City crew takes down bandshell

The bandshell in Greenwood’s City Park was taken down last week. City works crew used a backhoe to demolish the structure. According to Doreen McLean of the Greenwood Museum, the bandshell was built with a $10,000 grant that Board of Trade president-ofthe-day Merlyn Phelps was instrumental in acquiring. “I think it was controversial because of the cost but it served its purpose well over the years,” said McLean. When the building came under the scrutiny of the building inspector, Mayor Arno Hennig took exception to any claim that it might be structurally unsound. He took a fiddle up to the roof and danced a jig for a picture that appeared in the local paper. Former city works foreman Ken Riddle said the bandshell was built in the late 1970s and Jim Vineyard was the foreman for the crew that built it. It had not been used for the past several years. In March Greenwood council voted to demolish the bandshell, the Lions Park gazebo and the ice rink boards. The first two jobs on the list have been completed.

Over the past several years various Greenwood councils have been wrestling with the dilemma whether to raze or to repair the band shell in City Park. The question was resolved last week as the works crew took the building down.
Workshop ‘for women only’ Submitted
The newest statistics about the occurrence of sexual assault suggest that one out of every two women will face this through the course of their lives. The Boundary Martial Arts Club, in collaboration with the RCMP, will be presenting a free theoretical workshop on danger awareness and avoidance. This will be followed by a demonstration of basic selfdefense techniques. This workshop will be presented by Tae Kwon Do instructors Bo Macfarlane, Vlodko Barchuk and members of the martial arts club. Constable Renee Thomson of the Grand Forks detachment of the RCMP has generously volunteered her time to present the theoretical part of the program.
This workshop is available to all women of all ages but the decision to attend this program with your daughters should be preceded by parental decision and conversations with them about these issues and their readiness to attend this workshop. Specific assault possibilities will not be addressed but this presentation should not be the first exposure to having a conversation about possible sexual assault. The workshop will be held at West Boundary Elementary School in Rock Creek on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. Please dress in loose comfortable clothing if participating. For additional information, contact Vlodko Barchuk at 250-449-8404.
