendous adventure.” In 1940 he witnessed an amphibious Grumman Goose taxi to the Gray Creek beach during a reconnaissance to search out landing sites across B.C. The war came to Gray Creek in other more significant ways, and so did the Depression. The book resonates with me. I now realize my first ferry ride must have been one of the last sailings made by the Nasookin from Gray Creek wharf. My father, Vaughan Mosher, was working for the Water Rights Branch as a hydraulic engineer, locating snow courses (for measuring snowpack) in the Kootenays. He established the course in the Gray Creek watershed. Among his jottings I found a couple of paragraphs from 1947. On the day mentioned, he, my mother and I were driving to Nelson, where we would eventually live for three years before moving to Creston. He wrote, “We travelled the narrow gravel road to the ferry at Gray Creek, and of course missed the boat by five minutes. I guess I must have made a rude remark, because when we reached the Nelson ferry and missed it, too, my daughter leaned over to me and said, ‘Another damn ferry, eh, Dad?’ ” (Tom Lymbery writes on topics of historical interest for the East Shore Mainstreet. His book is published by Gray Creek Publishing, edited by Frances Roback, designed by Warren Clark. Everyone who participated in the book process lives on the East Shore.) Betsy Brierley lives beside Kootenay Lake. She used to write for the Advance a long time ago.

Rec centre offers great experience

Overheard from a gentleman chatting with a building supply store cashier during a purchase: “My daughter came for a visit last weekend and I didn’t know what to do around town, so we ended up going swimming at the rec centre. Man, what a great experience! I had never been there but it was fantastic and so clean. What a great facility!”

During a recent programming department meeting, I asked our aquatic and recreation programmer as well as our head fitness tech what brings them to work each day. While your first thought might be perhaps the love of writing reports, hunching before a tepidlylit computer screen or last-minute covering for instructors stuck in their driveway or plagued by the Norwalk virus, that would be incorrect. CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Nov. 15-17 was a busy weekend for Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s midget parents and players as they hosted teams from Alberta and the East Kootenay in their home tournament. Cranbrook and Windermere Valley Rockies started the tournament Friday afternoon, with Windermere taking the first win 5-2. The Creston Chiefs’ debut was the second game, Friday evening, against the Glenlake Hawks. In the first period, the Chiefs scored twice. The first goal was made at 18:01 by Eddie Blackmore, assisted by Zack King, and the second was made by Carlos Blackmore, assisted by Michael Makoroff. Glenlake answered the call, scoring in the second period at 17:21. Creston sealed the game with Owen Blackmore scoring their third goal in the second period at 14:58, assisted by Makoroff and Carlos, for a final score of 3-1. The final game on Friday was between the Cochrane Rockies and Springbank, a solid game that Cochrane won 4-2. Early Saturday morning, the fans gathered again to cheer on Glenlake and Windermere. Windermere dominated with a 12-2 win. Game 5 of the tournament found Cochrane and Cranbrook face to face for a very close and exciting game! Fans were on the edge of their seats for this game, with Cranbrook finally taking the win in the third period for a 3-2 win. Creston faced off at 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon against Springbank. Creston dominated the game in the first period, scoring four goals, with the first by Jacob Kolodychuk, the second by Eddie, the third by Devon Ferguson and the fourth by Kolodychuk, assisted by Josh Samuels. Springbank finally broke the ice, scoring their first goal at 7:28 in the second period. Creston continued the work, scoring four more goals — by Samuels, Kolodychuk, Eddie and Kieran Simpson — in the second period and four more in the third period, by Carlos, Samuels, Zack Van Ruyskensvelde and Eddie, for a final score of 12-1. Game 7 found Cranbrook and Glenlake challenging one another with a 16-0 win for Cranbrook. On Saturday evening, Windermere

and Springbank faced off, with the 9-0 win going to Windermere. Saturday’s final game was the Creston Chiefs taking on Cochrane Rockies. Cochrane took the first point in the first period. Creston worked hard to gain their first point in the second period, and at 15:42, Samuels tipped Talon Maatz’s slapshot into the net, assisted by Kolodychuk. Cochrane answered back, scoring at 9:07. Simpson evened the score at 4:48, assisted by Kolodychuk and Samuels. It was a nail-biting third period when, with only 9:14 remaining in the game, Samuels scored again, assisted by Ethan Plotnikoff for a 3-2 win for Creston. The Sunday finals matched up Sprinbank and Glenlakes, resulting in Springbank taking fifth place and Glenlake taking sixth, after a 5-1 win for Springbank. Cochrane secured fourth place, losing 6-1 to Cranbrook. The final game of the tournament was fought between Creston and Windermere, the only two teams undefeated going into the finals. It was a hard battle, but Creston’s only goal by Samuels was not enough, and Windermere won 4-1 to place first in the tournament.

Creativity thriving at TAPS

Thanks to Creston Rotary Club community service co-ordinator Brenda Silke for making the Christmas card project with the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors and students from the special education program a success. On the weekend, the card packages were sold at the Krafty Kronys sale, and you might have seen last week’s paper showing Mayor Ron Toyota buying the first one. Watch for them around town at Creston Card and Stationery, the

Cresteramics gift shop on Canyon Street and at the Creston Valley Farmer’s Market. The proceeds are a fundraiser for both TAPS and Rotary projects. There’s no doubt that a project involving a creative pursuit was popular amongst TAPS folks, as each time the original group met to work on them, more and more people wanted to join in around the already crowded table. Thanks to Eileen Gidman, who has a gift of bringing her professional arts abilities with a sensitivity to individual needs and abilities. Thanks also to volunteer Claudette Watt for her weekly assistance. Continuing the arts side of things, we’re excited to be planning an arts program for TAPS to start in January, with 16 weeks of classes with local artists, and extending the fun to community arts events over the spring and summer. More details to follow as funding becomes available. “By the time you’re eighty years old you’ve learned everything. You only have to remember it,” said comedian George Burns.

From page 8 The common theme tended to be the impact one could make on an individual, family or group coming to the facility — call it the happiness factor or whatever, it is knowing that you are directly responsible for or part of a team that is improving people’s lives. We are lucky enough to be one of those few workplaces that provide a direct health or active living service to patrons, as well as getting to see the benefit of our contribution, whether it is keeping the place clean or creating a specific program or special event. A large part of personal gratification comes from hearing statements like the gentleman in the store — I key in on how it wasn’t just a great swim or great hot tub; it was a great experience. In my mind, it should start with driving into the parking lot, finding a decent space and well-lit, clean sidewalks right through to pleasant front end staff, a clean and well laid out lobby and directions, shiny change rooms and welcoming lifeguard staff. We haven’t even gotten in the water yet, which is sparkling and perfectly balanced. It should all be an experience, and when it’s a good one, that makes our day. I look at the evolution of this place and what it has become, in many ways surpassing the vision what even the design team foresaw in the initial stages. I’m working out in the fitness area at the same time as a physiotherapist is working with a young girl in a walker, several members of the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors — which has an average age of 82 — are doing a half-dozen laps next to the large, bench-pressing dude with tattoos up his arm and neck just down from a bunch of 14-year-old girls on the treadmills and some Creston Valley Thunder Cats players are using stability balls, while one of our personal trainers details a rehab process for a client. Where else would you see that diversity of community in one place, all working on staying healthy? Call my outlook Pollyannaish. I have always written accordingly — knowing you are fully capable of tapping into the opposite outlook simply by turning on the TV or opening a newspaper (not this one, of course). We certainly also recognize the impact of user fees, taxation and endless volunteering hours of the user groups that make the place function as it does. One thought that always sticks with me was not long after we opened, one of the more vocal opponents of the project came in with his family to swim and basically said, “It’s here now. We have to make sure it gets used by the community.” That’s our job — even though we have surpassed 150,000 patron visits in a year, we want to keep increasing those usage numbers, even if it’s one patron at a time discovering how they can have a great experience at the community complex. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Arcane Garden offering deep, atmospheric concert SUBMITTED

The Arcane Garden is a musical collaboration between Michelle Moss and William Chapman, who will be joined by special guests Marty Carter (winds) and Ben Johnson (percussion) at the Snoring Sasquatch on Nov. 30. Moss has been singing, writing songs and performing for 20 years. Chapman has an extensive industry history: performing, producing, and/or engineering for various artists such as Strange Advance, D.O.A., Randy Bachman, Neil Young, and Long John Baldry. After first connecting in Vancouver, the two relocated to the Kootenays, near Nelson, where they built a small project studio and now continue to explore their musical relationship.

The self-titled CD, The Arcane Garden, is their first offering, released independently in December 2008, containing 10 tracks of original music covering a wide range of genres: trip hop, downtempo, drum ’n’ bass, and ambient. Dig Deep was the second release, which included performances from guest musicians including the legendary Ellen McIlwaine. This offering provided even more diversity and intensity. Seed is their third release, once again including guest performances that expand the groups sound and sonic palette. All the material is groove-oriented, deep, atmospheric and very heavily layered, featuring Chapman’s composition, programming, performance and production skills, and Moss’s evocative vocal

fretless bass, Moss singing, and a compliment of assorted live players providing additional live elements. The Arcane Garden is receiving local airplay (Kootenay Co-op Radio) and has been approved for programming on at least two Internet radio streams produced by SomaFM in San Francisco. The Arcane Garden’s live shows seem to consistently gain them very passionate new fans from across a very broad range of people. Perhaps this is because they have found a balance fusing modern music styles with haunting melodies and strong song structure. Tickets are $8 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Black Bear Books and Buffalo Trails Coffee House, and $12 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

The Boom Booms have wrapped up a successful tour of Brazil, which included sold out performances in both Rio de Janeiro and Manaus, playing for 1,000 people in the heart of the Amazon. While on tour, the band fell in love with the Brazilian culture, music and people. They created a series of videos to raise awareness for the Belo Monte Dam in the Amazon rainforest that is destroying and displacing a huge number of locals and causing an ecological disaster. “Watch for these guys, because, as the good people of Brazil will happily confirm, they are onto something special,” said a reviewer in the Georgia Straight. The Boom Booms are a Vancouver-based sixpiece rock-pop band that is returning Nov. 27 to the Snoring Sasquatch. Since their 2007 launch, the Boom Booms have built a loyal fanbase that stretches across generations. The video for their feel-good party

anthem, When the Night, reached No. 6 on the Much More Music chart in 2008 and was optioned for an episode of 90210. Delivered, a surreal banjo ballad that conjures up images of a jungle river baptism, garnered an award for best roots song at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards in Nashville, Tenn. In 2011, the Boom Booms released their debut album, Hot Rum. This album, along with their strong live performance and incredible stage presence, earned the sextet a spot in the 2011 Peak Performance Project, B.C.’s most prestigious contest for emerging musicians. They went on to win second place and picked up a cash prize of $75,000. The Boom Booms recently performed in front of thousands of fans at the 2012 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival and took part in Sarah McLachlan’s Voices in the Park concert on Sept. 15. Tickets are $15 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Black Bear Books and Buffalo Trails Coffee House, and $18 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

Images returns with new work BY ELAINE ALFOLDY

A common theme of landscape runs through many of the Images Art Show and Sale painters’ descriptions of their work in 2013. The weather was beautiful to be outside in. Our guest painter this year is Alison Masters. I had the opportunity to visit Alison at work in Blairmore, Alta., in the Crowsnest Pass, in late September, where she was the artist in residence, chosen by the University of Lethbridge. Karen Arrowsmith and I found Masters and her sister-in-law painting side-byside in the small home they were given for a month. Coleman, looking down on the rooftops, will be featured in some of Masters’ large acrylic paintings, which were rapidly filling the small home. Gunda Stewart’s experimentation with glazes on her wood fired pottery always has me coveting pieces. We look forward to seeing you at Rotacrest Hall from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 23 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 24. Admission is free, and door prizes (artist cards by Images artists and tickets to Footlighters Theatre Society’s Almost Golden) will be offered. We all bring our best and recent work to show in a widening variety of mediums each year: Alison Masters: “As I become more skilled as an artist, I realize how little control I have of the paintings I consider my best. It is as if my work is tempered by another force, similar to how fire changes a pot for a potter. I will be showing large acrylic paintings from three ongoing series: orchards, hill views of Creston and town scenes of Coleman in the Crowsnest Pass.” Ute Bachinski: Aside from landscape pastels of this gorgeous valley, Bachinski has branched out a bit lately. With the Harris family’s permission, she’s been drawing cows, piglets, fields and barns at their farm in Lister. Watching piglets run and eat and squeal and push (and eat some more)

delights her. They swoop so quickly, almost like a flock of birds. Bachinski says she’ll need more time — months, maybe — to really get the images she’s after. But in the meantime, standing in the big, lofty barn, hearing pigeons cooing way above her head, watching cows munching steadily is a most wonderful drawing experience. Karen Arrowsmith: She has been painting in watercolour for over 25 years. This summer she has focused on plein air painting in both the East Kootenay and Southern Alberta. Arrowsmtih loves the freedom that watercolor gives when on location. Plein air painting allows her to be close to her subjects and experience many of the senses (smell, hearing and sight) that she tries to convey in her work. Now that the weather is changing, Arrowsmith will focus on studio work, which requires detailed drawings and a more intense painting process. Both ways allow her to give a fresh approach to her work. Elaine Alfoldy: “I took opportunities to paint outdoors, resulting in watercolours of our area and in the Crowsnest Pass just inside Alberta. Being outdoors in our beautiful area painting is a direct opposite from the indoor work of creating fabric batik wall hangings using melted wax as a resist. I did this on our hottest days! I have always enjoyed the strong rich colours dyed fabric produces.” Gunda Stewart: “The wood-fired kiln continues to fascinate and inspire me. Ongoing exploration of ash glazes this year has yielded a variety of lovely surfaces for the subtly changing forms that evolve through this steady practice. There is joy in making the most beautiful pots I can for our table and for yours.” Carol Schloss, Pastel Society of America: “A trip to Banff last fall was a humbling experience in the presence and majesty of all those mountains. Who wouldn’t be inspired? I’ve always

had a fascination with rocks, and have tried to capture a little of that expansiveness and scale of the Rockies in some of my paintings this season. “I’ve also been exploring the relationship between nature and manmade objects, how nature eventually reclaims all as her own, turning the mundane into something nurturing and beautiful. What’s shiny and new soon wears the patina of age, or our best efforts at fencing here on the farm are thwarted by a fallen tree! Entropy and chaos and nature prevail. Our lives are never dull!” James McDowell: He continues to enjoy painting the landscape and beauty surrounding him on the family farm in Creston. This year, McDowell’s work is in oil and acrylic, primarily on hardboard. Summers find him in his garden, and fall and winter find him painting or building octave mandolins in his studio gallery, McDowell’s Hilltop Gallery. He is self-taught but brings the experience of a mature artist. He has exhibited in shows and venues in the Western United States and Canada. Eileen Hirota: With Hirota’s paintings, there continues to be a combination of realism along with abstract qualities, as well as more experimental abstract ones without the realism. Viewers will likely see a variety of possibilities — all of which is OK. This year, finches from the garden found their way into a painting, A Moment of Stillness. Many birds provide much enjoyment all year long. Other paintings develop on their own, after randomly texturing and applying paint, as far as subject matter or theme goes. Hirota says it’s always a delight to see what will surface next. The students taking the summer college mixed media course keep creating amazing paintings through this process. Andy Alfoldy: “After having done a fair bit of traveling this year, seeing many wonderful sights, I return to discover that we live in as inspiring a place as this planet has to offer. I hope to keep reflecting this in many of my works.”

Danuta Wiacek April 7, 1939 ~ November 8, 2013

Danuta was born in Poland on April 7, 1939 on a farm near Polanowka, now part of the Ukraine. After suffering many hardships in her early years during and after the Second World War, including the loss of her father and brother, she reached the safety of England with her mother in January 1948. In England she completed her secondary school certiÀcate at a Polish boarding school in Pitsford, Northampton, and then attended a secretarial school in EnÀeld. In 1958 she began working as a stenographer. As a young adult Danuta enjoyed dancing with friends at Polish clubs, where she met Marian on December 29, 1962. Love bloomed quickly and Danuta and Marian wed on July 27, 1963 in London. Family life soon followed with the arrival of Andrew, Richard and Helen over the span of four years. The family moved to Montreal, Quebec in 1974, and then to Mississauga, Ontario in 1979. The family became Canadian citizens in 1980. In 1988, Danuta and Marian moved to Holliston, Massachusetts where they spent many hours planning their retirement in the Kootenays. The couple bought property near Sanca, British Columbia in 1993, on which they built their dream log home overlooking Kootenay Lake. Full-time life in the Kootenays began in 1997. The couple soon developed and cherished many special friendships in their new community. Danuta was a vibrant, energetic and caring woman. She devoted her life to her family, friends and garden! She cherished her grandchildren deeply, and became immensely important in their lives. Her home was always open and inviting, and always Àlled with delicious home-made cakes and jams. After 17 years of happiness and fulÀlled dreams in the Kootenays, Danuta passed away following a short battle with cancer. In her Ànal days, she expressed gratitude for having lived a full life, and was at peace. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by family and friends. Danuta is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Marian; children Andrew (partner Charlene Bailey), Richard (wife Robin Gutsell) and Helen (husband Nick Fowler); grandchildren Matthew, Daniel, Heather and Caitlyn; sister Zosia (husband Bill Riddell); and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces in Poland. She is predeceased by her father Stanislaw Binieda, mother Regina (Binieda) Roznowska, brother Ryszard Binieda, step-father Tadeusz Roznowski and daughterin-law-Monica Scarabello. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Guy Roy Celebrant. ,n lieu of à owers and other gifts, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Thank you. Ella May Marshall (nee Frolak) October 25, 1929 ~ November 10, 2013

Ella passed away peacefully in the early morning of November 10, 2013, surrounded by the love of her family, and the wonderful care workers of Swan Valley Lodge. Ella was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and spent her childhood in Hillcrest, Creston, Pincher Creek and Coleman. Ella attended Henderson Secretarial School in Calgary, returning to Creston in 1947, where she worked as a secretary at the Creston Packing Shed and then as clerk at the Government Agent 2fĂ€ce. She worked there until she met and married her husband of 57 years, Bob Marshall. Ella was a loving wife, devoted mother to Sharlene, Debbie and Dale, and a very special grandmother to Caylee, Erin, Ryan, Ian, Lauren and Jack. Ella enjoyed and participated in many activities over the years: curling, bowling, bingo, card parties, and the trips to Reno. Ella’s favourite pastimes were camping, searching for antique bottles in the Creston area, especially “Back of Yahk,â€? but mostly spending time with her family. Ella enjoyed the arrival of the bluebirds and the Ă€rst wildĂ owers in the spring, especially the Lady Slippers on Mother’s Day. She will be remembered for her spiciness and her great sense of humour. Left to honour this wonderful lady are her husband Bob Marshall (and extended family), children and grandchildren: Sharlene (Gary) Stewart, Caylee and Ryan; Debbie (Rick) Tomaszewski, Erin (Ben) Ryland, and Ian; Dale (Alison) Marshall, Lauren and Jack; and her sister Mary Buckna (and extended family). We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the friends and family that visited Ella. Also, a special thanks to the Creston Valley Hospital and to the staff of Purcell Pod at Swan Valley Lodge. At Ella’s request there will be no service. ,n lieu of Ă owers those that wish to do so may donate to the 6wan 9alley Lodge the Children’s +osSital or a charity of their choice.

Welcome to the driver’s seat

The S3 really is the sweet spot for drivers that want to have extra power but with a very compliant and comfortable ride. Zack Spencer

Audi’s road ahead paved with more than good intentions 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet/S3 MONACO: Over the next 12 months or so, consumers are going to be treated to an onslaught of new entries into the premium market. Not to worry, the next wave of German sedans and convertibles are of a more affordable nature. Recently Mercedes Benz introduced their all-new CLA 250 at an eye-popping price of just $34,000 for a sleek and sexy sedan. Next year we will see the introduction of BMW’s new 1-series and 2-Series sedans, coupes and convertibles. Audi has been ahead of the curve as they helped pioneer this entry-level segment with the original, the A3 sportback, sold in Canada for years. The all-new Audi A3 sedan will arrive in March of 2014 and the convertible and more powerful S3 sedan will arrive in the fall of 2014. This week I had a chance to drive both the convertible and S3 in Monte Carlo, a full year ahead of their introduction here. Audi is one of the fastest growing premium brands and a big part of that is the variety of cars they offer. Unfortunately, we will no longer get the sportback, but the fact we get the rest of the line of A3s is exciting for buyers. Looks The A3 is built off a shared platform with VW called MQB. This platform was a significant investment for the VW group as it is lighter, bigger and stronger than the last Golf platform and provides a sturdy basis for the A3 Cabrio and S3. The new Cabriolet is 60kg lighter than the outgoing European model, yet the wheelbase is longer and the interior room and trunk more ample. It could be argued that Audi is building some of the most attractive cars these days and these smaller products still convey the same sense of power and solidity that the bigger products portray. The S3 is especially forceful with a 15mm lower stance than the A3 sedan. The air intakes are bigger with more detail; the side mirrors are highlighted with brushed aluminum; and the rear of the car looks more masculine thanks to chunky exhaust tips. The

A dashboard symbol that saves lives

A tire’s number one enemy isn’t road hazards; it’s under-inflation. Most drivers know low tire pressure can lead to skidding, hydroplaning and blow outs, even losing control of a vehicle. Yet most people aren’t aware of a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in their vehicle and they don’t recognize the low tire pressure light that could save their life. According to Transport Canada, a recent study indicated that about 50% of the vehicles on the road in Canada have at least one tire that is either over or under-inflated by more than 10%. In fact, 10% of all vehicles surveyed had at least one tire underinflated by 20%. This represents a real safety issue.
