Coquitlam was the scene of a gang-related killing Tuesday night when a 34-year-old man was gunned down while in an SUV. Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed that Joey Lamont Arrance was the victim of Tuesday night’s shooting but, as of Thursday, didn’t know whether he was a Coquitlam resident. IHIT also won’t comment on what gangs Arrance belonged to but has confirmed he has a criminal record.

Some of the debris left behind after a man fleeing a shooter knocked a bus stop sign as he careened towards his landing spot on Casey Street and Brunette Avenue in Coquitlam Tuesday night. According to news reports, a man named Joey Arrance was the subject of a civil forfeiture claim for about $200,000 in jewelry and cash believed to be proceeds of crime. According police reports dating back to 2011
in The Tri-City News’ sister paper The Prince George Free Press, Arrance was a high-ranking member of the Game Tight Soldiers who was arrested and jailed on weapons charges. On Tuesday, the man’s
past may have caught up with him. Police say Arrance was parked on Marathon Court when shots were fired into the vehicle. Arrance drove on to Brunette Avenue and knocked over a bus stop before his vehicle came to rest on a curb at Casey Street. It made a loud bang, reported a neighbour who lives near the corner where the car eventually stopped. “The crash, that’s about it. It happened at about 10:30,” said the resident, who didn’t want her
name used. Someone then ran up to the vehicle saying, “’Hey bro, bro, are you OK? Are you OK?’” the woman reported, saying she was about to call 911 when she heard sirens approaching. Efforts by a witness to revive the victim before B.C. Ambulance arrived failed, IHIT’s Sgt. Pound said during a press conference, and Arrance was confirmed dead upon arrival at Royal Columbian Hospital. see COPS SEARCH, page 6
CUPE deal likely (and likely to be costly for SD43) By Diane Strandberg THE TRI-CITY NEWS
The president of the union local representing School District 43 support staff predicts a settlement as early as next week, averting a full-scale walkout. But a new deal could put a dent in School District 43’s already tight budget. D ave G i n t e r o f CUPE Local 561 said the province is likely to offer CUPE workers the same 2% it has given other public sector workers and was the reason negotiators called union leaders to the table next week. “It looks like they’re close to a wage settlement but it does look
More backto-school stories, page 3 like they’ll put that payment on the school board,” Ginter said. He said the district will likely have to shell out an extra $1.5 million to $2 million for what is likely be a two-year agreement. That would be a difficult for SD43 to handle after the board of education cut $12.1 million — and 142 jobs, the bulk of them teachers, special education assistants and support workers — to balance this year’s budget. see DISTRICT, page 3
