Recyclers charged under scrap metal bylaw by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
Two scrap metal dealers have run afoul of the District of Maple Ridge’s scrap metal bylaw. Still before the courts is M. Salo and Sons Recycling Ltd., located in the Albion industrial park. Owner Michael Salo is facing two counts under the bylaw for failing to register metal that was on site. Liz Holitzki, director of licences, permits and bylaws, said the recycler was caught in a routine police check, and is accused of having metal wire on site which did not match the business records. Salo faces a fine ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The charges have not yet been proven in court. Mike Salo has twice been given adjournments in order to allow his lawyer time to review his case. see Metal, p14

The Golden Eagle Group has installed another pipe along the Alouette River, but without full approval.
An Aquilini farm company still hasn’t paid a fine due in January for Water Act infractions. What’s more, the parent company, Golden Eagle Group, was recently cited for another infraction related to using the North Alouette River to irrigate berry crops.

A numbered company owned by the Aquilini Investment Group – the same family that owns the Vancouver Canucks NHL franchise and Rogers Arena – was fined $55,000 for a Water Act violation committed in 2009, when it used river water to save droughtstricken crops in a field west of 216th Street. The company pumped four to five million litres of water from the North Alouette River onto the crops, before it had received final government approval. The company later received a wa-

ter licence for the same property. Of the fine, $1,000 was a traditional fine and $54,000 was to be paid to an environmental fund known as the Heritage Conservation Trust Foundation. The local conservation group ARMS, the Alouette River Management Society, inquired about the funds. The group wanted to apply for money to put toward a local project, such as salmonid habitat enhancement on the North Alouette River system. ARMS executive director Greta Borick-Cunningham was sur-
prised to learn that the fine has not yet been paid. “It’s been eight months now.” When the Heritage Conservation Trust received ARMS’ request, executive director Brian Springinotic made enquiries as to the availability of the $54,000 from the Aquilini group, and found the funds have not been received. He has since made contact with the Ministry of the Attorney General to determine how to proceed. His agency was once an arm of government. see Fine, p11
