On Thursday, October 24, the staff and students at Marysville Elementary School thoroughly enjoyed a “Take Me Outside” activity day. Students travelled through a series of eight stations across the school grounds, participating in various outdoor activities. Activities included fort building, water artistry, digging in the garden and snacking on dried apples (prepared by the Kindergarten classes!). Despite the damp, chilly weather, the kids spent the morning laughing and playing happily outside with their peers. This morning of outdoor activity was their response to the national Take Me Outside challenge, an initiative to get children outside and connected with nature. For more information on the challenge, visit http://takemeoutside.ca/ See more from Take Me Outside later this week in the Bulletin.
POLICE REPORT
Drug Dealer busted in Marysville
Variety of drugs found in Marysville home CPL. CHRIS NE WEL For the Bulletin.
On the evening of Oct 24, members of the Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP executed a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act in Marys-
ville. Several types of drugs were located including, MDMA, marihuana, hash and Ketamine. A male (37) and female were arrested. The male has since been charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. On Friday, October, 25 he appeared before a Judicial Justice of the Peace and has been remanded in custody until Monday Oct 28. The subject is known to police and has a
fairly extensive criminal record, he was arrested two years ago for the same offence. Police were particularly concerned for two reasons. One, children often reside in the residence and secondly, the presence of Ketamine. If used improperly or mixed with other substances Ketamine can be very dangerous. Veterinarians primarily use it as a general anesthesia usually with a sedative for large animals. See Page 3
As Kathy Cooper officially takes the reins as CEO of Kootenay Rockies Tourism — a position she has been in unofficially since the retirement of Chris Dadson last fall — the tourism industry in this area still faces challenges. Tourism took a hit with the economic collapse of 2008, and Cooper says that while there are positive areas, the industry as a whole has not yet fully recovered. “We haven’t made any gains since 2008,” Cooper said. “It’s been a slow climb back up to those levels and we are not there yet.” It is a changing world and one of Cooper’s goals is to make sure Kootenay Rockies Tourism stays abreast of current trends and provides the best opportunities for all its stakeholders to increase revenues. “One of the challeng-
Kathy Cooper is the new CEO of Kootenay Rockies Tourism. es in the tourism industry is that it has become seriously competitive,” Cooper said. “We compete with other jurisdictions with bigger marketing budgets. It’s global now. The tourism world has shrunk. We don’t just compete with Alberta. We’re competing with Australia, Germany, Asia. Tourism dollars are shrinking and everyone wants a piece of the pie.” The high Canadian dollar hasn’t helped in recent years as visitors to Canada may hold off waiting for a more advantageous exchange rate.
