Area MLAs eye the NDP leadership Victoria representatives weigh in on Adrian Dix resignation Kyle Wells News staff
Juan de Fuca MLA John Horgan and Victoria-Swan Lake MLA Rob Fleming are among a handful of New Democrat MLAs considering a run at the NDP leadership. Last week NDP Leader Adrian Dix announced he will step down as party leader. A new leader is expected to take the reins of the party by mid 2014. The move follows the party’s disappointing result in last spring’s provincial election. Horgan, who ran for the party leadership in 2011 and placed third, said he is considering running again, but hasn’t made John Horgan any decisions yet. “I have to focus on what the needs of my constituents are, the people in my communities,” Horgan said, “Can I best do that as leader of the opposition or just as a critic for a particular ministry? ... I have to weigh that.” Horgan has known Dix for 25 years and said he has nothing but the “utmost respect” for him and the work he did with the party. Dix staying on until a leader can be chosen is a positive, Horgan said, at which point the party needs to work on tapping into core values in the province. Robin Morton attempted to convert the yard of his Colwood home into a natural ecosystem, including a meadow in place of a lawn, until complaints spurred the city to order Morton to mow it.
Colwood demands lawn be tended Kyle Wells News staff
In a case of one man’s natural landscaping being another’s unkept eyesore, Colwood council ordered a resident to mow down his attempt at restoring a natural ecosystem.
Moving from Vancouver, Robin Morton bought his property in the Esquimalt Lagoon area under the belief he would be able to use natural landscaping to restore the lot to a natural ecosystem, a spirit of environmentalism he believes is supported by the city’s Official Community Plan.
“It’s not a lawn to me, it’s a piece of the planet,” Morton said. “My landscaping plan was to allow this to revert to a natural setting.” PLEASE SEE: Residents see issue, Page A10
