Bridge to replace Massey Tunnel A new bridge will replace the aging George Massey Tunnel but the provincial government isn’t yet saying if the span will be tolled. Premier Christy Clark promised construction will begin in 2017 in her speech last Friday at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention. Clark said it’s too early to say how improved transit along Highway 99 might fit into the project or whether tolls will be required to pay for it. ❙ See story, a3

Receiver Jack McDonald proved to be a jack of all trades Saturday as he registered a rare football hat trick in the South Delta Sun Devils 42-12 win over the Frank Hurt Hornets to open the Southern AA Conference season on Saturday. McDonald caught a touchdown, rushed for a touchdown, and even threw for a touchdown.

Fraser Health is set to move all staff from the South Delta Public Health Unit into North Delta, according to an amalgamation draft document obtained by the South Delta Leader. The move is expected to change the staffing down to 13 public health nurses from the current 19, resulting in six layoffs of part-time public health nurses, while one full-time nurse will be hired. The layoffs were confirmed by Debra McPherson, president of the B.C. Nurses’ Union.

High above the Bollywood Banquet Hall at 8166 128 St. in Surrey, childhood cancer survivor Simran Sarai helped Delta Police Const. Ken Usipiuk kick off the annual Cops for Cancer Tour De Valley fundraising campaign on Friday. Each fall, more than 100 law enforcement and emergency services personnel from across B.C. commit hundreds of hours of their own time to cycle thousands of kilometers across the province. Schools, organizations, businesses and individuals in more than 60 B.C. communities show their support by organizing fundraising events and activities and pledging to raise thousands of dollars. Simran was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when she was six years old. Now 13, she has been five years free of the disease and spent Friday afternoon helping Usipiuk raise awareness for this year’s Cops for Cancer campaign. Usipiuk spent the weekend camped out 15 metres above the mall on a scissor lift to draw attention to the upcoming fundraising cycling tour. Surrey and Delta riders take part in the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley, which sees them cycle 900 kilometers over nine days from Tsawwassen to Boston Bar. Over the years, Tour de Valley has raised more than $4 million. This year’s ride gets under way Sept. 26 and goes until Oct. 4. Cops for Cancer aims to show families who have a child with cancer that they do not have to face their journey alone. ❙ Continued on B4
