50-year-old Victoria man died en route to hospital after he collapsed in Cowichan Lake near Heather Campground Monday morning.

An RCMP press release states police and BC Ambulance Services responded to the distress call at 3 a.m. near the boat launch at the campsite.

“The male was seen to be swimming then collapsed in shallow water,” the press release states. “He was brought to shore where witnesses performed CPR until paramedics

The man was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

The cause of death was not available at press time. Police say that foul play is not suspected.

The victim’s name is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

One of their own is dead after what appears to be a hiking accident Thursday in Ladysmith.

The body of 16-year-old Kaitlin Heidelbach was discovered Friday near the Holland Creek Trails, a popular community walking spot.

Indications are she tumbled down a steep embankment while out for a walk.

The loss hit her family, her school and her community hard.

“Kaitlin excelled at everything whether it was games, sports or school — she wanted to be the best at everything she did,” her obituary Kaitlin Heidelbach: natural leader reads. “She was starting the new school year in Grade 11 as house captain and sports captain. Highly motivated, energetic, driven, a natural leader and independent she was destined to succeed. She had big hopes and dreams.”

Heidelbach volunteered at Cowichan District Hospital and St. John Ambulance in Duncan, went on a service trip to Nicaragua at age 14 and had another planned to Africa this year.

“Ever since Kaitlin was five years old, she said she wanted to be a doctor and never once wavered from this goal,” the obituary reads. “Her plans were that after she completed medical school she wanted to spend the first two years of her career working with Doctors Without Borders.”

Search-and-rescue crews, including those from Cowichan and Nanaimo, plus an RCMP helicopter, were involved in the search that ended 9:30 a.m.

“Heidelbach texted her father, Neil, at 6:30 p.m.

Aug. 29 telling him she was going for a walk and she’d be home in two hours,” a police release stated.

Neil Heidelbach described Kaitlin as being “fairly familiar” with the Holland Creek Trail system, and “very much an outdoorsy person” who likes to explore.

RCMP Victim Services are available to anyone impacted by the tragedy.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled at QMS on Friday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m.

School trustee vote postponed until 2014 Cowichan’s nine school-board trustees won’t be elected this November, the education minister revealed last week.

Instead, our new school board will be elected during B.C.’s 2014 civic vote, the minister said.

Peter Fassbender has flipped an earlier ruling by his predecessor, Don McRae, about staging

a fall byelection of valley school-board trustees.

The board was fired last year for submitting a promised, illegal budget.

School District 79’s board was replaced by provincially appointed trustee Mike McKay, who’s Cowichan Secondary School’s former principal and Surrey’s current superintendent.

Fassbender told the Times Colonist his byelection nixing will save taxpayers about $100,000.

McKay has overseen a major restructuring of Cowichan schools, closing some facilities and transforming the mandate of many others.

Duncan pilot is counting his blessings after his Volmer VJ-22 Sportsman seaplane flipped while launching Sunday afternoon on Cowichan Lake.

Pilot John Howroyd and his passenger daughter suffered nothing more than minor injuries when the custom-built amphibian aircraft caught a wave when attempting to take off and flipped over at about 1:30 p.m.

“We were just departing and went

through a boat wake. That was enough to trip the plane up and we ended upside-down in the lake,” Howroyd told News Leader Pictorial photographer Malcolm Chalmers at the scene.

“We were almost off the water, so close, probably another second or two and we would have been in the air and this wouldn’t have happened.”

The amount of boaters on the lake on the long-weekend Sunday was both fortunate and unfortunate for the pilot.

Police confirmed one of the aircraft’s wheels caught a boat wake, causing the plane to overturn.

On the other side of the coin, there were many witnesses and folks ready to assist with the rescue in a matter of seconds.

He received little more than a black eye and a small cut on his cheek. His daughter only received a cut on her arm.

“The owner — an experienced pilot — a 68-year-old (Howroyd), freed himself right away,” stated Lake Cowichan RCMP Cpl. Warren Potter in a press release.

“Fortunately a retired Vancouver PD member was in the area was able to free the (44-year-old) North Saanich (passenger) who had been upside down but had a little air left in the cockpit.”

The plane received minimal damage and was towed to the beach by local boaters.

“I don’t mind the airplane, we can always rebuild it again,” Howroyd told Chalmers. “It looks bad but it’s not that bad. It’ll fly again.”

Social media reports have been spreading like wildfire about an Asian male trying to grab the girl from her grandmother’s home south of Duncan.

But in the absence of corroborating evidence, North Cowichan /Duncan RCMP do not want to create unnecessary concern.

“There hasn’t been a criminal offense that’s occured and we just don’t have the facts. We’re relying on the words of a three-year-old child,” said North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday Tuesday of an incident reported to police Aug. 25. “If there was a predator out there and we could back that up with facts and a criminal offense, you’d be the first person we’d be notifying.”

Cowichan’s Erica Melissa Joe is the mother of the three-yearold who was “grabbed” by the alleged culprit. She posted about the incident on Facebook.

“Neighbours said they have seen him for the past few weeks biking around on the reserve of Cowichan Tribes (Wil’seem Road area),” said Joe in an email to the News Leader Pictorial.

“He literally pulled my threeyear-old out of the bay window last Sunday. Cops were called but couldn’t locate the man.”

Joe wasn’t there at the time.

Her mother was watching her

daughter, but was in another room of the house when she heard yelling. Joe’s younger brother went outside and found an older Asian male in his late 40s or early 50s, who seemed to be confused when asked what he was doing on the property.

Joe also said her daughter again saw the same man standing by the window at her parent’s place, Aug. 31. When Joe went to check, the man wasn’t there, but she was later notified by neighbours he had been spotted in the area again.

“I never saw him but my three-year-old said ‘Mommy that man is back’ and cops were called again and they had cop cars looking all up and down the road and surrounding areas,” Joe said. “Someone commented on my Facebook status and said they had seen a guy biking down Boys Road by the fish hatchery area but cops couldn’t find him.

“I haven’t been able to sleep since,” she said, noting she was hoping to warn other parents on Facebook to be mindful.

Hobday confirmed police are still searching for the man described by the Joe family.

“We still definitely want to identify this man and his intentions and his connections to that neighbourhood,” she said. “For all we know, he could be just collecting bottles or just riding his bike.”

“This seems to have become more of a knee-jerk Facebook reaction,” she said, noting police would be more inclined to issue a public safety press release, if it was more clear a criminal act had occurred.

Bow shooter sentence put off Don Bodger

he preparation of a Gladue report is considered an important component before sentencing can proceed on Marvin Antoniuk Jr. on an aggravated assault charge in the arrow shooting of his father Marvin Sr. As a result, sentencing was delayed at the 11th hour Tuesday morning in Duncan Provincial Court until a report can be done. A Gladue report is a type of pre-sentence report that takes into account Aboriginal backgrounds in sentencing.

Court proceedings revealed Antoniuk’s mother has Aboriginal heritage and is a residential school survivor.

The funding issue for such a report came into question. A Gladue report is normally compiled through Legal Services but a Gladue component can be done by the Corrections department. “I apologize for this delay,’’ defence lawyer Jeff Arndt told Judge Susan Wishart. “This issue, I think, is important enough. The issue of funding should be resolved to allow the report

to be prepared.’’ Arndt said Antoniuk would remain in custody while the report is being prepared.

The Gladue report requires the court to take circumstances facing Aborginal peoples into account. It is a guiding principle and, in Antoniuk’s case, the mixed family situation with his father and mother needed to be detailed further, Arndt indicated. “I do believe it is relevant and highly-assistive to the court in passing sentence,’’ he said.

Brad Tomlin, representing the Crown, had no objection. “The component, I would suspect, could be completed within 30 to 45 days,’’ he said.

Crown indicated it is seeking a prison term in the range of five years less time spent.

Antoniuk will appear by video next Tuesday when a new sentencing date will be set.

Antoniuk was originally charged with attempted murder after the incident Jan. 27 that led to the shooting of his father, but Crown elected to proceed on the aggravated assault charge.

Pompeo sentence delayed again The posturing is continuing in the aggravated assault case of Const. David Pompeo.

by Ravi Hira, has now been set aside and the sentencing is due to proceed.

The Crown, represented ďŹ rst by Todd Patola and now Carmen Rogers, and the defence have been exchanging potential sentencing recommendations back and forth following Pompeo’s conviction for shooting Bill Gillespie in 2009 near Chemainus.

The defence alleged the Crown’s decision to change its mind and ask for a longer sentence was unconstitutional.

Pompeo’s case resumes in Duncan Provincial Court next Tuesday, Sept. 10 when a new date will be set for sentencing. The defence’s appeal of the conviction is also due to be heard soon, Sept. 17 and 18 in Vancouver.

“We want to get the work finished before Sept. 15, the closing of the in-stream activity window,” Crandall said.

The feds’ funds twinned his society’s $25,000 from Shell, $5,000 from TD Bank, and $5,000 from RBC’s Blue Water Fund.

Dam maintenance will also see trail maintenance “so people can see the spawning.”

He saw Ottawa’s program as money well spent. “You can’t turn your back on a strong, producing salmon stream. This makes sure fish have habitat.”

T

he intial newsroom reaction to news local high school students were going to get to sleep in this year was about what you’d expect from a group of cynical scribes.

“Lazy, coddled, #$%! teenagers! That’s all they need — another notch on their belts of entitlement.”

But once we got that out of our systems and actually took a look at the facts, the reaction morphed into a grudging “good call.”

There are a lot of things that are done a certain way, just because they Not everyhave always been done that way.

And just because we had to walk thing has to eight miles through blinding snowbe done the storms uphill both ways to get to school (did we mention the wolves old way nipping at our heels?) does not mean our kids need to.

We’re all for the life lessons of hard work and persistence being taught at the School of Hard Knocks. But what we like even more is good old basic learning.

And the learned have determined that the teenage brain is not wired to do much learning first thing in the morning. So why not let them get started a little later, when there is a better chance they will retain what they are taught?

It’s not like the principle of efficiency isn’t what’s followed in the real world.

Janitors work afternoon shift because that’s when the buildings are empty. Fallers are up before dawn to take advantage of daylight. Programmers sleep in because they are often working well into the night. Heck, even crusty old reporters tend to often set their own hours, simply because the news never stops.

Do what works is the mantra in a healthy workplace.

It should be the same in our schools.

M

y husband and I lived in the valley for two years before we looked up from nesting with babies to notice the Cowichan Exhibition.

We had our first glimpse into the size of it when Alison Irwin, a neighbour who has participated in the exhibition for more than 50 years, delivered to us the 32-page catalogue listing too many exhibition event classes to count.

We shared the catalogue with friends who, like us, had yet to experience the wonder that is the valley’s largest fair. We laughed together at some of the hokey-yet-charming classes, like the ducttape competition, or Home Tweet Home, a decorated article for the home using birds (not living) as a theme.

The Cake, Made By A Man class was the crowd favourite. The gents brainstormed a

few ideas: a steak cake, a carburetor cake, and a phallic-shaped cake, thus reminding us why they are in a class of their own.

We felt it was our community duty to enter a few classes. When we told others we were participating in the country fair, we smirked as though we were too cool for such oldfashioned gaiety.

I entered the Cookies, Chocolate Chip class. When I became a parent, I decided the chocolate-chip cookie was an important maternal tool to lure neighbourhood children into my home. I believed a good cookie is like a welcoming hug and would establish me as a mom kids can trust.

My friend Shevaun shared with me her Auntie Joanie’s notoriously good cookie recipe. I then spent Malcolm Gladwell’s prescribed 10,000 hours — or in this case I baked 10,000 cookies — to commit it to memory.

The children loved them, and the Cowichan Exhibition offered me a chance to see if my cookies were best over all.

If there was any light in the dark news cycle of the past week or two, it was Sunday’s plane crash in Cowichan Lake.

When you hear plane crash, the immediate reaction is to fear the worse.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case for a father and daughter whose small private plane flipped into the drink.

Considering what’s been the norm lately, we’ll take minor bumps and bruises any time.

COWICHAN LEADERS

I realized how important winning was to me when I was nervous on competition day. I thought, unreasonably, winning might prove I was a good mother when it felt like I was failing daily in that capacity.

I may not be able to organize a closet or remember to notice how amazing my kids are, but making the best chocolate-chip cookies might show I wasn’t completely unfit for the job.

When I walked into the huge Mellor Hall to drop off my six freshly baked and carefully selected cookies, the place was packed full with people placing on the rows of tables their flowers, honey, vegetables—among the other countless passion projects.

The collective energy to research, prepare, practice, and produce all those exhibition entries blew my mind. This was anything but hokey. I was humbled by the awesome display of what makes the Cowichan Valley so rich.

To win a first-place blue ribbon in that hall is something to be proud of, which, if you

spend five minutes with me, you’ll know I am.

I won that year, and when I entered and won the next year it had nothing to do with proving my maternal abilities and everything to do with retaining my title in a field of exceptional talent.

I’m going for the three-peat this year and will retire, like basketball star Michael Jordan, at the height of my game. I’m already thinking about which classes to enter next year because what we thought was an outdated custom—the country fair — is now the event our family looks forward to most every year.

Cost of soil treatment decision is huge and hard to measure

Dear editor One tends to think the cost for fighting the water contamination issue at Shawnigan Lake will equal the legal bill in this dispute, and that the cost will be borne by Shawnigan residents. The hidden costs however, are borne by all. Many people have taken much time to attend meetings, plan, research law and science, and attend and work at fundraisers. These are all hours that could have been better spent at their businesses, or family priorities, or other community activities.

The publicity surrounding the assured pollution of the lake has had a measurable negative effect on property values in a way that will eventually cost this province millions in lost taxes and real estate. Government staff time is all cost and time that could be much more productive. I know of people who are so stressed from this issue that they are visiting doctors and going on medication. This is a cost to our medical system.

An update to the 100-year-old provincial water act would likely not allow industrial poisoning of Shawnigan Lake drinking water but, because of the present lack of adequate rules, the Shawnigan scenario is being played out all over the province. If, instead of hiding behind process, the government had half the strength of character it told us it possessed during the last election, it would take a stand to stop this and other detrimental projects from happening.

In the meantime, expect to continue paying the costs of government inaction.

Pullers Canada: High-level First Nations paddle training institute opening on the shores of Lake Cowichan

here hasn’t been a First Nations Olympian in a paddle sport since Alwyn Morris, a member of the Mohawk Nation, won gold in the K2 1000-metre kayak race in 1984. But change may be on the horizon.

On Sept. 4, Jason Anson, a sport technologist, along with Sandy Willmott, a professor at the University of Lincoln, will open an exclusively First Nation paddle club with its own training centre, on the shores of Cowichan Lake.

Called Pullers Canada, Anson says the facility “will use cuttingedge technology to support the pullers in all aspects of their development and connect them with sport scientists and coaches through the University of Lincoln in the UK.” However, the training centre also has another purpose: to give marginalized First Nations youth access to participation in paddle sports in a culturally relevant way by not only bridging that gap, but by creating new, one of a kind, online sports sciences education resource materials.

Faced with poverty, poor nutrition, and lack of access to funds that would provide the infrastructure needed for training and equipment, these youth are living with the aftereffects of the residential school system. Anson says the Aboriginal Paddling Initiative currently utilized by CanoeKayak Canada does not adequately address these cultural differences and the needs faced by many First Nations youth.

“Pullers Canada is aiming to provide the emotional support, insight and understanding that will allow these youth to overcome

many of the barriers they presently face,” says Anson. “It is with this support and guidance we hope many of these youth will be able to step forward, with pride and confidence, onto the world stage of sport.”

A short-term goal of the centre is to bring a team of First Nations youth, picked from tribes across Vancouver Island, to the North American Indigenous Games in 2014. A long-term goal is to eventually see a First Nations puller once again participate at the Olympics.

To do this, Anson and Willmott are developing what they are calling their First Nations Cultural Athletic Development Plan.

Anson says First Nations pullers have many questions when trying to enter the sport, questions which are not addressed by the CS4L Long-Term Athlete Development model adopted by CanoeKayak Canada and B.C. “Simply applying the policies and procedures used for mainstream, or white, Canadian athletes to the First Nations case will not, and has not, worked,” says Anson. “Potential pullers struggle to learn about the necessary selection processes and the associated events, let alone meet the requirements of participation in those processes.”

Last year, Anson helped brothers Robin Mack Jr., and Kyle Mack from Nitinat, along with Cory Campbell and Alex Campbell from Duncan become Aboriginal paddling champions for the 2012 season. Brandon Edgar won four titles in the U19 category.

owichan Valley Regional District residents will be voting in a new federal riding during the Oct. 19, 2015 election.

Most will be in the new Cowichan-Malahat-Langford riding, which roughly includes North Cowichan, Lake Cowichan and all parts south, according to Elections Canada maps.

Ladysmith, North Oyster and most of Saltair are part of the new Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding.

The two new ridings were born after the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission finished work on redistributing Canada’s

electoral districts. The final report has been handed to the Chief Electoral Officer and B.C.’s six new ridings are set to be proclaimed into law this month.

The changes mark the end of the current Nanaimo-Cowichan riding. Nanaimo-Cowichan NDP MP Jean Crowder will see her current riding split; half going to NanaimoLadysmith, the other half to CML. Crowder told the News Leader Pictorial Friday she hadn’t decided which riding she’ll run in.

“We did make some presentations to the riding boundary commission, particularly in the initial proposal,” she said.

Nanaimo councillor is pushing a cross-Island E&N trail and he wants the CVRD to get on board.

George Anderson wants to lead local governments and the Island Corridor Foundation into a potential Islandwide E&N trail. He says his plan could help steer tourists into the cycling tourism market.

Municipalities have talked about a major trail network for years, but until now communities have focused resources on building their own pathways.

There has been no co-ordinated effort to link communities, despite potential benefits around safety, recreation and tourism, Anderson said.

According to tourism experts, cycling tourism is becoming big business. The Capital Region’s Galloping Goose and

Lochside Trails, for example, are an inter-city connector that allows people to travel from Swartz Bay to Sidney and Victoria.

“I know a ton of people constantly ride back and forth to Victoria … and you are fighting traffic and almost getting run over,” Brady said. “The thought of the E&N being cyclefriendly … or a hiking route where people can (catch) the ferry to Victoria … ride up through Lake Cowichan and Duncan to Nanaimo. It would be world class.”

Brady and others interested in an Island link say one of the biggest questions in a project of this scope would be funding. A single kilometre of E&N trail can cost between $200,000 and $500,000, according to the City of Nanaimo.

he Cowichan Valley Regional District’s transit system has passed its final frontier.

Free fares throughout the valley yesterday marked the arrival of service for Ladysmith and surrounding area.

B.C. Transit marked the 20th anniversary of Cowichan bus service with four new routes and its Chemainus connector.

Ladysmith residents can expect transit service — provided by shortbodied Arboc buses — on four local routes with additional service to Chemainus four times each weekday and twice per day on weekends.

Routes provide service from a transit hub at First Avenue and Symonds Street to Malone Road and Colonia Drive (Route 31), to Forrest Field (Route 32), to Transfer Beach and Oyster Bay Drive (Route 33) and to Coronation Mall (Routes 34A and 34B) and Davis Road (Route 34B). Route 35, meanwhile, provides service from Ladysmith to Chemainus, where commuters can transfer to Route 6 for service to Duncan and Mill Bay. Schedules vary from route to route and can be found in the CVRTS Rider’s Guide.

Regular cash fares of $2 for adults and $1.75 for students and seniors take effect today, while children aged four or younger ride free, according to the CVRTS Rider’s Guide.

Tickets, sold in packs of 10, cost $16 for adults and $13.50 for students and seniors.

Day and monthly passes will be available for sale online, and will be shipped to customers

by Canada Post.

“Cowichan will be one of the first ever BC Transit systems to do ecommerce, which will be super exciting,” Transit spokesperson Meribeth Burton said. “So people can purchase their products online and have them mailed to them.”

It didn’t really matter during Thursday’s singalong show in the Crofton Pub where The Gords delighted fans with prime picking and lovely harmonies.

Many of the night’s numbers by guitarists Gord Matthews and Gord Lee Worden, plus bassist Gord Maxwell, were pulled from their debut disc Pick.

It’s appropriately named for the veteran songwriters who continue playing with Canadian country legend Ian Tyson.

The Gords’ brand of polish with Tyson, and other shiny stars, sparkled during their Crofton debut with drummer Chris Aiken.

But the Gords seemed in their element playing songs of their own, including Maxwell’s (ex-One Horse Blue band member) exquisite Baby Don’t Cry, and Hopeless Love.

Matthews (formerly of k.d. lang’s band) lent us an incendiary version of his tune Time To

Cry, complemented by a Telecaster workout with Worden (Nick Gilder, Barney Bentall), and terrific tearjerker When Dreams Collide.

The modest quartet even performed Worden’s wonderful Feel At Home twice, including an encore.

Bourbon drenched blues, This is the Shoes Their music is described as the kind of blues that brings to mind corrugated tin juke joints and backyard bourbon stills.

This is the Shoes is a two-piece Vancouver band set to play Duncan Friday on a tour that will take them across the country.

“So you’re thinking The White Stripes, The

Black Keys, Japandroids or The Kills, right?” their PR material states. “This is the Shoes would rather you think about the origins of rock and roll.”

The pair will be performing music from their EP Bust, just released yesterday.

“Abandoning worldly possessions and throwing caution out the van door, This is the Shoes,

alongside Vancouver-based musician Corey Abell, will spend three months travelling through rain, sleet and whatever else this country can throw at them.”

The band plays at Duncan Garage Showroom on Friday, Sept. 6 with Ruskin. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Call 250-748-7246.

pen minds, full stomachs and glasses of Google research are among Terry Tips for a terrific time at the Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival.

Terry David Mulligan, a prominent Vancouver TV and radio show host and author, pours years of viticultural smarts into his popular Tasting Room radio show — and Hollywood & Vines TV show shared with fellow actor and corkhead Jason Priestley.

Mulligan joins Troy Townsin of CBC’s Time For Wine, and sommelier-author Treve Ring during a lively panel discussion at Rocky Creek Winery Sept. 14.

Mulligan can’t wait.

“I’ve been bored out of my mind with various panels, but I intend this hour will be as entertaining as possible,” he told the News Leader Pictorial, while sipping pinot noir from Cowichan’s Unsworth Winery.

It and Rocky Creek are just two of a dozen valley wineries — plus various bistros — tapping barrels and starting ovens for the Sept. 7 to 15 cork-and-fork festival launched by Saturday’s team-theme Grape Stomp! at Cowichan Exhibition grounds.

Cowichan’s festival is new to Mulligan — an actor, DJ and former host of Good Rockin’ Tonight — who has visited the Warm Land, but not as a globetrotting wine critic.

“I truly have no expectations of the Cowichan Valley. I’m going over to learn, and find out more about the area.

“It’s time for me to get caught up with everyone in Cowichan,” he said of vino reporting planned for The Tasting Room and beyond.

“Not everyone will get a rave review — I’ll talk about the wines that interest me; they all

Mulligan also encouraged festival goers to plan routes to maximize tasting time.

“You can’t do everything, so make your choices and live with them. Ask around and do some Googling about (for example) who Unsworth is, and why they’re making a sensational pinot.

“Go to shows like mine and do some due diligence, and ask which wines are making headlines,” suggested Mulligan.

“Also, make a short list and try and take your time; if you just blaze through the festival, you won’t remember anything. Eat before you go, too.”

But for Mulligan, festivals offer more than vino.

“I’ll also be looking forward to checking out

the culinary side of Cowichan. I know great food when I taste it, and great food that pairs with wine.”

That fare will be served by local eateries including the Stone Soup Inn, Thistles Cafe, the Teafarm, La Pommerie, Satellite Bar & Grille, Pioneer House, and Vinoteca during a chalice of chef’s dinners, many backed by live music and art exhibits.

A highlight meal will be the 150-seat Cowichan Long Table Dinner by the Island Chefs’ Collaborative at Dragonfly Farms on Sept. 8, marking the IFF’s debut pairing with the Cowichan Wineries Co-operative.

That’s where products by Blue Grouse, Averill Creek, Vignetti Zanatta, Rocky Creek, Silverside, and Damali wineries, plus Merridale Ciderworks, can be tried during the farm-to-table event.

Meanwhile, Rocky Creek’s panel will tap key questions.

“We’ll ask ‘What grape will lead the island in the future?’” year-round rosé fan Mulligan explained.

“The region that’s successful will have something that gets people’s attention.

“In Oregon, it’s pinot noir. Right now, everyone’s just guessing. I think it might be pinot noir, or a blend, because you can make a lot of everything.”

Also on deck: What do island wineries want to be known for? What kind of destination are they?

Mulligan’s experienced a barrel of wineries and festivals.

“One of my favourites is Cornucopia in Whistler in November, because it’s smaller venues and contained — you can walk from event to event.

“The other one is The Playhouse, Vancouver’s wine festival.”

Mulligan urged Cowichan’s 16 or so wineries to bottle locally but think provincially — even globally.

“Lots of wineries sell out locally, but some equate that to having great wines, but if they bring that wine to Victoria, Vancouver, or Calgary there may be a hard reality coming their way.

“You can’t just be heroes in your own ball park, you have to expand outside your region.”

But Mulligan was miffed at Prohibition-type barriers to bringing wines across provincial boundaries.

“It gets hairy with Tourism B.C. saying ‘Come to wine country’, and the Alberta government saying ‘You can’t just bring wine in from B.C.’ “It’s a lousy cash grab (by government). But finally, wineries are realizing they’ve cowed since 1928 — no one has ever been charged.

“It’s all phoney (threats), and the wineries are standing up and shipping. Their (bureaucrats’) bluff has been called.”

NEDHEDZ set to again share great live music for a better cause at the Lake Malcolm Chalmers

ED is back.

An annual celebration of friends, family and great live music returns to Mesachie Lake Sept. 7 with the added goal of “kicking cancer’s ass.”

Two local bands CLEARCUT and The New Leaves will be playing at the 4th-annual NEDFEST at the homestead located at 9446 South Shore Road in Mesachie Lake Saturday, Sept 7.

The first of 10 bands start playing at 2:45 p.m. The music will continue until it ends.

As well as CLEARCUT from Lake Malcolm Chalmers/file Cowichan, Victoria bands 99 Buck and A young Weak Patrol fan enjoys the show during the 2012 NEDFEST concert. The Colts are back again this year.

New to the line up at NEDFEST this Weak Patrol will be playing again as NEDFEST returns Sept. 7 in Mesachie Lake.

This all-ages event has attracted people from all over Cowichan to help battle cancer. With a live auction, silent auction, 50/50 draw and home-baked goods for sale, NEDFEST hopes to double last years $3,000 donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We are happy with last years’ donation but we really think we can do better this

year,” event organizer Chrissy Belcourt said.

What is NEDFEST and who is Ned? “It’s primarily a celebration of life, for us the living — a chance to get a lot of great people together and kick up a little dust, laugh, love and dance,” states CLEARCUT’s Doug Eddy.

“NED is often heard but rarely seen.

He loves his family and his beloved NEDHEDZ because there is a little ‘NED’ in all of them.”

The tickets are $40 for ages 19 and up, $20 for ages 16 to18, and those under 16 are free. Get them at Just Jake’s in Duncan, The Print Spot in Lake Cowichan, Friesen’s Meats in Honeymoon Bay, Irly Bird in Lake Cowichan or on the day of the concert at the gate, if there’s any left.

DEATHS STRANG, Steve Alexander March 30, 1939 – August 26, 2013

Steve battled with cancer for the last 17 months.

Finally succumbing to the disease August 26, 2013 at Chemainus Health Care Center, where he was lovingly cared for by the exceptional nurses and care aids. He leaves behind the love of his life Rose who he was married to for the past 49 years. His two daughters Tina Strang and Laura Hoek (John), his two grandchildren Lanie and Blake, his sister Chris Hale (Rick Hesketh), many sister-in-laws, brother-inlaws, nieces and nephews.

Steve was born in Kokola, Finland. He came to Canada by boat when he was 12. He landed in Halifax, travelled by train to Vancouver. He lived in Port Alberni, Loon Lake then moved back to Vancouver. In 1956 he came to Crofton to work at the new mill site as a cement buggy driver, where he helped pour the first foundation of the new mill. Dad had a busy life as a commercial fisherman on his own boat (Bamsi), worked in the logging industry, ran a fish hatchery and was a great carpenter. Steve could do just about anything. He loved hunting, fishing especially Chilcotin Area. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin at Scum Lake. A daily get together with his friends at their favorite watering hole The Brass Bell. Where he told great stories and jokes to all who would listen.

HEIDELBACH, Kaitlin Brooke January 28, 1997 – August 29, 2013 A bright and shining life cut short much too soon.

Kaitlin was born in Prince George, BC and moved to Ladysmith with her family where she is the fifth generation to live in Ladysmith.

She leaves behind her brokenhearted mother and father, Tanya and Neil Heidelbach, sister Dezaray Heidelbach and brother Colton Graham; grandparents Debbie Okimaw (predeceased grandfather Cliff Okimaw 2009) and Perry and Shirley Heidelbach; aunts, uncles, cousins and many close and special friends and Dezaray’s special friend Chantal Lofstrom and family.

Kaitlin excelled at everything whether it was games, sports or school - she wanted to be the best at everything she did. She attended Queen Margaret’s School where she was starting the new school year in grade eleven as House Captain and Sports Captain. Highly motivated, energetic, driven, a natural leader and independent she was destined to succeed – she had big hopes and dreams and always said she was going to be rich, own her own castle on an island and live there!

Ever since Kaitlin was five years old, she said she wanted to be a doctor and never once wavered from this goal. Her plans were that after she completed medical school she wanted to spend the first two years of her career working with Doctors Without Borders. Kaitlin loved to volunteer and did so at Cowichan General Hospital and St. John Ambulance in Duncan. She also went on a service trip when she was 14 to Nicaragua and was looking forward to another service trip to Africa this coming school year.

Kaitlin had a job from the time she was twelve working in the horse stables until she recently started a new job at Walmart in Duncan. Besides hardworking, Kaitlin was fun-loving – she loved animals and loved riding her horse Rocky, she loved hiking and camping, reading, and anything to do with school or education.

“You are the love of our lives, greatly loved and will be forever missed” The family would like to thank the Ladysmith RCMP and the various Search and Rescue agencies who worked tirelessly all night and never gave up. Special thanks to Carla with Ladysmith Victim Services who was a rock in a great time of grief. Thank you to QMS for being the school Kaitlin loved and provided her with opportunities to thrive and succeed, and for hosting the Celebration of Life and tea. Thank you to our very close friends & family who stood by our side through everything.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Queen Margaret’s School in Duncan on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with a tea to follow. Please come out to share your stories about Kaitlin.

SCOTT, Gillian Irene November 27, 1953 - August 27, 2013

Gillian Irene Scott passed away peacefully at home in Duncan with members of her family and friends by her side.

Gillian is survived by her parents Joe (The Gov) and Chris Dowler, husband Allan, her pride and joy, son Alex (Erika), sisters Ros and Pat (Barry), numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved dog Barney (Gracie, Mr. Wilson and Mojito).

Gillian was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England.

After graduating from high school, Gillian trained as a dog groomer. She had an immense talent, pride, and passion for her trade. She also worked at a 17th Century English pub called the “Three Horseshoes”.

To quote Gillian’s sister Pat, pub patrons loved her to bits because she was so much fun. Gillian loved the thrill of exploring ship wrecks with a scuba diving club.

In 1985, Gillian immigrated to Canada and started a dog grooming business. She married, had a son, and enjoyed 15 years volunteering her time with 10th Tsartlip and Lake Cowichan Beavers. She became a popular barista in Lake Cowichan and eventually the “Coffee Mill” in Honeymoon Bay. In Youbou, she operated a tourist accommodation business with Allan and then fell ill with cancer.

Gillian was truly a wonderful person who touched all that met her and she will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Graham Blackburn, the Somenos Clinic staff, and all the dedicated Cowichan Valley health care workers, which includes ministers Deborah Revit and Chris Stoker, and her wonderful friends and neighbours who rallied around our beautiful Gillian.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. on September 7, 2013, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 5800 Church Rd.

A request for proposals to develop a Cowichan Communities Profile on the Determinants of Health.

The Cowichan Communities Health Network seeks to engage a contractor or contractors to develop a community profile on the determinants of health for the Cowichan Communities.

The purpose of this profile of each of the determinants of health is to provide a tool for use by citizens, agencies and communities to facilitate improvements in health and wellbeing in the Cowichan region.

The profile will: a. Clearly illustrate the current status, (baseline), of Cowichan Communities both regionally and sub-regionally and where possible by individual communities through narration, mapping, community engagement, charts and graphs. b. Provide comparisons to Vancouver Island and Provincial norms. c. Identify successes, challenges and potential responses. d. Work with the CCHN to identify community resources with the potential to respond. e. Provide an executive summary It is the intention of the CCHN to have the Community Profile completed in phases. The first phase will be a completion of a profile of the Economic Status of the Cowichan Communities.

The Contractor will engage with the CCHN Asset Mapping Committee and Chairs as needed during the development of the profile.

The first phase draft profile will be widely circulated for feedback prior to contracting for subsequent phases.

he first game of the Vancouver Mainland Football League’s Midget division regular season was a defensive grudge match, with neither side budging much.

The Cowichan Bulldogs hosted Victoria Spartans on a sunny Sunday at McAdam Park and got a last-minute chip shot field goal by Brock Gowanlock for a 10-7 victory.

The Bulldogs held a precarious 7-0 lead for much of the game before Victoria tied it with a fourth-quarter TD and conversion.

Cowichan returned the ensuing kickoff back into great field position and proceeded to engineer a solid timeconsuming drive during the last three minutes that stalled just short of the goal line, but set the stage for Gowanlock’s winning kick.

“A win’s a win,’’ Bulldogs’ head coach Doug (Opie) Williams told the guys after the game. “Saying that, we have to get a lot better.’’

“I’m very impressed how you sucked it up and finished this game,’’ added assistant Ross McCauley, who provided direction for quarterback Erik Kenner to engineer a well-rounded game.

The teams showed some jitters in the early stages and had trouble executing at various other times which is fairly

typical of season-openers.

The Bulldogs were whistled twice for time count violations and the Spartans once.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs put the ball in the end zone when Kenner found Darren Aitchison with a quick toss over the middle for a touchdown. The convert was missed.

Kole Lochbaum added a single on a punt late in the third quarter and that was all the scoring until Victoria finally tallied a TD on a run up the middle.

But the Bulldogs weren’t to be denied and slipped right back to regain the lead when it counted most.

Niko Ceska and Garion Ferguson had big interceptions in the game, one early and one late.

The best part of the Bulldogs’ offense was the running of Kenner, Drayson Price and Liam Palcu-Johnston but the passing attack also showed signs it will be effective with some fine-tuning.

The Bulldogs were obviously happy with the outcome, but know they dodged a bullet and have to be a whole lot better when they host defending champion Coquitlam at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at McAdam Park.

“Our fitness could use some work,’’ said Aitchison. “Otherwise, our team, we pulled together and came through.’’

Aitchison likes the way Kenner has stepped into the starting role directing the offense.

“Erik’s a fantastic quarterback,’’ he said. “He can see everything. There’s no worry there.’’

“We had first-game jitters,’’ said Williams. “A lot of the core players were missing. We had a lot of guys playing both ways.’’

Kain Melchior, Cory Lewis, Jacob Regnier, Eddy Walt and Riley Caljouw all didn’t play which would have made a huge difference to the Bulldogs’ plan of attack.

“Defensively, in my opinion, they played really well,’’ said Williams. “Offensively, we’re just not quite there yet. Once we gel and get everyone on the same page, we’ll be laughing.’’

“We’ve obviously got stuff to touch up — Week One,’’ said Price, who has reverted to running back on offense again from defence last season.

“I’m a little used to it,’’ he said. “Whatever the team needs to win. We’re short guys in positions.’’

pirited competition from here, there and everywhere: Cowichan United is going into the Division 2 Island Men’s Soccer League season with much the same lineup.

The only exceptions are George Thomas moving back up to Div. 1 and Steven Zorich, who has gone to Spain.

“This year the team has taken on a very young look,’’ reports Neall Rowlings.

The core group is still there, but the youth movement comes from 17-yearold Kyle Kononowicz, Brooke Lisson and Justin Horne.

The first regular-season home game is against recently-promoted Comox.

“Our expectations are to defend the Division 2 top spot, however, that seems like a long ways away from here,’’ conceded Rowlings.

• Former Cowichan Bulldogs’ football star Ryan MacDonald was named the B.C. Football Conference’s special teams Player of the Week for his performance with the Langley Rams in a 58-20 victory over the Westshore Rebels at Langford’s West Hills Stadium.

MacDonald returned a kick 98 yards for a touchdown and the Rebels opted

not to kick the ball his way again.

MacDonald also chalked up 52 yards on three punt returns and chipped in to the offense with 18 yards rushing on three carries.

• Melissa Cottam is helping to kickstart the fundraising for the Cody Classic ball tournament Sept. 13 to 15.

For every large or medium two-forone pizza pick-up at Moo’s Pizza, Cottam is donating $2 to the cause.

“We don’t ask the customer for anything other than to pick up their pizza,’’ said Cottam.

This has been going on since July and $1,100 has already been raised toward a target of $2,000.

Duncan Fitness is also donating $2 from every group and training session while Full House Painting has given $400 and Lucky Paws pet supply another $50.

• Rugby Canada enlists a bunch of valley people for its national men’s team.

Besides player Matt Evans, coach Kieran Crowley and photographer Caity McCulloch mentioned in the News Leader Pictorial after a win over the United States in Toronto, the valley also had representation from Isabel Grondin as lead therapist and Garant John from Shawnigan Lake who serves as an assistant coach to Crowley.

Taylor Martin Making Team B.C. for the Midget Lacrosse Nationals was the highlight of a very productive lacrosse season for Taylor Martin, 16. It was a long process to reach that point, beginning with an island camp and leading to the final selections in Vancouver for the nationals in Whitby, Ont. “The coaches and the evaluators narrowed it down to 30 kids,’’ explained Martin. “From that 30, we played a full game and they picked 18 runners and two goalies to represent Team B.C.’’ He helped B.C. to third place there. “It was a huge lacrosse tournament,’’ he said of the event that encompassed other age divisions as well. During the regular season with the Cowichan Valley Midget A1 Thunder, Martin was a standout and scored many key goals en route to the team’s island championship and bronze medal performance at the provincials. “I felt the pressure a few times and the coaches made sure that I knew it and I tried my best to help the team out,’’ he said. There’s many potential benefits to all his experiences. “Hopefully, it’ll help out with other teams in the future to give me an extra chance or something,’’ Martin said.

owichan Golf and Country Club ladies’ division members continued to enjoy great weather during the end of July and carrying into August for their weekly gatherings.

The winners of their respective handicap divisions in a medal, pin round July 31 were: Christa Robson, Pat Molyneaux, Pat Davis and Many

McKelvie.

Six players carded birdies: Lynda Morrison (No. 4); Ellen Lyon (No. 7); Jeanne Wilkinson and Peggy Robertson (No. 8); Melinda Spoor (No. 13); and Camilla Carson (No. 15).

Marianne Hunt was closest to the pin on No. 6, Wilkinson on No. 8, Spoor on No. 13 and Sandy Buchanan on No. 15.

Morrison made a chip-in on No. 4 while Val Anderson and Carson did the same on No. 9 and 15, respectively.

Results of a par round Aug. 7 featured handicap division wins by Maartje Reimer, Buchanan, Anderson, McKelvie and Sandra Hemming.

Robson and Carson Merrick birdied No. 4.

Ellen Lyon had one on No. 8 and Merrick posted an additional birdie along with McKelvie.

K.P. winners included: Merrick (No. 6), Lyon (No. 8), McKelvie (No. 13) and Spoor (No. 15).

Jeanne Wilkinson made an eagle on No. 4.

Joan Wakelin wasn’t impressed by that and

drained the ultimate shot with a hole-in-one.

A Tombstone novelty round was played Aug. 14. Lyon, Mary Dougan, Joyce Willis and Davis captured top spot in their respective handicap divisions.

Birdies were made by Arlene Lepp on No. 5, Dougan on No. 6, Mary Braithwaite on No. 7 and Carol Willan on No. 13.

Spoor had K.P.s on both No. 8 and 15. Andrea Morris was the K.P. winner on No. 6, the same hole where Dougan recorded a chip-in.

t’s a busy time for the Cowichan Valley Capitals as they undergo final preparations for the opening of the B.C. Hockey League’s regular season this weekend in Chilliwack.

The Caps played their final two exhibition games on the weekend, tying the Grizzlies 3-3 in Victoria Friday night and losing the rematch 4-3 in their first appearance at Cowichan Arena Saturday.

It was the third tie along with one win and two losses for the Caps in exhibition play.

The Caps’ opening games at the second-annual Showcase tournament in Chilliwack are Saturday night against Prince George and Sunday afternoon against Trail.

“Showcase is always a good start,’’ said Caps’ assistant coach Rob DeClark. “It’s sort of a big deal for the boys. That’s sort of what everybody’s preparing for this week.’’

The stands will be filled with scouts, as each of the league’s 16 teams play two games apiece during the weekend. It gives the university scouts an early line on who to watch during the season and it’s one-stop shopping, in a sense, with everyone at the Prospera Centre’s two arenas.

DeClark and head coach Bob Beatty have been hard at work all this

week during practices at Cowichan Arena to ensure players start to get on the same page with systems and team concepts.

After the Caps complete their games at the Showcase, they’ll open the regular part of the schedule Saturday, Sept. 14 at Cowichan Arena against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and then play a return game in Alberni Sept. 18.

DeClark said the players always look forward to heating up a division rivalry again right off the bat.

The Caps have a very busy September with nine games on the calendar, including an early three-game swing through the Interior on the last weekend of the month.

The Caps are currently down to their allotted 22-man roster, with two players currently on the 30-day injured reserve list until Sept. 27.

Returning defenceman Jarrett Brown is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery and just finishing rehabilitation before beginning contact drills again and Adam Moody, a 20-year-old recruit from Newmarket, Ont., suffered a broken jaw during an exhibition game.

DeClark said it’s nice to get down to business after a busy camp that featured some 65 players.

“Everybody got a good look,’’ he said. We had six exhibition games.

That process is through. We’ve got 22.’’

The Caps will pin their goaltending hopes on 20-year-old Quebec Major Junior Hockey League veteran Robin Gusse, who calls himself “just a boy working too hard, loving too deeply and who don’t know Jack,’’ on his Twitter account.

Back-up Francis Marotte comes to the Caps from Longueuil, Quebec and took his game to a higher level last season as a member of the Rice Memorial prep school hockey program in Vermont.

Young valley golfers take a shot at the top spots in B.c. Bantam event Two valley golfers finished among the top seven in the B.C. bantam boys’ championships at Qualicum Beach.

Tristan Mandur of Mill Bay, fresh off his men’s and junior low gross titles at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, came third overall in the top-notch field.

Mandur had rounds of 69 and 72 for a

141 total. That was just four shots back of winner Roy Kang of North Vancouver and two behind runner-up A.J. Ewart of Coquitlam.

Mandur was just one-over-par for the two rounds.

Mandur had a great B.C. golf championship season that also included a tie for

sixth place during the preceding juvenile boys’ tournament at Crown Isle.

Callum Davison, pictured, of Duncan placed seventh at 146, six over par.

Davison shot 71 the first round and 75 during the second round.

He was the defending champion but is still only 13 years old.

Mother Maier a Mudder unlike any other

he’s a Mother of a Mudder.

Patrizia Maier’s life has taken a 360-degree turn in recent years and now she wants to be the world’s toughest mudder. She’s well on track already to doing just that.

“I just heard some people talk about it and I looked it up,’’ said Maier, 31, of her introduction to Tough Mudder competitions. “It’s something to me I thought would be interesting.’’

Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10- to 12-mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces that test all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.

It’s considered the premier adventure challenge series in the world and Maier is hooked after getting into it a couple of years ago.

“At first, I thought it was kind of amazing people wanted to put themselves through that,’’ she said.

Each of the events is unique but there are certain elements in common.

“There’s always mud, there’s ice cubes and ice you jump into, there’s barb wire, there’s electric shock — it’s 10,000 volts of electricity,’’ she said.

“There’s always lots of mud.

And there’s always a surprise.’’

Born in Germany, Maier moved to Canada when she was 11, landing in Ottawa first and then Manitoba for seven years before coming to the island. With her stepfather in the Canadian Forces, that wayward style of life was common for many families.

Maier never really struggled with her weight until after her two pregnancies.

“I was always skinny before,’’ she said. “It’s hard to lose.’’

She gained 100 and 80 pounds each time, leading up to the birth of her two boys — now aged eight and six.

“I led an unhealthy lifestyle and couldn’t even walk up a flight of stairs without being winded,’’ she said.

After leaving her relationship and becoming a single mom, Maier decided to get her life back on track in many ways. She returned to school to acquire a nursing diploma and now works at Acacia Ty

Mawr nursing care home in Shawnigan Lake, but that was only a small part of the turnaround.

“During my return to school, I joined a local gym to begin to find something for myself and to try and become healthier,’’ she noted. “I had quit smoking and began working on fitness.’’

Maier has been a fixture at Valley Health and Fitness ever since. She’s even starting a course soon to become a personal trainer.

“It’s my passion,’’ she said of her fitness craze. “I just love it.’’

Combined with her nursing background and a previous career as a cook, Maier possesses the complete package of knowledge for a healthy lifestyle.

Initially, she couldn’t even do five minutes of cardio but easily pushed it to 50 minutes after a year. Maier then added spin classes and joined a

running clinic to complete the Times Colonist 10 K run.

“I completed the run in 53 minutes,’’ she recalled. “I began to realize I could and would accomplish whatever I set out to do with discipline, mental tenacity and consistent training.’’

Shortly after that, Maier heard about Tough Mudder.

“I began training harder with the goal of doing an event one year away,’’ she pointed out. “However, my goal changed and I decided to complete my first one in just three months.’’

Maier trained hard while juggling home life, work and finances and entered Tough Mudder Seattle in September of 2012. She completed it in two hours and 20 minutes.

“The course was 12 miles and 20 obstacles,’’ Maier said.

She stepped it up a notch and decided to run four events in seven days — two in Oregon on back-to-back days

When you’re a Tough Mudder, you can do anything. Patrizia Maier fits the image of a tough Mother Mudder. An event in Whistler was her fourth over two successive weekends. and two in Whistler after a few days’ rest.

“It was an amazing experience,’’ Maier said. “I loved it.

I was really sore.’’

The next event is in Seattle in October and then Maier hopes a fundraising effort will be successful in sending her to New Jersey in November for the World Toughest Mudder Race.

The trip will be expensive and Maier needs sponsor support to attend. She’s looking for donations and also pledges to utilize company logos in any way possible for whatever business support she receives.

classes (per week) and I’m doing an hour of weight training before that.

“I love it. I’m so happy when I do it. It’s my passion. I have so much fun.’’

Maier’s kids have yet to see her compete in person, but she hopes that will happen soon. “They’ve watched the videos and stuff,’’ she said.

“They think it’s pretty cool.’’
