Hanging up his hat Colwood fire Chief Russ Cameron is getting ready to hang up his helmet after providing more than 35 years of service and nearly 25 years as chief. His last day of work will be Sept. 30. See story page A17.

New federal ridings for B.C. have been finalized, with the new borders lumping in Langford and Highlands with the Cowichan Valley. The new Cowichan-Malahat-Langford riding, which roughly includes North Cowichan, Lake Cowichan and areas south of that, will be introduced for the 2015 federal election. The riding also includes areas of the Greater Victoria, including Highlands, Langford and areas northerly of Sooke and Metchosin The rest of the West Shore, including View Royal, Colwood and Metchosin, will be a part of the newly named Saanich-EsquimaltJuan de Fuca riding. “We made our input about what we would like to see happen and they made their decisions, so we’ll work with what’s there now,” said Randall Garrison, MP for EsquimaltGarrison, MP Randall Juan de Fuca. The riding lines have been tweaked since the initial proposal, which divided some municipalities such as Colwood and Langford. The final ridings do follow municipal boundary lines. “I don’t think I have major concerns. They had to make tough decisions about how to get a new seat onto the Island and they’ve done what they think is best,” Garrison said. “Apart from Langford and the Highlands leaving, it’s not a lot of change.” Current Nanaimo-Cowichan NDP MP Jean Crowder said with the new boundaries she’s unsure of which riding she will run in. “We did make some presentations to the riding boundary commission, particularly in the initial proposal,” Crowder said. “The (commission) has a tough job to do because they’re trying to balance the numbers and the communities of interest.” - with files from Peter Rusland kwells@goldstreamgazette.com
