Susi Vander Wyk earns $100,000 for her charity Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Support from Chilliwack was crucial. Chilliwack mom Susi Vander Wyk was just named winner of Walmart Canada’s 2013 Mom of the Year over the weekend. Her charity of choice, Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Canada, is set to receive the prize money of $100,000. A mom of three, Susi Vander Wyk told The Progress she was “shocked and humbled” at first by the contest nomination last spring by her niece. She became one of 20 semi finalists vying for the honour, attracting vigorous online voting, and then in early August she found out she’d made the cut as one of eight finalists for Mom of the Year. “I’m just so happy for the organization and just so thrilled at the potential of receiving $100,000 for charity,” she told Progress readers when she became a finalist over the summer. The prize money will now go to helping SMA Canada families and the scientific side of things. Related rezoning and OCP bylaws received introduction and first reading at the last council meeting. The CD zone for River’s Edge would give the project a flexible framework for development, “that reinforces the surrounding neighbourhood density and permits further intensification,” according to the staff report. The neighbourhood plan makes it clear that CLC is striving to make River’s Edge its “greenest development to date,” with a 1.4-hectare “Tree Park” dedicated to open green space and “Green Streets” for walking or cycling. Energy efficiency is going to be built in. The plan
Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It’s prime riverfront property that could be transformed into the next master planned neighbourhood in Chilliwack. River’s Edge is a residential development on the Vedder River near the southernmost edge of Chilliwack, proposed by Canada Lands Company and its consulting team. A rezoning hearing is set for Oct. 15, to change the OCP designation from federal, and Vedder River Management Area, to a Comprehensive Development (CD) Area, and to rezone from RSV3 to a CD-24 zone. The plan could see up to a maximum of 350 residential units on the 42-acre site, and the goal is to create a vibrant, complete and walkable community. The housing mix would include everything
