Remembrance Day Local legion members honour Nov. 11
Royal Canadian Legion branches across the country are busy preparing for Remembrance Day and raising funds through poppy sales to support their local community. In Mission, the Nov. 11 ceremonies begin with a parade at 10:15 a.m. from Ecole Des Deux-Rives (near the corner of Seventh Avenue and Stave Lake Street) to the Clarke Theatre on Prentis Avenue. Everyone is invited to take part in the official ceremonies at 10:40 a.m. inside the theatre. Wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph outside the local legion on Logan Avenue following the ceremony. Remembrance Day has a special place in many Canadians’ hearts, and it’s a day Branch 57 legion members Ethel Beckingham and Albert (Knobby) Clark will never forget. Clark was just 16 years old when he volunteered to join the paratroopers in Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57, Albert (Knobby) Clark and Ethel Beckingham, remember 1943. Knobby, as he is
fondly known as, was considered too small to be in the group, but that didn’t stop him. In fact, he wanted to join so much, he had two teeth pulled just before his dental exam. A paratrooper couldn’t have any fillings because the change in atmospheric pressure could cause them to burst, he explained. Once Clark completed his basic paratrooper training, he was immediately posted oversees to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, serving in England and northwest Europe. Clark’s battalion served in arguably four of the most famous battle areas of WWII: Normandy, Ardennes, Rhine and Elbe. Clark does not speak much about Normandy, offering simply that “it was very loud.” The battalion members were the first ones that parachuted into Normandy on D Day, June 6, 1944, shortly after midnight and fought continuously until the
the sacrifices made, especially by comrades, on Remembrance Day.
Honouring day for the Older Person The luncheon held on Oct. 1 for the International Day of the Older Person at Mission Seniors Activity Centre was a success. The house was full and everyone enjoyed chili, coleslaw, buns and dessert. The line dancers demonstrated their skills and Mission Fest Singers serenaded the audience. There was also a singalong. The event was an opportunity for old friends to connect again and form new alliances. The group is now planning a luncheon in December at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre to celebrate Christmas with all members and friends. For more information about the group, call 604814-2188. Mission Seniors Living 55 Plus is dedicated to our seniors, whom we hope to motivate to keep active. We welcome story submissions and photos. Submissions can be e-mailed to Gordon Dainard at gdainard333@gmail.com. For advertising opportunities call Crystal at 604-851-4444.
